First teaser and posters for Hyun Bin’s thriller sageuk The King’s Wrath
by girlfriday
Finally, here’s our first peek at Hyun Bin’s army comeback project, the fusion sageuk thriller The King’s Wrath. Has it been forever and a day since Hyun Bin returned from military service, or is time doing wonky things? The movie is planning for a spring premiere, and has released its first teaser along with character posters for its star-studded cast. If the fusion sageuk box office trend of the last few years continues, it should be a spring blockbuster.
The feature film debut of director Lee Jae-kyu (The King 2 Hearts, Beethoven Virus) stars Hyun Bin as a young King Jeonjo who was twenty-four when he became king. As the teaser and posters tell us, the story takes place in the first year of Jeongjo’s reign, when an entire country opposed the ascension of a traitor’s son and the conspiracies against his life would not cease (he’s the son of Crown Prince Sado, who was executed as a traitor). The film is about the assassination attempts by the various factions and the king’s struggle to survive.
Jung Jae-young (Plan Man) stars as Jeongjo’s sole trusted bodyguard, described as the king’s shadow. Jo Jung-seok (You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin) breaks from type to play the fiercest assassin in all of Joseon, raised for one purpose: to kill. What a turnaround from all the talkative nebbishy guys he always plays. I can’t wait to see them duke it out.
Han Ji-min (Plan Man) plays Queen Jeongsun, queen consort to King Yeongjo and the king’s very powerful step-grandmother, described as the most ambitious person inside the palace. Co-starring are Jo Jae-hyun as a man who deals in the assassin trade, Park Sung-woong as a general, and Kim Sung-ryung as the queen mother. I really like the movie’s one-liner description: “Jeongjo Year 1. A story about the events surrounding the king’s assassination, and the crisscrossed fates of those who must live, those who must die, and those who must be saved.”
The King’s Wrath will be in theaters this May.

Rumor has it the plot concerns the king being driven to madness by the phrase "Error Establishing Connection to Database." And no one from the Joseon era can tell him what it means.

King Jeongyo? Wouldn't that be the king in Sungkyunkwan Scandal? I remember they were looking for Crown Prince Sado's hidden will? My memory fails me since it's been so many years since I saw that... But I could've sworn they're connected somehow.
In any case, really excited to this! I honestly expected Hyun bin to come back in a drama but when this got announced - I was excited to see how he'd look in a sageuk. Can't say I'm disappointed in the least lol.

Yeah, that's the same one.
He was also played by Lee Seo-jin in Yi San.

Yep, you're mostly right, except for the hidden will being King Yeongjo's. Yeongjo was Sado's father who executed him (by locking him in a rice chest or something, according to legend). Then Yeongjo made a will in which he declared Sado innocent and expressed regret over his execution, and hid it. So Jeongjo, who always believed in his father's innocence, was looking for it so that he could officially clear Sado's name posthumously. So there is a link there, but I think Sungkyunkwan Scandal is probably supposed to take place later in Jeongjo's reign, since he's secure enough in his throne that he's trying to carry out reforms, which doesn't usually happen in the first year of any king's reign, hehe.
Oh man, writing this brought back such memories of Scandal. Now I feel like watching it for the third time, but it's 2.30am, sigh.
Also, Binnie! Ohaithar it's been a whileeee~

Crown Prince Sado dying locked up in a rice chest with nothing to eat or drink in hot summer weather, that's not legend, but history.

I read Lady Hyegyeong's Memoirs, and oof, it's a tragedy of Shakespearean scope. If there were a Joseon Shakespeare, students would be reading about it along with Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear.
Lady Hyegyeong is Jeongjo's mother who lost nearly everyone close to her because of her husband's death.
Seriously messed up history. No wonder Korean pop culture revisits Jeongjo's reign repeatedly. Hard to reconcile truly.

I'm a third of the way through The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyeong. This period of the Joseon dynasty is really interesting.

American history is so wimpy compared to Asian or European history. England has Henry VII, Italy has the Borgias, Russia has Ivan the Terriblie, Japan, Korea, and China have eny number of unspeakable characters. We've got Andrew Jackson and the giant White House cheese, Mary LIncoln going on shopping sprees, and Warren G. Harding getting illegal hooch delivered to the back door of the White House during Prohibition.
Korea has the Joseon Dynasty, we've got the Duck Dynasty.

Han Ji Min plays the step grandmother of King Jeongjo because King Youngjo was the father of Crown Prince Sado who, in turn, was the father of King Jeongjo, and Han Ji Min plays Queen Jeongsun who was King Youngjo's second queen after his first one died. I think the age gap was humongous in that she was in her early teens when he must have been in his 60s.

Step-grandmother to Jeongjo. Must've been a shock to have a teenager as your grandmother though.
And no, Queen Jeongsun was Yeongjo's third Queen Consort, and yes the age gap was humongous. Same devious two-faced step-grandmother character in "Yi San".

Ok, no one has stated the obvious yet so I will: Hyun Bin looks so hot with the beard and moustache.... not really a surprise but, nevertheless, it MUST be said.
There.
Also, from the trailer that followed, "Behind the Camera" looks good.

For me, Hiun Bin is a bad actor, very sexy indeed , but in my name is Kim Sam Soon, or in the last Autumn he was devoured by his costars.
He is being lucky, but one day his sexiness wont be enough to support a role...

I don't get the hype over him. He is good looking but doesn't have the same effect on me when he acts like Won Bin does.
I think this is a good move for him. Some actors do better in movies because of it's length and other factors.

Sorry, got to disagree. He made me tear up a few times then had me bawling my eyes out in a few of his dramas. I didn't even realize I had watched 3 of his dramas till I finally looked up who had made me cry so hard for the first time in 10 years. I really didn't think he was that good looking in Kim Sam Soon either though. But that's just my opinion. I also agree that the other actors mention are hot and good too. :)

True, PlumWine. He's not that bad of an actor. I thought he was exceptionally good in 'Secret Garden' - especially when it came to the body-switching aspects of the show. But to each their own, I guess.

Hyun Bin looks so good in sageuk costume (he was hillarious in Secret Garden so for some reason I thought those would not suit him but I was so wrong!)
And Han Ji Min and Hyun Bin as enemies in the court?? Count me in! Han Ji Min is a great actor and I have high hopes for their chemistry (since both seem to generate it with whomever they star with).
Jo Jung Seok is someone I liked in King2Hearts but now I realise that it is the character, not really the actor. I wonder if he has some sort of a family connection in the industry since he just doesn't seem talented enough to warrant all these roles (shall I duck? I know the majority loves him).

I know Hyun Bin as that guy from Secret Garden. I breezed thru the pictures looking for that fresh young face, scratched my head, and then went back and stared at that scruffy beard to try and decide if he was hiding under there.
Now I have face blindness, somewhat, so that is what I blame for it, but I totally can't see Hyun Bin. I'll take it on faith that he is under that hair somewhere.
