Running Man: Episode 174
by gummimochi
It’s a numbers game for our cast as they use their noggins to decipher the clues that lead to The Number. Kwang-soo learns that leadership is more than just a title; it has to be earned. But with so many numbers flying about in one day, it’s hard enough keeping one number straight, let alone a seemingly infinite number of possibilities.
EPISODE 174. Broadcast on December 1, 2013.
We dive right in as Spartakooks ventures a guess at a five-digit combination… and disappears right through the floor. Whoa. This numbers game looks like it’ll be a doozy with the string of clues linked to one number stamped on their hands: 14357.
Thankfully we waste no time to introduce today’s guests: Heodang 007—er, Lee Seung-gi gets accosted by the hyungs, who all want to touch his muscles. Can’t say I blame you. And hee, Ji-hyo pinches Gary in comparison and calls him soft. Gary: “So’s my heart.”
I love how no one believes for a second that the variety prince is nervous to be here, and he admits that he STILL doesn’t know how this show works. No worries, neither do we sometimes, and it’s only now that I recall that his last appearance ended with a bang.
Another guest runs in with a wide smile: SISTAR’s Bora, who calls out cheerily: “Hey, it’s Kwang-ja!” Puhaha, then Kwang-soo says his alter-ego is more popular than he is.
Seung-gi nips the cast’s musings that the two singers must be dating in the bud, explaining that she’s helping him out for his year-end concert. Which is when Jong-kook quips, “You’re going to dress up as a woman, aren’t you?” Seung-gi: “I gave that up, hyung!” HA.
It’s true that Jong-kook’s dance with SISTAR was all kinds of awesome, to which Seung-gi asks if he usually likes that sort of thing himself, and Jae-suk adds that Jong-kook has come a long way since the X Man days.
Last but not least, actress Han Hye-jin (Warm Words) rounds out today’s pack and the cast congratulate her on her recentish marriage to national soccer player Ki Sung-yong.
Instead of a traditional introduction, our cast is led away to a pool where a pair of flying chairs await them. Needless to say, they aren’t amused. Haha: “I got my makeup done!”
It’s a survival rock-paper-scissors tournament where last person standing wins. Up first is Seung-gi versus Jong-kook, and when they both throw out the same gesture, Haha asks if both of them can go flying. Ha.
But it’s Jong-kook who loses, and then gets dragged away without explanation. Something fishy is definitely going on here…
Pfft, Kwang-soo slips and falls into the water despite Seung-gi’s helping hand. Jae-suk warns him about the giraffe’s unfair tactics, which Kwang-soo displays right away. He glosses right over his loss, and though Seung-gi insists that he technically won, Mr. PD sweats before saying it doesn’t count.
At least Kwang-soo admits that he doesn’t fight fair, and they agree to play mook-ji-ppa instead. This time Seung-gi loses and he goes flying.
When it’s Hye-jin’s turn, the cast remarks on how demure she seems now that she’s married, and she softly answer that she does have a family now. Then with Kwang-soo’s loss comes the return of Toad Kwang-soo.
Meanwhile, the eliminated get stamped with the five-digit number we saw earlier (14357) and simply told to remember it well today since it’ll come in handy. Gah, this is going to involve math, isn’t it?
They’re then instructed to choose one of five marked doors, and it looks to me that this is how we’re going to divide teams today. Meanwhile, Suk-jin sends off four more cast members until it’s down to either him or Haha for the win.
They don’t even look at their gestures, which is even more nerve-wracking in my opinion, and then Haha finally breaks the mat-hyung’s winning streak and drinks in his victory. Happy to be dry, he gives a big hug to his coordi.
Kwang-soo takes a long, dramatic moment before choosing the green door where Seung-gi already is. They’re both perplexed about today’s game and their tools, and Seung-gi says he tries not to think too hard to figure it out anymore. Ha, that’s probably smart.
Bora joins Jong-kook behind the purple (bora) door, to which Jong-kook says in awe that he must have some kind of fate with SISTAR. I love how the team’s allowance of 20,000 Won ( about 20 bucks) gets two very different responses: Seung-gi: “Isn’t that a lot?” Hye-jin: “Didn’t they give us too little?”
Ha, the Monday Couple are paired up together, and with the two to a team rule, Haha is forced to choose the last door, where Suk-jin is.
Now Jo PD finally explains today The Number Race where the teams will play games to acquire keywords to get to the final mission location. The Monday Couple and Suk-jin and Haha pair are given hints that point to a bus stop.
Haha and Suk-jin try to slip away unnoticed in a taxi, but the Purple Team is right on their heels. Meanwhile the hint-less teams collectively rack their brains, and Seung-gi notes that his appearances tends to correspond with the more difficult show concepts. I’ll say.
The foursome (Kwang-soo, Seung-gi, Jae-suk, and Hye-jin) inquire at an information’s desk, pointing them in the right direction. Kwang-soo and Seung-gi run off ahead and decide to run to the bus stop.
Kwang-soo points out that Seung-gi has a way with the ladies after his trip with the Noonas, to which Seung-gi replies that he was only met with criticism there. Hehe, after watching the premiere for that show, I can agree with that.
Seung-gi’s tendency to frequently ask for directions appears here too, to the point Kwang-soo asks if his leadership is being questioned. At the same time, Gary connects the dots that their number is a bus stop number, and later gets a call that it’s a community center.
Which is where Haha and Suk-jin are headed now and they create an alliance with Jong-kook and Bora. Equipped with their next clue (“Add 11”), they decide to travel together and find the corresponding bus stop number… which doesn’t exist. And their other possibility directs them across town. Yipes.
The Monday Couple is in bright spirits despite ending up in the completely wrong area. They stop for some fruit (and the local ajusshis tell them to get married already, ha) and run into Jae-suk and Hye-jin. They follow via taxi.
Meanwhile, Kwang-soo and Seung-gi get off somewhere nearby, but they’re still lost so Seung-gi yet again asks for help. A nice passerby helps them out and Kwang-soo asks why he’s only paying attention to Seung-gi. Because he’s actually looking into where you need to go?
They head off, which is when Seung-gi notes that the red-bean snack they gave the guy in thanks had a lot of filling in it, and Kwang-soo actually runs back to ask for half. Ack, I’m cringing in secondhand embarrassment.
They’re joined by the Monday Couple and Kwang-soo shares a clementine with Seung-gi… with his mouth? Ha, okay then.
The three teams finally acquire their first hint, and after Seung-gi stops to ask for more help, he follows Jae-suk and Hye-jin on to the bus. Jae-suk laughs at their analytical methods whereas they’ve decided to go with the flow.
But both methods land them at the same spot at that same time, to which Seung-gi wonders, “Does that mean we’re at the same intelligence level?”
Meanwhile, Jong-kook and Bora pull up to another stop where their next clue lies waiting. Turns out their logic (along with Hye-jin’s) to travel another eleven blocks is right, and as expected, they blow past Haha and Suk-jin, alliance be damned.
They end up at the stop at the same time, where they’ll have to correctly guess how many passengers will get off at the bus stop. If they get it wrong, they’ll have to squat while carrying their teammate. Ow, that sounds painful.
Both teams get it wrong, and it’s no surprise that Jong-kook has no trouble whereas Haha is already struggling.
On the bus Jae-suk notes that Hye-jin was already dating the soccer star during her last appearance (the Macau/Vietnam trip), waiting for everyone else to fall asleep to talk to him. Aw, that’s cute.
They tease Kwang-soo for possibly harboring interest towards her at the time, but Seung-gi slightly changes the subjects, saying that he played soccer with Ki Sung-yong was and that he was really good. They’re all like, Duh, he’s on the national team!
Then they laugh over Jae-suk and Kwang-soo’s participation in the Asian Dream Cup, which her husband also played in. And ha, that picture of Kwang-soo is totally classic.
Back at the bus stop, both teams guess correctly and acquire their next hint: Haha’s restaurant.
The Christmas themed teams aka Red and Green ready themselves for the squatting task. Both teams get it wrong… as the Monday Couple and staff members file out of the next bus. HA, what are the chances?
Lucky for them, the Monday Couple guess correctly on their first try and move on.
Haha and Suk-jin read their mission at the restaurant where they’re tasked to peel and eat hot potatoes while holding hands. It’s also cute how the Purple (Jong-kook and Bora) and Yellow (Haha and Suk-jin) have joined forces to create the “Bono Bono” Alliance.
Haha and Suk-jin gape to hear that they have to consume five in a minute, but that’s still not as bad as Jong-kook and Bora who get stuck with seven. Well now that’s just impossible.
It’s horrible of me to want to see them suffer through eating hot potatoes, but we cut back to the Christmas teams. Kwang-soo slips but holds on to dear life, which hardly matters since they get it wrong anyway. When Kwang-soo promises to do better next time, Jae-suk pipes: “You’re better off hoping that you’ll do better in the next life.”
Favor is on their side because Kwang-soo and Seung-gi pass the next round, and in an effort to exact a little revenge, they miss their first taxi.
Back at the restaurant Haha deduces that the five cards correspond to their five-digit number, which means there has to be a ‘1’.
We do get to watch the Monday Couple try to down the hot potatoes, which makes for a hilarious watch. They fail, however, but Jong-kook and Bora choose one potato and pass.
Kwang-soo really does make the funniest facial expressions, doesn’t he? He instinctively recoils at the burning sensation in his mouth and the cast likens his jerky movements to an actual giraffe.
He and Seung-gi end up with one potato on their next turn—oh, how smart! They smash the potato for it to cool quicker before they eat it, and it works.
Haha and Suk-jin along with Jae-suk and Hye-jin finish last, so they sit down for a proper meal. It’s not long before they ask her about her married life in England (where her husband plays for Sunderland) and Suk-jin smiles warmly, saying they can keep each other warm.
Haha tells him to do the same with his own wife, to which Suk-jin answers: “It’s hot in my house!”
It starts to snow and when Ji-hyo makes a wish for the first snowfall, Gary tells her: “I’m a bachelor. Don’t wish that you want to marry me.” Ji-hyo: “I’m a bachelorette.”
It warms up again just in time for their next game, where they’ll all need to jump over a hula hoop. They get some audience participation, and it looks like Jong-kook is about to pass when Kwang-soo interferes.
Kwang-soo does the same for Gary, whose hula hoop gets caught in his family jewels (owww), but karma comes to hit him like a boomerang and he suffers the same.
You would think he would have learned his lesson by now, but when the Monday Couple is up again, he grabs hold of the hula hoop, sending Gary into another painful spell, and Ji-hyo grabs a fistful of hair.
Jong-kook and Bora finish first as they have all day, which Jong-kook points out that all of that is pointless if they fail the final mission. They’re met with a math problem when they arrive to add 1.4 with 3.57 and Jong-kook’s facial expression matches mine.
He gets it right, however, and rubs in that being a gym rat doesn’t automatically make him dumb. Here they’ll have to chuck their shoe into a basketball hoop exactly 4.97 m away to gain entry.
That’s when Kwang-soo and Seung-gi arrive, and Bora prevents any interference by sending Kwang-soo to the ground. Then with The Last Match soundtrack aptly playing in the background, Jong-kook succeeds. And like a miraculous stroke of luck, Kwang-soo does too.
There’s a door with nine buttons inside where they’ll need to guess the correct number for said door to open. Catch is, each person has only got one shot. The Number, as they call it, has something to do with today’s mission.
After a pow-wow strategy session, Jong-kook and Bora step up first, armed with one of two possibilities. We already know from the start that Jong-kook’s guess was wrong, but their logic made sense: Add eleven, the five squat punishment, the minute time limit in the food mission, and lastly, the three audience members who helped out.
The other teams have an advantage to use their deduction skills to eliminate any possible wrong guesses ahead of them. But it’s still scary to watch the floor fall out from under Jong-kook, whose disappearance spooks everyone.
Bora climbs up with a smile anyway and gets it wrong. And no worries—they fall into a ball pit.
Hye-jin steps up next and uses the first number in each mission… which she gets wrong. Jae-suk decides to rehash his answer, and Seung-gi says that they only have one answer. Kwang-soo suggests that he try to think up another answer if they get it wrong then, to which Seung-gi responds: “I’ll just go home.”
Kwang-soo’s been trying to establish himself as a leader all day, and Seung-gi says if they get this right, this truly makes him a leader. Kwang-soo: “Are you trying to shunt responsibility on to me?”
He presses 14358, a combination that confuses everyone, and the dramatic buildup is making me nervous. The lights go bright and Kwang-soo turns the door handle… and it opens. Yayy!
Kwang-soo leads Seung-gi inside where their gold prize awaits, and now he explains how he arrived at his answer: the first characters in each clue spelled out “Add 1.”
Seung-gi praises his team leader, saying that Kwang-soo pulled through at the last second, but Jae-suk runs with it to mean that this is his last appearance on the show, and offers up mock sympathy.
Bora: “Does this mean a spot has just opened up?” Aww, I hope not! Way to go, Leader Kwang-soo!

Running man is my second favourit variety show after 1n2d. And ep 121 with hoedong seungi is my favrt episode to date. I liked this episode too. But wish it was not so scripted and bland. Wish they did 2 episodes with chasing and name tag ripping. The pd seems to be running out of concepts and missed to strike a hit out of the park with varitey prince and bora who are always a treat in variety's. wish they will have seungi again against running man team with more funy and intense games.

I gotta agree this episode was pretty bland. Not much exciting moments, it's like they didn't think about the concept at all. They totally wasted Seunggi and Bora. Which is a shame cause based on the footage of Seunggi's concert, he and Bora have amazing chemistry. It would've been interesting if they played off a little off that for the show. After all didn't Bora come with Seunggi to promote his concert?
But yeah it was really so mehh I'm a bit dissapointed

I was bored when watching the raw, so bored that I shut off after 40 mins. But well, this is an episode where the subtitles really help. It engaged me all the way, and I was entertained.
The good:
- Jong Kook peering through the camera lens to pick out the number for the hot potato. I died. That is so him
- Poor Jae Suk looking like he was really suffering carry Hye Jin so many times
- Green and Red team waiting, and then who comes out of the bus? Pink team and their many crew members
- Bora. She was such a bundle of energy throughout the whole episode. I've been waiting for her to come on proper since she proves to be so athletic in other variety shows. She was so hyper without being annoying, and so much fun. Her crazy laughter when she picked 1 for the potato, and "I'm okay!" after dropping into the pool of balls. I'd love to see her back
The bad:
- Fake team pairings. Cmon, why create a game to supposedly allow the cast and guests to pick rooms when we knew the teams were already pre-determined? So Gary suddenly had pink cap emblazoned with "KANG GARY" on it that he could pull out immediately once he knew he was on the pink team? Gary and Jae Suk looking towards the staff before walking over to their designated rooms? It wouldnt be by choice, cmon. The PDs would not risk having a Ji Hyo-Hye Jin team, or a Bora-Hye Jin team for example. And Jae Suk and Jong Kook just "oh so happen" to be paired with a female guest? We're not 4 years old, PDs. I guess, well, what other way can you fake another MC pairing up opportunity right?
And let me devote a whole part to LEE KWANG SOO. You know, I know he's well loved, and he's in reality a great maknae. But his antics on the show are just ridiculous. How many freaking times did he sabotage the other teams during the wheel game? You do it once, fine. To do it repeatedly, that was just annoying. I seriously wanted to put my hands into the TV and push him away. It is seriously frustrating to see other teams' efforts thwarted by him for nothing. I would have loved it if Gary and Jong Kook, main recipients of his sabotage, would have done the same to him. But they're too classy for such nonsense.
I loved it when Ji Hyo, Bora and Bora's foreign citizen retaliated against him. And then as if that wasnt enough, he went to try his dirty antics again during Purple team's shoe throwing time. Thank goodness Bora reacted fast enough to wrestle him to the ground.
The problem with Kwang Soo is he doesnt know when to stop. There's a fine line between being funny and obnoxious and he's crossed the line long ago. He should really take a look at Haha. Haha can be equally loud, and he also sabotages occasionally. But Haha knows when to do such nonsense, and when to be a supportive teammate. That's the difference between a variety vet and a rookie. It seems like no games can continue normally as long as Kwang Soo is around, and that's just sad.

over-analyzing how the teams were paired up is unnecessary tbh. even if it's scripted, it didn't take the fun away from the episode so no harm done.
i agree with the gwang soo bit, he can't edit himself and that's his weakness. even the members are aware of it, jihyo even said in previous episodes that gwangsoo have this compulsive need to stand-out. :c

I wasn't bored as you were during the episode, I actually enjoyed a lot of it and was entertained (but that may be my overwhelming Seung-gi love shinning strong)
But I completely agree with your bad section, so much so that I'm not going to bother writing it out myself.
The PD's want to select pairings? fine, but then don't pretend it's completely random and OMGz the teams worked out perfectly. So. Lucky. I don't even mind the pairings (for the most part) but pretending it was all luck annoys me a little.
I agree about Kwang-soo too. I even thought while watching, sabotaging once is one thing but continuously making it impossible for other teams to complete missions is frustrating to see.
You could even see that Bora surprised herself when she wrestled Kwang-soo down. She must have been very frustrated by that point to instinctively do that. Can't say I blame her either.
I especially feel sorry for Jong-kook in regards to Kwang-soo's actions. I know they are really close off the show, but while filming if Kwang-soo has the opportunity he will mess with Jong-kook, even if they are on the same teams.
Someone should tell him to tone it down.

the pairing are normally fixed in most games i mean just how many times can the monday couple just happen to get paired and as you say the big two of Jae Suk Jong Kook with a female guest, happen by chance, i think every one knows it and just let it slide. They do if time is short just skip pretending and say these are going to be the teams and that is that, at times also though.
As for Kwang Soo, have to agree I got tired of his antics a score or so shows back, but it is clear that the PD and I guess the Korean viewer are more than happy with him, or he would have been rained in long ago, so he just giving the performance asked of him..again the bottom line is not winning/interesting the games it is being funny while playing them.

IKR..This Gwang Soo sometimes..I know people will say, it's variety show dude..Yes, I admit that I enjoyed almost his framing jokes but sometimes he should know his limit..repeating same jokes is annoying + it looks quite hurt to see..ouch..
But I knew it he is the one who can solve that task easily..congrats Leader!

I think Kwang Soo is just working really hard for Running Man. That whole section with the hoola hoop would have been done in minutes and with no character if it weren't for Kwang Soo's 'tactics' :) and where would the fun in that be?
I was actually touched when Seunggi and Kwang Soo were in the taxi and it started snowing. And then Kwang Soo just started dancing in that little space. And then Seunggi says Kwang Soo should be paid a lot more given the amount of work that he does. And I for one totally agree. Kwang Soo's just hardworking like that, in my opinion. :)

Everyone has different views, personally I would have found it more fun is Kwang-soo hadn't interfered so much. I don't think anyone is saying Kwang-soo isn't trying, just that he doesn't know when to stop and takes things too far.
At times Kwang-soo did do very well in this episode but I'm at the point where Kwang-soo is such a dirty player that I never root for him to win anymore.

IA. You gotta admit the games were kind of easy, esp the hoola hoop, if KS didn't interfere it'd end up being cut fore sure. I know nobody would want to watch the team passing the game at 1st try. It's then I realize for a while KS' role, playing dirty, over-acting, being made fun of, getting scolded/bullied by others, framing, betray betrayed(lol), but in the end it's all for entertainment. Just imagine the show without such character, with nobody tries to spice things up when it's uninteresting. Every RM member has their role and they live up to it, KS' role just happens to be like that. I don't say KS makes RM himself, but without him RM wouldn't be the same. It's like we need a shameless, kind of stupid character, easy character who would over-act and does things that NOONE else would do because it's not their character/image!
Btw, if you watch RM regularly, you'll notice moments when KS doesn't act his role and as himself and he's very nice. You know it's not for camera because sometimes he's barely in focus on screen. An ex is how he helps Jihyo several times or feeds her, or when in an ep where Jaesuk looks very tired and he held on KS' arm when they walked away. All just to say what we see on a tv show is just for fun, fictional, it's not real, so no need to judge someone over it.
Sorry, I got away with my rambling lol

I agree with you in a sense. The games do need to be spiced up and cheatery does make it more entertaining. I'm really not against cheating and sabotage in this type of variety shows. It's fun to watch and the cheatery is built in.
But why don't people complain when others do it? The problem here is not that LKS is the one to do it. The problem here is that he
1) Does it until it comes off in an abrasive way.
2) lacks finesse in the manner that he does it - too obvious aka over-acting
3) Doesn't know when to stop
4) Does the same type of things over and over in different episodes, and most of the times it's aimed at one person - KJK. He's basically a one trick pony.
Nowadays when I watch the new episodes, I can even comment before he starts, "Oh, LKS is going to sabotage KJK now."
5) Most importantly, it's different when the sabotage done is successful and you get all the cast rolling around in laughter. But you know that there's a problem when the rest of the cast are not amused and they're standing there looking half annoyed. It makes the atmosphere of the scene different. And that is what LKS has to learn. Tact, in precise. He does not have what Haha or YJS has. They do it without offending. He misses the boat half the times.
Talking about this episode in particular, I'm offended that he is trying his tricks when civillians are involved. He's not just sabotaging his castmates who know it's for entertainment. He sabotaged the whole team which isn't sporting.
(Oh wait, he did the same thing in the park jisung episode 96 during the tug-of-war game which comprised of civillians too right? I'm really annoyed by that too.)

You people really need to just calm down a little. LKS is really working hard with the character and FYI, if you people are so fed up with his OTT interference (which, w/o him, will make most of the missions boring as hell), I could come out with how other members are sometimes being too much against LKS, too. Sometimes I can sense their teasing were quite hurtful though I know in reality, is unintentional. Plus, LKS and the guys did a lot of amazing stunts but it's always downplayed whenever Ji Hyo or any other lady guests are around. Ji Hyo is one of the weakest members but we're always shoved on our face on how amazing she is/how smart she is and later comes the caption 'as expected of our Ace' which left me later with a WTF reaction. If you want to talk about annoying, these things are wven more annoying than LKS overreacting. At least, he doesn't fail to make me laugh because he is genuinely funny. Sorry, I'm still going to root for him every week, and so will his other million fans.

Guess I ain't the only one to find the fake pairing game so woefully unnecessary. Everything falls into place so 'coincidentally' that it's smacking your face so hard telling you that it's scripted.
Might as well have that flying chair game determine who can move on first to find the hints instead of wasting time faking some kind of 'telepathy' or connection thing between the 'couples'.

I don't watch RM regularly but this episode I have to watch because of the guests LSG and Bora. I must say it was an enjoyable episode for me, love the cute Lee SG + KS couple. I'm really not fond of RM these days but I'm not gonna lie, I liked the episode - most likely because of Seung-gi but what the heck lol. I loved how he kept saying he doesn't understand RM's concept... me too Seung gi yah, me too!
I loved hye-jin's confession about calling her then boyfriend. I was awwwing at that. So cute! And Bora is really game and fun. She wasn't passive sitting around and waiting and I love those kinda guests! Her 'science student' moment with Jong-kook was so cute. But honestly; RM just needs to get back to being fun. Nowadays its totally inconsistent and scripted. When its not, its boring. I loved it when Hye-jin said - when did we have to use our brains in RM?!? What's with the mathematical equation, it was so weird. Last time Seung-gi came, I was laughing till I had tears. This time even he couldn't make me laugh as hard because the games were just so meh. The whole game they played - I still sorta didn't get it... it was so WTF to me.
On another note, how adorable was it when Seung-gi told Bora - Dont worry, Oppa will stop him (kwang-soo) only to have her threaten him that she wont perform in his concert if he fails to do so. Then he just makes this hilarious face that says that-was-so-not-the-deal-here. Ha! Last time he was in RM, Shin-hye also threatened to tell on him because he betrayed her. He's so cute with both the girls its so much love <3. Can't believe Bora and him would have so much hot chemistry after their banter.

Ikr. If they so into hot pairs why not seungi and bora? Seungi usulay have chemistry with everyone but at the opening with bora it was way hotter than with psh. I felt seungi didnt even try he was like 'letz get this over' with and went with the flow. The whole episode was random and didnt make sense. I watched it raw too and was realy bored and yawned twice.
Dont get me started on kwangsoo. He was too much that even seung gu realized that there is no point fighting with him and its just better to let him have his way. I have no problem
With monday couple being set up
Again coz they were entertaining.
I have only one wish and thats seung gi abd bora might come again a litle sooner than waiting another whole year to comeback to rm and that they will give us a awesom show.

For those who want to see the actual (fancam) performance of Seunggi and Bora at his year end concert, here is a footage..

It's worth the shaky cam quality...Bora looks like she's only wearing a shirt lol her shorts were so short but damm they looked good in that performance

When I was watching it on dramafever, the line was translated as "I'm single" so maybe Jihyo was implying that she's not dating her CEO anymore? I don't know but after cooling off for a while, Monday Couple has been back full-force lately so maybe it's because Jihyo broke up with her boyfriend.

Thanks for the recap gummi!
Sorry but this ep was a bit meh for me. It's such a shame because the guests are known to be great in variety but I felt that the PDs didn't capitalize on it. It's like they spent so much effort into creating the math puzzles and hints that they forgot about the funnies.
I mean c'mon the cast spent so long getting to places but the games they had to play seemed like an afterthought.
I agree with a lot of the comments here about Kwang-soo's annoying antics. He's usually one of the more hilarious cast members (his toad faces never fail to crack me up)) and he knows what would make the screen time; BUT he still doesn't get when enough is enough.
Pro:
KJK and Bora were adorable together. Loved their (few) oppa-dongsaeng moments together and wished we could have seen more of it! It's great to see him paired with a female guest without the usual forced lovelines.
Birth of a new variety bromance -LKS and LSG! Heodang and Giraffe were hilarious together. The only thing to make it better is if you add the Grasshopper MC just like before lol.

This episode is a little meh for me too. I don't like it so much when they are paired off and then sent off seperately. It cuts down on the interaction oppourtunities. I don't know, there's not enough interaction for me this ep although the Monday couple is great when they're together. Even if they are paired by the PD, it's still good. Heh.
I would have liked to see Jae Suk paired with Seunggi thou. They were hilarious in ep 121 when Seunggi was trying to convince Jae Suk to trust him.
The games and the theme have no link and are too forced. The middle has nothing to do with the head and the tail end of the show.
I'm so tired of Kwangsoo's antics too. He does not understand that he is funny by being himself. He does not need to deliberately do so much antics which makes everything look forced. His toad face is hilarious, for example, and he does not even need to do that deliberately. Just be yourself, LKS.
His antics are getting really abrasive. I can see him gauging whether to start the disturbances and he is just deliberately doing it for variety purposes, it's not a spontaneous action. Which is a wrong move as he does not come off well anymore. And yes, doing something once is enough and he does not know when to stop. Even the last episode, one of the baseball atheletes does not want LKS to be on his team and he has to be taken off camera and convinced by Jae Suk.
It has been 3 years of RM. I would like to see him evolve and grow his character. It's time for the next phase, he shouldn't be stuck in this tired loop anymore. I actually like his "meanie coach" persona very much. It's in ep 14, I think. That's awesome.

LKS's real personality is shy, reserved and withdrawn. He doesn't like to boast and is quiet in real life. You can have a taste of it in the Indonesian interviews where he purposefully switches into his Running Man character.
He plays a concept that the PDs ask him to because his real life personality isn't suitable for variety. (Though he gets all the luck of the Variety Gods)

I didn't even think of it, but now that you suggested Jae-suk and Seung-gi I remember those scenes and wish they were paired! It would have been awesome.
I found that very telling, that the baseball star had watched the show and didn't want to be on the same team as Kwang-soo based on his behavior on screen.
It also seems like when Kwang-soo yells out NOOOOOO! now, a member will step in a tell him to stop. I wonder if it as annoying to them as it is to me.

The PDs ask him to do all of that. =P And the PDs also ask the others to rein him in as part of the joke.
Just like the Monday Couple is a concept created by the PDs, but fans swear it's real.
Just like YJS in real life is quiet and unassuming, but on variety, he's outgoing, hogs the spotlight and likes to dance in tight pants. Plus the whole affinity for green was added.
=P People take it a bit too seriously sometimes. "Why are they sabotaging?" Why is he acting that way? Why is Haha hitting on all the women? Why is KJK weak to women? Why do they keep bringing up YEH? 'cause the PDs asked them to. The point isn't winning or losing or who is acting what it's to have fun and bring some laughter to South Korea. And some jokes are just that little bit more cultural.
In trad. Korean theater there is something called the "Clown" Kwang Soo fills that position while everyone else plays straight man so he can seem wilder. Takes a lot of work to act against type.

What?? Variety isn't real??
Mind. Blown.
All kidding aside, I am aware that each member has a variety persona but if Running Man is scripted to the degree you are implying I would be surprised. Do you really think that they need be told exactly what to say? Most of them are variety veterans so I think the cast knows how to create situations where the guest shine or they have amusing banter without being directly instructed.
I'm Korean but even if I wasn't I don't think it would matter because I don't think this is a cultural thing. If it was the baseball player from last week wouldn't have been hesitant to have Kwang-soo on his team due to his behavior on the episodes the baseball player watched.
Kwang-soo may have his role, but I maintain my opinion that he takes things too far and isn't as entertaining anymore. He used to be one of my favorites but now he is my least liked member.

I liked the ep., but for me it was one of those 'breather' eps that gives everyone a bit of a rest - no wild chasing or tag ripping. One thing, tho. If the RM pds are aware of the quieter level of the show, they should at least come up with some newer games when game time rolls around for the teams. Rocket chairs, hot potatoe, etc., have been done to death and that bus game was just writers being lazy. I did like the trap door drop (they must have been watching "The Ellen Show" for that idea!) - but the math stuff was just yuck. I'm with Puppy for that one. Good thing he was teamed with the Betrayer who wanted the win!
One thing - could Song Ji-hyo look any more exhausted than she did for this ep.?! Those under-eye circles were practically in another zip code, her hair was a mess and she needed some serious zzzzzzzzzz!
Thanks for the recap, Gummimochi. :-)

Can the PDs talk to Lee Kwang Soo regarding his behavior in the show? I know that is his variety persona but it was getting TOO MUCH!! how can he do that to his hyungs? I pity Jong Kook and Gary! That is really dangerous and may hurt them. I love Running Man and I hope they will continue to think of good ideas for the games..
Some funny moments here and there but an average episode for me. Two questions: 1) what's up with the spoiler at the beginning? 2) why did the Pds make the first game so script? Obviously the teams were all paired up before hand. Stop all the nonsense about, "oh such a coincident!' This tactic does not work and we know that RM is a variety show. Anyway thanks for the review.

As if the PD would talk to Kwang Soo, they even encouraging him to do so. Remember earlier episode with Joong Ki, where he said Pygmalion and Joong Ki said Pygmalion Effect, and then he said that he's not finished his part and sabotaging Joongki's answers. Even in this episode it's shows PD attitude toward him, when in the first game he''s obviously lost, but the PD said the game isn't valid and change it to Mu-jik-Pa where Kwang Soo excel it. And, just like how Suk Jin push his own team mates in 2NE1 episode, or countless of Haha disturb the other team when they're gonna win, it's part of their character as Betrayal Team and the PD will let it be as entertainment part. For me the show isn't the same without them, or their character.

It's all scripted. Leave LKS alone. And I agree with spartakookie and hahahadong. LKS was one of the most bullied characters and sometimes, they were too much but I'm not seeing anyone here complaining? Why the double standard? You people are tired of his antics but I could say I am also tired with some other elements of RM too; especially when Ji Hyo won certain episodes; since most of the wins are not rightfully hers. She was given too many free passes+sometimes she can overreact and be rude to LKS but he never retaliated and allowed her to do anything to him. Why? Because it's all acripted+she's female and everybody tones down when it comes to handling women cast+in reality, LKS is such a gentleman. So, to you whining babies about LKS, just back off.

I freakin' loved that episode and I'm quite surprised and amazed that here, a very few liked it too lol.
Guess I have very different taste when it comes to Running Man episodes. As far as I know, I stopped taking the comments in a personal level because some like when there are interactions, some when there are actions and one of these things are missing, the group goes wild so oh well, going to enjoy RM in my own :D
Anyway, I didn't think Kwang Soo behavior was innapropiate or annoying. How many times his hyungs playfully bullied him and yet, no complains but when it's KS, it's "OH GOSH', HIS CHARACTER IS ANNOYING AND BLABLABLA". Even if I can feel frustrated with someone in one episode, I know it's their character, I know it's to be entertaining and so after watching, I won't mind. Like when Jihyo slapped hard KS, I was WTF at the moment but then, they hugged each other and all so it's cool.
Perso, I think he made the whole game funnier and entertaining. Granted, like KJK said, the game would have gone smoothier but we are here for variety and not just them doing missions (isn't what most people here were complaining in some episodes ?)
Whatever, I liked all the games. The finding bus station can be seen as long but it was great to see how team managed to finish their missions and gosh', each of them had equal screentime. Well, kind of but you didn't have the team HaHa and SukJin being forgotten in the background. They had their parts too. Hope that PD and editor will continue that way ^^
KS is a geniuuuuuuuuuuuuuus :D It's great to see him win and his couple with SeunGi is just freakin' awesome. I hope to see them together in the show or another. They've got good chemistry for sure ^^
I loved the little "familiar/intimity/family" moment when they talked about Hye Jin's married life and how she waited for them to sleep to call him. The sweetest XD.

True, and I can't believe their complaints actually existed on the net. Sometimes I don't understand what are they whining about. It is part of the show on how LKS' character is portrayed. I wish I don't have to read these mean comments and take it personally but I feel I have the rights to tell these so-called fans to back off a little. I really enjoyed the episode and I'm so glad LKS won. Yet, reading these comments kind of takes away the joy that I had earlier. These people's expectations are just ridiculous. The whole thing that happened with Bora and the baseball guy who 'didn't' want LKS to be on the same team... I just think these people are overanalysing everything when they are meant to be nothing but entertainment.

While understanding that it is for variety, Kwang Soo can be a little hard to watch because of his actions. I am no expert, but as a variety cast member, he should live up to the expectations. By this I mean "variety" literally. Sabotaging a team's attempt is by no means wrong, it is an integral part of Running Man. However, Kwang Soo should try to do it such that it is funny (not just the first time only) and also should try to do something new each time, and hopefully allow for a kind of "cooling off" period, or some cut off point where he does not do anything but watch. Or someone else could do it instead. But I will always be a fan of Kwang Soo, and every member of Running Man. Running Man Fighting!

you know people who totally disappointed with lee kwang soo, doesn't make sense at all. there's nothing wrong with him. maybe his not that intelligent like the other cast but without him in running man is totally sucks. and the show will just end up shortly and so boring. i always watched the show, and many times i saw kwangsoo betrayed.but, hey, its a variety shows, what can you do? if you hate kwangsoo stop watching. coz you can never stop him, he is part of the show. you know what, if your part of the runningman i guess your not suitable for it because when someone sabotage or betrays you, you may end up very angry, "why did you do that? "pushing him away or even wanted to punch Him ha?" and it takes your pride so high just to win the game.well, i tell you it doesn't shows good. well i love all the cast of runningman. Some of y'all take things too seriously. It's variety. RM is considerably scripted to makes things more interesting, if not they wouldn't have the popularity.
The RM members have already said KS on TV is not the same as KS irl. He's actually very quiet, reserved and extremely kind. He takes really good care of the members but people don't see that they only see 'cheater KS'. He's basically a young Yoo-nim. He's still a rookie so he's made to fit a role, to be the butt of everybody's jokes, the 'loser'. Like how Yoo-nim had to wear a grasshopper mask or be covered in dirt all the time to stand out during his rookie days since no one could remember him.
KJK said in Running Man that members/guests shouldn't take things personally or be disappointed. It's all part of the show. And despite his harshness/bullying to LKS they're actually best friends. It's just a role they play on TV.
And JSJ even said he wished he had LKS' character/role since it makes him stand out and gives him personality.
RM is a family, they all work together to create entertainment. We as fans should be understanding and love them all equally and not hate. Yah?
