Chun Jung-myung courted for new OCN thriller
by girlfriday
Ooh. It’s been a while since Chun Jung-myung (Queen of the Night) has done a good drama, but this might just be the one to break his streak. Cable network OCN is considering a new series for the spring called Ten Days Ago, and the production is reportedly in talks with Chun Jung-myung to headline. In keeping with dramaland’s rule of twos, it’ll be another condensed-time thriller aiming to air a month after Three Days. Guess race-against-the-clock action heroes will be this year’s time-traveler (though the future of Three Days looks far from certain).
Ten Days Ago is a thriller about the final ten days remaining before the statute of limitations runs out on a crime. One person races to uncover the truth while the other struggles to keep it hidden in a “breathless fight to the death.” Chun Jung-myung is up for the hero role, and the interesting part is that it’s unclear if the hero is doing the uncovering or the hiding. There isn’t much character background other than the fact that he carries deep anguish because of something he did fifteen years ago. The traditional route would be to make him the victim struggling to uncover the truth, but if he did something wrong fifteen years ago, it’d be a cool twist to have us root for the criminal.
The series is being produced by movie people, which might be a draw for Chun Jung-myung. Directing is PD Kim Yong-kyun of the horror movie The Webtoon and writer Ahn Young-soo who worked on Itaewon Murder Case and Typhoon. It’s a 10-episode series, which ought to make the episode breaks for the ten-day story pretty simple. I’m sure by this time next year we’ll be seeing the rom-com version, Seventeen Years, Three Months, Two Weeks, Six Days, Four Hours and Thirty-three Minutes From Now, but for now I’m looking forward to this new trend of gritty action heroes and the tight rein on narrative that’s inherent in the premise. I liked Two Weeks, so here’s hoping that each drama improves upon the last. Let the best clock-ticking thriller win.
Ten Days Ago is hoping for a March broadcast on OCN.

I agree. It would be more interesting if he was the criminal and it was about him trying to outsmart the cops and not get caught.
Would Dramaland go there? Even on a cable channel? I feel like every time we are given a criminal to rot for it turns out they are innocent--be interesting rooting for someone who has clearly done something wrong and is probably just going around living life.
Like Lupin (thief) or Light from Death Note (serial killer)?

I agree. Whenever we get close to a real gritty/dark character, they always do something to undermine the grittiness.
That was the one thing I disliked about Heartless City. I think the narrative would have been 100x stronger if Doctor's Son had been a young hustler all the way through. Or at the least a hustler who's tired of crime and is working with the cops to helps end everything.
Most def no one other than Doc should have been revealed to be undercover cops. It was leading into farce by the time we got around to that one gangster guy who turned out to be working for the evil cop chief.
And the tiny amount of actual policing the main female lead did...she would've been better off just characterized as a hooker turned informant. That would've been more interesting to me, personally.
Hopefully since this drama is an OCN joint, they'll go a little further off the beaten path. The fact that several kmovie people are working on this helps.
I really want to sink my teeth into a dark kdrama that lets its characters go all the way.

"I agree. Whenever we get close to a real gritty/dark character, they always do something to undermine the grittiness."
lol, i was nodding my head at this and thinking of heartless city right before i read your next line. heh
If there was one thing i would have asked from the show (aside from a better-written heroine), it was to watch the "hero" just be the villain for once. What if Doctor son truly was your kingpin, drug lord..forget the undercover cop business. I would have really loved to watch jung kyung ho play full on anti hero. Technically he never really was the anti-hero because he was fighting for the side seeking justice.
i guess k-dramaland is just not there yet -- i mean, very rarely do we see them get ballsy on creating a character without a hero's "great redeeming quality". Frankly i'm tired of watching the same ol same ol heros and i wouldn't mind watching a much flawed one, or even a man's decent into madness and the path of evil. (hi breaking bad, i sort of miss you).
It does take really good writing, because anyone can try to create a truly flawed, villainous character as the male lead -- but it takes a great story and execution to pull it off -- because you could only go so far before your audience loses interest. You really have to sell it to them.

I admit, when we found in episode 4 or so that Baksa Adeul was really good, he lost some of his awesome. He gained it right back in the next episode, but I do think I would have loved him just as much if he was simply a gangster who wanted to take control from Busan. I would have rooted for him.
In terms of creating flawed, villanous characters, dramaland came a little close in Gaksital, with Park Ki-woong's character. I mean Shunji and his box of nails. I actually liked his character better once he got interesting and started turning all paranoid and evil.

But there is also the argument that no one is inherently bad etc. Why can't the bad guy be sort of good? I love it when a drama has tons of gray area for both their "villians" and protagonists. It feels more...realistic? I hate really flat villians because they're almost...too silly. Too makjang-y.

It would be pretty compelling to have a character who committed a crime and then completely turned his life around. And then have him need to keep the crime hidden because hiding it protects someone who is innocent. Then you would have a character you can pull for but some dramatic tension that wouldn't be there if the hero was completely innocent.

Can I sit by you while you watch him do all those things too? As long as he's smiling. I'm so afraid that this new thriller will just waste all that adorableness. :(

I like the premise and director and I know OCN is all about the crime, but it does get tiring when every series they make, no matter how original and full of potential the concept (vampires, noir sci-fi etc), ends up just another crime series with stuff sprinkled on it.
I mean, it would have been fun if they focused on the awesome and different premises they choose than use them mostly as gimmicks to frame crime series after crime series.
Maybe if this focuses more on the chase and bitter past aspect than the actual investigative part of things, it will be different. It's still a good new genre for kdramas, but I guess I feel OCN could be more braver with shifting towards the individual genre offered by the premises rather than sticking to crime only.

It's only fitting that my first comment on DB be for a story about Chun Jung Myung, he was my first Kdrama crush, all the way back to when I found Fashion 70's. Sigh, I wish he would go back to his buzzcut. He looked so good with a buzzcut.
But I'll watch anything with him in it. I'll even sit through Cinderella's Sister for him. I hope he does this role, I like seeing him do action-y type roles. Well, that and being a noona-killer.

Im not familiar with CJM's work but id be glad if hes the one trying to hide something. I found out I actually like characters like joo sang wook's "monster that catches.monsters" in TEN that have their dark sides so Im crossin my fingers his role would be a bit like that.
