Wow. Is it that time already? Where did the year go?

Looking back on your list, some of these dramas seem like they aired much longer ago than they did. And I found some I need to watch. Thanks for these lists! Very helpful.

I love this time of year. It helps know what I missed that is worth going back to see. I'm adding I Hear Your Voice to my list.

I Hear Your Voice was a good one. I agree, this time of year helps with the list-making.

So - are you Mandelbrot in the mathematical or culinary sense :)?

Do you mean mandeline as the evil kitchen finger slicer? No! That was one too many trips to urgent care.

It is Mandelbrot as in the Mandelbrot Set of pretty pretty fractals.

This year, IHYV totally win me. But I think Master's sun win in everything.

it was a dilemna between IHYV and Master's Sun and even The Heirs!! apparently, Master's Sun is the winner in almost all the categories!!! :)

yeah lol for the best mane of the year!!!^^

Best mane . . . pfft!! : )

0

Please do not compare Heirs with 2 of the best dramas of this year. I super adore LMH but Heirs script and direction really really sucks. Sorry.

0

IHYV was a good drama ! But Master's sun leads win over for the chemistry. I just cant seem to see the chemistry between puppy and noona in IHYV. Story line was good though. A refreshing script. Master's Sun wins as a whole to me. Heirs is not close to any of these 2..apart from their famous young stars! Heirs started off well….towards the last few, script was bad…cry cry cry..typical of korean drama...

You know what's underrated? Incarnation of Money. I'm sad that it only shows up once on the polls even though it's one of my favourite dramas :C

Yes! watch Nine... it is soooo good... Lee Jin Wook *o*

You need to see I Hear Your Voice. It is a lovely drama despite some darker elements. And you will adore Lee Jong Seok. He will break your heart over and over again, but in a good way! I dropped so many dramas this year, like Gu Family Book (after the first few episodes I lost interest) but not this one. So far I am loving Answer Me 1994 too.

It seems so long ago now, but it was an enjoyable watch. Ditto, Heartless City, which isn't getting love in the polls, because it was a cable drama as well.

Required fields are marked *

I know, I was surprised to see Heartless City rank so low in almost all the polls so far. I find that in many of these end-of-year voting exercises, it's the shows in the fall that get the most votes, simply because they're still fresh in people's minds. I prefer to wait for the Editors' Picks.

Same here. I loved Monstar, which got great reviews, but it being a cable show starring an idol and a model, it didn't really get a good start off. It was my favorite drama of the year. It even made my List of Best Dramas Ever, Necessitating A Rewatch Every Six Months.

0

I completely agree -- every year the winners in each category are almost always the more recent ones for the same reason you've mentioned.
Not to mention, it's always the same ones that win (popular ones, not necessarily the greatest ones) because those are really the only ones majority of people have watched.
Also, it's not like people have all the time in the world to watch every k-drama out there, so i get that.

i didn't notice that, but you're right-- Can We Get Married was actually quite a good drama. one of the best of the year in fact (among the dramas i've watched at least). bummer that it wasn't included.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah I think Can We Get Married couldve been able to participate in quite a number of these categories, like the least tear-inducing first world problem in the case of the main couple. The tagline could be something like "We are two middle-class adults with stable careers of our own and no third party involved who love each other but have to break up because of our moms". I would also put the moms in the overlord categories :p

The kiss happens a few episodes in; it's a cable drama so they can actually have a proper make out scene, woot! Heartless City wasn't on my radar either because I thought it was your typical gangster cop drama, lol. It's not that at all. It's all about the relationships between the characters, and the love and loyalty they feel towards each other. It's beautiful and heartbreaking. It's my pick for Best Drama of 2013, I definitely recommend it.

I'm hesitant to vote for Answer me 1994 still as the best drama this year because I don't know who the husband is, and knowing the endgame will make or break this drama for me. So in the end I chose End Of The World, which everybody needs to see.

A drama which has had over 400,000,000 Chinese viewers!!!
A drama written by QUEEN OF ROMANCE COMEDY,Kim Eun Sook

0

Could that even be possible?

0

This is....sarcasm? I'm really not sure.

0

delulu

0

Don't know to wherever laugh at Heirs fans or pity them. Eh, I'll go with both.

0

I laughed to hard reading your post Heirslover.
Don't even get me started. I hate Heirs. I give it the title: WORST drama of the year. But, you're entitled to think it's the best drama if you want.

0

@pogo, nomad, zodd,
Heirs fans love that drama, you don't.
There must be times when You love a drama while others don't.

Why are they off the wall?
Why call them "batshit"?
Why "laugh at or pity them"?

Why so mean?
Why behave like those love Heirs are inferior human beings?

And Beannies pride themselves on being civilized. You ought to be very proud of yourselves.

0

@KDaddict - you do realise that the 'batshit' part refers not to their taste (allowances must be made), but to their reactions to literally any criticism of that drama, right? Especially as seen up there via Heirslover - if you can say, with a straight face, that that reaction is in any way polite or moderate, then we must not be reading the same comment.

And yes, I am pretty proud of myself for getting salty on people who don't seem to understand the concept of this thing called 'differing opinions'. I don't go postal and ALLCAPS on commenters who dislike the dramas I like, and I see no reason to handle those who do with kid gloves.

0

hahaahaha it's fine that you like it, that's totally up to you, but don't go batshit crazy on all the other sane people who realize it's ridiculously boring.

0

It's just a vehicle to give the actors more fans and a bigger and wider distributions for their money making ventures eg CFs, spokesperson etc. overall the plot is thin and the character development next to non existent. But production values eg cinematography ,editing, continuation etc good. The soundtrack is a bit too obvious but the acting is good. All actors are doing the best with a thin script. - given the calibre of the writer and the director - and the media hype- I hoped for more and better.

0

I love LMH as much as the next person...no really... I love the guy.. which is why I have to hate Heirs and forgive him for Heirs...
lol @Pogo... The problem with Heirs is though it was a ratings hit, we were all waiting with bated breath for LMH's performance.. Thanks to the writer who has proven she hates him, there wasn't much :( .... I enjoyed the first few eps but after that. it went kaput..

0

For me, Mirae's Choice beats Heirs in both most disappointing and wasted talent categories. It COMPLETELY wasted both LDG and YEH, and was actively awful, as opposed to Heirs, which hovered around meh most of the time.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't even wanna start! LGD and YEH! I really wanna them work together again! le sigh! wished this drama never happened!
at least Heirs got OTP scenes :| , though I don't care about Tan and ES and the comedy is not much but there is ROMANCE! god I wanna erase MHIYD from my memory!

I dropped them anyway I couldn't stand the last few episodes of MHIYD and I don't know about the Heirs I just lost interest in it!

0

That drama, I can't even. It had such an interesting start, and everything went downhill from there....

0

And yet, many comments on the latest Mirae's Choice thread seem to indicate that it takes the cake in the "Most disappointing category".

Is it really necessary to call fans of certain dramas/actors 'batshit' if/when they speak up to defend their bias?

LMH is obviously a very popular actor, and yet every time one of his dramas come up for discussion, there'd always be ppl who are very down on it. Invariably.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Why did you even include me in calling them "bats hit"? I didn't do that. Did I say I pity them? I didn't do that. All I did was listing what Heirs was "most" on from the polls. Please see what I said before you just judge, won't you? I think it was Heirslover that suddenly lunged and attacked me.

0

I'd say it is necessary to call out the behaviour of people who seem incapable of tolerating any criticism of their bias. There are Heirs fans who can admit its flaws, and then there are those who cannot, and those people fully deserve to see a spade called a spade. If other drama fans can enjoy their dramas and not use the internet to yell at those who don't, I don't see why Heirs fans should be any different.

Also, dramabeans isn't a fansite for LMH or anyone else no matter how much they are loved here, and if the only response to (legitimate) criticism of Heirs is to hint at some kind of anti-fan conspiracy against the actor, I'd say the point is not only being missed, but given a very wide berth.

0

lol I love how Heirs is dominating the Most Overrated category, but Bo-na and Chan-young have a (well-deserved) lead in the Best Secondary/Tertiary couple stakes.

They are to Heirs what Yi-jung and Ga-eul were to Boys Over Flowers, only this time around the couple in question gets to be together.

Yes! seriously we shouldve just put every AM1994 cast member for breakout performance because they were all either unknowns or overlooked.

0

Required fields are marked *

The Breakout Performance category is SO hard to vote for, because almost everyone in there (and I've seen most) delivered a spectacular performance, in some cases show-stealing ones.

I was really torn between Lee Yubi for GFB (I thought she'd be standard forgettable second lead, but that girl made me cry even in a show I thoroughly detested), Lee Jong-seok for IHYV, Kim Woo-bin for School 2013 (though LJS should have been nominated for that drama too), Ha Yeon-soo and Oppa. Decisions, ugh...

Required fields are marked *

It really was a true breakout, in the sense of 'wow, I didn't know she could DO that!'. Maybe not a star-making role since second lead female roles rarely are (industry politics), but she's definitely made her mark as one to watch.

And I hope she graduates to lead soon, she should take a leaf out of her Nice Guy costar Moon Chae-won's book for that.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

And speaking of Woo-bin and Yubi, they're great in their separate dramas but I absolutely loved them together in Vampire Idol.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

We debated this, but Go Ara was pretty famous before Answer Me. The others had very little name recognition, while she was at star level for years. I do think it was a breakout of sorts, but not in a traditional "this made me famous" sense.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Go Ara wasn't known for her skill, yeah (or blunter terms, she was known as someone who sucked) but she's had a number of lead roles and is known in name. People just know who Go Ara is - pretty, SM, etc. - and she appears on variety more often than the other two (or at least gets more news attention). So technically it's not breakout in that she already was famous? It's just the first popular drama where she's recognized as good.

Although JB made it slightly easier without Ara in the running so i can vote for Thrash Oppa. lol....

But i'll sure be conflicted when it comes to Best Actress at this year's Beanie: Gong Hyo Jin or Go Ara? Oh yes, and Park Bo Young!

Not to mention Best Actor: So Ji Sub , Jung Woo or Lee Jong Seok?

It's so obvious that i only like 3 dramas this year as compared to last years all-votes for QIHM.

I guess I'm in the 10% that actually stuck with Mirae's Choice and have enjoyed it. It's flawed, yes, but it has heart. The relationship between Oppa and Future Mi-Rae is wonderful, as is the frenemy relationship between Oppa and Kim Shin.

Biggest complaint would be how freakin' long they waited to fix that red curly perm on Yoon Eun-hye! The hair, combined with what started as a frumpy look, had zero appeal for viewers of both genders.

0

I have stuck with Mirae's choice too. I like it. It does not have the crack factor but I am enjoying it even though I am not rooting for a romantic pair. And I really enjoyed the unexpected Oppa/Kim Shin bromance the show sneaked in every now and then. They are so cute when they bicker.

0

I am assuming you didn't watch the end right?

0

I miss Mi-Rae's perm terribly. It was the most distinctive hair-do I've seen in a drama all year. She was adorable in it. I expect a half-dozen series to feature that hair-do in 2014. Replacing that fright-wig look we've been seeing a lot of, in 'Mandate of Heaven' and 'Answer Me 1997' and 'Basketball,' among others.

Definitely agree. So disappointing, especially with how well it started out

yeah, I don't want to play down So Ji-sub and Lee Jong-seok's absolutely stellar performances (ok one is a newbie and the other a veteran but we got to see them both with new eyes thanks to IHYV and MS).

But those performances would not have been possible without Lee Bo-young and Gong Hyo-jin anchoring their respective dramas, and never putting a foot wrong in their own performances. And Joong-won and Su-ha would not have been half as swoonworthy if their female leads weren't as awesome and fully-realised as GHJ and LBY made them, because you need to see what they're crazy about after all.

Still looks like she had more fun kissin him tho then again who wouldn't LOL

MEDICAL TOP TEAM’s Kwon Sang-woo: At least you have Yawang's ratings to comfort you at night.
MI-RAE’S CHOICE’s Yoon Eun-hye: Perma-shame

And so much more....but those were the funniest to me.

I wish Queen of Office was included, it was a very funny drama and it was really fun to watch. It was so hard voting for 3 best dramas because 2013 is kind of a disappointing year for me, can't wait for your year end reviews :)

Empress Ki is better than most historical dramas, but for me it has a couple of issues keeping off the top of my list. 1. The girl playing the man parts are way too obvious that she is in fact, a girl.
2. The over the top shyness-almost-aegyo moments when she avoids looking at the prince, when she has supposedly been a "man" for many years.

#2 kind of ruined the ranger-Strider type image I had of her never losing her cools. I don't like it when my heroines lose their cool :(

The drama must have spent fortune on the set and costume for sure.

Im sad too :( but that just shows that k-dramaland needs better-written heroines. Ones that are fully fleshed out, 3D, and awesome. I try to look back but the ones that i can only see as being badass is ha ji won in empress ki, go ara in AM1994, Go Hyun Jung in Queen's Classroom. There's probably more that i'm forgetting but by large they always churn out male characters that somehow steal the show.

Required fields are marked *

I agree - both those shows had leads who were well-written and well-developed, which is definitely a departure from the kdrama norm.

And while I felt Su-ha and Joong-won were fitting partners and romantic interests to those two ladies, there are several options on the list from other series who don't hold a candle to them.

In fact, no female lead character with a love interest is in the 'favourite character' poll at all. What's up with that?

0

Required fields are marked *

And it absolutely sucks that they got relegated to the first world problems category :/

0

@Celery - I'd have thought that drama that followed Master's Sun in the timeslot would have a lock on First World Problems, but apparently not?

Either way, if needing some self-searching and not basing your worth around what some guy (even a hot one who loves you) thinks of you is a first world problem, it's one that more women should have.

0

although I agree that GHJ was awesome in her role as tae yang, SJS was totally interesting and charming as JJW especially in the last few episodes, he took a big risk taking that character because the character was not likable at all on paper. Full credit goes to him for making JJW lovable and pitiful esp when GHJ decided to leave, and considering he had not much experience in rom com I felt he little bit edged over GHJ. As for LBY, I think she already got awarded for her role in one or two drama awards so I don't worry too much about her not being included in fan awards. I was more so impressed by her because she used to be criticized by the fans too much for being boring. I was very happy for her as both of her dramas this year became massive hits.

0

You're totally right!

Maybe that is why Oppa/JungWoo from reply 1994 fell for her. About his ideal type, he said 'cool, confident, tall, and pretty' in an interview (Obviously thinking her).

0

I know, and the omission is a shame.

I mean, why would you put effing Kim Tan (!!) as an option in the poll instead of Go Dok-mi, Jang Hye-sung and Tae Gong-shil? (FBND, IHYV and MS female leads). Because I agree that kdrama needs better-written female leads, but this was one of the years where many dramas really delivered on that front.

And no, 'he's played by Lee Min-ho' is not a valid answer.
