Mi-rae’s Choice: Episode 9
by gummimochi
Things get interesting as important secrets come spilling out and more people get filled in about the future, though, whether they believe it or not is an entirely different question altogether. And even though the future itself can sometimes act like a spoiler, the present still feels much like a complicated choose your own adventure.
EPISODE 9 RECAP
Under the moonlight, Shin leans in to kiss Mi-rae… but she turns away at the last moment, bombarded by the words of doubt about her feelings towards him. Oof. He masks the rejection well enough by suggesting that they get back to work.
Meanwhile Oppa can barely process the idea that Ajumma Mi-rae is from the future, let alone believe it. He dismisses it as another one of her crazy spells, until she cries that he once told her that he was the cause of her shoulder burn. Well now.
A flashback takes us back to her wedding day when Oppa had fussed over the scar and told her the truth that he was the one to accidentally scald her all those years ago. He confirms it now in the present, but Ajumma says what’s important now is to prevent Shin and Mi-rae from getting together.
Shin and Mi-rae enter the allegedly haunted bedroom and they both jump at the sight of a ghostly wedding dress by the window. It’s only a mannequin, however, and they realize the neighbors must have mistook the eerie glow of the moonlight as a ghost.
Their exploration of the rest of the cobwebbed and abandoned place turns up a wedding anniversary photo and books on cancer. The husband was a terminally ill patient, Shin deduces, which means those haunting moans were cries of unspeakable pain in the latter stages of the disease.
The wife’s journal reveals the sad accounts of her husband’s deteriorating state, and tucked in the back is a heartfelt apologetic suicide note dated the following day, asking his wife to move on and keep living after he’s gone.
Shin finds another note tied to the back of the photo frame; this one written by the wife before she joined her husband in death in the ocean they both loved. Blinking back tears, Mi-rae wonders if the couple loved each other dearly, and Shin agrees that they must have.
Then Mi-rae says she’s thought of the ending narration for their feature: That there were no ghosts, just the heartbreaking remnants of a loving couple who suffered together. Shin nods, satisfied.
Back in the editing room, Se-joo runs through the tapes and pauses just before the almost-kiss, slightly annoyed. Oh snap, I forgot that someone has to edit the footage.
Shin walks in just then to hear that there’s a lot of unnecessary clips, and he watches Se-joo delete the ones of him and Mi-rae looking cozy. Those bits must make Se-joo feel uncomfortable, Shins tells him, wondering how he’ll keep his emotions in check that way. He offers to do the work in his stead, an idea Se-joo happily agrees with.
So Se-joo heads down to confront Ajumma Mi-rae about her motives—whose side is she on? Ajumma answers that she’s rooting for him.
After Se-joo is filled in, he asks the burning question on all of our minds: Why did Ajumma choose him to change the future? She answers that he’s a good man from a good family, but what Se-joo is interested in is whether Mi-rae knows he’s a chaebol.
Ajumma insists that Mi-rae doesn’t know, saying she would run away if she did. She offers her help to give him the 411 on Mi-rae, but he declines, she offers up to do anything she can to help him win Mi-rae.
And though hard to tell whether Se-joo believes the “I’m from the future” story, it does weigh on his mind.
Jokey PD is disappointed to hear that there is no ghost for their horror-themed documentary. Shin argues that the concept should change according to the facts, not the other way around.
Mi-rae gets to work writing, half-annoyed and half-amused by Shin nagging her from the sidelines about her messy workspace, telling her to get her ankle checked out already. And just outside, Oppa lets out a sigh.
Oppa asks to see Ajumma Mi-rae’s shoulder burn when he gets home, then laughs in disbelief when Ajumma tells him that she got it removed. His suspicion radar flies up again and he asks for a hair of hers.
Ajumma pulls out a few, willing to cooperate with any test to confirm her identity. But genetics isn’t the issue; what really troubles Oppa is the story that Ajumma came back just because of her financially ruined husband.
The Mi-rae he knows would never be so fixated on money, Oppa presses. Ajumma lets out a deep sigh at that, and decides to tell him the whole truth, which we don’t get to hear.
But whatever it is, Oppa calls his sister out to tell her about an available writer position in television production. He bolsters the argument, saying this is the easier and better path for her. Confused, Mi-rae texts Shin to get some advice.
Shin is on his way out to see her when he’s sidelined by Oppa, who announces himself as Mi-rae’s brother. He’s brought the papers to prove it, and Shin’s eyes grow wide in shock at the discovery.
Oppa searches Shin’s face before asking if he likes his sister enough to marry her, telling Shin to cut ties now if that’s not his intention. As her brother, he can speak into Mi-rae’s life to persuade her to go elsewhere, but Shin is just a coworker. In other words, Shin has no right to intervene in Mi-rae’s life.
So when Shin meets with Mi-rae outside and is asked whether she should accept the job transfer or not, he echoes Oppa’s sentiments that it would be hard enough to enter the broadcasting industry as it is, especially at her age.
Those are all words she’s heard before, but what she wants to know is whether Shin wants her to work elsewhere or not. With Oppa’s words ringing in his ears, he tells her plainly to decide for herself because it’s her life.
She asks in a shaky voice if he isn’t affected by this change, and she’ll really feel abandoned by the team if he tells her to go, too. She’s not looking at him to ask her to stay, but given how much time they’ve spent together, his answer feels like it’s coming from a stranger. Couldn’t he give her just a bit more support to convince her to stay?
But Shin tells her that cutting ties with former co-workers is just how it works in this industry, since it’s everyone for themselves. Mi-rae takes that to mean not to contact him anymore, and leaves, hurt.
Se-joo calls out to Mi-rae on the rooftop, having heard about her transfer. He immediately tells her to stay and that he wants to work with her. “Don’t go,” he repeats. It’s what Mi-rae has been hoping to hear all day, and she works up a brave smile through her tears.
They eat ramyun at a nearby convenience store to lift her spirits, and Yoo-kyung lights up momentarily to see Se-joo alone from her angle, only to spot him with Mi-rae. She leaves Se-joo with some silent encouragement before turning away, head hanging.
Inside, Se-joo suggests that they return to their usual friendly rapport like before. Mi-rae is reluctant at first, but agrees.
They head back inside in a better mood when they hear voices down the hall. It’s Jokey PD working with another writer to achieve his original vision for a horror-filled documentary, and the hurt look on Mi-rae’s face tugs at my heartstrings.
At least Writer Bae is on Mi-rae’s side, irate to hear about the last-minute writer change. Unfortunately, there isn’t much they can do about it, especially since Mi-rae is inexperienced herself.
Se-joo, meanwhile, demands in low angry voice that Jokey PD change the concept back to Mi-rae’s work. His demands are met with amusement before Jokey PD pulls out the hierarchy card, calling him a lowly VJ who just works a camera. Oh you are sooo going to regret saying that to him.
Mi-rae rushes inside moments later, but Se-joo assures her that everything will work out soon, then leaves fuming in silence. Jokey PD tries to justify his actions to Mi-rae, saying that they have a certain standard to uphold in this project.
He also refuses to read her draft, saying there’s no point in looking it over when it won’t ever be aired anyway. Ugh, what a jerk.
Oppa buries his head in frustration at the news, and when Shin catches the tail-end of the conversation, he angrily turns on the spot to talk to Jokey PD himself. Oppa catches up to him before he gets the chance, reminding him that changing writers is a decision reserved for the PD in charge.
Shin argues that he was the one who worked with Mi-rae this whole time and she was the one to come up with the concept. Then Oppa finally bursts, shouting angrily that he of all people wants to go and beat Jokey PD to pulp. As Mi-rae’s brother, he’s holding back right now. “But what right do you have?” To that, Shin asks, “And what if I really like Mi-rae?” Omo.
But it’s still a no because the thought of giving Mi-rae away to Shin makes him uneasy. Shin scoffs when Oppa asks if he remembers the prediction that he’ll be ruined. Oppa reminds him that virtually all the staff laughed because it seemed so close to to the truth.
Shin’s resolute and principled nature may work for him, Oppa says, but it’ll bring hardship for those around him, and he won’t send his sister off to that kind of future.
Meanwhile, Mi-rae winces in pain as she self-treats her ankle injury outside, which is when Se-joo appears and silently hands her gauze and wrap. They’re at the hospital during the pilot broadcast of Pandora’s Box, and the doctor tsks disapprovingly that her untreated injury will leave a scar.
Se-joo says sympathetically that her number of scars have increased, but Mi-rae sees it more like a mark to remind her of her hard work. She keeps up an optimistic outlook on the situation, saying there are times when things don’t work out, and this will remind her to keep working hard.
They return just as the hauntfest portion begins, and as expected, Jokey PD is the only excited one in the room. Oppa wonders whatever happened to their goal to show hope through their show as both Writer Bae and Se-joo offer Mi-rae a sympathetic hand.
It comes time for the ending narration, and Jokey PD starts sweating bullets when Shin misses his cue. Mi-rae turns to excuse herself, when she hears Shin deliver her original narration, word for word. Aww.
Touched, Mi-rae rushes out in search for him while Shin wraps up and leaves the set. She hobbles outside, calling him, just as Shin pulls up from the parking lot in his car and sees her. But he drives off.
The team stays up all night waiting in nervous anticipation for the ratings to be listed first thing in the morning. Shin gets annoyed at his trusty dictionary, which only turns up unhelpful words like “ruin” and “revocation.” Ha.
Oppa wakes with a start and frantically checks his computer to see if their show hit over a 10% ratings, and inches his thumb across the screen… to see a 9.8%. Damn it.
He thinks Mi-rae’s gone crazy when he hears her screaming that her source states 10.2%. That means their average rating is a 10% and Mi-rae wonders what happens now.
That’s what Chairman Lee and her grandson are busy discussing as she says that the show will have to be cut of course. But Se-joo counters that a double-digit average ratings is considered impressive these days, and Grandma laughs that he’s a bit bolder these days.
She agrees to give the show another shot; however, she points out that the ratings slightly dipped in the latter portion and suggests that they change out the writer in charge. Se-joo asks if she means Mi-rae, and Grandma plays dumb about that bit of news.
Se-joo uses a bit of reverse psychology on his grandmother instead, saying that he doesn’t want to take over YBS because the current chairman micromanages her employees. I love that alarmed look on her face when she hears that there was a different writer. Anyhow, it will only be downhill from there and the chairman will be made a laughingstock.
At the same time, the production team waits in anticipation for a call that may never come. But then Chairman Lee calls in with good news that Pandora’s Box is a go for the late-night timeslot, and the team erupts in cheers. Yay!
Se-joo thanks his grandmother and nods that he’ll assume his head of YBS position in a month’s time as promised. She also asks to be formally introduced to Mi-rae, saying that last time didn’t count. Ha, I’ll say.
She’s surprised to hear that Mi-rae knows nothing about Se-joo’s chaebol background, all, What’s wrong with being rich? HA. He is skeptical about Grandma’s first impression of Mi-rae however, and then pumps the security guard for info, hilariously catching him in all of his lies.
Ajumma Mi-rae gets a call from Se-joo, who rang to take her up on her offer to help. She runs into Yoo-kyung when she hangs up, and tells her that it’s game over and that she should give up on Se-joo.
Shin approaches a colleague about a special on the Young Geun Group family to ask about any relatives who couldn’t participate because they were abroad at the time. He gets annoyed by a text from Ajumma telling him to meet her at a Chinese restaurant later that night.
It’s the same place Se-joo has taken Mi-rae out for dinner, and he puts in a quick call to Grandma to join them later. When Chairman Lee arrives, he plays off their planned run-in as mere coincidence, introducing the chairman as his patron.
Meanwhile, Yoo-kyung sneaks into the cleaning ladies’ locker room on a hunch. Her initial search turns up nothing out of the ordinary, but then she discovers Ajumma’s copy of Mi-rae’s brown leather diary behind a loose panel.
The entries about Kim Shin confuse her, so Yoo-kyung pulls out her phone to check the phone number etched inside… which matches with Mi-rae’s. Then she reads one entry that names her as Se-joo’s bride and that Mi-rae was a wee bit jealous seeing them together.
At the same time, Shin meets Ajumma at the same restaurant. They’re led upstairs just as the door to Se-joo’s room slides open. That’s when Shin gets a text from his colleague telling him that Se-joo is the chairman’s grandson aka their future boss aka the future head of YBS.
Shin peers into the room where Se-joo is joined by Chairman Lee and Mi-rae. Then Se-joo turns to look outside and sees him.
COMMENTS
Oh it’s on. What I like about the brewing conflict between Shin and Se-joo in this series is that the tension between them extends further than a girl, which is more than I can say about some other shows as of late. They approach the work with a different mindset, and I like that there’s an undercurrent beneath their personalities that differ from what we’re introduced to, like the cutthroat quality beneath Se-joo’s gentle exterior.
I’m excited at the prospect of how this truth will shake the dynamics between Shin and Se-joo (as well as the team), and nervous that the truth of his family background will be revealed in a month’s time (or less!) especially since Se-joo is worried about Mi-rae’s reaction. But I can place a safe bet to see Jokey PD go, right?
There was a lot more more Oppa in this hour, now that he knows about what happens in Ajumma’s future. Even though we don’t know what he learned, I love that he stepped it up in an effort to protect his sister from a miserable future. He is right in one sense that he’s in more of a position to offer advice to Mi-rae’s life as her oppa (despite his usual prickliness) versus Shin. Though Oppa’s intentions are good, they also open us to a whiff of noble idiocy for Shin to distance himself from Mi-rae for her benefit. I’m never a fan of the move to do anything for the heroine’s benefit without her knowledge, but then again, where would we get any angst if not for misunderstood and hurt feelings?
I did find it an interesting beat that Se-joo was the one to provide the words of concern Mi-rae had longed to hear from Shin. And maybe this is just me, but Se-joo’s words ring a little empty in her ears because they’re not coming from the one she wanted them from.
Another thing I’m looking forward to is how Yoo-kyung plans to utilize the information she’s learned from Ajumma’s diary. She’s tugged at the sympathetic heartstrings for a few episodes now, playing wingwoman to her crush. But the question remains: What would you do if you found out that same crush is supposed to be your future husband? So far Yoo-kyung has been pretty harmless, so I wonder if this might signal a turn in her character into more of a rival.
There’s plenty more to speculate even though we’re past the halfway mark, though, it feels like we’re mostly revolving around the same large issues at hand. Like with Ajumma Mi-rae’s shoulder burn (and her streak of white hair that gives me X-Men Rogue vibes), we learn more answers and left with more questions in this web of mysteries. Maybe there is more suspense that builds with every turn, or simply discover a simple heartbreaking story of love suspended in a moment in time.

I really don't understand why she making herself known to so many people, even if all of them don't believe her either. Maybe it is to give her predictions more weight, but her knowledge of the future is already messed up, and she STILL has not figured that out.

Yup, totally agree with your view that there's a lot more to 'fight' about than a girl in this drama(although i might add the girl here is really worth fighting for!!)
I love that they all take their jobs seriously and Mi-Rae tries to prove her worth so heartbreakingly well. It's nice watching dramas with these sort of undercurrent tones, coz all you'd really want to do is root for her.
I especially love that look(or smirk!) Se-Joo gives Kim Shin at the end. His expression says it all~ and the game is on~

Thanks for the recap Gummimochi!
I really liked this episode. I usually miss small details, but did anyone else notice that when Se Joo was questioning Grandma's bodyguard that one slipper seemed like it had a crown on it and the other a skull? I have no idea what it might signify except that he has a much darker side or got dressed while half asleep. :)

Yeah, I noticed that skull slipper too... yeah, maybe it signifies the power that Sejoo has, and that he could be the King of YBS, or he could become the Dark Prince ... or maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about, hehe!

Thanks for the recaps, gummimochi!
Trying to organise my thoughts:
(1) I enjoyed this ep much more - both the guys stepped up, and the thing I like about Mirae is that she's not afraid to put her feelings on the line and ask for straight answers from the guy she likes.
(2) Loved that scene of them in the haunted house, framed together in the dawn light and surrounded on either side by the bridegroom tux and wedding dress. (Poor Sejoo's got his work cut out for him when they get all symbolic like that)
(3) Granted, Shin's got a lot of self-reflection to do, but better that he hears it now rather than later. Even though it's annoying, everything that Future Mirae says is having the effect of making Shin more self-aware now, so hopefully he can change for the better and avoid whatever future FMR and Oppa are afraid of.
(I really wanna know what FMR told Oppa about Kim Shin and Mirae's future, and what she couldn't tell Mirae)
(4) By the way, FMR told Sejoo that she was from the future, but she didn't tell him that SHE was Mirae, did she?
(5) Sejoo's a very astute businessman and he's dedicated to making YBS a good thing - that moment when he said: "If I inherited the company now, I'd just lose face" - classic!
(6) I love that while Sejoo is a great guy and is always there for Mirae, it's Shin she has these moments of deep connection with (guess it's pretty clear which ship I'm on!), and Shin who makes her dreams come true. It will get interesting when Sejoo's identity is revealed, and he wields the power to make or break careers (including Mirae's and Shin's).
Now descending into drivel...
(7) I love the relationship that Kim Shin has with his dictionary. So funny!
(8) Totally shallow, but even though it's a very preppy look, those simple buttoned-up shirts, sweaters and even tweed jackets on Shin positively had me fanning myself! :)

Thanks so much for the recap.
I had figured more folks would know about the future but wow! A bit clunky the way the reveals were done, methinks. But oh well, it's done. Future Mirae didn't really seem to think ahead, did she? So...in a pinch, she tells Sejoo the truth?
I totally hope YK reads the ENTIRE diary. Just how exhaustive is this diary? How many years of Mirae's life does it cover? It'd be too easy to just read about the marriage and not about her cheating with Shin or thedeath of the person or even about oppa being related to Mirae. I just hate it when only the convenient truth is discovered. And still I'd rather aegyo girl found the diary through Time-cop's machinations rather than Future Mirae's conveniently carrying around the diary.
What's with the mention of the new scar or the disappearance of the old scar?
I'm in love with Sejoo. I don't want him for Mirae. I want him for myself. But alas, I'm too old. No noona romance for me. Where is an unmarried middle-aged (straight) chaebol with an indecent proposal when you need one?

Ahaha, yeah, badass Sejoo with killer instincts is pretty sexy! Not to mention the moment when he silently holds the bandages out to Mirae.
I'm scared for the moment when he finds out Mirae knew he was a chaebol (but then liked Shin anyway).
FMR is telling everyone she's from the future... but where did Mr Time Cop disappear to? And does FMR never think? She keeps telling different people different things - how does she keep all her stories straight?!

And where are the dreaded possible repercussions of Future Mirae's meddling? So far, 100 living-shoulda-been-dead subway survivors, six or seven ahjummas investing in stocks...and....nada, not one cosmic ripple in the time-space continuum.

We don't KNOW there are no cosmic ripples - there might be tons of them. But since they happen in the future, and there is no feedback loop (like Nine had), the future could be a zombie apocalypse and nobody in the present would know.

Oddly enough, the awkwardness of Future Mirae's reveals worked for me -mainly because it seemed in character. Ever since she arrived, she's managed every reveal and attempted machination with a maximum of clunkiness, drama, and screw-ups. I would have been more surprised if she *had* managed the reveal smoothly, LOL. I mean, I have a big soft spot for her, but even I have to admit this time-traveling plan of hers seems like something she embarked on hastily and without too much thought.
"Where is an unmarried middle-aged (straight) chaebol with an indecent proposal when you need one?"
Probably off with their non-Korean counterparts - banging 20-something supermodels. Indelicately phrased, but true!

Ouch! Those 20-something super-models! That hurt. But you're right. Thanks for knocking some sense into me.
Yes, the reveals are very Future Mirae-like. I just wish the writers had revealled in a different way. I mean...carrying the diary to work? Why does she need it at work? And heck, why not let Time-cop use his hitherto-unshown powers to "lead" YK to the hidden compartment?

totally...and yet, when I look at Shin...he "feels" like her husband. Heck, he feels like my husband. There's a normal regular guy husband thing about him. I'm not sure if I see Mirae walking around among chaebol circles. True, Sejoo accepts her hair (which no one else in the drama or dramaland seems to do) and it's good that he's fallen in love with a normal looking girl and not with a perfect aegyo Miss Korea type. But he is one thing and his world is another. So...dreamy Sejoo...buh-bye.

I am loving this series so much.
1. And even with the characters darker sides I am loving all of them. All of them are extremly interesting, but not over the toply malicious. cough"Heirs"cough. Anyway I love all of them. Se Jo is extremly interesting, I never expected JYH to be that intense in a role. I am loving Yoo-Kyung as well, and Mirae and Shin. I don't even have an OTP, as long as Oppa lives I am happy, since I adore him. I think all the characters have really good dinamics with each other.
2. It was so sweet seeing Writer Bae being so supportive of Mirae. By the way is she a single mom? I never played attention o her fingers before, but watching the computer where her son sleeps, can it be she lives in a one room apartment,, and that would mean she doesn't have a husband? don't mind me just my deillusion liking her with Oppa.
3. Does it only alarm me that FMR sais she removed the scar? In the very same episode where Mirae sais to SeJo that the scar doesn't bother her. Even before when she was playing in the pool in the first episode, her scar didn't bother her. She just doesn't seem the type to remove it... suspicious...
Anyway, the preview clips show that Mirae will have a haircut!

@Carole, in previous comments someone suggested that Future Mirae wasn't actually Mirae, but Yoo-Kyung. Which would be interesting, but wouldn't make a lot of sense - why would Yoo-Kyung want to derail her marriage to a chaebol? I guess it could be someone else altogether, but I can't think who. I hope they don't go that route, because it would just seem gimmicky at this point.

I think i winced more about her yanking out so much hair for oppa than she did. I've never had to give anyone a hand full of hair but I imagine it'd hurt me way more than it apparently hurt FMR.

random thought, and it's really more a fun nonsensical speculation than a result of actual thought process, but what if FMR is actually ..... Shin from the future?!?
Actual FMR commits suicide/is in hospital fighting for life etc due to difficult home situation arising from Shin's stubberness.. so Shin feels remorseful, decides she wouldn't've been in this place if he hadn't married her, & sets off on this mission.. that's why he knows his past self so well.. that's why he's able to be so mean and cruel to his past self.. why FMR dresses so immaculately.. and noone in the drama is pointing out to similarity btwn FMR & PMR ( i mean in RL the actresses don't look alike, but within the drama logic, to the other characters, shouldn't they atleast find some features similar, like, 'is that ur mom/aunt/sister?' type queries?)..
.... why he has to carry a frigging DIARY to know Mirae's thoughts and memories!...!
just fr fun! :D

Writer Bae has a husband, somewhere.
Future Mi Rae is defiantly suspicious, but also not the brightest I think. Why does she keep including Shin in these supposedly private meetings between Se Joo and Mirae? I get that Se Joo wanted it this time, but at his confession of feelings (oh wow, seriously over the top, and who does that with witnesses?) she wanted her to see Shin's anger.? I just don't get that in real life. ?? Never mind , I think I answered my own question.

I think it's understandable that FMR is very different from the present Mirae because FMR didn't have the opportunity to have a career which she actually enjoys. Present Mirae is facing a lot of challenges in her current workplace (age issue, lack of needed knowledge though she has some talents) and she has been learning a lot of life lessons from these. Though, I agree that the writers are so far not giving us enough information behind FMR's manipulation etc.

It would be nice if Jung Yong-Hwa and Yoon Eun-Hye became a couple in real life. They look really cute together.

Well my dream came true just having Yonghwa and YEH paired up in a drama. Something that I thought could only happen years from now happened this year. Second lead syndrome paid off for the "Flower Boy Next Door" and "Goddess of Fire" fans, and possibly the "Gu Family Book" fans. So it could happen lol. Still hoping down the line Yonghwa gets to work with her again but as the lead. A Yonghwa-YEH kiss would melt screens if their characters wanted each other. Can't Seju have a dream sequence. Seriously YEH is just so good at them and Yonghwa would get a rare opportunity to learn from the best. His future drama kiss scenes would be solid lol.

I do like that there's more of oppa in this episode. I want to know how he's going to try to make a change, equipped with whatever FMR told him, and if it would actually matter. Because so far, even with FMR's meddling, Mi-Rae's path seems to be headed down the aisle with Shin.
Aside from the story and it's infinite possibilities that make me literally lose sleep at night thinking about it (i even forced the hubby to watch it too so i have someone to discuss it with, LOL), i love the characters and the how the show gave them layers that we can peel off. It's not your cut and dry 1st and 2nd lead, the girl rival isn't (that) evil (yet?), etc. I mean at this point, I don't even mind who she ends up with anymore as long as she just chooses already!! I'm still all for Se-Joo and Mi-Rae, but Shin has been showing a different side to him that's so much better than what we saw at the beginning.
We're now seeing formerly Robot Shin evolve into someone sweet and gentle; and boy-next-door Se-Joo showing the chaebol side to him that's very competitive, and can be somewhat ruthless. I can't wait to see if there's a change in Store for Yoo-kyung too, now that she's armed with FMR's diary.
But the change that i wanna see the most is Mi-Rae's. We've already seen her change from the insecure call centre agent to a woman who goes after what she wants, but even oppa said the present Mi-Rae wouldn't be too materialistic to be concerned about what bothers FMR enough to travel back from the future to change it. So i wanna see that defining moment, or series of events, that eventually turn her into FMR.
Also, we're past the halfway mark!!!!!! I'm so excited to see what else this wonderful show has in store for us :)

So true about not having typical second leads.
I so love it that we're ostensibly on the second lead female's side. She is the one who is fighting to help us viewers get what we think we want. She is the heroine who wants the min character to get what the main chatacter wants.
I also love it that although we're wanting Shin and Mirae together, we also are aware of the possibility that perhaps we might be wrong to be wanting our OTP together. Are we prepared to doom a couple or even one half of a couple even if a different marriage would be financially better for them?

I feel this episode was an improvement over last week’s. There is more of a sense of things moving along.
Props to the show for addressing what happened to Future Mirae’s scar. I remember saying in the first week that it was a glaring omission for FM not to have shown current Mirae the scar to prove her identity, and that it needed to be addressed. And it was! Yay for continuity.
I waver back and forth on the Shin-Mirae pairing, but a chill ran down my spine when they discovered the truth behind the couple who had lived in the “haunted” house. “That there were no ghosts, just the heartbreaking remnants of a loving couple who suffered together” – I really hope that is not foreshadowing!
I’m really intrigued to find out the “whole truth” Mirae told Oppa. Glad to know it’s not just about the money, especially because so many here have dumped on Future Mirae as a gold-digger. Now I want to know what this is really about!
Ah, poor Se-Joo. Props to him for being open-minded and enterprising enough to consult and listen to Future Mirae, even if he retains some skepticism. He has to give up on Mirae, though – boy, she’s Just Not That Into You. Plus, he’s the second lead. Guess he’s never watched any K-dramas.
LOL at Shin and the dictionary. I like how he scoffs at superstitions such as fortune-telling, but his dictionary thing really isn’t very different, is it?
I enjoyed the tension in the last scene. I agree with the recapper that what makes the Shin-Se-Joo conflict interesting is that it’s about much more than just Mirae. The class/workplace/seniority distinctions in Korean society and workplace are being tested between them.
Thanks for the recap.

i wish i felt FMR's heartbreak more ...instead of her anger. If we're gonna go with "it's better to have loved one's truest love deeply, even if one suffers terribly" rather than to "love second-best safely and live a happy life" I'm with FMR. I understand that FMR still loves her hubby but still...a sad married life can really (apparently) destroy even a great love...and leave a heck of a lot of bitterness. Because FMR is really bitter. Are we prepared to have a true love with horrible bitterness....just because we believe in true love? And do we think Shin's personality can be changed?

It's an interesting philosophical question. We're so used to k-dramas focusing on twu wuv that we usually don't approach them with a spirit of realism. But in reality, how many of us would sacrifice a relatively happy life with a "second-best" love for a short period of intense happiness, followed by years of misery? I can't speak for anyone else, but I sure wouldn't.
I think we have seen glimpses of pain from Mirae - in earlier interactions with Shin, with her brother, even after confrontations with Mirae.
Part of the problem is that we don't know what really happened - only the unemployment story. So we judge Future Mirae by those standards, when there could be something much worse going on that would justify her actions.

i think at the end, when we see what Future Mirae has been through, it is possible that we will al want to spare her that unhappiness. When we fully know the truth, how sad we will be to see Current Mirae go off with unchanged Shin...even if he is her true love and we had wanted them together!

I agree 100%! Of course, I'm blinded by 1) Shin acting like such a douchenozzle (new word learned from my tweener niece) last week, and 2) my admittedly overwhelming love for Se-Joo.
Going a little off-topic and speaking of Se-Joo, they really need to start having him show some feelings for Yoo-Kyung if they're going to end up together. Otherwise, it's going to feel very slapdash to throw them together at the last minute.

I think it's going to depend on what caused that bitterness. Although from oppa's reaction it seemed pretty bad. I understand bitter, especially if it's fresh, which it could be for future Mi Rae. However, time can make it a non issue, depending on the issue.
I do think Shin is already changing.
On the issue of true love, if it's one sided it can see why she is so bitter. However, if both are truly in love, I believe hardships can be overcome. Perhaps that is what will happen, Shin's feelings becoming deep enough to sacrifice some of his principles and Mi Rae developing more understanding when he can't. Color me a romantic still. :)

would oppa be so sad if FMR told him that Shin died? Does oppa know who actually died? If oppa is the one who died, would oppa believe his own death was caused by Shin? Is Shin even dead in the future?
So if FMR told him ALL the truth, it might be Mirae or her child who dies.

The lack of a scar points to Future Mirae as possibly not being Mi-Rae, but I don't think it is future YK. When Future Mirae arrived, she didn't know how SJ and YK had first met over water - wouldn't YK have known that? And if it was Future YK, why all the concern and fawning over Mirae's Oppa? Plus, how would she know to cook dishes the way Mirae's mother had taught Mirae?

Oh, wow, my week-long worry was averted, I was worried that Mi-Rae would give in to that kiss. Phew!! For that first few minutes, I was relieved. It is too bad that Se-Joo didn't see the part that she turned away, that would help a lot. I am not worried about Future Mi-Rae having no scar, the fact that in the future all the North Korean women would be stealing the South Korean men is quite realistic. If you read some documentaries, a North Korean woman, an actress, was so starved that she secretly ran the border to marry a crippled old farmer in China just to get something to eat. She was going to be deported by the Chinese government and that broke the heart of the farmer because he would never have had a chance for a wife (women shortage in China).
Mi-Rae is worth fighting for, she is a very kind individual. I love her as well. I don't care if Se-Joo is actually a mean guy or Shin is this or that, I just want the contest to go on unto the end. But the one character I love the most is Oppa, I am actually looking up some of the other dramas that he has acted in. His role is magnificent. I am enjoying the show, I do hope the rating goes up. Thus far, there is no comparison, The Heirs series is giving me a headache. The leading men in the Heirs are wasting their talents (they actually do not have any, they can't even wash windows), what is the point of attending an elite school when you don't even study. How can the Heirs be the future of South Korea?

I am sad to say, just go on the Internet and search for starving North Korean women and you will see a ton of horrible articles. I can see how North Korean women might be desperate in the future that FMR described. Even if they did reunify, it would take decades to get the NK economy up to the standards of the South.
And then there is always stuff like this popping up in todays headlines: "As many as 80 people were publicly executed in North Korea earlier this month, some for offenses as minor as watching South Korean movies or possessing a Bible..."

I hope that country would re-unify. I have talk to a number of my Korean students, they think of the North Koreans as brothers and sisters. There shouldn't be a needless war. But, first thing is first, Seoul is only 45 miles from the border, that is why all of our KPOP stars have to serve in the Army. The "North" has the world's largest army and they can reach Seoul in an hour. Aish!!

- Damn, Saejoo is sassy. He named the romantic clips with a rude description of Shin, I think. And made sure he saw it. He's really proactive in going after her, which is very in personality for him (and why a lot of us were confused at why he seemed ooc in confessing to her).
- I love love love how Saejoo can do everything 'right', perfect action after perfect action - and yet - none of that makes her as emotional as Shin simply changing the last line of broadcast. She'd forever be settling with Saejoo in her heart.
- A+ for Mirae laying it all out for Shin. Being forward with one's feelings must be 'in' for 2013 (Master's Sun the other obvious example). Please keep at this.
- I seem to be one of the minority in having changed my mind that Future Mirae indeed is Mirae (after having doubted it in the beginning).

Oh god. I'm in a dilemma. I don't know who to root for. Both Shin and Se joo has amazing chemistry with Mirae. I don't like Yoo kyung. I never did. Actually, I don't like Han Chae-ah, or whatever the name, of the second lead character. I felt sympathetic for like a second about the fact that she has to play wingwoman to her crush, but then seeing Mirae with SJ, all the feelings disappeared. I love that the two boys are finally in war over Mirae, and am happy that YK is kinda outta the picture. One thing I'm not sure, is SJ going to the dark side? He is very ambitious, you can say, but violent and hateful? Not yet for me. I have to say, I LOVE Jung Yong-hwa a lot, back when he was Shin-woo, and I came to love him in Heartstrings where he finally got the girl. He's different here and I can see a different love story that can occur between him and Mirae if only Shin wasn't there and YK could just, yunno, vanish or something. For a moment there I thought that I'm suffering from SLS (Second Lead Syndrome) but then how come I love Shin so much? I figured out that I'm having this disease called Dilemma, where both the lead and the second lead are amazing actors and have equal adorable and cute chemistry with the lead actress. I think Se-Joo is sincerely about wanting her to stay with the team. The reason I deduce that is from a scene before that when he was truly surprised to hear that she is transferring. Shortly after that he went to tell her that he wants her to stay. From my point of view, he owns the entire company, he could have her in any team and would still have control over her. So I think he is being genuine.

Yoo-Kyung is honestly the only character that interests me right now. Sejoo annoys me, Mirae bores me and annoys me, and Kim Shin means nothing to me, despite being my second favorite of the leads.
I'd really just like for Yoo-Kyung to get everything she wants and for Mirae and Kim Shin to sort out their problems (especially Mirae, who's got so many complexes that I want to simultaneously give her a hug and slap some sense into her). Sejoo can either bugger off or realize how awesome Yoo-Kyung is. While there's fundamentally nothing wrong with the Mirae-Sejoo pair (besides the fact that so far it's built on lies, even if they do have a cute friendship), it does makes me irrationally angry (sorry), so I'm either on the MR-KS & YK-SJ train or the YK-happiness & anti-MR-SJ train.

Yeah, I got turned off by that as well. I found it so rude..and yet...she's after her man and her destiny. I do hate that sense of thinking a guy's yours --or should be yours-- and so you can do anything you want to get him. If this weren't k-drama, I'd hope for a dark horse to get Seejoo. After all, he's not fated for everyone...he's just fated for water. So if I had my druthers:
1) SeeJoo marries Writer Bae after Mirae and Shin go off together...(this would entail writer Bae's yobo dying and water being nearby as Seejoo comforts her but...it'd work.)
2) Mirae marries Shin...then something happens (Shin gets fired earlier an the dying happens earlier) so Mirae could end up with SeeJoo.
But I don't have my druthers so.... gotta keep YK, cause she's in her weird selfish way trying to help the heroine.
Am now wondering how she's gonna deal with Mirae. All these folks in the mix ...with all their choices.

I might be offending a lot of fangirls but this comment is totally on the characterization of SeJoo and Shin and has nothing to do with the actors.
I'm starting to dislike SeJoo's character more and more as my love for Shin grows. It might be the fact that I admire Shin's principle, but it's also the fact that SeJoo is hiding his identity for a purpose that is totally ambiguous. I mean, if he wants to be low-profile, then he shouldn't be offended whenever Shin scolds him, because he IS the maknae VJ in everyone's eyes. If he became a VJ because he wants to learn the rope and climb up from there, he should be much more humble about everything, but he's always being very assertive and is kinda spying on everyone or watching them from this elevated position.
It's almost like he wants to pretend to be nice, low-profile and understanding when it suits him, but then as soon as he encounters a problem, he uses his position in life to his advantage. When someone puts him down as being a lowly VJ, when he's losing the girl, he gets angry because he thinks that his position makes him entitled to everything ( I especially disliked the talk between Shin and SeJoo right after the party got ditched....I mean why bring up the subject of him possibly being something more than a VJ?)......
I don't think that kind of thinking is a bad outlook on life. If you really are a chaebol, you can use your money and power and feel offended when your employee speaks up to you....but be open about it and embrace the fact, no need to pretend to be a nice, considerate person who seems as if he doesn't want to get special treatment because of his position.....
Shin, on the other hand, is really frank and faces everything head on. I really like his honest nature and his character here....

I like your comments but I need to defend Se-Joo a little bit. You must realize it was very traumatic for him to have his confession of love rejected. He told Shin that Shin was trash talking him that the girl actually ran on her own two feet to go after Shin. He pointed out the fact that Shin bullies the weak (like a VJ) but bows down to people with higher position (owner of the company). Those are both very good observation of Shin's character. So I was fine with that. But Lee PD's trashing of Mirae on her debut work because it didn't match his idea of the Haunted Mansion was infuriating to Se-Joo as well. He was also just defending Mirae again. I still like Se-Joo, he has been fine to me. But you could tell he has authority, the way he dealt with Secretary Yoon about getting a cheap apartment to watch his video and dealing with the security personnel.
Personally, I should like Kim Shin because he is a freakin' good basketball player. I live my life on the Los Angeles basketball playgrounds, Shin is about as good an Asian player as I have seen. Of course, he was going against Yoon Eun Hye (who is not bad, by the way). Shin's layups were totally fluid and his hands reached the bottom of the backboard easily. In a later sequence, I actually heard the noise of him rattling the rim even though I didn't see him dunk the ball (sight and sound didn't match). But Kim Shin is a stud basketball player. But I still don't like his temper toward Mi-Rae.

Still with YK's action of looking into FMR's cabinet and reading the diary that was hidden make me not to ship YK and SeJoo.
Both men have their own ego and flaws but I actually want to see SeJoo and MR together because that is unexpected. Both guys are actually decent in my opinion given their upbringings.

I have no problem with Sejoo's role as undercover boss, since everything's for the benefit of the story, and he has discovered valuable insights about the company operations and staff - but I do wonder how he thinks everyone's reaction will be when he "returns" to his top position after a month.
Is he so confident that he can win Mirae's heart within that time, and that the team will forgive him for his disguise?
Speaking of characterisation, I like the alignment and similarity of the Sejoo and Mirae characters - they're both regarded by everyone as the non-threatening team maknaes, but they've both got huge secret identities: Sejoo is actually the future YBS Chairman, while Mirae has a doppelganger from the past following her around the workplace, meddling in people's fates. It's added a nice layer to the show, added to the fact that even Mirae doesn't believe Sejoo's a chaebol, and Sejoo believes she's innocently unaware of his identity. They both have a lot of explaining to do down the road!

I see your point, but I don't think it's quite accurate to say that Se-Joo pulls rank and is not humble every time he encounters a difficult situation. If you review the first six episodes, he very much blended into the background and showed the proper respect to his sunbaes, including the writers, producers, and even Shin.
It is really only once he and Shin start tangling over Mirae that he starts wanting to pull rank. Admittedly, that is kind of shady, but it is understandable and human. Moreover, it's not just about "You're trying to steal my girl" - he is responding to the fact that Shin used his position as Se-Joo's superior (or so he thinks) in their personal entanglement. In last week's episode, Shin kept trying to lord it over Se-Joo, and basically implied that Se-Joo should step aside and not talk back to him re Mirae because he's the sunbae. Se-Joo is very sensitive to people who act based on class distinctions - remember his line about "How would you treat me if I was the head of YBS?"
In essence, Shin started the power play by using his position as lead anchor, and Se-Joo is responding by exerting his influence as the heir. There's merit and faults on both their sides. But I don't think it's fair to say that his actions now negate his whole VJ experiment, which seemed fairly righteous before.

I don't disagree with you but I like that SJ is a product of his upbringing. No matter how nice his basic personality is he's still a pampered, rich boy, used to getting his way and having people bow down to his wishes.

I don't think he's "pretending to be nice" and is "expecting to be treated special because of his position. I think him being rich and powerful is being taken too strongly against him and also his privileged uprbringing is hardly being taken into account in judging his actions. If Kim Shin's "bad temper" can be justified by his being too strict on rules/principles, I wonder why Sejoo little outbursts (which can hardly be called outbursts) can't be justified or at least taken into proper context. I think that's double standards. And it's not like he waves money and power just when he wants. In all those instances, there have been "triggers". For instance, you mentioned about him hypothetically posing the question "What if I'm YBS' boss to Kim Shin"...If you watched the entire confrontation, you'd see where he's coming from. Kim Shin was basically using the seniority card on him, on a matter that's none of the latter's business, to be quite honest so... I guess Sejoo's human side acted on.

Has anyone ever speculated that the person that is "killed" could actually be Mi-rae's Oppa? Ahjumma apparently loves her Oppa dearly, so then there could be a possibility that she loses her Oppa in the future. I don't think Se-joo is the person she loves in the future.

Oppa, herself (spiritually), their child, or even himself ( figuratively or spiritually). I'm not even trying to guess. I'm also open to other options.

I like Shin a lot. He's a decent guy..very decent. But I do worry about why YK supposedly has an affair with Shin in the future. If FMR isn't lying, then could Sejoo's personality have made YK's marriage difficult (and so YK needed comfort from Shin)? Would I want Mirae with a chaebol prince who might have a dark cynical suspicious side?
Of course, now that he's realizing folks can love him even if he has money, maybe the marriage would work out.

Because Future Mirae said so. Now, whether Future Mirae lied is another issue. But I'm just going with what a travelling vindictive angry wife has said.

I also didn't notice this affair thing either. But perhaps it's just a misunderstanding. With Shin's personality he probably feels offended when Mirae's questions him about his relationship with YK and decides not to explain at all. Hence her conclusion that he's having an affair.

Do you remember? Ahjumma and Mirae were in the stairwell in Ep 3. This was after Mirae and Yookyung faced off about experience being more important than age, and YK being interested in 2 men at once.
FMR supposedly told Mirae that Shin cheated on future Mirae with YK for 6 months.

This drama keep myself wondering about fate. Meeting someone special can be a fate. yet marrying someone is not fate in my opinion. It is our choice.
Since the two leads are MR and Shin, I get a feeling that they will end up together in the end and the point is no matter how much they try to avoid the fate, they just cannnot escape from it. . There is a bad fate as well a good fate,,,, maybe with our careful and thoughtful deed, we might be able to avoid a bad future coming even they are ill fated... I guess this is the point that this drama is heading into. Whether ill or good fate, those fated ones are attracted to each other strongly. I get a feeling MR has a strong attraction to Shin because they are ill fated. But some words that MR is so eager to hear comes from See Joo and for that she needs to evaluate the two men carefully.

My fav part is Oppa stepping up to protect Mirae, too. Also, it seems like everyone reacts the info that future Mirae provides them with, to varying degrees as she dispenses bits and pieces here and there, except for present Mirae. She responds the least to future Mirae, after all she knows herself best. I really like that.

I'm starting to wonder if the the person Shin killed was their child. Not through a direct action, he didn't knife them or anything, but because of the hardship of their daily life and his No Compromise personality the child died.

I wonder, should the title to this drama have been Mi-rae's Fate instead of Mi-rae's Choice.
It's ultimately the same choice despite the characters of Na Mi-Rae and Kim Shin having noticeable changes to their behavior in this timeline.

Yoo-kyung discovering Future Mi-rae's diary reminded me of a conversation I had with my sister. Shouldn't the changes that Future Mi-rae is causing in the present be reflected in the diary? Just a thought.
Also, where in the world is Time Cop?!

Impressions at this point:
1. That producer is a suckup asshole who can only follow trends, and not make them. I hope he gets assigned to cover headhunters in the Amazon.
2. FMR is still very annoying - so many things have changed to make the future totally different, yet she cannot seem to get over her tunnel vision obsession that changing one thing will fix everything. As "Nine" showed, changing the past may not always work out like you planned, even if you fixed something that was bad.

Funny thing is that if she could reveal to Oppa what the terrible thing is that made her tenaciously time travel and force a different future upon her past self, then why can't she make Mirae see the light by revealing it to her as well instead of having Mirae combating her own personal feelings and suffering heartbreaks? The person that deserves to know the most is Mirae, not Oppa nor Se Joo. Yet FMR believes MR should not know because she won't take it too well or won't be able to handle it. But seriously, MR is not a weak person. She was one before FMR came to her life but not after that when she decided to work on achieving her dreams. That's what FMR should understand most of all.

So I was thinking...since Oppa heard about what happened in the future, could it be that he wasn't the one who died? Cause then his reaction would have been all about making sure to protect himself rather than keeping Kim Shin away from Mirae, right?
I also didn't understand one thing. Did Ajhumma Mirae tell Se Joo that she was future Mirae or that she's just someone from the future? I don't think it's the former because then that should have implied to Se Joo that Mirae had gone back in time to pursue him because he was a chaebol, something he really hates. But then if it's the latter, then Se Joo should have been very suspicious of Ajhumma's ulterior motives, especially since she said she's Kim Shin's wife. To him, it would be: why is Kim Shin's future wife actively seeking to matchmake him and Mirae? What does she gain from it?

Lovely little smirk on Se-joo's face at the end of the episode. He's got a bit of a bite to him. But Future Mi-re actually seems more than a bit sad about the hurt Shin is obviously feeling. So now all the leads plus Oppa know at least something about Future Mi-rae's time travel except, of course, for poor, hapless Shin. All he's hearing is that he's going to fail, that his high ethical standards make him essentially un-marriageable and he must renounce the woman he's coming to love for her own good. He's got a lot of work to do.
It's interesting how both Shin and Mi-rae are working on themselves to become better people but Se-joo and Yoo-kyung are essentially engaged in the manipulation of the objects of their affections to get the desired results.
I wonder who died? Shin and Mi-rae's future child? Maybe. It would make sense that Future Mi-rae would be so invested in preventing the union of Shin and Mi-rae if their child has died in the future and it's somehow Shin's fault. As a mother, though, I do have a problem with that. Putting myself in such a position, I think I would choose to have even a few years with either of my sons than to engineer the possibility that they would never be born. It puts the drama into pretty dark and ambiguous territory.
It's interesting that Future Mi-rae says Oppa was against the marriage of Shin and Mi-rae in the old time line. He seemed so gung-ho to get her married off she was even going to accept a man of his choice if the writing gig doesn't pan out.
Great series! Thanks for your recaps and providing a forum for thought-provoking discussion.

wild speculation here
the theory I have about why the time cop is observing rather than apprehending FMR is that the time machine is in beta test mode. the developers of the time machine want to find out all the ways someone might try to cheat the system in their time jumps. Didn't the time cop say something about how FMR is doing it differently this time? They are watching how she behaves, what actions she takes.
For some reason, what FMR is doing is important in the grander scheme. Like someone from the future is wanting FMR to change the time line.
As a time traveler, she seems to be breaking all the rules for her own selfishness. Maybe it is to change the death of her loved one. Maybe it is to fix her regrets in life. It never seems to be about the larger picture of how it will impact others. It is a rather immature attitude, unexpected in someone her age.
I admit I am enjoying the idea that knowing who you will marry can impact your feelings. Mirae seems entirely unaffected by the kind treatment of Sejoo preferring her hero worship of the rough and rigid Shin. Even knowing marrying Shin makes her miserable in no way makes younger Mirae any smarter to avoid that fate.
I would hope should I have the chance to go back to college that I would make wiser choices about the man I fell in love with, married, and later divorced. But I think it is probably true that I'd make the same mistakes again. That seems sad to me. So watching this drama always has me twinged with sadness every time younger Mirae doesn't listen to the wisdom and experience of FMR.

Have anyone ever considered that maybe the future MR is actually future YK? Future MR definitely appears to be more like YK than MR to me. She does not have the scar and she could have known all about MR from that diary.

There's no explanation for how she wouldn't have known how YK and SJ met. There was also that scene during the fire where FMR was remembering whether it was station or bus, and there was the flashback with MR watching the program.
It's plausible that it's someone other than YK, but since there's no other prominent female character, it would be meaning-less to the audience.

I'm seriously happy that Jung Yong-hwa is in this drama instead of seeing him in the other drama that he was earlier casted for (ahem, The Heirs was it?).
I like this drama because it has a tangled web story and plot. The complexity to be hailed!
Too bad the rating is disappointing.

Thanks for the recap gummimochi!! I'm really enjoying this drama, it's good mindless fun and easy to watch. I'm just so relieved that the leads and second leads aren't intolerable (can't say the same for other dramas as of late) and I even find myself sympathising with yoo-kyung. The time traveler police guy was absent this episode, I wonder when he'll actually do some punishing... Not that I'm sadistic or whatever, but he really is taking his sweet time! I'm really gutted that the ratings are so low, this drama deserves more praise! Fingers crossed that things change, though with Empress Ki (which I am enjoying immensely) in the competition it may be a little tough. :/
