Mi-rae’s Choice: Episode 8
by gummimochi
Another strong episode for Mi-rae’s Choice as the women take the lead in this hour, giving the men an important lesson about their stubbornness and pride. Picking up the pieces of a broken heart is never easy, but our workaholic characters don’t let that stand in the way of doing their jobs.
In fact, they’re so dedicated to their careers that I wish I could tell them to stop working just long enough to sort out their feelings properly. They say that time heals all wounds, but I’d bet there’s one ajumma out there who would refute that argument to the end.
The numbers keep falling this week as Episodes 7 and 8 hit 6.5% and 5.4%, respectively.

EPISODE 8 RECAP
Se-joo poses a hypothetical scenario (which we know to be the truth) to Shin: what if he was the head of YBS? Amused by Shin’s answer that he would beg on his knees for forgiveness, he scornfully remarks that this must be Shin’s true nature: to stomp on the weak and cower to the powerful.
Shin suggests that he seek professional help for his delusion, but Se-joo says he’s seen plenty of self-deception among the employees: those who think themselves celebrities when they’re not, others who believe they’ll always receive paychecks. Now he sees that there are times when he must prune the branches away. Se-joo leaves and puts in a call to move up his plans.
Back at the cafe, Yoo-kyung lets out a sigh. While it’s Mi-rae’s choice to accept someone’s feelings or not, she shouldn’t have asked someone else to apologize on her behalf. She hopes that Mi-rae will draw clear boundaries with Se-joo from now on.
Shin is still bothered by Se-joo’s words when he arrives home, where he runs into Ajumma Mi-rae, who just happened to be in the area. She asks how things went tonight, and clucks in disapproval of Mi-rae’s supposed wily womanly ways. When asked why Ajumma speaks so harshly of Mi-rae, she answers, “Because I know her best.”
But Shin sees right past the lies—he believes Mi-rae is too innocent to lie like that yet. Ajumma hangs on the word “yet,” thinking out loud that that means her own track record is spotty.
She tells Shin to believe whatever he likes, but reminds him that people change with time, including Mi-rae. If Shin wants to be happy, then he won’t meet Mi-rae anymore.
It’s an awkward morning commute the next day as Mi-rae gets to the elevator to see Shin already inside. He presses the button to close the door, but she steps right on inside. Hm, I like that she’s not actively avoiding him.
Yoo-kyung comes flying to catch the same elevator moments later, and despite her reluctance, Shin pulls her in with them. Inside, she asks Shin how he knew about last night, to which he says that some girl named Mi-rae invited him as a spectator. Mi-rae scoffs at the schoolyard comeback before getting off.
Realizing that their feud won’t help her cause, Yoo-kyung tries to clarify the situation with Shin, who says he already knew it wasn’t Mi-rae’s fault. That was a bit of petty revenge, he explains. Ha, so childish.
The production crew’s brainstorming session for the pilot quickly snowballs into a shouting match until Writer Bae finally bursts to yell at them why none of their ideas will work. Then she recalls an idea they sidelined ages ago: Pandora’s Box.
She recounts the myth to the team of all the horrible things Pandora discovered inside, save for the last wonderful thing: hope. Building upon that idea to connect with their viewers, they decide to look into feature houses for their premiere.
The team gets to work researching their new concept, interviewing architects, realtors, and construction workers for information. Writer Bae learns that one mansion won an architectural award and it belongs to Chairman Lee.
Which is where Ajumma Mi-rae is staying as she talks with her younger self on the phone. Mi-rae is tired of hearing about the Master Plan, but Ajumma says it’s her who should give it a rest. Little does she know that she’s being watched at that very moment through a hidden camera.
At the mention of Mi-rae, Chairman Lee wonders if Ajumma is talking to herself, only to learn that she’s probably conversing with the maknae writer from the morning team. She’s also told that the younger Mi-rae also happens to be on friendly terms on with her grandson.
So Chairman Lee takes it up with Ajumma to ask if her grandson likes Mi-rae. Then she gets Se-joo on the phone to confirm, driving him into a corner until he admits yes, he does. I’m oddly amused at how refreshingly frank Grandma is about all of this.
All it takes is one glance at Mi-rae’s resume for Chairman Lee to launch into a rant about why her grandson would like an older woman without any esteemed lineage or education. Ajumma Mi-rae agrees, but what was it about her distant niece Mi-rae that caught his eye?
It doesn’t matter to her whether those two young’uns end up together, but she suggests that the chairman at least meet Mi-rae first. Never one to hesitate, Chairman Lee heads out to go see Mi-rae this instant, leaving Ajumma alone on the golf course.
Ajumma hurries back to warn Mi-rae, and sends a panicked text when she doesn’t pick up. But Mi-rae doesn’t see her phone ringing until the very last second at the bus stop, which is when Chairman Lee walks up to her disguised in shades to ask about the bus schedule.
Mi-rae is happy to help, and Chairman Lee gives her the judgmental once-over when she isn’t looking. But before she can ask Mi-rae any pressing questions, Mi-rae helps her board a crowded bus to send her on her way. Ha.
Chairman Lee comes out of the rough and tumble experience pretty unscathed, save for her nerves. Interestingly, she tells Ajumma that she found Mi-rae to be a pleasant girl and will consider whether the two should date.
Ajumma is delighted to hear it, but Yoo-kyung storms towards her a moment later, accusing her of having a deliberate hand in ruining Se-joo’s confession. Ajumma retorts that it should be no concern to Yoo-kyung, but she’s surprised to see that Yoo-kyung does care and asks, “Do you like Se-joo?”
It makes me think that Ajumma thought Yoo-kyung was just a golddigger in her timeline, but she simply answers that Yoo-kyung probably won’t end up with Se-joo. But then again, things might not work out with Shin either, since he doesn’t like shrewd women.
Yoo-kyung is better off dating anybody else, Ajumma tells her, as long as it isn’t Se-joo.
Meanwhile, Mi-rae brainstorms as she eats in a restaurant, whose owner happens to be a former television writer. Her realistic, yet bleak outlook on the broadcasting industry does little to encourage Mi-rae, telling her that the usual cut-off point is around age 40 without a big break, given the high turnover rate and grueling work hours.
At work, Writer Bae is about two seconds away from ripping her hair out when Mi-rae presents her idea to her. She’s intrigued by the haunted house concept, but surprised when Mi-rae asks if she can write the narration for the pilot herself.
Naturally, Oppa is against the idea, citing that Mi-rae doesn’t have enough experience to handle such a large project. Writer Bae acknowledges Mi-rae’s talent however, and adds that the concept was Mi-rae’s idea.
She asks why Oppa feels so uncomfortable working with his sister, offering up mock sympathy for his worries of how exposed and embarrassed he’d feel if she ever made a grave mistake. Fed up with his complaints, Writer Bae offers to send Mi-rae to another team instead, to which Oppa argues that they don’t even pay their writers.
Mi-rae continues to plead with Oppa for the spot that evening. He shrugs her off as usual, and she follows him into a store, promising him that she’ll do a good job, really.
Handing over a winter coat, he quizzes her on where the coldest place in the world is. She answers that it’s filming day, and he tells her that she could freeze to death if they’re stuck in the mountains.
He gruffly tells her that the cost of the coat is coming out of her paycheck, and Mi-rae realizes that this means she’s got the job. She hugs her brother excitedly, and Oppa breaks into a smile. Aw, you two are adorable.
Elsewhere, Shin is surprised to see that Se-joo has spent so much time overseas according to his resume. Then he cross-checks the Young Group family tree with Se-joo’s parents’ names listed on his resume… and they match.
Oppa pulls him aside just then to ask for Shin’s help to give Mi-rae some guidance on the project. Shin is reluctant at first, but he agrees.
So Mi-rae and Shin are briefed about the haunted house they’ll be staying at overnight to confirm any presence of paranormal activity. I love how Shin’s all, “Who’s staying there? Us?” Ha, are you afraid of ghosts?
They’re going for the self-documentary Blair Witch style approach to filming, which means it’ll be just Shin and Mi-rae at the site. Shin asks why a more experienced cameraman can’t join him instead of Mi-rae, to which she defends that she filmed the subway arson incident last time.
He’s told that Mi-rae’s amateur skills will offer more realism, and Mi-rae assures him that she’ll just learn how to handle the bulky camera then. That’s when Se-joo walks past and is assigned to teach Mi-rae the basics. At that, Shin says he’ll teach her himself, but Jokey PD is all, Yeah, right. Heh.
Se-joo masks his hurt about the rejection well enough as he teaches her outside. It’s Mi-rae who broaches the topic first, and they take turns apologizing to each other about the other night.
Recalling Yoo-kyung’s words about not leaving Se-joo any hope, Mi-rae mentions Shin’s name, but Se-joo cuts her off to ask why she likes Shin. Does she like prickly bad boy characters like him? Or did she fall in love with him at first sight?
Mi-rae says that it’s because Shin helped her a great deal when she first started working here. And though he may not believe it, Ajumma Mi-rae told her that Shin is her future husband. Se-joo can only let out an empty laugh at that. He then asks Mi-rae if she’s ever thought about how her feelings for Shin could be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
He turns back to teaching, and when Mi-rae starts to speak again, he cuts her off: “I believe that love comes in different shapes and forms. But an emotion that began because of what someone said… could that really be love?”
The team heads out to interview the townsfolk about the alleged ghost of a woman dressed in a wedding gown who appears at the full moon.
Afterward, Mi-rae returns a borrowed wheelbarrow to a local grandma, but then accidentally falls down a hill, rolling over a small fire, and her shoe catches fire. Eek, you do know Stop, Drop, and Roll, right?
She ends up with some burns and a sprained ankle, and wraps it up before she heads back. Shin immediately notices her limping, but she dismisses it as nothing. Then they say goodbye to the others before setting off to the haunted house.
Shin braces himself for what could be a long night ahead when they arrive. He tells Mi-rae that he’s totally not afraid of ghosts (though his expression suggests otherwise) and Mi-rae grits through the pain, thinking about her narration.
Yoo-kyung marvels at the renovated home, only to be met with troubled faces from the crew. So it seems their show also provides home makeovers for those who can’t afford the renovations. Problem is, their guests are too well-dressed for the occasion, and Se-joo is sent out to talk to them.
But Yoo-kyung stops him, demanding to know what he’ll ask of them. Change into their most shabby-looking clothes and play dumb so that their show has a shot at decent ratings?
Se-joo reminds her that their guests have already decided to put their pride aside in exchange for a revamped home. Dude. And to that, Yoo-kyung calls him a businessman i.e., he only cares about business, not the people.
Despite her disappointment with him, Yoo-kyung decides to film anyway, and keeps her professional demeanor as she genuinely compliments the family for dressing up for the camera. Se-joo looks on, impressed.
Back at the haunted house, Shin and Mi-rae venture inside and they both jump at the slightest noise. Shin points to something in the corner (it’s a camera, snerk) and he plays it off, all, “I was just kidding around. Couldn’t you have played along?” Pffft, okay.
Then he turns around and stops frozen in his tracks. Mi-rae wonders if he’s seen a ghost… and he asks her to move the spider hanging in front of him. Hahaha, how do you expect to make it through the night?
Mi-rae receives a text from Se-joo asking if she’s confirmed her feelings for Shin yet. She answers no, and Se-joo smiles to read that she thinks he might be right. Yoo-kyung finds Se-joo sitting outside and they playfully tease each other, the failed romantic overture now forgotten.
They relocate to a restaurant, and Se-joo tells her that thanks to her, he learned an important lesson between ratings and people today, and that he doesn’t have to forsake one for the other.
Yoo-kyung asks about Mi-rae and brightens to hear that Mi-rae likes Shin instead. She starts to give him the ol’ “there are plenty of fish in the sea” speech when Shin interrupts her to ask if she remembers those claw machines you play to win a toy.
He recalls how one of his classmates won a car keychain through one of those machines once. At the time, he had a fancy remote toy car, and though it wasn’t much, the way the shiny silver sticker sparkled in the sunlight had made him want one of his own.
Yoo-kyung swallows hard before asking if he won one, and Se-joo takes out his keychain, the toy car dangling there. He won’t give up now, Se-joo tells her, and asks for her help. Yoo-kyung slaps on a smile and agrees.
Ajumma Mi-rae swings by the office looking for Oppa, only to find him gone. She picks up one of his calls—it’s Yoo-kyung, and the next thing we know, Ajumma is sending her off in a taxi.
Oh my god, drunken Yoo-kyung is highly amusing as she aegyo-demands to see Se-joo, referring to herself as the toy car. Of course Ajumma doesn’t have the slightest idea what she’s talking about, and Yoo-kyung lets a tear fall from her eyes once she’s alone.
But there are bigger things to worry about than Yoo-kyung, as Ajumma gasps at her graying hair. She quickly hides it when Oppa comes to meet her outside.
Her eyes grow wide to hear that Shin and Mi-rae are off on their own. Overnight. We see a quick flashback to Ajumma’s own past when she was caught in the rain with Shin herself. Neither of them seemed to be too upset about it, and Ajumma Mi-rae gave him a kiss on the cheek. D’aww.
As for our present Shin and Mi-rae, they slowly venture upstairs, but Shin calls cut after another scare. Concerned, he asks if she’s really okay, and sets her down to examine her wrapped ankle, which is bleeding by now.
Mi-rae insists that she’s fine—she can’t afford to give up this project, not at her age. Shin softens at that, but scolds her for lying about how severe her burns were, saying that’s why he can’t trust her.
She repeats that she wasn’t the one who invited him that night. Shin replies that he knows, admitting that he was just angry to see her and Se-joo together.
Se-joo heads home to talk to Grandma, who tells him that she likes Mi-rae well enough. Then he tells her about his plans to out himself as the YBS heir soon.
Oppa asks why Ajumma is so upset to hear that Shin and Mi-rae are alone together—it’s not like anything will happen between them. But Ajumma shouts back that something will happen.
Near tears, she decides to tell him the truth about everything: “I’m Mi-rae,” she reveals. “I’m your dongsaeng, Mi-rae… from the future.”
At the same time, Shin helps Mi-rae up to her feet. There’s a charged moment between them, and Shin slowly leans in…
COMMENTS
Oh, you would end there, wouldn’t you? What a tease. Now I have to wait a week. *grumpity grumpity* Time-travel is a tricky thing to parse when you’re dealing with alternate realities and figuring out what minor events could ripple into major changes and vice versa. It’s enough to give anyone a splitting headache on this end of the wormhole. So instead of trying to juggle the story logic of what moment belongs where on any given timeline (oh god, the migraines are coming again), I’ve found it slightly easier, if you could call it that, to start from the present characters’ reactions to the events and Ajumma’s predictions of the future. Well, her future.
That being said, I like how more things continue to stack up against Ajumma despite her interference to counteract her younger self from walking in her footsteps. I forget if I’d mentioned this before, but I think it’s safe to say that we entered a different reality filled with a plethora of choices and possibilities for our heroine from the moment Mi-rae initially avoided the Fated Accident. Thus as the story develops and Mi-rae asserts herself to carve out her own identity, Ajumma’s argument to stick to the Master Plan continues to chip away. What I find interesting about Ajumma’s interactions with our other characters is that for someone who’s from the future, she remains stuck in her past whereas those around her continue to move forward and look ahead.
Already we’re seeing how present Mi-rae differs from her future self, and this is where I wish on a character level that Ajumma would acknowledge that change. I’d like to think that Ajumma already knows it on a deeper level, and the idea that Mi-rae has perhaps changed for the better while she remains bitter might even scare her. I still can’t imagine what her deal is for telling Oppa the truth, but here’s to hoping that she has a damn good reason for doing so.
Se-joo poses an interesting question this episode about the origin of Mi-rae’s feelings towards Shin: are they of her own volition or influenced by the words of someone else? Although that raises a few other questions, what I want to examine at this point is if it really is a self-fulfilling prophecy or not. Emotion is a complicated concept in of itself, but if something like love can be easily swayed, then we could even entertain the possibility that Ajumma Mi-rae was influenced by her own future advisor to end up with Shin (or not. I don’t know enough about what happened with her back then). I don’t think it can be as clear-cut as that, but it does suggest how much of Mi-rae’s decisions are her own or circumstantial.
We could even go so far to extend that to Yoo-kyung and her developing romantic feelings for Se-joo. I can only speak for myself when I say this, but if someone tells me that I should avoid something or can’t have something, well, the more I’m going to want it because (1) I’m curious and (2) I’m rebellious like that. I’m not entirely sure as to whether that would add to Yoo-kyung’s feelings, which seems separate and solid from Ajumma Mi-rae’s predictions.
Like I said above, the women really take the cake in this hour starting from Writer Bae calling Oppa out on his fear of embarrassment of his sister and that she might see failure, to Yoo-kyung confronting Se-joo about whether ratings mean more to him than people, to Mi-rae facing Shin at work despite his petty revenge. Even Chairman Lee is refreshingly frank, wasting no time to confirm feelings and telling her grandson to spit it out, already. It’s a nice reversal I’ve been enjoying so far in this series, and I can’t wait to see more.
I like that we got the chance to see snippets of Ajumma’s happy relationship with Shin, to which I cry for MOAR. These moments help tie in the two timelines we’re dealing with, and I love how they’re used to illustrate that no matter what Ajumma tries to do, Fate will still get her way to set the stage and let the character’s emotions naturally take its course. Because some things will still happen because they were at the right place at the right time.

I like how the men are portrayed as less than perfect. Although I want a bit more background on FMR and her motivations.

I agree.
And in particular, I find it interesting what they are doing with Se-Joo. I think he's toeing that fine line of seeming like a total good guy/perfect second lead, but he's not really that. I thought the conversation he had with Yoo-Kyung about wanting that claw machine toy was telling. That he uses a metaphor where Mirae is literally a prize, and something that he wants because he saw how happy the other kid was when he won it. Pair this with his idea that Mirae is somehow this pure innocent, and you realize that he doesn't really know her at all, nor is he wanting to know her on a deeper level in their interactions. He's not a bad guy by any means, but he is approaching his feelings for her with blinders on. Compare that to his relationship with Yoo-Kyoung, where they actually have conversations and are getting to know one another. Compare that to Kim Shin and Mirae, who have also gotten to know one another more specifically (and compare that to Kim Shin's "she's not like that...yet," which Ajumma Mirae latches on to). Kim Shin in part likes Mirae for some of her innocence and sort of wide-eyedness, but he's also aware that there is more to her than that, and doesn't hold her up on some pedestal in the same way See-Joo does.

I see appreciation rather than prized novelty on Se Joo's toy car. He really wanted it & worked hard to get it and the fact that he kept it with him all these while shows how treasured it is.
Se Joo saw Mirae in her most vulnerable moments and those feelings of first amused, then curious and eventually affection are genuinely moments of truth in his hearts. To both men and us, viewers Mirae is a little naïve.
Whether he is a VJ or CEO-in-waiting, he speaks like a leader and act like one. He has all these times had frank conversations with YK and continues to do so after she discovered his identity. Don't think there is much intention to get to know but more as friends.
Even though Shin & Mirae are attracted to each other, there's nothing to tell us why Shin likes her except it's natural & she sees that he's not so bad (after being told of all the bads).
Strangely, I wish the show would decide soon whom she's bending towards because I want to see romance already & other stuff about future Mirae. And I would be delighted if Se Joo is the one.

I think I can see it as both things--his metaphor indicates to me that he also is talking about when he is determined to get something, he will, and he will fight for love, and that the hard work is in part what will make it worthwhile. However, I don't think it takes away from the fact that See-Joo is seeing more of the Mirae he wants to see, not the actual Mirae. I think people and characters who are often kind of naive or seen as naive, are then shoehorned into that identity, so when they do begin to change or become more cynical, people can refuse to see that. Also, See-Joo still hasn't revealed the truth to Mirae of his real identity, and I dunno, that's kind of a big deal, and if only as friends, I hope he does tell her soon.
Again, this doesn't make See-Joo a bad guy, but a refusal or a lack of an attempt to really understand her is not a good basis for a relationship, either. In fact, that's possibly what happened when Future Mirae married Kim Shin. They didn't really know each other fully and the warts revealed themselves afterward, with one of them refusing to change and the other changing for the worse.
As for See-Joo's relationship with Yoo-Kyung, I do agree at this point he is seeing her more a friend, but that establishment of friendship and rapport they have now is forming a better basis for a possible future relationship. I'm actually interested to find out what their original relationship timeline is like--we know that in FMR's timeline, they got married, but is it also a happy marriage? And how does FMR even know of See-Joo to the extent that she wants her past self to marry him? Or is she just gold digging?

Perhaps because of the meddling, certain consequences are different now e.g. Oppa may not die of disease, Shin loves Mirae more, Se Joo is heartbroken & becomes difficult for YK. etc, so many possibilities.
Can't wait for the future of them.

This is a REALLY insightful comment, and not something I'd thought of. Honestly, I like Yonghwa so much that I really root for him and want him to be that perfect guy (masochistic, I guess) but you're totally right about him semi-objectifying Mi Rae. I can almost write off him being a douchey chaebol with Shin and in other situations as long as he's good to Mi Rae, but your perspective on the toy car thing made me realize he's doing it to her too.
It's so hard to separate out one's feelings for the actor sometimes and focus on what they're actually doing with the character. Thanks!

Thanks for the recap! The ratings seriously make my heart ache, because this is such a great show. The last episode felt a bit off kilter, but I think it's because we glimpsed more of the .... darker? less sweet? sides of the characters. We'd already seen Sejoo's business mind and how cutting Shin could be when he wanted to be, but they hadn't had much reason to be like that around Mirae until more problems with work arose. Now with this episode, I'm happy to say I'm liking how our characterisations are forming - everybody's their own person with their strengths and weaknesses.
I'm loving Yookyung. As if we haven't all been there: the sidelined best friend, the one who has to swallow her own feelings and plaster a smile on her face as she helps him grab the attention of someone else. Her heart reaches out to him in his sadness and can't help but help him because she wants him to be happy - and yet, she'd prefer it if he was forced to give up asap. Her turns from empathetic to petty are realistic and that drunk aegyo scene cracked me up. Sejoo's feelings are already going to be tilted towards her side before he realises he doesn't actually like Mirae.
And the main pairing is adorable. They bounce off each other so well.

My problem with Yoo Kyung is that even though she has some aspects that viewers can sympathise with at this point (i.e. sidelined friend, forced to be supportive towards a guy she likes, etc), she is also manipulative and has a tendency to lie to get what she wants (or even pettily, at the start of the show, when she was telling Shin about the rumours about them and Mi Rae's supposed reaction). I've known manipulative people like that in real life and it's not cool. I would like her more if she could use her perceptive talent more honestly (i.e. during the interview of the family), even if it doesn't give her personal gain.

While I am not Yoo-kyung's biggest fan, drunken Yoo-kyung was adorable and then sad, literally. I felt for her in that moment, though I still don't enjoy her meddling antics.
I had a little LOL moment when Miranda was ushered (forced?) onto the bus, how kind of Mirae to cover her fare as well teehee
And yes, I thoroughly enjoyed the girl power moments =)

@Alice. I am sorry I didn't see the girl power in Mi-Rae. I thought the best way this show can recover from the dreadful Episode 7 was that Mr-Rae takes a break from the romances and just improve herself. She has both men madly in love with her so there is no need to rush into things. I thought, if the writers complies to my wishes, is to have Mi-Rae tell Shin that she needs some room and to just become a good writer. That last scene of her nearly giving up for a kiss really bothered me. I am hoping that YEH would do what she did in "Lie To Me" that she is not ready for that and she wants to go slower. Oh well, I have to wait a week now to see if my wish comes true. Go Mirae, you have both men on your heels, take your freakin' time, please! This is from a guy's point of view.

@docster6 ty for your response. i should have made myself clearer, i was referring to the idea of women taking reign in the workplace: writer Bae's outburst & Yoo-kyung sticking to her guns.
From a girl's perspective I too hope that Mirae takes a step back in her journey of lurve so as to instead move forward with her work. While I am interested in how the love triangle/square will evolve throughout the series, as someone who can relate to Mirae's character (slightly), I'm also quite interested in how she'll overcome the limitations others pose on her in the workplace.
Whatever the case I'm still looking forward to the next ep =)

I don't know why you can't see Mi Rae power. I think it is obvious enough she didn't stick with all the love thingy and find her foot enough to say she want to debut and achieve her dream, work hard and brave enough to do the filming with her burned feet. That show more than anything.

I apologize about my comments then. I love Mirae more than the guys in this show and that is why I was upset that Kim Shin was leaning in for a kiss at the end. I hope she does not give in....but from the looks of it she was starting to close her eyes. I saw enough YEH kisses in her previous series to know that it will confirm Future Mirae's concern that they are alone in the mountains. Being a guy, I have always supported the women. I raised 8 kids and I have changed more diapers than the average American woman. Kim Shin has some sewing skills and he seems to be a well-rounded guy, but his temper bothers me a lot. Yes, okay, I see the women's power in the show, but I want more. My wife is a medical doctor and I supported her through medical school as a good house husband.

Strong departure from how the women were portrayed in the last episode, and I love it. Still holding on to Se-Joo and Mi-Rae, though. He does raise a valid point saying that her attraction to Shin might have something to do with FMR telling her to stay clear of him. One might point out that fate will always triumph and that we can't change it, but given different circumstances, i think we can. They prevented deaths from the train station arson, remember?
I also love that i'm seeing some kind of a different breed of second lead from Se-Joo who looks like he will fight for the girl this time and not just watch along the sidelines as the she rides off to sunset with another man.
PS
I'm not exactly sure why, but until i see a scar on FMR shoulder that's identical to MR, I'm not entirely sold on the two of them being one and the same. The older one is just too different from the present one. And the level of aegyo that pours out of her is more Yoo-Kyung really than Mi-Rae.

This ep made me stop caring for Se-Joo side when its about Mirae. Sure its good that he isnt giving up but he has become cliche second lead meddler that doesnt give up, will use tricks to get what he wants.
Acting like Mirae is his girl, trying to talk bad about Shin to Mirae. Sure he had point about Mirae knowing Shin becoming her future husband thing but nothing else.
He is also about to his rich power against Shin like it will change the fact Shin and Mirae might end up with each other. Talking to his grandmother like Mirae is his girlfriend.
Comparing Mirae to a toy he couldnt get as rich kid was insulting, very lame. I hope he becomes better than this and not cliche second lead he is becoming now.

Agree, didn't particularly like the analogy that Sejoo drew between Mirae and the toy car! She's not a toy or a "thing" that you can win, no matter how much you treasure it. His arrogance was rather disturbing to me. Maybe marrying the foul-tempered Kim Shin is not that bad after all...
Shin sees her more truly, and meets her as the person she is. He straight away acknowledges that he believes her, and also that he was jealous (squee!)

I beg to disagree. I actually think, Sejoo is far from being a cliche second. He's neither the perfect, the bystander, or the manipulative second lead. Those 3 are the usual cliche second leads we often see in K-dramas, and Sejoo, so far, is none of them.
I don't think you can call what he's doing at the moment "meddling" when Kim Shin and Mirae aren't even together yet and worse both aren't even sure of their feelings for each other. By Mirae, expressing her doubt towards what she feels for Kim Shin, it just but natural for Seju to hope. And with Kim Shin badmouthing Mirae, in front of Seju, more so that he would be wanting to fight for her. He obviously cares for Mirae, regardless of his hidden identity. Why would give up something you badly want for an opponent that is unworthy in your eyes. Besides, I haven't seen him use dirty tricks to manipulate Mirae or anyone. Up until now, he's fighting fair and square for the woman's affection.
Acting like Mirae is his girl? When? When he he defended her from insults from his friends and Kim Shin? I wouldn't take that against him. In fact, that's very commendable of him despite being rejected and humiliated. In fact, I think it was Kim Shin who acted like "Mirae is his girl" the way he acted up during the proposal and even going as far as confronting Seju about it. What's it to him if a VJ likes the same girl? He's not dating Mirae yet.
Also, he has not in any way used his power against Kim Shin. He posed that hypothetical question about their status being reversed , because Kim Shin was obviously looking down on him as a VJ, and worse even questioning why a guy like him would like a girl like Mirae. Wasn't Kim Shin the one using his seniority as an announcer here, thinking he was just confronting a lowly VJ.
He didn't exactly compare Mirae to a toy, in a negative way. I don't understand why you'd think of it as lame. In my personal opinion, it was a good insight into his personality. He had the best toy car, but when he saw that simple mini-car key chain with a sticker, he badly wanted it and since he couldn't just buy it anywhere, and can only get it through those machines, he persevered to get it. That happened when he was when in 4th grade, and now he's 28 yet he still has that keychain with him. It means he treasured it, no matter how simple and unextraordinary it was.

No im not saying he has become meddling second lead yet but this ep showed too much potential for that.
I dont want them to go there with Se-Joo. I want him to fight fairly for the girl before she makes her choice clearly. Then give up and dont use company power to ruin the life of Shin in petty revenge.
He should have respected Mirae words too and not stop her from talking when she is saying things he dont like. He did meddle little in asking why she likes a cliche bad boy like Kim Shin, like he knows all about Shin. He cant fight for Mirae without trying convince her she has no feelings for Shin.
Im worriying beforehand and hoping they dont ruin Se-Joo as second lead. Make him flawed, have sides i dont like without going overboard.

Just like what you said in your comment below about not "overdoing the Mirae and Kim Shin fight" since they are new and young couple (which they are not (yet)). I think you have to do the same in judging Sejoo's character. You're attributing things to him that he hasn't shown or done, at least in my perspective and base your judgment on how you do not want the story to go.
You said "He cant fight for Mirae without trying convince her she has no feelings for Shin." - so what's he supposed to do then? There's no way Mirae would have feelings for him unless she has no feelings for Kim Shin.
I think it's actually good that he posed this question to Mirae, so that Mirae can actually figure out what she really feels because at this point she's obviously confused of her own feelings. It's about time for her to confront her own feelings. And when that happens, maybe her and Kim Shin can finally deal with each other.

My bad misspelled, i meant
"He CAN fight for Mirae without trying convince her she has no feelings for Shin.”
I meant trying to make her doubt herself was too much self serving by him.
Present Mirae is the problem right now in the romance story. She should be clear about her feelings and show that. She is being written too timid in the romance story just to prolong the series before the OTP get together.
Future Mirae, the future mystery not being being shown at all is slowing down the rest of the story too much right now specially in the last two eps.

I agree with your comments on Sejoo. He was not using his status to put Khim Shin down, in fact it was Shin who was using his seniority to put Sejoo down....
I also agree on your comments on what the keychain meant for Sejoo... that he will persevere to get what he wants i.e. he is not the type to give up easily. This was his answer to Se Kyung when she told him to give up on Mirae.
However, I am not in favor of the 2nd leads pairing as I am shipping Sejoo with Mirae. I do not like the way SK tried to manipulate the situation to her advantage especially when Sejoo has confided his feelings for Mirae to her. Pretending to help is not helping at all...,,its's betraying Sejoo's trust in her.

I totally agree with you! I don't know why people see seju in the wrong light in both the scenes. Maybe they didn't watch that scene with kim shin properly or they just really love kim shin to admit he was wrong n seju's behavior was quite understandable. He didn't use his 'power' as some say, kim shin was the one using his position! N seju wouldn't have talked back to him like that if he hadn't bad mouthed mirae. People really need to watch that scene again without any prejudice. About that car toy scene, the writer tried to show his good side i.e. he is really hard working. If he was mean or spoiled, he could have stolen that car keychain from the kid or bullied him or offered him money to buy it but he didn't! He obtained it through his own hard work. He was making yoo kyung understand that he did not give up even when he was just a kid and he wouldn't give up now. If he is still the person he was back then...then i don't think he will try to win mirae unfairly. I'm not saying seju is an angel but he isn't that bad either like some people here are saying. I like him n yoo kyung more than the main otp because I can understand their actions n words more. This is my first time watching jung yong hwa n han chae ah. I have seen eunhye in many dramas n this is my least fav role so far. I loved lee dong gun in sweet 18 but his character here is getting on my nerves!

Yeah, I agree that Seju is in danger of falling into the 'hateful sore-loser 2nd lead'.
That likening Mirae to a toy he can't have, feels like a hint from the writer that it's not exactly love that he feels for her. Ironic since Seju told Mirae to reexamine her feelings for Kimshin, lol.
I hope rather than being flat-out rejected in the end, he'll realize this on his own.

It's not actually a toy he can't have but rather a simple and unextraordinary toy that he had to work hard for to get :) I guess I'm the only one who actually like this scene and doesn't particularly find it offensive to Mirae. It just showed an insight to his personality, at least to me.
But for those already eager to start the flame between Kim Shin and Mirae, I understand that having Seju around can be frustrating. But to be honest, we just need Kim Shin and Mirae to be sure of their own feelings, at this point, I don't even think Sejoo is a roadblock to their getting together. The problem lies within their ownselves.
I am actually particularly interested to see how Seju and Yukyung's love will blossom so the sooner Sejoo can get over Mirae, the better for me. I see so much potential in the second lead pairing. The camera loves both of them!

I completely agree. I'm actually a Shin/Mirae supporter, but I thought the toy car story Seju told Yu-kyung provided great insight into his personality and character. Like you said, he treasured that car, and kept it with him all that time . . . it wasn't a slight to Mirae, or some possessive fit. He was just proving he's the type of person who perseveres and works hard and never gives up.
If he'd bullied the kid to give him his prize, or bought an exact replica because he was jealous of the boy, I wouldn't have respected him at all and would've understood the criticism. But knowing he kept the car and was proud of his accomplishment makes me think he'd treasure Mirae just as much if he ever managed to win her heart.
And seriously, that's what we need in a love triangle . . . if there's no competition, then where's the fun in watching an OTP get together? I don't want things to be too easy for them, especially if Seju and Yu-kyung are fated to marry in the end anyway. Right now, I'm loving all the characters - they're all way more complex than we give them credit for, and I look forward to seeing what they do next!

I'm like you!
I also understood from his analogy that he had to work hard to get something and his hard work payed off. That's also why Yookyung wanted to be that toy because she wanted to feel like she is that extraordinary and special to Se Joo.
And yes, I can't wait either for those two to end up together! I changed ships from the moment she started showing some depth. This episode helped to show why they end up together. She brings out the best in him and is not afraid to call him out on his bulls**t and stop him from becoming a cold-hearted businessman like his grandma.

Oh don't worry, my post was not some silly 'OTP-shipping-warrior' or whatever it's called that makes one prejudiced against an opposing character. I enjoy all 'couple scenes' with the 4 actors because they have good chemistry together.
I see your point about the toy story highlighting Seju's good side, but unfortunately I also feel uneasy about the toy being associated with his desire for Mirae.
It could have been anything else, but why a "toy" and him as a child, of all things?

I perceived Se-joo's story about the toy car the same way you did. The toy car represented something he saw and tried numerous times through sheer effort to work hard to obtain for himself without resorting to taking it from someone else, buying it, or replicating it. He described it as "sunlight" and still treasures it to this day.
If anything, it is a daily reminder to seek out and not miss the beauty in simple things among his luxurious surroundings and wealth.

Will Kim Shin ever learn to apologize for his mistakes? He never apologized to Mirae for throwing water on her face when they barely knew each other due to a misunderstanding. It’s like history repeats itself in this episode, it’s like insults were never thrown at her in Episode 8. I badly wanted Mirae to once and for all teach Kim Shin a lesson and make him beg for forgiveness. Will Mirae always pretend as if nothing happened? Will Kim Shin ever realize that his temper and trust issues always ends up with people getting hurt? That he should at least learn to listen? I cannot believe that instead of redeeming himself and apologizing to Mirae he pretended that he still thinks it was Mirae who invited him as a form of revenge. PETTY it sure was but sadly the hurtful words he said to Mirae in Episode 7 was from being petty that I can get past this childish act. I don’t think I can root for a couple like that.

As the great philosopher Vanilla Ice once said, "Word to your mother!" I enjoyed Shin at first -he seemed like a man of principle, and his concern for his employees made him likeable. I thought he and Mirae were very cute together initially. But he's really starting to grate. The yelling at her in episode 7, and now we find out he did that when he KNEW Mirae hadn't invited him? That's just petty and nasty. And that lecturing her about how she's too stupid to be a broadcaster because of her foot injury? I get that it's out of concern, but here's a clue, drama: It is NOT cute when men speak to women like that. It's offensive.
He really needs to start showing some humility and capacity to change to sell the inevitable Mirae-Shin romance. I think I wouldn't be bothered as much by him if the show hadn't tried to be feminist in the beginning episodes.

He knew afterwards he was tricked and it wasnt Mirae and was childish in letting her think it was her fault.
But be clear Shin was arrogant in their fight but he didnt know Mirae hadnt invited him then. Blame Shin for not saying he was sorry but not for being angry when he thought Mirae played him.

I do still blame him for getting angry with her and specially not letting her explain. I like Shin but i was troubled with that scene because we saw despite all his good, caring sides he has that big flaw of short temper, cold logic to hurt with words.
I agree fully he shouldnt have been that angry and should know better.
On character level though its good that he has a big human flaw like this. He was showing too many good sides like caring, helping Mire, his strong principles, not being afraid of talking bad to his boss when she is wrong.

This is one of my issues with Kim Shin too. A lot of people are claiming that the advantage of Mirae and Shin is that they actually know each other but if that's the case how on earth in one snap, Kim Shin's trust and temper issues clouds his judgment and totally forgets the kind of woman Mirae is. It's like their back to square one, that he knows nothing about her for him to insult her like that. Worse, he didn't just do it to Mirae's face but he even had the nerve to insult him in front of Sejoo. I don't get that. And when finally enlightened, instead of apologising, he thought of using it for revenge. Revenge for what? Mirae has not wronged her for her to deserve his revenge.

They know each other pretty well but they have still met just recently. They dont know all the ugly sides to their personality. I dont like either Mirae timid ways with the guys and string both along cowardly.
Also lets not overdo this first fight like they are back to square one. They are not even a couple yet.
In real world love ones fight terribly at times and forgive each other later if they havent gone over the line. Shin and Mirae future will depend on if they fought all the time in the other future.
One fight dont make Shin a terrible person. We have all bad talked someone we love in the heat of a fight, emotions.

He didn't even had to ask for forgiveness, they were back to good just like that. I just hope the writers don't make this a cycle between themn and for once give us a confrontation ending up in a resolution instead of Mirae just acting like nothing happened.

@addictedtoyou I felt the same. I liked the angst in ep 7 because it showed how flawed Shin is, well, the entire show is very good at this. All main characters are very real and have qualities and problems and are complex people.
Having said that I am having some trouble with Mirae's reaction to Shin sometimes violent behavior. I didn't like it when he threw water in her face and she was rather calm about it. I mean, I like the scene itself because it is consistent with his attitude but her way of dealing with it was a bit strange. I brushed it off thinking she would be scared to throw something or slap a fellow worker and sunbae and after sort of blackmailing him.
It's different now though, they are in a much more familiar territory, the romance implication was very much a part of the fight. I would understand if she was just ignoring him in order to debut and focus on her career but I don't understand being friendly or much less allowing a kiss. I was very surprised gummimochi didn't comment on this.

Sure, he accepted he was mad in this episode but he never said I'm sorry for the hurtful things he said. I just want her to reject his kiss, and actually tell him she was hurt by his words. I think he is still too self-centered to actually think of what the other person feels. Hopefully he will apologize next week but I still want Mi Rae to just be like "screw these guys, Imma do me" and focus on herself. I think what Future Mi Rae should focus on changing is not who her younger self marries but her younger's self attitude towards standing up to herself and being an independent, capable woman who can stand up to others when she feels that what they're doing is wrong.

But after spending so much time together and knowing each other's qualities n flaws, I can't ignore his mistake this time! Okay, it was a misunderstanding at first but after he realized that mirae was innocent, he still acted mad instead of apologizing to her...really?! He really needs to work on his temperment! I'm not surprised that f.mirae turned out the way she did. If p.mirae wants their marriage to work out this time then she should make him realize that he is being an ass. Yes, Yoo-kyung showing him how it should be done! Kudos to her!
If nothing else, the fact that she knows Sejoo's true identity but she's talking back and challenging him should show him that she's dealing with him genuinely as a person, not as a bank account.
But I feel sorry for her, since she has no way of proving that she liked him even before she knew who he was.

Mirae told Seju that Yoo-kyung not only wanted to date him, but that she would "have him". It doesn't get much clearer than that. It wasn't said in passing either. Mirae brought up the subject to gauge how Seju felt about Yoo-kyung. He said Yoo-kyung wasn't his style. Meanwhile, Yoo-kyung pays for Seju's expensive drinks and told him to be more frugal AFTER he was made aware of her interest in him. So not only did she express her interest when she thought his position and income level was lower than hers, but she further proves it by picking up his bar tab. All Seju has to do is jog his memory to find all the proof he needs concerning Yoo-kyung's feelings for him. And of course catch a glimpse of her dripping wet.

It's actually pretty impressive that the characters are already so grounded in their lovelines that they really can't see any deviation from their "fated" partners. (Nor can I.)
For example, when FMR told YK that she'll marry Shin, YK's expression was completely unconvinced - she clearly didn't even consider him a serious contender. Mirae also refused to get off the Kim Shin ship, even though she felt sorry to Sejoo (and even though her confession about Kim Shin being her destined husband made her sound like the worst kind of flaky desperate woman who believes anything the fortuneteller says!)
I'm glad she was more focused on her career than romance this episode. And Writer Bae rocks!

I rather liked the opening scene with Se-Joo and Shin. First, it’s nice to see that perfect Se-Joo is human, too, just like the rest of us! Second, as likeable as Se-Joo was, previously I had a hard time buying him as a chaebol, someone who was raised in wealth and privilege. I saw it in this scene! JYH really sold it.
I wish Ajumma Mirae would do more to change the future than just keep telling Shin and Mirae to stay away from each other. Did telling people who are falling in love to keep away *ever* in the history of love accomplish anything other than increasing ardor? And it would be more entertaining if we saw her engage in some villainous but smart plans. Entertain us! Enough of this weaksauce stuff.
I don’t get Shin at all. So he *knew* Mirae wasn’t at fault, but he decided to be nasty to her anyway? What the . . . wow. That’s very endearing. Not. I liked these two for a while, but the appeal is fading.
I did LOL at Miranda being maneuvered onto the bus. That must have been something. On Monday I took the subway for the first time in years. I’m no chaebol, but it was culture shock for even me!
I was glad to see present Mirae become involved in work more, not just with the guy drama. Of course they had to balance it out by having her become injured so Shin can scold her.
I have to partially disagree with the recapper that this episode showcased the women coming into their own. Ajumma Mirae continues to do nothing but tell people who aren’t listening to stay away from each other. Present Mirae *is* making strides at the station, but it irks me to no end that she has to beg her brother for permission to work, and seems to need Se-Joo and Shin to help her professionally. I enjoyed Yoo-Kyung standing up to Se-Joo professionally, although of course she had to get drunk and cry over him later. Chairman Lee was boss, as usual.
My favorite line from the recap: “Mi-rae is tired of hearing about the Master Plan.”
Word. Aren’t we all, at this point?

The sad thing is that there is an expiration date for women in broadcasting as there is for handsome anchormen. That lady in the restaurant was good antidote for Mirae, and for us. Even if Mirae keeps to the career track, she may not be in broadcasting for a while unless Miranda changes the culture of broadcasting. Even if Mirae moves to another station, she only has 8 more years of being a news writer unless she becomes a funny ahjumma on some variety show.

I am getting a bit tired of FMR and her meddling. Everything she tries fails or makes things worse, and she still seems unable to learn anything from her many mistakes because of her fixation on "The Master Plan". For me she is the most unlikable character.
I suspect that is one reason why the ratings have not gotten better, aside from Yoo Kyung, I see little character development so far, halfway into the show.

Thanks for the recap!
I have to say, I found ep 8 boring: It's supposed to be the stronger one of the week and I FFed almost all the time since we had no highlight. Also, the cliffhanger kiss: *headesk*.
I will watch till the end the same way cause I'm curious like that but really... Compare with Empress Ki wich constantly keeps you on the edge or makes you swoon or laugh: For once I find the ratings logical.

I enjoyed the ep when its about Mirae, Yoo Kyeung doing something on their own. I like the put down Yoo Kyeung gave to Se-Joo with the family in the house scene. She was wonderful there.
The series weakness so far is FMR is getting all she wants too often. She decides too much over the characters life, choices. She is the only conflict the series has for the four lead characters and its becoming predictable. I rather see Mirae has her own choice which of the guys is more interesting to her. Now being a puppet to Future Mirae.
I like that Shin has flaws and Se-Joo is becoming arrogant chaboel he is and thinks actually about becoming Shin boss just because he lost the girl to Shin. That is understandable flaw but i hope he stops before becoming cliche second lead meddler, villain like Future Mirae for the OTP.
That would ruin the freshness of this series.

I think you have to rewatch this episode because Sejoo did not decide to comeback as YBS boss sooner than as planned just because he lost Mirae to Shin.
First of all, Mirae has not chosen Kim Shin although it's obvious that she has strong feelings for him. But as revealed by her conversation with Sejoo, she herself in uncertain about her feelings for him.
Second, the whole confrontation between Sejoo and Kim Shin triggered the decision, and it's not entirely about Mirae. There was poweplay involved and Kim Shin initiated it. How? 1) By confronting Seju about proposing to Mirae; 2) By questioning why would he like someone like Mirae; 3) By insulting Mirae infront of him and when Seju called him out for doing so he used the "I'm your workplace sunbae" card. Does being a sunbae in the workplace gives him a right to insult a woman who his junior likes? and 4) By calling Seju delusional when he said a valid point that he seems to "cower to the powerful but bullies the weak". Sejoo may have been arrogant in this scene but at least I can see where it is coming from and to be honest I'd be very pissed to if a senior insults the man I like in my face. Sejoo is just lucky that he can confront Shin like this because he has nothing to lose and I'm actually glad he did, Kim Shin overstepped his bounds.

I think you and Mohammed are both right, and what you're saying doesn't contradict each other. Shin was definitely initiating a power play, and he was out of line using his position to try and bully Se-Joo. His response to Se-Joo's calling him out on bullying the weak, cowering to the powerful also shows a distinct lack of self-awareness.
However, it seems to me that we're definitely meant to see Se-Joo's decision to come clean to be at least partially in response to Shin. It's not entirely about Mirae, but she's a factor. Basically, it was a typical guy pissing contest. Shin showed his, now Se-Joo gets to show what he's got :). It just happens to be a delicious twist that he has an ace in the hole that will trump Shin big-time (at least professionally).

But the whole confrontation between Sejoo and Kim Shin was because he was angry that he felt he lost Mirae to Shin and Shin angry because Mirae was with Sejoo. Mirae hasnt choosen yet but its clear who she ran after.
Sejoo would never dare to talk back to a sunbae in this korean work culture if he wasnt backed up knowing he has higher position as the future boss.
Sure Shin is arrogant sunbae because he is the star but everyone else has to follow the rules and respect the older senior in the work places.
Sejoo is too arrogant thinking he cant deal with being fake VJ anymore because Shin is his romantic rival. Its understandable he isnt used too being talked down to since his background is he will own the world around him.
Lets not make Sejoo a shining knight defending a woman from a bad word a jealous almost boyfriend called her. He was fuelled by rejection and his rival being future employee is a way to hurt him back atleast with this talk.
Im not saying Sejoo will target Shin when he becomes YBS but he is currenly going back to his heir position because Shin and Mirae he know he cant stop from becoming a couple.
Faye is correct it was typical guy pissing contest and i hope it ends there. Not the chabeol becomes villain like using his power to go after Shin in his worklife.

I have never claimed Sejoo to be a knight in shining armor, he has his own flaws, but what he did was commendable. Despite the rejection and humiliation, he defended Mirae. I don't think that act becomes any less commendable just because he actually has the hidden power to talk back to Kim Shin. Mirae did not deserve the insult so good for him to call out Kim Shin for doing so. It doesn't matter if Kim Shin is the "almost-boyfriend" as you claim him to be or that Seju was the rejected "suitor", the point is Kim Shin had no business in confronting Sejoo about him liking Mirae because that is a matter outside of their work and more importantly, he had no right to insult or badmouth Mirae in front of Seju and use the seniority card after.
I would have been pissed at Sejoo if he used his "hidden identity as a chaebol" against Kim Shin for no reason at all, just to show arrogance. But he did have a valid reason.
Him going back to his heir position to stop Shin and Mirae from being a couple? I think it's too early to tell. Let's see how the upcoming episode goes. I don't like pre-judging the actions of the characters based on events that has not yet happened so I'll reserve my judgment on that.
The sooner he's out as chaebol, the better I think. Who knows that by doing so, would actually help Kim Shin and Mirae get together. Time for Seju to also realise, that the innocent and pure Mirae he has pictured all along is just an ideal.

I commend him for defending Mirae and Shin was being jerk just like Sejoo was. I can get past their pissing constest and i really didnt like Shin power play of using his work, fame as power tool.
We seem to agree more in this scene.
I couldn agree more in your last paragraph, the sooner he is out as a chaebol the better. I dont like how mistaken Sejoo is about the pure and innocent Mirae he has pictured either.
I would feel sad for him if he thought coming out as chaebol would give him better chance with her.

Perfectly said. Although i will add that although Se Joo doesn't know Mirae as well as he thinks he does...and was a bit shocked at her unladylike shouting at the kids...at this point he will like her no matter what he turns out to be.
He has accepted the fact that his friends don't think she's pretty and her hair is a mess. So he's already in love.
My one nit is that these are his close friends from film school and he STILL hasn't told them who/what he is. When was he ever gonna tell them? Were they gonna out him at his work if he told them? It bothers me that the only thing prompting him to out himself is his A) love for Mi Rae and B) his need to get the broadcast station in line.
For some reason, his comment to his friend (although his friend deserved to be snapped at) reminded me of Prince Hal and Falstaff. He's their friend and even though he hangs with them he's been judging them. He still doesn't see them as worthy friends, and it's like he feels he's slummy. He's got some classy morals there but also some high class morals. Why couldn't he just tell his friends who he was?

@Mohammed - Nice post! I agree with almost everything you said. Mirae and Yoo Kyung were the best at work. I also really enjoyed Yoo-Kyung in the scene where she stood up for the people at the house. And it was interesting to see another side of the up-until-now perfect Se-Joo; hopefully, as you said, they won't take it too far.
I do have to disagree that Future Mirae is getting all she wants. I'm curious to know how you see that. Despite the little changes she's made, the essence of what she wants to avoid - for Shin and Mirae and Se-Joo and Yoo-Kyung to come together- still seems to be happening.

Future Mirae isnt getting all she wants in the end. But she is the sole conflict in the series. She makes trouble for every character and gets the way in their life and important choices in every ep. She almost broke Shin and Mirae up because of that fight just when they were about to start dating.
Fate stops her in afterhand by making new situations for Shin,Mirae and co.
But its becoming very predictable that Future Mirae is too much makjang and creating every conflict. Now she will use Oppa to chase Shin away from Mirae.
The show needs better writing of its conflicts. Tell us what the hell happened in the future alittle. Its too slow as rom com and as mystery SF story right now because of Future Mirae.

This is where i fear the effect of the audience on the writer and the late shoots. I think the writer may have chosen the wrong genre. Rom-com is a bit too slight. A romantic drama would allow all sorts of freedom to the character. But there is such tragedy in the eyes of Future Mirae that....the writer has to tip-toe around it in order to keep the rom-comedy going. And I sense that fear of cutting loose.

@Carole - Well said. I think this show has all the ingredients to be awesome, but they're afraid to go all the way, so they're just treading water at this point. I really thought it was going to be so much more than it is.
As a viewer, I don't mind shows that are light on plot at times. But the characters just aren't compelling enough to me to watch them do the same thing over and over, which is what it felt like this week. I think I'll give it another episode, and then decide whether to cut bait or not. I don't want to be the poster who just rains on everyone's parade by talking all the time about how much I dislike something.

Agreed - FMR's only purpose here seems to be to create situations that fail. We need something more than just a single catalyst to move things forward. FMR seems totally incapable of learning or adjusting to the new situation, and has gotten to the point like where in video games there is some random event that causes chaos for no good reason.

For me the series weakness is it doesn't follow through on some elements and it doesn't seem to know what to do with the magic or time travel element. Now that Mirae is back, all she has to do is nag and maybe give prophecies/advice/threats to everyone else.
We have Mirae who is supposed to be aging and also getting sick. But not consistently. We have dreams and the dictionary magical realism. But not consistently. We have time-cop walking around being a plot-tease but not really doing anything.
When a drama seems to be picking and choosing its rules or seems to be repeating itself (Ahjumma warning, no one listening; Ahjuma warning, no one listening) then one can't commit to the plot in a big way.
All that said, i still like it. I just don't trust it.

Stop keeping back the truth of what happened in the future.
There needs to be consistent writing for the rules of the magic, time travel, Future Mirae so we can keep enjoying the rom-com part of the series.

Have to admit, I didn't really get Mirae's desperation to debut as a writer. I know it's crucial and that she's already at a disadvantage age-wise, but hey - she's not 40 yet, and why would you ignore a 3rd-degree burn for that long?! Hasn't she got enough scars?!
At this rate, we'll end up with one of those scenes where she has to get carted off to hospital ... not exactly the "strong woman" scenario she was aiming for.

Its easy to understand her desperation to debut as a writer. She saw her potential failed writer future in that waitress. She was told clearly she is done when she is 40 if she doesnt have a big break, becomes a famous writer in broadcast or production company.
She have to debut now so her chances of making it past 40 as a famous writer can happen. She has to debut now so she has several years left to try to make it big in this career.

There are no older women in the writing staff that I can see though. So it'd be a whole new world for any woman to make it past forty at YBS.
Miranda has her continual desire to cut down the staff to "there will be only one." Unless the entire group does well, there may not be room for more than one writer. And it takes a lot to convince Miranda. If push came to shove, would Mirae have the guts, talent, and cut-throat viciousness to go up against Writer Bae?

This writing staff is for low level show and that is the bottom of the pole in the broadcast company. They have a young writer in Bae because its not the news program, famous program. They write for morning show. We have to remember Shin came down to their level from news anchor.
There must be older, more known respected author in the programs that have higher rating, more journalism rep like that news programs.
Im sure Bae who is leader position as a young writer plan to go better shows when she becomes older, more known.

I like how flawed the characters are in this show. On these recaps and on the Soompi boards, I have seen some people complain about how they don't like how this or that character is behaving, except to say that they don't approve of how they are behaving. My rejoinder to this would be that if the characters didn't make mistakes or do things wrong, then this would be an incredibly boring drama. I like the warts-and-all approach we are seeing, and the nuances are a lot more complex than in other dramas where usually it is Candy who suffers from noble idiocy and is super poor, or cold-hearted Chaebol who is gruff but has heart of gold, or, meddling, bitchy female second lead, and pining perfect second male lead.
Yes, Kim Shin is arrogant and prone to temper, but if he learns and grows, and apologizes for his mistakes, then that works for me. He flipped out on Mirae after the party, but at that moment he was under the impression that she had invited him to rub this in his face. He misunderstood and was angry. Was he right to yell at her and not listen to her? No, but is it in character and works to move the plot and character grown along? Yes.
Yes, Mirae is being a little wishy washy about the boys, but she's been told information by FMR that is confusing her. One guy, who was not supposed to like her in her future timeline, fell in love with her because he met her when he should have met Yoo-Kyung. The other guy she is deeply drawn to, but has been told will ruin her life and his. All the while, she is trying to figure out life for herself on her own terms.
Yes, Yoo-Kyung is a little heavy on the aeygo sometimes and in moments of weakness will give in to the sexism at work and exploit herself because it seems like the only way to get ahead. She likes a guy who likes someone else, and while she helped conspired to get Mirae to the party for See-Joo's confession, she did risk the chance of Mirae accepting him, too. She's in love with a guy who is in love with someone else, but she's not being like actively horrible and destructive. She's just being a little weak, but we've also been shown that she also sometimes tries to do what is right, and is much nicer to a girl who should be her rival.
And See-Joo, maybe his flaw early on was that he was too "perfect," but we're seeing a darker side of him. He's sort of the reverse--he's outwardly pretty likeable, but we're seeing more and more hints of that entitled rich kid peeking through now.

1) Mirae and Future Mirae has no resemblance in any manner in character
2) Shin is being a jerk who doesn't like to listen no wonder there marriage hit the rocks
3) Why is YK getting a pass for the things she do? it's still ethically wrong for her to do some of the things she do so she could get Sj for herself
4) i rather Mirae end with no one in this love square
5) the writing is getting so lazy to the point i can understand why the ratings are going downhill
6) u can't relate to any of the characters
7) even though future mirae is annoying. w/o her meddling, this show is a third rate ordinary romance drama.

2- Yes, he is a jerk often, he is impulsive and has trust and anger issues, it's called good writing, complex characters.:)
3- Probably lots of us like the fact that once again she is a very believable character. As far as ethically wrong I don't remember her doing something like that.

I don't see anything wrong with the way YK is behaving. Yes, she's schemed a little to get Seju to confess but who is she hurting? Mirae? No, because Mirae did not want Seju in the first place. Seju? I find her way of getting Seju to come to his senses practical AND it would help her chances with Seju. In reality, if we're faced with this situation, I'd think most of us will do the same she did - if it doesn't involve hurting others. Anyway, I applaud her knowing what she wants and fighting for it, compared to Mirae who seems to be indecisive, vague and bumbling through it all.

I agree; Future Mi-rae probably only knows her own future which, by her telling, was pretty dire. Every time she intervenes and messes with the others' futures, she becomes increasingly unreliable as our narrator.
I mean, what's the future like at this point? Maybe the economy, technology, politics, the arts etc are being now controlled by a cartel of ex-cleaning women and a former matchmaker who have joined forces. They have taken Future Mi-rae's advice, are working their way through the C and D list of marriageable clients and investing, investing, investing.

No, the timeline has changed, but FMR totally fails to realize that. And the fact that she has not even considered it is one of the big weaknesses of the show.
In short, there is no feedback loop. FMR cannot figure out that things have already changed far beyond any control she might have had, but the writer just keeps on having her do the same old things over and over. The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over, hoping for a different result - and I think that is the trap the writer has fallen into.

If a guy is abusive or disrespectful towards the woman he likes at the early stage of relationship, he will get worse when he wins her over i.e. his abusive trait will even be more predominant in marriage.
Shin will change only if he sees the flaws himself. If his change is momentary i.e. in response to what people or Mirae says to him, it would not be a permanent change. A leopard will never change its spots.
Mirae should realistically assessed whether she wants to live with someone like Shin...the reason she gave Sejoo that she likes Shin was because he was helpful at work is not sound. Many other colleagues have helped her along including Sejoo, her brother, Writer Bae.

I think that others are doing some work too to help Kim Shin better himself and work on his bad traits. I think the conversation he had with See-Joo at the beginning of this episode was interesting. See-Joo called him out on some things (abuse juniors and kow tow to those in charge) and said some other things to make Kim Shin at least look at himself more closely.
And I think one of the reasons Kim Shin likes Mirae in this timeline is that she called him out early on when she started at the TV station--and she let him know what she wanted for herself, too. She's let him know that he is a jerk, even though she likes him. We're only halfway through the series now, so hopefully there will be more changes and some greater admission from him as to some of the things that are flawed about his character. I like it though, that it's not just Mirae calling him out--he shouldn't just change for love, but he should change his bad traits to better himself for himself, and for the other people who have to interact with him.

All I can hope at this point is that MHIYD does amazingly well overseas to make up for the low ratings. I enjoy the show, but going in I knew it could have issues being a ratings monster. Dramas, no matter how big the names are, don't deliver huge ratings the way they used to unless they're bringing something else to the table. IHYV had an epic backstory plus weekly subplots with an unpredictable love triangle. " Master's Sun" had fantasy, romance, and weekly subplots as well. Good Doctor wasn't your average medical drama. You got to see a character dramaland hasn't seen before in addition to the weekly medical subplots.
The closest MHIYD has come to delivering on that front were with last weeks eps. I love the show and love the cast even more. But the writers could have really fleshed out the Morning show element of the show more giving the staff really interesting stories to work on each week while building up to the staff dealing with epic stories like the one we had last week. All that could play out while we see Mirae figure out who she's interested in. Instead of FMR just nagging Mirae about her future husband, she could have been giving her leads on big stories this whole time. It would give FMR a whole lot more purpose than she has now.

I was hoping for more movement in ep8, but as far as characters go it was almost a repeat of ep7. Same thing, different locations.

I don't read all the comments but the majority of comments I've seen seem to indicate people want young Mi-rae to pick Se-joo this time. Personally I want her to pick Shin again just to shove it down stupid Ajumma Mi-rae's throat.

I am pulling at straws here, is it possible that the writer is attempting a modern day version of Sense & Sensibility with the characters Present & Future Mi-rae.
Emotions vs. Mind
Does acting upon what our brain thinks is rational save or condemn us?
Does the heart know what we truly want?
The sole purpose of the time-travel premise with Future Mi-rae is to allow the writer to demonstrate how the dichotomy of sense vs. sensibility can either limit or embellish one’s judgment of character.
In the storyline, is the writer actually pursuing the choice of marrying someone based upon a strong physical attraction/passion versus an initial foundation of friendship developing into love and marriage with Kim Shin and Park Seo-joo?
Ultimately, between the choices and actions of PMR vs. FMR, which incarnation of Mi-rae will be triumphant in the end.

Maybe. But I've been seeing lot of dramas with the idealism versus cynicism/reality tension. Alice in C., Secret, and this one. So many women who chose to do the good noble thing and then live to regret their nobility.

it's really hard to like kim shin
hot tempered.easily agitated. lashed out when he's angry
doesn't want to hear explanations. wants things to be his way. so prideful and principled
and who give him the right to insult Mirae?
i can see why Mirae turned out so bitter and cranky after spending 25 years of marriage life with him if his personality doesn't improve much
that kind of man can drove you crazy

Yeah, far be it for Ahjumma Mi-rae (AKA FMR) to truly know what she endured and is justified in warning Present Mi-rae to avoid following in her footsteps at all costs.
Sometimes people experience a rude awakening from marrying a person and not really knowing certain aspects of a person's personality or behavior.
In this day and age, thank goodness for Pre-Marital Counseling.
In real life, so many people have ignored the warnings only to realize they can only fault themselves for not heeding the warning and wisdom.
Of course as a romantic-comedy kdrama, I seriously doubt Mi-rae's Choice will take the rare opportunity validate this side of the corn as the urgent reason for the mystery behind FMR's time-travel is revealed!

agree..not much of a chance for a marital switch. I'd have hope if the writer weren't always showing us Aegyo girl. If Se-Joo hadn'tmarried, then it'd be okay because YK wouldn't have to hav her destiny destroyed.

I'm actually pleased with how well the whole news/tv station work place is doing at being incorporated into this drama with people who desire to be there. It doesn't just feel like a back drop for all the romantic antics.

I love this drama! It is so funny, the scene in the bus is made me laugh ^^ I like all the characters. Mi rae's got a real problem in look but she's still really charming. I love her relashionship with her brother. I love kim shin and they look really great together.
Se joo and Yoo kyun are really nice, I like them because they could be cliche but they are not..
Miranda is funny!! Love this drama!

I am really impressed by the little details on this show. For instance on the resume, Choate boarding school in Wallingford, CT is a real, prestigious school where the elite and upper crust matriculate from.
However, I'm disappointed in some of the other larger elements like that ridiculous fall into the fire which looks very silly and is a k-drama clique.
Overall the show is keeping my interest but I'm ready for more reveals into the future and future-lady's grips with Shin.

I really tried to like the main OTP but i still can't! Maybe its because i dont even like them individually? P.mirae is really immature for her age...hell! I'm 21 and more mature than her! She acts like a teenager who is really "innocent." There is nothing appealing about her...her personality? She is sometimes strong and other times really really weak. Her appearance? I wouldn't have any problem if her character was likeable but it isn't and also her dressing...don't wanna go there! To me, she is not a strong female lead.
Kim shin...I don't know if the writer wants us to hate him or what? He was a prick in the beginning then suddenly he became mr. PERFECT and now he again showed his bad side. Honestly, no one in their right mind would want a husband like him who has a major temperament issue but hey! its a drama...we must like the 'jerk' because really deep down he is a good person! And don't worry! the writer will make him mr. perfect again in the next few episodes LOL
I'm done with this drama like seriously!

I really don't like both characters individually. Mi-rae is just ridiculous, and because of her personality i find her outer appearance to be unlikable too

It hurts my soul that I know Mirae isn't gonna get with Hubba Hubba SJ….But the whole winning her because he sees her as an object wasn't my favorite part but MAANNN!!!! what are ya gonna do,MR and KS are gonna be together- in the beginning of the drama no matter how hard the Older MR tried to warn MR about the accident it happened anyway...

I started this one with high hopes, then they sort of flagged after episode 6 into 7. Put this one on a back burner, and skimmed your write up to see if it was still worth pursuing. After seeing this 8th episode, I am glad I did.
Perhaps all are hoping for Mi-rae and Shin to be the couple at the end. That would leave Se-joo and Yoo-kyung as the other. While Shin is an interesting character, and I have not quite a good read on him yet, I am pulling for Mi-rae and Se-joo. There is just something about the quality of the two of them together that appeals to me more. Their’s seems to be a more equal, but still unequal connection. He is the experienced and jaded one, she is the older, but in some ways so much younger steady rock. He also has this, and perhaps is just finding this out, as he did in 4th grade to win the car, which he still proudly still has.
Reporter Yoo-kung has developed from the beginning. She is growing in character and on me, but for some reason I do not want to see her with Se-joo. I know Lee Dong-gun is just playing a part as Shin, and perhaps it is just that, the character himself. I do not see him with Mi-rae, even without Ajumma’s warnings and all else.

Hell no! I don't want YK to be with SJ that hoe was scheming from the beginning! she never wanted to help him get with MR…God how I hate cockblockers…sorry I'm getting fresh now…:/ let me tone it down.
In the end, maybe this drama will end up with MR being an independent woman trying to make a name for herself…like in Coffee Prince- she went away at the end to become a better barista instead of just getting with the rich chaebol. Becoming an educated woman and making opportunities for herself and getting the guy is an extra…who knows...

From the comments I read, looks like I'm the only one that rooting for Kim Shin - Mi Rae. I know it's cliche, I know it's predictable... But, I always get a toothache every time I see Shin's expression when she looks at Mi Rae. It's the spark that I cannot feel when she's with Seejoo which I feel no more than sweet moment.
Well, that's my opinion though. I will ride Kim Shin - Mi Rae ship till the end. =)

I really can't understand this drama. I don't think this drama is good at all. I'm only watching it here and there cux I have some time to spare during dinner. Here is my frustration with this drama:
1) There is such a big difference b/w current Mi-rae (CMR) and future Mi-rae (FMR). You have to remember, these 2 are supposed to be the SAME people. Through their acting, I really don't think they are the same.
2) By this point in time, I think if CMR has finally accepted that FMR is really herself and not some random ajumma, she should really try to understand FMR. Think about it, your future self came to talk to you... don't you want to know what happens in YOUR future??
3) FMR is not good at whatever she's trying to do. if you want shin out of the picture, why would you give him that story?... you should just leave him to go to some other country.
3b) FMR... really?... it's about time you tell someone what really happened for you to come here.. Remember... you being here for 1 day = 1 year.. You're not getting any younger!
4) It doesn't make sense why shin and CMR are attacted to each other. They never went through the stuff that should have happened (ie, the car crash, the hospital visits, etc.). BECAUSE they have chagned the past, the past DOESN'T exist anymore. Why would they have snippets of those events in their head? And in any case, from what I'm seeing, the reason why they are attracted to each other is cux of those events they keep 'dreaming' about. So like Sejoo said, it's maybe because she was told that Shin was her future husband, so that's why she has feeling for him. Cux think about it.. if the same thing happened to Sejoo and the reporter, then Sejoo wouldn't be falling for CMR...
Sorry for the long 'rant', just that I think the writing on this story is terrible. Nothing flows, and I can't see it thru their acting.

I'm liking this drama so far...but the only thing that gets me is that following the logic of the drama, it doesn't matter what you do, Fate will always push you in its path. I have no problems with Fate, but more of the execution. So following the laws of Fate, Se-joo should be with Yoo-kyung and not Mi-rae. I understand that it may happen at some future point. However, for Mi-rae, although she never got into the first accident with Shin, they are naturally progressing in their relationship. And there doesn't seem to be any attraction between Shin and Yoo-kyung.
Therefore, by this logic, Yoo-kyung shouldn't have such a one-sided crush on Se-joo. So although she never went on the trip, her and Se-joo are fated for one another. Se-joo should be developing feelings for Yoo-kyung. However, this is not shown. It just doesn't follow the laws of this drama and Fate. I understand that Mi-rae is the heroine, but I mean they could at least show Se-joo having some conflicted feelings. At this point, it seems he could care less about Yoo-kyung. Maybe Yoo-kyung got on Fate's bad side.
Other than that, I think the drama is fun to watch. It's pretty lighthearted. The acting is done really well. And there are bits of funny moments as well.

No way, absolutely no way i would still go with Shin, after my future self comes back to warn me. And being so graphic about just what was bad about Shin.
Having once had to make such a choice myself, no way, no way i would not make a serious go for Se-joo.

After I watched the drama, I found the story was nice but I still didn't like YEY character as Na Mi Rae or maybe because her curyl hair ^_^
I still hope that Na Mi Rae will choose Se Joo because He was helpful, nice and sweet toward her since she arrived for the first time in YBS.
sorry but to say, I found that the moment between See Jo & Mi Rae was more sweeter than Shin-Mi Rae.
