Joo Jin-mo as warrior king in Empress Ki

Yesterday we had Ha Ji-won; now it’s her co-star Joo Jin-mo’s turn in the promo spotlight for upcoming drama Empress Ki. (Who wants to bet that tomorrow we’ll get a nice four-shot set of promos featuring third co-star Ji Chang-wook? Not that I’d ever refuse pretty stills of Ji Chang-wook.)

Joo Jin-mo makes up one leg of the love triangle in the MBC sageuk about the Goryeo woman who becomes Yuan empress, with Ji Chang-wook taking up the other leg. Joo Jin-mo plays the Goryeo king who’ll rival the Yuan emperor (that’ll be Ji) in the romance department, and probably also the political one, given that the drama is set during a time when Goryeo was struggling to free itself from its Yuan oppressors. Add in some court intrigue, arranged marriages, and political turmoil and the drama should have a lot of material to work with.

I’m not quite sure how the drama will play out the romance, since it’s well-known history that Empress Ki became, well, empress. Hence her romance with the Goryeo king can only be the tragic kind, and while the conflict is pretty compelling, I think I’ve had enough of tragic sageuk romances for a while. Coming from the sharp writer team of History of a Salaryman and Giant is allllllmost enough to get me to consider giving this a whirl… until I recall that the two PDs’ last projects were May Queen and Dr. Jin. What’s worse, boring or incompetent?

The 50-episode drama will premiere on Monday, October 28.

Yeah, I'd take those odds to Vegas about My Precious's promo shots. They're on their way!!! :P

BTW, the first trailer and a ton more BTS stills are up on the Soompi Forum. We've been quite busy over the last few hours, so go enjoy all The Pretty!

This drama is seriously giving me the bipolar disease. One moment I'm so watching it, the other I'm like no way!

In anycase, OMG, finallllly! Goddess of Fire is going to end. I dropped it like a hot potato early on because seriously - in my life, I've never seen a bigger snoozefest. I have nothing going for me on Mon/tue since Gu Family (which I was nearly - no, completely obsessed with). These dramas are usually motivation for me got anticipate the dreaded start of the week LOL. So I'm really hoping this is good, or Mirae's choice... I need something good on Mondays!

Competent writers and the main reason why I want to watch this show. The head writer also penned the pre-Goryeo "Dae Jo Young" back in 2006. This director...siiiiiiiiigh*

I'm guessing it'll start out in Goryeo then end in Yuan. She was a grown woman before she was shipped off to Yuan. Huizong was exiled to Goryeo and Chung-hye was probably a hostage in Yuan like Goryeo kings (princes rather) of later Goryeo.

Boring is worse, cause an incompetent show can still be fun to watch.
Boring is the last switch for me to stop watching.

Agreed! I drop shows once they start going into boring territory, whereas I don't drop incompetent shows immediately since they mostly give me a good laugh. (Like Dr. Jin ;))

I'm the opposite. Incompetent writers make boring dramas like Goddess Of Fire. I am a sageuk junkie and I've watch a lot, good and bad but this writer was one of the worst. Dr Jin had a bad director who took most of the blame and it was unintentionally hilarious. So I don't know, the two seems related cause I usually blame the writer when a show is boring.

He looks tough enough to handle Ha Ji Won. She's had too many leading men recently who are weaseling littile shits who have to grow up to match her.

why does every kdrama have to have a love triangle lol seriously.. even one about an empress. I don't think there was a triangle in real life. can't they go with other plot devices

Has there ever been a successful/critically lauded sageuk? Seems likes there's always something good & bad about 'em (like good/bad writer-PD combo)...

The best sageuk in my opinion is Conspiracy in the Court. At 8 episodes, it's so good but so underrated as well.

Omg.
You missed a classic.
Just for the heck of it read the recaps here on the site and the comments that follow each ep. I just did that the other night and laughed just as much as I did when Dr. Jin was airing.
Dr. Jin has to be my most favorite all-time horrible drama ever watched (and I'm a veteran who watched ALL of "1,000 Kisses" and lived to tell the tale!)!

I salute your courage, your eyeballs, your intestinal fortitude! Are your monitors still intact? Nothing thrown against the wall? I almost didn't watch Queen In-Hyun's Man because I was still angry with Ji-Hyun Woo.

And you are right, the Dr. Jin recaps are a comedy classic - MUCH better than the actual drama.

i didn't get bored with May Queen, because of the stars of the drama. In Empress Ki, i will also bank on the stars and not the story or how incompetent it will be (i hope and pray not). I'm sure i won't get bored with the 4 leads =).

In Dr. Jin, i didn't bother watching after 4 episodes, i didn't like the leads. Nothing to hook me in.

Its party time for Empress Ki hitting high rating points, everybody is merrying but I dont see JJM, is he anti social? Pretty Ha Ji Won and Ji are having fun behind the scene, JJM is the lead actor, there's no sign of him! Why?

Joo Jin Mo saved Empress Ki from being a total mess. The way he portrayed Wang Yoo is magnificent. I can't imagine other actors playing the role. He IS Wang Yoo, Wang Yoo is Joo Jin Mo. You can't distinguish them anymore, it's like they are one. I am hoping for another sageuk drama from him, but a better ending for his character. I didn't know this actor before, but because of the series, I became a die-hard fan. I cried for his role. That's how effective he is, affecting the viewers by being an awesome actor that he is.
