Good Doctor: Episode 18
by gummimochi
A dream can be a wonderful thing that drives your motivation, fulfill your greatest desires, and let you imagine your greatest fantasies. But sometimes it can also make you yearn for the unattainable, warn you for the future, and remind you of something already lost. That’s the incredible thing about dreams, though: even if you don’t get the outcome you expected, you can always dream up a new one.
If you can believe it, this show gets even funnier, which is something I didn’t expect this late in the game. In terms of numbers, Good Doctor holds the top spot with a 20.6%, setting us up for (hopefully) a good position in finale week.

EPISODE 18 RECAP
Thanks to the untreated stab wound, Do-han reels in pain in the operating room. He stubbornly insists that he’s fine, but the pain becomes too much to bear. At least he has enough sense to hand off the surgery to Yoon-seo and oversee the procedure from the sidelines.
So the team proceeds, tapping into Shi-on’s visual ability and knowledge at each step. The surgery is a success, and in a strained voice, Do-han praises his team on a job well done.
Do-han finally rests afterwards, and given Do-han’s dangerous episode at the start, Assistant Chief Kang isn’t happy with him. But Do-han takes out the baseball in his pocket, saying this was the reason why he couldn’t leave the operating room.
“The reason I step into that operating room is for my team’s and that child’s future, ten, twenty years from now. If I don’t give up on that child’s future, then there’s no reason for me to give up on the surgery.” Do-han explains.
Do-han finally gets his wound treated, and Yoon-seo scowls at him when he yelps in pain. She clucks disapprovingly at his workaholic nature: “Do you think you’re Iron Man?! He gets wounded, too!”
She nags at him to go and rest, jabbing her tweezers at his wound when he doesn’t listen. Heh.
Having heard of Dad’s fainting spell, Shi-on rushes over to his hospital room in a panic. Doctor Choi tells him that Dad doesn’t have much time left.
Mom confides in Shi-on outside, telling him her intention to move with Dad back to their hometown in the countryside to spend his final days. But Shi-on shakes his head and says they can’t leave, afraid that Mom will be subject to more abuse. Mom says it’s unlikely, but Shi-on doesn’t like the idea at all.
Yoon-seo sides with Shi-on on his decision to keep Dad at the hospital, calling his behavior thoughtful and mature. Shi-on says he pities both of his parents and that feeling makes him angry.
She gently asks why, and Shi-on answers that if they both abandoned him for twenty years, they should have at least lived a comfortable life without him. But Yoon-seo is proud that Shi-on has finally acknowledged and embraced his anger because it finally gives him the confidence to be strong for his parents.
President Lee appeals to one of the hospital’s financial investors for more time, but gets promptly shut down. Chae-kyung gets upset on her stepmother’s behalf once they’re alone, and president Lee thanks her for staying by her side.
Yoon-seo speaks with Doctor Pomade in his office, and the sudden shower of praise and concern takes her by surprise. At one point he asks, “Since when have you been so pretty? Since you were three? Ten? Or since you were born?”
She suppresses a laugh before answering, “Since I was born,” and then walks away with this hilarious WTF expression on her face. HA.
It’s good news for In-hye, who has finally recovered from her intestinal shock episode. She wonders if she’ll be able to grow up to be a pretty adult like her sister, and Shi-on tells her that she’s pretty now, too.
She immediately asks who’s prettier—her or Yoon-seo? Without hesitation, he answers: “Yoon-seo.” Heh. It’s nice to see In-hye back to her usual cheery and playful self, but she does momentarily wonder why Shi-on keeps staring at her.
Shi-on paces back and forth in the staff room with worry, to which Yoon-seo asks what’s on his mind. He describes it as the uneasy feeling when you think you’ve left the stove on or forgotten to log out of a computer. Basically he means that he feels they need to run more tests on both participants before surgery.
Their most recent test results came up clean, but Yoon-seo admits that she too feels uneasy. Shi-on says that he has a favor to ask, and Yoon-seo really really has to grant it.
That takes them to Doctor Kim’s office, and they launch into an explanation of the risks in surgery. Doctor Kim cuts them off and curtly puts Yoon-seo in her place for her arrogance. Shi-on pipes up in her defense, and demands the senior doctor to apologize.
That goes over as well as you might expect, and Yoon-seo leads Shi-on out before the tense situation escalates any further. Although she’s amused and pleased by Shi-on’s furious reaction, she literally has to pull him back from storming back into the office.
It looks like we’re not completely rid of the Evil Board Administrator, who is enlisted to take over the hospital board presidency on Creepy Chairman’s recommendation. Assistant Chief Kang isn’t happy to hear it, but he’s told that it’s only temporary and to continue to keep an eye out.
Nurse Jo is in the middle of another lecture from Nurse Nam about his duties when a group of gangster thugs approach them, holding up a news article and calling him “hyungnim.” Ha, was Nurse Jo part of the mob? That’s hilarious and also explains things.
Nurse Nam eavesdrops from the corner as Nurse Jo tells the thugs that he’s put his fighting days past him and warns them never to come looking for him again. Then I love how all the nurses are skittish around him when he returns, frightened that their jolly nurse could still be a mobster.
Yoon-seo informs the assistant chief’s son that the surgery was a success. But there’s a caveat: he won’t be able to play baseball again. She’s surprised to hear he already knows.
Then we see in flashback that Do-han had prepared him for the outcome: “But you know what’s great about dreams? That you can always have a different dream. So you’re not throwing your dream away, but you dream again.”
Placing the baseball back in his hands, Do-han tells him he can make another “first,” and though he doesn’t know what it is yet, he has the boy promise him to tell him when it does happen.
His new dream is to study hard and grow up to become a baseball reporter, the boy says. He turns to his father and apologizes for not telling him sooner for fear he might worry, but Assistant Chief Kang just squeezes his son’s hand.
The introduction to our next medical case is so brief that it’s almost fleeting, but the mother picks up on Shi-on’s unique mannerisms, finding them slightly odd.
Meanwhile, Yoon-seo comes up with a list of excuses to get out of another date with her Voldemort seon. She jumps when she sees Shi-on standing behind her, and he asks if she’s going to see him again.
When Yoon-seo says no, he asks why she didn’t tell the guy directly then, saying that she should have cut ties right away if she’s not interested. Pfft, I love that she’s the one being lectured at this time.
She in turn asks why he was eavesdropping then, to which he says he could hear her voice from out in the hallway. Yoon-seo: “You should have plugged your ears then!” Hahaha, their childish bickering also cracks me up. Then she asks if Shi-on heard Do-han’s lesson for the little boy about dreams.
At home, Do-han finally solves that 12-sided Rubik’s cube with a smile. The doorbell rings just then—it’s Shi-on with food in hand. He says that he knows it’s hard to take care of yourself when you’re living alone, and reassures his boss that he’s heading back to work soon.
Then he starts to praise Do-han for getting through to the assistant chief’s son, and just when he’s about to throw up his trademark thumbs-up, Do-han points back at him warningly: “Don’t do it!” Cue awkward silence. Ha.
Shi-on admits that Do-han feels like a hyung to him ever since he saved him from those street thugs. He’s eternally grateful for Do-han, and then runs out.
Jin-wook informs In-hye that her transplant surgery will proceed as scheduled. He notes her downcast expression, and she confesses that she’s grown afraid at the idea of death lately.
Her near-death experience drove that fear into her heart, and Jin-wook tells her not to worry. He keeps a smile on his face, but I don’t know—the serious tone in her voice worries me.
Jin-wook makes sure to put In-young at ease as well, saying that it’s common for children to grow anxious prior to surgery. He remains professional per her request, but she does ask him once more if he’s getting enough sleep.
In-hye finds Shi-on with his head hanging in their usual corner. It looks like he’s been having a tough time dealing with his one-sided crush, and she assures him that’s all part of being in love.
Il-kyu lets out a deep sigh as he recalls Doctor Pomade’s explanation as to why he was chosen for this hospital. Shi-on comes in yawning, and makes up an excuse to leave, but Il-kyu doesn’t kick him out and tells him to get some rest.
The residents aren’t all that excited about this year’s staff production of Peter Pan (only Shi-on claps, heh) since it means they’ll have to wear costumes. Then they’re reminded of how Yoon-seo twisted her ankle playing Cinderella last year, much to the group’s amusement.
They wonder if they’ll manage to wrangle Do-han into participating this year, which is when Do-han calls out: “I won’t do it!” Challenge Accepted.
Then we see Shi-on rush over to the assistant chief son’s room to ask him for a favor.
The ethics committee meets in regards to privatize the hospital for-profit. Do-han argues that they cannot pick and choose their patients based upon their income level, and Doctor Kim counters that it’s inevitable.
Doctor Choi steps to suggest they appeal to the board as a collective voice as doctors, but Doctor Kim believes it will hardly make a scratch, and they’re unable to reach an agreement as a result.
Doctor Pomade offers his help to Do-han after the meeting, in hopes to put his seniority to use. He then points towards Assistant Chief Kang and Doctor Kim, who are deep in conversation.
Assistant Chief Kang runs into Shi-on in the hall, and asks if he still thinks him a bad person. Shi-on says that the assistant chief is half-bad and half-good. He figures the bad part is the takeover and asks about the good. Shi-on: “That you believed in Do-han and our team.”
“I’m always grateful to those people who believes in others,” Shi-on explains. “If you believe in him, they become stronger and feel ‘full’ inside. Trust is like a bike’s air pump, and if the tires are full of air, they end up running like the wind.”
Yoon-seo asks Do-han if he can appeal to Doctor Kim about In-hye’s surgery, only to be told that he’s waiting for a reason to justify going up against the senior doctor.
Last time, the rumor that he wouldn’t take responsibility for his patient drove him to accept the surgery last time. But he needs clear evidence before taking action, so he’s waiting for the same in In-hye’s case.
Yoon-seo gives him a thumbs up, and Do-han tells her to stop that, too. Ha, but he laughs anyway.
Doctor Pomade talks to his brother-in-law evil board administrator outside, who tells him this is his last chance to stay focused because he can soon become this hospital’s chief-of-staff. Doctor Pomade is alarmed to hear it. Don’t be tempted! You’ve just gone good!
Shi-on visits Dad while he’s asleep, and thinks to himself: “I don’t wish for anything else. You don’t have to tell me you’re sorry. Just… don’t hit Mom. Then I’ll be thankful to you, Dad.”
Then Shi-on invites Mom out to eat lunch at a beef restaurant. He says today’s his payday (aw), and then places bulgogi over Mom’s spoon just like she did for him last time (double aw). Mom is touched by the gesture, and he tells her they can go out to eat whenever she likes (triple aw).
He does, however, have one question: “Why didn’t you come looking for me after you ran away [from Dad]?”
We hear Mom’s answer in voiceover as Shi-on sits alone in the dark locker room. She’d wanted to come find him, but she soon found out Dad was doggedly chasing after her, and she didn’t want to endanger her son or Doctor Choi. All she could do was trust the notion that he’d be well taken care of by the good doctor.
The little boy’s mother takes up her irritation with Yoon-seo, saying she can’t have someone with a disability take care of her son. To which, really? Are we back to this again? The other mothers say that Shi-on is a fine doctor, but she won’t hear a word of it.
But Shi-on interrupts to say that they will grant her request, and Yoon-seo pulls him aside to ask if he’s really okay with it. Shi-on says that he is because he knows that he’s different from other people, and that it’s understandable that not everyone will accept him.
He rests assured in the fact that there are still people who will choose him based on his skills, but there is one thing that still upsets him: the fact that he is different from everyone else. Shi-on then shrugs it off like it’s no big deal and shuffles away.
Yoon-seo worries that Shi-on may be more upset about the brush-off than he appears, but Do-han disagrees. Shi-on has gained more self-confidence, and his extraordinary abilities doesn’t necessarily set him apart from the pack anymore.
Now Shi-on has gained an essential skillset that complements his genius; to the point that even without his savant condition, he’d still be a good doctor. She notes that Shi-on now falls into the second option: an average doctor who has common sense.
Shi-on runs into Il-kyu in the on-call room again, and this time Il-kyu asks if he can bring some more of that yookgyejang (spicy beef soup) Shi-on made for them for breakfast. D’aww, ya big softie.
As Shi-on swings by the house, his eyes fall upon his bed, and he recalls how pretty Yoon-seo looked as she slept, her face bathed in the moonlight. At the same time, Yoon-seo steps out on to her balcony when she suddenly hears Shi-on’s voice from his own porch.
Shi-on speaks to the moon as if it were Yoon-seo herself, saying that he didn’t say why the fact that he’s different upsets him. “It’s because of you,” he answers, “I’m really okay with being different… but whenever I think of you, I get sad.”
He’d be able to make her happy if he was much more impressive and sing to her often. He says he’s no good (lies, hiss), but it’s a song he’s always wanted to sing to her.
If I were the sky
I would want to color your faceA red-colored evening like the sunset
I would want to color your cheeksIn the world, no matter what it is
I want to become everything for you
Like today
Because we are together
You don’t know how happy that makes me
Do you know, the one I love
My heart
As he sings, we see an imaginary idyllic date where they spend a sunny afternoon in the park playing basketball, and end with a sweet kiss over ice cream. The thought brings tears to Yoon-seo’s eyes.
The pediatric ward is abuzz about the Peter Pan production, and it turns out that Shi-on is casted in the lead role. They note that Captain Hook hasn’t been cast yet, and are told that it’s to be determined.
Then we see the assistant chief’s son plead with Do-han that it’s his wish to see Do-han participate the play. Puhahaha. And he totally pulls the “I think I’ll get better if you do it” guilt card.
Next thing we know, Do-han rehearses with the others, riding on his office chair ship and using a hanger as a hook. HAHAHAHAHA. Oh, this is brilliant, and his stone-faced expression sells the moment.
The fact that Do-han is a terrible actor is just icing on the cake. I’m so amused right now, I don’t know how to handle myself. The residents pin him as the black hole, to which Do-han snaps back defensively, “Then were you guys great from Day 1?”
They go for another take, and this time, Shi-on takes Yoon-seo’s hand, interlocking fingers. It clearly affects her, and she struggles to make sure not to let it show. She puts a hand to her racing heart afterward, wondering, “What’s wrong with me?”
Yoon-seo finds In-hye sitting in the hall, and In-hye invites her to take a seat. She then tells Yoon-seo that Shi-on is really sick, and he’s worse off than the kids in the ward.
We backtrack to In-hye and Shi-on’s earlier conversation where he confessed that although his emotional expression has gotten better lately, he’s still relatively bad at it. To a certain extent he’s relieved since that means he won’t have to worry about Yoon-seo noticing it.
There are times he wants to show her how he feels, but he’s unable to work up the nerve in the moment. It’d be nice if there was a display over his heart so it would be easier to show his feelings.
Yoon-seo finds Shi-on in the staff room, and she asks that he escort her home tonight. He agrees.
As they walk, he asks if something’s the matter, and she answers that there’s an idiot who causing her a great deal of frustration. He asks who it is, saying that it’s unacceptable because Yoon-seo should always feel at ease.
“But I’m not.” Yoon-seo replies. “Shi-on ah, why do you always pretend that everything’s okay and suffer on your own?”
He asks if he’s the one who’s made her frustrated. She nods. “Then who else would it be?”
Shi-on reminds her that he’d promised to make her feel comfortable. Pointing to his heart, she encourages to tell him to come right out with it and say what’s in his heart. Shi-on: “Then you and I would…” Yoon-seo: “We’d what? We wouldn’t be able to see each other again?”
She says they can because: “I… miss you as much as you do.”
Yoon-seo: “I bet you don’t know who makes me laugh and cry these days, right? You don’t know who makes my heart ache, do you?” Shi-on says it’s probably him, because he lacked in so many ways ever since he arrived, and she worried over him like a dongsaeng.
But that’s not it, Yoon-seo tells him. She says she’s been feeling strange lately and something has changed. Taking his arm, she says, “I don’t like the idea of you getting close to other women or when you ask me to set you up on blind dates. I don’t like… you depending on me anymore.”
“Now I… I…” Yoon-seo starts, and then steps forward to hug him.
COMMENTS
Now I… I… what?! WHAT?! You’re the one who just told Shi-on to be all truthy to his feelings! I suppose this is a good sign if I’m chomping at the bit for just a little more with one week left to go. I’m almost certain her next words are “I want to depend on you,” and yet, I’m just as satisfied with Yoon-seo’s hug. Just as long as we get an actual confession of some sort next week, just sayin’.
Even though Yoon-seo has seen the changes in Shi-on’s affect, behavior, and words both in and out of the hospital, and has told him how proud she is of said changes, the truth of how far Shi-on has come has finally hit her. Like Do-han told her, Shi-on has reached a point where even with his unique abilities, he’s complemented them with other skills that make him an equally competent doctor as anyone else in his field. He can stand on his own two feet without her help, as evidenced with the patient’s mother. He’s well-aware of the discrimination he faces every day, and has come to terms with it because he has rooted himself in his medical skills.
That brings us to the “Then what?” question that Yoon-seo currently wrestles with, along with the realization of her romantic feelings towards Shi-on. To that, Shi-on already knows the societal burden the other person will endure for being involved with a social outcast. Those worries are realistic and practical, which makes that dream sequence as sad as it is wonderful and sweet. But what I love about Shi-on’s perspective on love is how simple it is, where happiness stems from the thought of having someone by your side every day.
On the topic of dreams, I’m so relieved that we got to touch upon In-hye in this episode as well, since I found Monday’s drive-by to be lacking. I’ll admit that Shi-on’s dream still haunts me every time she talks about death because there’s a note of fear and dreaded anticipation that this One Surgery is going to go terribly wrong. I can’t shake off the feeling that we’re going to lose someone before the end of this show. Somebody tell me I’m crazy or something; I still have a week to prepare for the worst, don’t I?
I do want to stay optimistic while we still have the cute and endearing moments to carry us through each episode. Because this is one dream that I don’t want to forsake for a different one. Some dreams come true, right?

Well, as we only have 2 episodes left I guess they have to. I actually thought it was pretty well-paced and natural, and my perverted mind wanted Yoon-seo to grab Si On and kiss him at the end of Ep. 18 :P

I'm with you. I was sure there'd be a kiss this episode. I mean, there was, but I cry foul! We better get a real kiss by the end or there will be words.

I feel like it is not too fast.
but then, I am still only reading recaps not watching.
on the other hand, the bromance was kind of too fast. but eh, if you have given someone a gift to look inside other people and seen the other nekkid, I guess there is no helping it.
Do Han as Captain Hook, I am gonna go watch that scene alone. Must see
I wonder what Doctor Pomade is going to do. the thing I hate most in life, in books, in movies and in dramas, is when someone is already on the way to become a decent person and then does something stupid that deletes him from the list of The Good Guys Who Keep The World Running. what possible reason would a person have to be unreasonable? I just...greed? there is not enough greed in the world. cmon

I feel like they were kind of slow and steady to begin with the loveline and now that it's coming to an end it's like oh we need to hurry this along. I really thought 20 episodes would be sufficient but I actually wish Good Doctor would've started with 30 episodes to begin with lol.

That imagination with Shi On being a normal person made my heart ache. It was so sweet and beautiful and I just loved Joo Won singing the song twice but merged. Move aside, Moon Cha-won...my darling needs me. Waaah. ;P
I'm also enjoying the funny elements; can't wait for the Peter Pan production.
Thanks for the recap, Gummimochi. :)

Agree. That daydream scene was sweet but sad at the same time because it was Shi-On without his hardships and disability. Sort of like heaven where there's no pain or sorrow.
Although some say they wanted Moon Cha-won with Do-Han, I love her with Shi-On. The writer took a risk by pairing her with someone with a disability (risk b/c of low popularity) - but how beautiful is that? The writing is beautiful and noble.
I love this drama because of the message it shares with us.

Oh my god the Peter Pan rehearsal had me in stitches xD And I love that they used the guilt trip thing to get DH play Captain Hook :D Brilliant!
I also loved the Il Kyu-SO moments because it was about time that IK softens towards him!
I am not a big fan of the SO-YS love line but I guess I'll have to accept it...
As for In Hye... She's not gonna die, you hear me drama! Don't pull a crappy ending on me!

It's so nice to watch and see how the characters discover their innate, raw goodness thru psh. The change in each of the character came in diff timings and levels plus even psh is making a big change himself -- asking her mom on a date, learning self control, etc. What we're just waiting for is psh' epiphany that love doesn't equate to acceptance. That love is actually freeing and needs no qualification.

WoooooooooooooooW A Very Good Episode With Feelings Exploding All Over The Place. YS Finally Is Realising That She Begun To Fall In love With SO. SO Himself Begins To Interact With Others Especially His MOM & DAD And Changes Others Around Him To Better Persons Also. As For The Whole Hospital TakeOver "I Don't Know Really", It Looked Like Another Story To Be Interested In But Then The Writer Didn't Give It Much A Space But Maybe In The Last Two Episodes It Will End. Finally A Long waiting For KISS. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Thanks For The Recap.

Thank you for the recap. To be honest I was surprised that the episodes suddenly became better since ep 16.
It's not me right? It's moving along well, then there is progression forward both professionally and emotionally.
Good doctor is turning up to be more of a human interest drama. In Hye's story worries me, there are too many dark hints and I've grown to love her. I know where the SI and YS love line will end up- it will probably be open ended.
However, In Hye. In Hye's story worries me. It really is pointing to her crashing during the operation.
Aish can't believe we are down to the last 2 episodes.

What I love about Si-on is that he’s such a sweetheart to the core. It’s sadly rare to find a K-drama hero these days that’s so giving and kind from start to finish. I recently wrote a post about this on my blog, and instead of giving a top 5, I had a hard time coming up with 5 examples period. Si-on, of course, was on the list. This episode just upped the sugar factor for me as he even worries about the discrimination his friends face from hanging around him. He just breaks your heart (in a good way), and I’m so glad Yoon-seo is starting to recognize the awesome.

Okay, the dream sequence and the changing of the singing from Si-On to Joo Won was really heart tugging.
I wish it would have ended there because I can't shake off the squick...he is written as having the mental age of 13. And even if I really like Yoon Seo and don't think she would mistreat him in any way and that he has grown in so many ways, he is still 13 and well, that ends it for me. Period.

You're not the only one... I feel like there's a foreshadowing of something bad to come, namely that IH is going to die. I really hope that doesn't happen b/c I don't think it's necessary to the story the Good Doctor is telling.
I have started watching this drama again a week ago b/c I thought the storyline got better and while I'm normally not a fan of longer dramas, this is one where I think 24 episode length would have helped make the progression to all the relationships, especially the ones with Shi-on feel more natural. Given the time limit they have, I think the writer is doing a good job.

I confess I'm starting to think that something will happen to In-hye, and I'm not going to like it. She seems almost resigned in a way that a kid her age shouldn't. It makes me sad.
I liked the dream sequence of Shi-on and Yoon-seo. I wonder what she's gonna say to him. I can't believe the episode stopped there!
My favorite part was Do-han's "Hook". LOL! Can't wait to see next week's episodes!

I honestly thought the writers would go the route of meddling with Do Han and Chae Kyung's relationship with Do Han falling for Yoon Seo, in "competition" with Si On. But I guess they aren't going to go deep into conflict and complicated relationships with this drama as it isn't that long (20 episodes) and it's more medical focused. I do still wish that they could've explored that a bit more because the writers were hinting the possible love line between Do Han and Yoon Seo but I guess time restraints etc took a toll on that. :(
I like Si On and all but everytime Yoon Seo and Do Han are together, I still see "sparks". Lol.

I liked the whole issue with the woman not wanting Shi On as her son's doctor. It shows this is something he'll have to deal with for the rest of his career. No matter how skilled or how much he improves in his speech and mannerisms, there will still be people out there not wanting his help. Also just furthers the issues that Dr. Cha will face if she did start dating Shi On. She will be seen differently and she will face hardships. I don't even want to think about what her mom would think. I wonder if they will bring that up?

I have a bad feeling about In Hye as well. She's such a great character! She's lived her entire life with pain, suffering and the possibility of an early death. This has given her a wisdom beyond her years. But the reality is that she is a very sick child in a hospital full of very sick children and sometimes sick children do die. This is the world Shi-on and the other doctors have chosen to make their lives.
I know we have already seen the tragic death of one child in the operating theatre but we don't really get to know the child except as how her death shakes Dr Cha's confidence temporarily. In Hye's situation is entirely different. Everyone knows and loves her including the viewers. She's been in and out of the hospital for years. Medical professionals can grow close to their patients, especially if that patient is a loveable child. But Shi-on and the other doctors and nurses should never forget the limits of their power to make things right. For a good doctor, death is a reality that must be faced. In Hye's death would be a moving reminder of this fact. I, for one will be weeping if this is the direction the writer wants to take but it will feel right.
I like the romantic possiblities between Shi-on and Yoon-seo but I have personal reasons for doing so. A close relative of mine has "high functioning autism" like Shi-on. He has a high paying job he does very well with a company that values his contributions. He is engaged to be married to a beautiful young woman. It's great to see them together. She is aware of his limitations in certain situations and she clues him into what's acceptable and what's not in the gentlest possible way. They make a great team and are very happy together. In fact, she's pleased she "got" him before some other woman saw his wonderful qualities and "snapped him up" (her exact words).
I really love this drama!

I know! Like he's never going to be able to move beyond his so-called mental age. I thought it was explained very well by the director. Shi-on is stuck in the beginning of the drama because he has frozen himself mentally to cope with all the horrible things that have happened to him. Beatings, pets brutally killed, the death of his older brother/protector, the isolation of his youth in the orphanage. Awful, awful stuff! But he's becoming unstuck and thawing emotionally. He's always going to have certain limitations but that doesn't have to stop him from experiencing adult life and all the good things it has to offer. My relative, for example, is fixated on multiples of three and that's never going to change. My family and his fiancee all accept this as part of his quirky character and we deal with it because we love him.

Lindy12,
The director did explain this (being stuck) however, what is not clear is where he is right now (i.e. does he still have a mental age of 13?). With this lingering, I can't ship them. If it gets resolved in a time jump...maybe.

I'm with you. He still seems pretty young mentally, though he is growing and learning episode by episode. I would rather have it be open-ended at this point, with only the possibility that in the future they'll have a romantic relationship, than anything concrete developing. But if they did want to show us a little peek into the future when Shi On has made more progress, well, I wouldn't mind. ;)

LizJ, K, and bambledd have expressed my feelings on this much better than I ever could. To me, Shi-on is a man now, both physically and mentally, but he has a disability that will be life long. He loves Yoon-seo in a very adult way. He wants what's best for her, knows that society will probably condemn their potential relationship as unfitting, worries that she will suffer his same outcast status. He's willing to forego any real chance at romance because he's put what he see as her needs ahead of his own. In my opinion, there's no way this man still has the mental age of a 13 year old. I have teenaged sons of my own so I'm kind of familiar with the breed.

This is just CREEPY. I know I am not the only one cringing. I want to go along with it because I have enjoyed this drama. Enough, however, is enough.
How can the writer decide to keep pushing forward with the story line when it clearly is not working? There is not enough time to further Park Si On’s progress to the point where its believable – nor permissible by anyone’s standards. A woman with the emotional maturity of an Adult – no matter how much they are currently trying to fill the gap by pushing her youthful ‘immaturity’ -coupling with a man with the maturity of an early aged teenager at best – whom throughout the story line finds more in common both physically and emotionally with children and still does – is nothing short of abusive.
If I were Park’s mother I would be doing everything in my power to preserve his innocence and his natural rate of development. The thought that an experienced adult would be engaging in a ‘love story’ which presumably includes physical intimate contact with my child-like son is appalling. Shame. Shame.

I respectfully disagree, woodang. He is depicted as being well able to take care of himself and make responsible decisions. I personally think it's a mistake to take his communication skills and outward behavior - especially at the beginning of the story- and assume an immature mind is behind it. When I think about it, he's also depicted as being highly intelligent (beyond the savant capabilities) because he is able to adapt and work hard to overcome problems related to his disability.

I think I understand what they are trying to say in the above comment. This character does have advanced IQ or mental capabilities but his social/emotional state is that of a elementary school student (I'm a counselor and work with 6th graders). To me it is hard to reconcile a socially/emotionally mature adult being satisfied by someone who doesn't have the understanding of your mood or able to read your social cues - such as when you are annoyed, upset, need a hug etc. I'm not sure people (women especially) who make meaningful connections via social relationships would feel content to be with someone who lacks the consideration for those types of things that we do everyday and take for granted - example asking "How was your day" and then listen.
Working with students/adults on the autism spectrum is challenging. Lots of times holding a back and forth conversation is difficult because they are lost in their world and can perseverate on favorite tops like dinosaurs, cars, insects, etc. and all of a sudden 20mins. goes by and no one else has said a word.
I like the character in this drama but it's hard to consider this a real take on a person with autism/aspergers. To be perfectly honest, I would believe his relationship more fully if he attended a support group and met a woman who has a similar disability and began dating her. But that's just my take on it.

I understand how this might be difficult to reconcile in a real life setting but I am friends with several adults who are on the high end of the autism spectrum/asperger who have worked at and managed to build fulfilling and meaningful relationships and families with individuals who seek connection through social relationships.
Oftentimes, it is a matter of adjustments and balancing one's strengths with the other's whilst providing much needed support in areas which are lacking. Many of the individuals on the high end of the autism spectrum are highly intelligent and are able to capture, learn and adjust their own behaviour in social settings over time. This doesn't necessarily always involve support groups or educational intervention, which by their nature help to skill up the individuals quicker.
The high functioning individual will always have their quirks but have been also shown to be able to adapt to circumstances due to their ability to grasp information at the intellectual level. The challenges and prejudices will continue throughout their life but they too can develop the resilience in character to be able to stand up to and overcome emotional/social issues and discrimination that they face.
This is purely observation and experience I have personally and in my workplace so I find that the drama itself isn't all that far-fetched in its premise. Though due to the content they wish to squeeze into the allocated timeframe, it is difficult to fully portray the full journey that Shi On would need take to develop a fully mature relationship with Yoon Seo. However, this too can be a journey the couple takes, as is often the case in real life.

Woodang:
You're equating his awkwardness and disability with an age, but it's not HIS age, so to term his relationship with a woman "abusive" is unfair. Socially he may seem like a teen "at best" to you but his mental capacity is beyond in years of an average adult by far.
If we follow your line of reasoning, someone who is in a relationship with another who has a low IQ (lower mental capacity), maybe one that's equivalent of a grade-schooler which many adults today qualify as, that be "abusive" to you, too. Again, if we follow your line of reasoning.
Social awkwardness doesn't mean that person IS a child. I've met brilliant people and not so brilliant people who've lacked social know-how. But the lack of social skills doesn't place them in a category with children, as you have done. And those in a relationship with the socially lacking do not deserve to be called "abusive", which you have done.
Shi-On may talk like a child (voice tone and innocence of remarks), but his thinking and behavior is mature. When faced with issues or problems, he thinks through them and finds a rational solution, one that would be best for all. This is more "mature" than other adults who, for example, look to alcohol or other substitute to solve their problems or who react to conflicts in what we would term "childish" ways instead of communication (ex. anger, passive aggression, unforgiveness, avoidance).
So on the surface, Shi-On may seem immature to some if you judge him by superficial standards, but if you look at his behavior and reactions to issues (ex. forgiving and facing his abusive father, a mother who abandoned him, and a bully from his childhood), he is more mature than people you would place in the "normal adults" category.

Thanks for the recap.
About the love storyline, I feel like the writer went slow because he was aware that the audience could reject the idea and run away. The fact that the (cute and adorable) romantic scene is a fantasy, is another way to stay in the safety zone. If the viewers are against the idea, well... This was a dream folks! And then backpedaling...
I hope that the cold feet will warm up for the last week: It's OK writer-nim: Nobody with a heart at the right place will leave the ship that late in the game. As for the others...
I liked the 4rth wall down line (actors can improve and are not always good when they begin). :P

Shi-on's concerns are really ripping my heart to shreds
; _ ;. I understand that he feels like he's not the best option--everyone has insecurity-but he's so wonderful.
He truly cares about her and he's extremely capable of taking care of himself and the one he loves. He grew up without both parents or his brother for crying out loud. Sure he had the director; with his high level of education he definitely had a lot to deal with by himself. Maybe I'm reading too much into his character but I feel like the other characters arent telling him what he needs to hear. He has accomplished SO MUCH already and he deserves a good relationship as much as anyone else.

Judging by the comments here and elsewhere, it seems like people do not want Si On and Yoon Seo together just because he is autistic. This show really does expose society's prejudices against people with disability, doesn't it? As much as we criticize the characters in the drama who looked at Si On differently and decided what he can do or not do, we fall pretty much into the same mould.
If Yoon Seo is my friend/sis/daughter, I will give her a prep talk, listing the positives and negatives about Si On:
Negatives(depending on how you see it)
1. Child like demeanor - voice tone and scamper like a child. If you can put up with people's stares, it's fine.
2. Simplistic way of looking at things - he sees and experience things differently like that of a child who is not colored by partiality or pressure to conform to a certain view. Not cynical.
3. Inability to read cues - you have to speak to him up straight. Can be frustrating or cute at times. However, it does not mean he cannot empathize with you or comfort you. You just have to tell him how you feel.
4. Takes things at face value - again it's the way he reads and interprets things presented to him. Rather than see it as a weakness, society could do more with less beating round the bush and saying things we don't mean.
5. Strange quirks, habits and interest - not too bothersome unless you find it terribly annoying. Leave him in the Gundam store while you go shopping. Best if you can't cook, just feed him kimbap.
6. Child-like - there is a vast difference between childish and childlike. Si On's childlike thinking makes his perspectives and insights refreshing and innocent as opposed to ignorant and gullible. In terms of taking care of himself, caring for others and thinking for others and self-awareness, Si On is more mature than many men out there.
Maturity does not always go with age and looks. Take for example 2 characters who might possibly face their last days - In Hae and Si On's Dad. Who is more mature? To me, it's In Hae hands down. She has the ability to think not just for herself but for others. Look at Si On's Dad who has been a immature, selfish clout his entire life and remains the same even when he knows he is dying.
Positives
1. He is a good person
2. He is kind, gentle and caring.
3. He can make you laugh.
4. He has a respectable job with good stable income. He can definitely provide for his family.
5. He wants to do his job well and has ambitions.
6. He is independent and takes care of himself well.
7. He is someone you can respect and respects you.
8. He loves children
9. He is attractive to you and he finds you physically attractive.
10. He loves you.
Now, I forgot. What is it again about Si On not being qualified to love Yoon Seo or be loved by her?

I think the focus on why CYS and PSO's relationship won't work out is focused too much on the fact that he is autistic. The struggles that the two go through has become issues that occur in every other couple. Him not being able to catch social cues is very common in many people. The level of understanding being different is also something that is more common then not among couples. Different way of thinking is inevitable because everyone is alike. Of course his physical countenance can't be helped. She will have to accept that. But then again, that is something that normal couples deal with too. But I mean CYS got lucky because despite JooWon is cute and sexy at the same time.
I thought In Hae talking about her being afraid of death was actually a positive signal to her chance at life. She has accepted that having her alive makes her sister happier and it isn't a sacrifice on her sisters' part. She will fight to live which will give her a higher outcome. Plus the prelude that Do Han will do the surgery as he is looking into the procedure.
