Podcast #18
Running time: 63:25
In which we:
- talk about our just-released ebook and Seattle meetup;
- revisit I Hear Your Voice with a tangent on Lee Bo-young’s impending marriage and what happens when actresses get married, the strengths and weaknesses of the drama, and how it fares as a legal show and a noona romance (12:40);
- very briefly touch on Sword and Flower (25:14);
- move on to Two Weeks, its solid pacing, Lee Jun-ki’s acting, and the chemistry with Park Ha-sun (26:30);
- discuss Master’s Sun, its handling of the paranormal, and the ways in which it was plotted well and not-so-well (37:55);
- talk about what worked for us about Good Doctor and what didn’t (47:21);
- quickly mention King’s Family and why it’s gone crazy (52:55);
- and wrap up with Suspicious Housekeeper (55:48).
Names mentioned: Lee Bo-young, Han Ga-in, Yeon Jung-hoon, Kim Hee-sun, Han Ji-hye, Lee Jun-ki, Park Ha-sun, Joo-won, Lee Yoon-ji, Choi Ji-woo

"YES. BUT YOU SHOULD HAVE LABORED."
Hahaha. That was exactly what I was thinking when I was listening to javabeans talk about IHYV. I was like... BUT BUT. girlfriday, aren't you gonna defend it? lol
I guess I'm just super protective of it because regardless of its flaw in the law or whatever, it got me right in the heart. I laughed, cried, and screamed in agony and cuteness over that show. I've had my share of Noona romance dramas but I've never liked them one bit. I guess you could call me a noona romance hater. :p Because I never thought the pairings could actually be realistic in the real world.
However, Park Su- Ha and Hye-Sung was really a match made in heaven. He wasn't the typical immature little boy. In fact, he was the mature one, the voice of reason- Hye-sung's rock and vice versa. Age didn't stand in the way. He was already mature beyond his years and grew to be a man for her. And she became more childlike in her faith for others. They both learned to hear, not only towards each other, but also the voices of others around them.
And, that's why I love this show to pieces. The strength of their bond is something you just can't take away. So I have no doubt their future is very bright. :)

Yay! This is the first ever podcast where I've watched majority of the dramas you've talked about.
IHYV - did not love it 7/10
MS - thought it was a little overrated 7/10
TW - I felt the same, it had such potential at the beginning but halfway through it lost my interest. 7/10
SaF - I loved the first half but the second half and the ending ruined it for me 7/10
GD - There were times it was boring but overall, as a human drama it delivered. And I just loved Ki Woong's cameo at the end, I keep rewatching it. 8/10
Thanks for the podcast :)

We actually started a Seattle kdrama meetup group and had a really great meeting Saturday. About 15 of us met at Lee Ga Tofu House & Grill to view the premier of Heirs. (Although most of us had already viewed it.
We had a great time visiting, making fun of really bad engrish and eating. I think I can speak for us all that we would love to have regula Dramabeans meetups.
If anyone one is interested, here's the link for the group

The awesomeness of the performance by Lee Chae-Mi as Seo Soo-Jin and all of her scenes with Lee Joon-Ki and the other adult cast members in Two Weeks should have tipped the scales to a score of 9/10.

I've been watching King's Family and it's just so therapeutic for me. I love it. It's like my crack drama. I literally just scream at my screen every time Subak is on. I seriously just love the grandma because she always talks about the Korean War and how it was nothing compared to what's going on in the family.

Yeah, the grandma's funny but I totally see my own grandma in her. She always talks about the olden days that nobody cares about, doesn't pull her weight around the house but nags at the daughter-in-law instead, and dotes too much on her own sons.

Egh hyo hyo hyo hyo...^^
Anyway, it's my crack drama too! And I don't even know why since I can't stand all the gold-diggers in there and I still don't get why Subak and mum are all pissy at Hobak for buying a flat. -.- Frequent use of the fast-forward button to the characters I like probably gets me through the madness.

Heartwarming was why I enjoyed "Good Doctor" so very much. But yes, obvious is definitely the word. Ha. I thought it was written well--elementary--but well, so I can't complain. Joowon was definitely the one-man show (his baby voice did start to throw me a little though, ha). Moon Chaewon was alright. She was endearing enough, but the show could've switched in another actress and I wouldn't have minded much. Okay, if it was Choi Kanghee, then yes. Hahaha. But yeah, enjoyable show.
These past few shows weren't exceptionally stellar, but I do think they'll be better than the dramas currently airing and those gearing up to air.
Guess we'll see.

LOL! I has a great time listening to the podcast and find myself agreeing to a whole load of things. Especially King's Family. I originally started to watch it because of Lee Yoon Ji, I quite liked her in Dream High and King 2 Hearts. But, 7-8 episodes in, I find myself wondering whether the writer(s) is high on something. There's normal, crazy, out-of-whack and completely not making any sense. I, too, question how these people are even related in the first place. I mean, really, they should get a DNA test to see if they were really related. Still, Imma keep at it coz it... I dunno why as of yet, I just feel like I had to see the end of this. Alright, 8 episodes down... 42 to go...

(And Grandpa's are even like half in progress...)
Anyway, loved listening to you (as always). Thanks.
I'm also busy reading your book. I agree, it's nice to bundle the things together and have one reference source. I did pick up a lot during my drama waching and Dramabeans based years, however there is still new or more detailed info in the book, like this Hallyu thing... So, good job!
I started the King's Family, but dropped it after 15minutes. Couldn't get into it. Then watched 1st episode of Would You Give Love Away and found it much better. Anyone watched more and can say whether it's worth continuing?
And anything about the Potato Star? Though I guess that's more for the next podcast.
Thanks again for this podcast.
PS I don't know why but whenever you say Avergina, I hear Angelina... and that gives a totally different picture than an average plain girl :--)

I had a great time listening to the podcast at work. LOL!
I'm still in TMS-mourning train so I haven't started watching The Heirs, but Secret & MTT are awesome shows. Please watch them :D
King's Family, I agree with everything Javabeans said, it's too crazy right now. I watched it for Lee Yoon-ji, but omaigad how are they even family in the first place. A Hundred Year Inheritance was a bit better at being family lol And A Little Love Never Hurts didn't start well either, so weekend drama slots are going to be empty for awhile for me :)

Currently trying to work it off by watching So Ji-sub and Gong Hyo-jin's previous works that I haven't already seen (started with Biscuit Teacher Star Candy), but also rewatching MS itself, and will probably be gushing about it for a couple of Friday OTs yet.

Okay, where was that Korean drama class when I was going to UW? I feel cheated, lol.
I'm not surprised that people in Seattle were so enthusiastic about making meet-ups a regular thing. There's a huge Asian population in Seattle, and with that comes a lot of exposure to Asian culture and to the products of those cultures, including media.

I agree what you guys pointed out about how Lee Jun Ki sometimes tend to over-act a little bit in his previous roles and I remember reading in an interview of him that even he admits so because he just really enjoys the art of acting.
I haven't seen Two Weeks yet but I REALLY want to now (at the moment, I'm watching Arang and The Magistrate, which is, I know; very late) and I'm up for an action drama. :D :D
I also agree with what you said about how in I Hear Your Voice, we didn't really get a clear explanation of how Su-Ha got his mind reading ability, and the fact that he lost it but then he regained it back just didn't sell to me.
On the other hand, I don't ever plan on watching Good Doctor (well.... maybe I would, in a couple years or something when I'm really really really really bored) because I've never been a sucker for medical dramas unless it has an intriguing plot with a bit of mystery in it or something like that that makes it stand out from the norm. The storyline of Good Doctor really come out as boring to me and I've read the recaps for some of the episodes on Dramabeans, and I'm just going to pass it for now.
Anyway, thanks for the podcast! :)

Thanks for the podcast, guys! Master's Sun will go down as one of my best watches of the year, but it's almost astonishing to think how much of that would be impossible if not for the OTP. It was quite the experience to read along on DB, too - not just because of the comments, but because so far in 2013, it (and IHYV, to a lesser extent) are the things that have come closest to turning into crack. For me, anyway - there was definitely a stretch in the middle where I was cussing every other day of the week for not being Wednesday/Thursday.
I totally agree with you about Lee Jun-ki too - he needs to be restrained to be great, because I adored him here but objectively, Arang's a finer performance from him. And I couldn't get why Park Ha-sun was being hated on either, she was good as present-day In-hye even if I didn't really feel it from her in a couple of the flashbacks.
And I haven't watched past ep 8 of King's Family, but I do agree that half that family is batshit, and the eldest sister is the worst of the lot (and Kim Hye-sook! now starring as Korea's Worst Mom).
Heirs recaps are going to be quite the experience thanks to the casting, I call it now - we only have two up and already we've got mini-comment wars, factions forming (ok, maybe one faction against everyone else) and all.

oh, and on kdrama not being great with magic stories - I noticed that some of those dramas failed on the 'establish your rules and present your info' front, which led to endings of 'eh, what, how are you allowed to do this!'. Cases in point: Gu family book, Rooftop Prince, to a lesser extent QIHM (for the ending alone - it did a great job of staying somewhat logically consistent with its own rules up to that point). But I had no idea that this was a trend!

Yay new BeansCast!!! Granted, you are not alone with the headsmacking over the courtroom scenes in 'IHYV.' With my gazillion+ years in the legal field (and a fair amount of experience covering AsiaPac issues), in this instance they were particularly cringeworthy. Entertaining, but not realistic enough so it took away from my viewing enjoyment a tiny touch. But then again, I can't even watch American lawyer-based dramas without having to reach for the aspirin bottle....
Thanks for the laughs! :D

I HAVE notice how ocd organized your site is, and so are your podcasts! I really liked the Two Weeks discussion, I didn't finish the last 2 eps because I could not reconcile that everything (accidents, misunderstandings, accidents, missed opportunities, accidents, etc., etc.) happened in TWO WEEKS. My comments as I was listening to the podcast:
1. Once again, congrats on your book. It's definitely a great point of reference because even though I've read through most of the site and so have been able to understand most of the concepts you've talked about implicitly, I was still able to gain a better understanding. So thanks for your hard work. :)
2. I feel sad that I haven't been to a single DB Meetup since they sound like so much fun. I just hope there's another chance for it in NYC.
3. IHYV and Two Weeks were great dramas; I definitely liked both of them a lot but yeah, neither of them had the quality of OMG I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT EPISODE. They were both comfortable, endearing, satisfying dramas without the addictive quality.
4. I didn't really like Master's Sun. The only great thing it had going for it were the characters themselves, romantic chemistry, and the comedy portions but not the plot, the story of the week, nor the super confusing we-must-separate-from-each-other. Even after JB tried to explain the logic behind it, I was like okay...and then promptly forgot about it and went back to being confused again. I also didn't like that So Ji Sub's character didn't die....it's not that I'm sadistic; I just felt the drama might have become ten times more interesting if that happened, lol. Sorry JB. :P
5. I'm shocked to hear that you guys find Wang Family very crazy. I really didn't get that feeling....I mean, I found only Mom and Subak insane because they seemed to be doing incomprehensible things but the other characters I can follow and understand (I've only watched until ep 8). So now I'm honestly confused because I generally agree with you guys and here it feels like we may have watched two different dramas, lol.

I'm on episode 10 and the hero is still quite charismatic and cool (for now) even if he's stringing both girls along. I thought the heroine liked him since the time he helped her park her car and when he started giving Daebak advice? And I get the feeling that he's intrigued/amused by her.
Either way, I think they are pretty harmless and sane compared to the some of other characters. Apart from getting dating advice from a middle-schooler...don't think it's advisable for any sane person to do that.

JB - I wanted to like him, but I don't know whether it is an acting flaw or a writing flaw that makes Sang-nam come off as rather bland. Too 'perfect' (I'll take a well-executed asshole over this, any day), and that's really rather boring here - like you, the heroine dangling after him is something I don't understand at all.

I just finished watching episode 10 of King's Family. Every time the mom and Subak say something, I feel like ripping my hair out. I especially hate Subak's line, "I was a part of the Miss Korea pageant." It is as if it entitles her to have everything her way. And the mother, I can't believe her. She doesn't even realize she has been mistreating her second daughter, Hobak, all this time. She is so disillusioned.
As for the other characters, I am interested in how the Gwangbak-Sangnam-Youngdal love triangle is going to play out. I am expecting Gwangbak-Sangnam to be together in the end anyways, but hoping for more from them. I am predicting Sedal is going to having an "affair" with the hotel lady, and Minjung is the father of Miho. Just my strong speculations...
Last words: I feel so bad for the dad, Minjung and Hobak. I want all the best for them.

So true about the mother and Subak, really want to rip their hair and eyes out for mistreating and ganging up on Hobak all these years. I kind of relate because I'm also not the favorite daughter in my family. I was beaten and slapped by my mom and did the household chores while my sister had the easier time, going out with her friends. The reasoning behind was that mom wanted me become more responsible coz I'm older. I resented it for years and sort of build a wall between me and mom but now I realized the experience really made me stronger, more capable and responsible. So sad that I'm still quite hesitant hugging her but I'm providing for all her needs now that she's old.

It's been a while since the last podcast! So happy to see this up.
Anyways, I have been thinking about watching I Hear Your Voice, Master's Sun, and Good Doctor since people have been all over those dramas recently. For some reasons, I don't feel like watching them even though people keep on recommending them to me. After listening to this, I decided not to watch them. lol. I'm kinda glad I didn't watch them. Hmmm...
I've seen Two Weeks and really liked it. Like you've said, it's very consistent. Dramas tend to change course as they progress but Two Weeks was really solid from beginning to end. I understand what you ladies mean when you say it's better than an 8 yet seems 2% lacking to be a 9. I like how the villains can outsmart Tae San or the police sometimes then they make a comeback or when awesome plans were made only to be smashed by a better one from the opposite side. But yeah, the villains were rather weak. I love Boss Moon's ending though. Best part. HAHAHHA. Can't look at corns without laughing now. Oh, and the assassin guy's acting was really good. And Soo Jin, that girl. T^T
I'm currently watching Housekeeper too. It's not so intense and I totally hate the Dad. I can't believe how he can be like that towards his FOUR children. Argh. But I'm still watching. At least to know whether she's a robot or not. :D
Thank you for the podcast. I really enjoyed it!

the part you talked about "when are you going to have children?"...
my husband and i got married at the age of 33, and at our wedding reception - everyone was asking "so when are you going to have a baby?" and i had to respond "we JUST got married..." (helllooo!!)
so asian, that thing. and yes, we had a kid, she's now 20. but 4 years after we got married, omg.
residual pressures from the homeland (our parents' generation)...

Thanks for the podcast. Now I'm going to have to get over my technologically challenged self and figure out how to download your podcast in my wee Nano (yep, almost a decade old but still works).
Still have TMS syndrome. So, I'm watching Ghost now to get over it, and will move on to The Greatest Love, maybe Cain and Abel and then Pasta. Or maybe i should just rewatch TMS all over again....what the heck is wrong with me?
I did start watching Heir/The Inheritor or whatever it's being called on Dramafever. But my Dramafever app doesn't work right on my tablet. Everytime I get a notification it freezes. So, I'm probably skipping a lot of the Heir scenes when I go back to watch it.
