More potential delays for the troubled Thrice Married Woman

javabeans: Okay, Thrice Married Woman. More delays? The show is asking for more time from the station, because, uh, it can’t get its shit together. Otherwise known as casting. In fact it’s hard to tell where they even are with the casting process because there’s so much news about this show, and every actor it’s considering and rejecting and not-rejecting-after-all and oops-rejected-actually.

girlfriday: It’s a strange case of where buzz actually does you wrong, because you’re going from “Highly anticipated drama of the fall” to… “Er, what’s wrong with this show and why can’t it find a cast?”

javabeans: Yes, the one thing it has going for it is the prestige of its writer Kim Soo-hyun (Childless Comfort, Life is Beautiful, My Man’s Woman…) but you know it’s a bad sign when your pre-production news cycle starts to recall nothing more than Poseidon. Or City Conquest.

girlfriday: It’s already being labeled a “troubled production,” though who knows where the trouble really lies. The one thing we do know is that the list of actors who drop the show is longer than the ones that sign on.

javabeans: Is the problem that the actresses “turn it down” (as the reports say) or that the producers are unwilling to cast them (which is the implication)?

girlfriday: My guess is that they get rejected, but who knows. Maybe the writer and director are so harsh that they send all the actresses running and crying.

javabeans: When they nixed the Han Ga-in casting possibility, I thought it was understandable. She’s a huge name, but not known for her acting prowess, and Kim Soo-hyun seems like the picky type. But then they also dropped Song Ji-hyo and now Kim Sarang, which makes me think, Uh, you’re casting the same actress over and over anyway. What did you expect.

girlfriday: Right? Just pick one.

javabeans: They’re all the same type in the end. And if not them, then why not just pick someone you’ve already worked with? Su Ae might be free. Or Nam Sang-mi, she can just go from one weekend show to the next.

girlfriday: Hahaha. You’re the lead in the weekend drama. Which one? ALL OF THEM.

javabeans: Well, Thrice Married Woman is slated for the post-Goddess of Marriage slot so we know she’d be free. Maybe dead on her feet, but contractually available! At least she could avoid this whole weird casting-audition-rehearsal wild goose chase this show seems to be stuck in. Which is all the stranger for the fact that dramaland shows just don’t operate this way. Even with star writers at the helm.

girlfriday: Yeah, my question is, if this is what you really wanted to do (and clearly it is), then why’d you agree to air in November? ‘Cause they’re already asking for more lead-in time before broadcast, and now Goddess of Marriage is like, “Uh, we’re not extending.” Which is reasonable since it’s not really their problem, but now SBS is sort of in a pickle without pre-planned specials to fill the gap.

javabeans: Honestly, they could probably commission a short drama or two and produce that sucker before this show is cast, although that would be essentially just conjuring up filler meant to be burned off.

girlfriday: It would still be faster than casting this drama.

javabeans: If they really wanted to go for ratings, they should just air reruns of Heirs in the weekend slot till Thrice Married rolls around, because yes please.

girlfriday: Twice the Lee Min-ho is just a good solution for all things in life, really.

javabeans: It looks like Lee Jia’s name was in the mix too, but it was the usual confused “Yes she is” and “No I’m not” runaround.

girlfriday: Why do all her casting stories go that way?

javabeans: Do you think that’s just Yonsama’s management philosophy? Mystery, always!

girlfriday: There’s mystery, and then there’s turning on a fog machine and waving your hands about, going, “OoooOOoooooO!”

javabeans: Mostly she just ends up looking really fickle. Although in this conversation, I don’t think she’s the worst offender in the fickle category.

girlfriday: I think we just put our finger on why the heroine was thrice married.

javabeans: We’ll have to wait till the show airs to find out for sure, which means… we may never find out.

I heard a rumor that it is Kim Soo Hyun who is dropping the actresses like flies because they can't act. So it's possible that the Production company is picking the actresses because of their name recognition but when they go in for the read Kim Soo Hyun refuses them. There are rumors the first script reading was an audition and all the women mentioned so far has failed Kim Soo Hyun's high standards. Apparently although Ji Hyo was offered , she never went in for a read and was probably the only one not axed by the writer.

If this is true , I am glad that there is still a writer who cares about quality but at the same time they really need to nail down a lead already.

That's the rumour going around the internet from what I've read too. Hmm...plausible but who knows. To the potential viewers its just a mess.

WOW, an idol that can't act? How did that happen?

We may end up with some unknowns in this drama - which may actually be a GOOD thing.

What idol? None of the three women who have been linked to this role are idols. (That said, I don't think Han Ga In is a good actress, non-idol status notwithstanding.)

I sometimes use the term "idol" a bit too broadly to mean any big name and/or popular actor.

So let me get this right... There were no real auditions (because of the big stars involved?) but instead they cast people and hold script readings, and these are used as auditions because it's a Kim Soo Hyun drama, and she wants to check if the actresses suit her?

SBS must be having headaches with this drama behind the drama. Anthony's ghost must be laughing somewhere.
This is getting ridiculous and frankly embarrassing. If as a writer you want to meddle with the casting process then be a pro and use your list of contacts (because you have some, right?). Or let the pros do the work.
I would like to see more Lee Ji Ah on my screen but I don't want for her to be part of a train wreck. Dodge the bullet, woman.
I'm all for reruns of Heirs. You know, that little drama which managed to wrap its cast 6 months before shooting... Specials too. Each channel should have a few specials on its shelves in case of WW3. It's like ramyun: Always useful.
If there wasn't so many people and jobs on the line, I would say drop the sucker SBS and teach humility to s/o. Yes, I'm mean like that.

Ha my thoughts exactly

or maybe this is King of Dramas But in real life.
This company is either trying to take the spot which another small company (Like Anthony) wants for the spot so they come up with a small plot. SBS likes it and goes for it and then we get all this drama. About the cast maybe the small company and this one are fighting to get them cast in their drama. :) Like what they did with the actor who ended up with Oh Ji-Eun in that show. :)

Just saying or maybe they actually have some genuine problems.

Please note what I mentioned above was a joke I really have no idea about all these delays. So don't even think of using them as rumors because I just made that up. etc..... and I don't want to be sued for multiple things ie slander, abuse etc...

me too. she;s not the greatest actress out there but she is endearing, for me.

heard that the writer is like the nazi in thr k-ent business, where she wants everything the way she planned it to be, from the casting, the setting, the plot, what type and range of emotion to show. I can understand that, as a writer your work is like you baby, you would not one anyone to mess with it. but there is such a thing as being TOO controlling, because come one, meddling with props is kinda well TTTOOO controlling.

But i hope this drama gets its bearing, cause frankly they are giving some serious whiplash with the actress changing left and right...

agreed it ok the be demanding but not to the point of sinking your own boat and everyone elses too by messing around like this. It also very arrogant on the writers part, who showing no consideration or repect to the rest of the production staff like the director, who if good enough should be able to get a good perfromance from any halfway decent actress, after all that what he gets paid for.

The writer is not wrong.

I don't know why some people are saying the writer is being cruel and rude. How so?

Almost everytime actors do an audition to get cast, so they can be dropped or casted. Those actors know how KSH is and her fame.

The actors know their acting can be lacking or that it won't please KSH, so why they did accept and go? If they are turned down it isn't just the PD and Writer fault, it is the actor fault too.

There is also many times the actor gets cast because his company pulls them in even if they can't act at all.

Maybe HGI thought her star power could make her be cast and not turned down after her successful movie and Kdrama Moon Sun and for her connections on Kdrama industry, but I'm glad there is a writer that focus on the acting and not star power.

Think about it, KSH is picky with the actors, if they cast an actor and this actor fails to show what KSH really wanted to that character to show... and people not understand its feelings or point of view and not connect with the public, it is a big problem, more so the main not being able to do it. So I think she has to be picky with her leading leads that will make the show a success or a fail...

When the drama does not well, who is the first blamed for it?? The writer. So to keep her name and reputation I think she has all rigths to be picky with the actors who will put her script alive.

I don't think the writer is wrong to have high standards or to want to find the very best person for the part as opposed to just a big name; however if she wanted to go the audition route (as rumours say) then maybe they should have started this whole casting process a lot sooner. These shows are often scheduled months in advance so it's not like they didn't know when the show was supposed to start airing. Quality is important but now that the air date is fast approaching, it will be harder for them to afford to be picky because they'll need to finalize a cast soon in order to start filming. If they had started this whole process sooner (I bet the writer had prospective actresses in mind for the part), then they could have taken their time and weeded potentials out until they found whoever the writer's looking for but now that the pressure's on, they might have to compromise. It's unfortunate but true.

I'm not blaming the writer completely for this - I'm sure there are a lot more people involved (and possibly competing visions for the work in the production team/channel) - but the show has a deadline it needs to meet and the production crew, including the writer has a responsibility to try to get things sorted out for them to start filming in a timely manner. If they need to postpone filming, that costs SBS both time and money and it messes with their future projects' schedules as well. I am not blaming any one person for this as it sounds like there's some serious issues going on behind the scenes but all of these people are professionals and they've signed contracts and agreed to have things done by a certain time so they need to try to honour that. That's all people expect.

+1 to liz's comment.

The writer may or may not be the 1st one to be blamed when a drama doesn't go well, but when a writer's projects go well time and again, she gains a reputation for doing good work.

This writer, KSH, has the credentials and the clout to vat her actresses. Why wouldn't she exercise that clout? Cos she does have a reputation to protect.

Frankly, I'm happy with her vetoes (Not counting Ji Hyo).

I don't think she vetoed Ji Hyo. The rumor is that Ji Hyo was in the talks but that was all and she didn't end up even doing the read for the drama. Most of these actresses got axed after failing the script reading.

"When the drama does not well, who is the first blamed for it?? The writer."
I politely disagree.
The audience and the persons who take the decisions are perfectly able to tell the difference between crappy acting and/or bad script.
Obviously, there is a conflict between the writer and the production company or the channel. Hard to say what's happening exactly and who's at fault (everyone involved, I suspect). That said, who picks who and how should have been decided when they all signed the deal so this kind of mess wouldn't happen. Also, deadlines exist and confidentiality clauses too (at least a minimum). If the drama is delayed or loses money or even worst, never happens, what's the good in being so "troublesome"? The crisis gives a bad image, pretty amateurish to that production.
Finally, the script must be the cream of the cream if the usual way of casting people can't apply to it. >.>

Agreed, blaming the writers for bad acting doesn't make sense. We judge writers for their writing and actors for their acting and directors for directing etc etc.

If she is this picky which is not a bad thing, she should have done this so call script reading audition a long time ago. It doesn't take a genius to figure out before hand that Han Ga-in is not high quality actress.

All this casting drama is actually making me more eager to see this just to see how it turns out. I really wish they'd stuck with Song Ji-hyo, because I love her. But by now, I wish they'd just pick someone. Do they have any cast finalized for this? Do they have a male lead yet?

This isn't what Ha Ji Won is known for, but knowing her acting skills, she basically can pull anything off.
If I were the writer, I wouldn't think twice about all these actresses and cast her if it bothered me so much. But then again, Ha Ji Won hardly accepts any roles unless they really appeal to her. Maybe that's why she becomes so immersed in her characters.

I seriously don't understand the point of short selecting actresses that have never been popular for their acting talents. The thing is, if you wanted a good actress who can act, court one that you know would most likely pass the audition! Its like they're taking liberties by rejecting (as per rumors) actresses that were never their standards anyway. They have no time, and in the meanwhile they're screwing over either SBS or GoM.

I just hope this one doesn't end up with an actress even less capable in the acting department than KSR or HGI. Or worse yet... a weak script.

um, i don't blame ksh for these problems for casting entirely. However, writers should also have an idea of who they would like to play their character. Having all of these top actresses come in and get the ax is 1.) counter-productive to the drama's development 2.) inefficient for EVERYONE 3.) discouraging for other actresses 4.) very bad for the drama's reputation and 5.) ruins relationships with the actresses that have been axed. I'm sure she didnt think they were bad actresses, just not fit for the character. I really hope they come to their senses and find an actresses that they're 90% sure would be a great fit.

I'm always amazed by how much clout Korean drama writers seem to wield. If you're "merely" a script writer here in the US, the best you can expect in the way of influence in the casting process, is the role of "casting consultant". Am I right? Of course if you have "big Kahoona" status, like Bellasario, or Shonda Rhimes (who fulfill the roles of writer, director AND producer), it's a whole different ball of wax.

I was somewhat disappointed to hear that I'd not be seeing Kim Sarang after such a long absence from Dramaland. I loved her in Secret Garden, and thought she did a pretty good job in the role of Yoon Sool. It'll be interesting to see how the casting issues of this show play out. Oh, to be a fly on the wall (one that understands Korean) during some of the production meetings for this drama....

It is hilarious to see you guys suggest Nam Sang Mi act in this problematic drama after her exhausting portrayal as Song Ji Hye in Goddess of Marriage.

I know it was a joke...hahaha but really funny to see the witty article above.

I think nam sang mi wants to rest well after the rigorous five months of shooting on the fly and shedding buckets of tears, getting verbally and mentally abused by her co-characters, and getting slammed by audience who dislike her character.

Plus im not surprised to see that GoM does not want to extend further.
I suspect one of the main reasons is that Lee Tae Ran has already started on another drama at KBS. It would be greatly unfair for her to endure two hectic shooting schedules for another two weeks.

And maybe some GoM actors have already lined up projects in October?

What about Jo Yeo Jung or Jung Yoo Mi?
These two actresses may be up for that demanding role?

I think the production company needs to get on the same page as the writer, why keep selecting actresses that they know the writer is going to reject. As for the writer anticipating this beforehand, I don't know, if she is rejecting people so obviously now she might have previously made it known what she wanted and was assured a good actress and then the production tried to pull one over on her. I wouldn't even call the writer's standards high either since all the actresses considered were blah anyway. I don't know, I think there is more to the situation since most other production teams would course correct by now.

Well, This isn't just a problem for this drama. But, also for potential leading actors. Better do hurry-picking before gets cancel like other drama which got cancelled. Okay, this writer makes lots of drama hits, but, there are many other options that you can choose.

For the potential actors (Song Chang Ui, Ha Suk Jin, and Jo Han Sun), maybe it doesn't look solid. Just look the example for Pots of Gold's Actors. It's a good example. I Hope the team production, including writer do something solid and hurry. Because, if not, maybe it'll affects the rating.
