Master’s Sun: Episode 10

This is a great episode. Our couple spends the hour circling around the giant pink elephant—er, dinosaur—in the room, and tossing out all manner of strange ways in which to keep their relationship the same… despite the fact that they each know it will never be the same. Because that’s what happens when you close your eyes and pretend you don’t see the thing that’s staring you in the face, be it animal or mineral, dead or alive, love or hate.

EPISODE 10 RECAP

Gong-shil picks up her sun necklace from the trashcan ghost just in time to run and meet Joong-won as he returns from his business trip… with a brand new bride-to-be at his side (played by dramaland fiancée specialist Seo Hyo-rim).

He squarely ignores her, and it’s the fiancée who asks about the strange employee who keeps watching them as they walk away. Joong-won tells her to stop looking back and hurry up, because it’s killing him.

He finally decides to turn back and asks how she was for a week, admitting that it was death for him. What, you can’t say stuff like that after bringing home a fiancée!

She just looks up with her puppy eyes: “Are you really getting married?” He thinks back to ghost wife asking him if he didn’t want to know how Gong-shil felt about him. He looks at her and mutters, “What secret? I can see it all.”

She wonders what he sees, and he simply calls it the thing he’s afraid of, as much as she’s afraid of ghosts. She’s no dummy, and asks straight out if he’s getting married to avoid her. He knocks her down a peg, making it seem ridiculous that he would choose to marry because of her, and leaves her believing the same.

When he rejoins the fiancée outside his office, she reaches up to take his arm, and he stops her in mid-air. He tells her not to touch him, unless she’s basically about to fall on her face. Pffft. How gallant you are.

Kang Woo and his chatty friend see the interaction and wonder at the strangeness of keeping your fiancée from touching you.

Kang Woo finds Gong-shil sitting in the stairwell, clearly upset. She admits that she’s floored by the news, especially because it’s so sudden, and Kang Woo asks about Joong-won returning the night he was supposed to leave for China.

Gong-shil still doesn’t know what happened, but realizes that the figure she saw walking away must’ve been Joong-won. She gasps—did he meet the ghost wife while she was possessed? What did she tell him? And she remembers now, his remark about her secret. “She told him my secret… that I like him.” Now it’s Kang Woo’s turn to reel.

Secretary Kim asks Joong-won if it’s okay to use an engagement this way, and worries that Gong-shil looked shocked and hurt. Joong-won says it’s the calculation he came to here, *points at head* and acknowledges that the reason Gong-shil couldn’t figure into his calculations was because she was in a different place.

Secretary Kim says still, he has to tell her… that he isn’t really going to get married. Wut. Your sham wedding is a SHAM? That’s just too much with the literal metaphors. Joong-won refuses to do anything of the sort, and says that the reason he can’t read is because that’s a problem with his heart. He only wants to use the thing he knows isn’t broken—his head—and ignore the rest.

Ever the smart one, Secretary Kim wonders if maybe because Gong-shil can see souls (I like that he uses “spirit/soul” for ghost here), she isn’t the person to see Joong-won clearly and help him. Joong-won says he’ll go see her when he’s a ghost then, and stalks off.

Gong-shil sighs (still with Kang Woo by her side) that Joong-won is definitely telling her to get lost, but frets that she can’t be without him—he’s her one and only ghost-proof shelter and there’s no one else like him in the world.

Kang Woo asks if she isn’t hurt that Joong-won is obviously placing someone else by his side just to show her that she isn’t a woman to him. She guesses that Kang Woo sees her as a Candy to Joong-won’s white knight, but she says in her world, she’s just a ghost radar and he’s her emergency shelter. “I can’t be a Candy.”

She goes to see Joong-won, who crosses his arms and waits for her reaction. But she startles him by smiling and giving her congratulations for his engagement, and apologizing for being so surprised earlier. Ha, I love his WTF face.

She says that that he’s about to become someone else’s home sweet home, she knows that being her emergency shelter is asking too much, but couldn’t he leave her a little space, like maybe the basement?

He reminds her that he hates sweet things, so she changes her tack: “Then hurry up and have a son.” LOL, I love the leap, assuming that his DNA would produce ghost-proof spawn.

But it’s also so far gone on the fake congratulatory ladder that he sees through it, and calls her out for doing all this to cover up her secret. She asks if the ghost wife told him, but he says he declined to hear it. “Aren’t you grateful?” She shakes her head, saying that it’s not really that big a deal.

He points out that he didn’t need to hear the secret anyway, since she’s being sooooo obvious right now, and says that her stiff-upper-lip congratulatory words are straight out of the Candy playbook (which he indicates by calling her “that famous girl” and gesturing at his invisible pigtails, ha).

But she holds her head up and tells him he’s got it all wrong—the secret was that she likes someone else. “I like sweet things.” His face falls. She adds that she particularly hates rude assholes like him, and he just grits his teeth and says he’s grateful that he isn’t her style.

She declares that she’s leaving before he tells her to get lost, and he shouts after her, “Wait! Get lost!” Had to get the last word in, didn’t you? He watches her go and mutters to himself, “Why of all excuses did you have to bring Kang Candy?” To give you a taste of your own medicine, that’s what!

Gong-shil gets called to the VP’s office, where Aunt shows off the engagement present that the bride’s family sent over, trying to make it clear that there’s no room for her in Joong-won’s life anymore.

She goes off on this metaphor about Joong-won being the vase, as in too expensive for her to touch. But all Gong-shil sees is the spooky ghost face floating inside, and she warns Aunt and Uncle not to keep calling it special, because it’s really just a thing that was used to pour water, and they’ll make it haughty. HA.

I love that she’s talking about the ghost inside, but all Aunt hears is insults at her metaphor. It doesn’t get any better when Gong-shil tells them they have to break it, and Aunt panics, “Are you saying you’re going to break the engagement?”

Gong-shil swears that she already congratulated Joong-won on his marriage, and that she’s talking about the vase, but that goes about as well as you’d expect. Unni comes crying after hearing that she got called to the VP’s office, and asks if they shoved an envelope of money at her, and Gong-shil sighs that everyone must see her as a Candy.

Joong-won gets called in next, and Aunt asks if he’s going to send Gong-shil away now that he’s getting married. He says no, and admits freely that he got himself a fiancée in order to keep a safe distance from her. Aunt: “Will she not leave?”

Joong-won: “I won’t send her away. I can’t not see her.” Now that he has a safe distance, he plans to keep her around for as long as he wants. Aunt gapes, while Uncle fist-pumps.

Joong-won turns his attention to the vase, wondering if there’s a ghost inside, and tells them not to wave their money around in front of Gong-shil, because she’s not one to be scared by things like that.

Yi-ryung meets some high school friends who ask if Gong-shil is really dating the CEO of Kingdom. She says it’s preposterous and he’s way out of her league, but the friends argue that they totally thought it was fitting for Big Sun, who was always smart, pretty, and popular. Yi-ryung fumes, as usual.

Joong-won goes to check on Gong-shil, and asks if anything followed her out of the vase. She says no, but calls it a dangerous thing that should be broken. He wonders why she didn’t come see him, since he agreed to leave the basement free for her.

She says it’s because the person she likes might misunderstand. He’s annoyed that she’s insisting it’s Kang Candy, and she tells him about a manhwa she read once, about a wolf who liked a goat so much that instead of eating it, it almost starves to death.

Gong-shil: “To live, you have to see food as food, not as a goat you like. Isn’t that stupid? I won’t do something like that.” He asks, appalled, if that makes her the wolf and him the goat, and she nods. “So stop asking the wolf if it likes the goat.”

He asks what about the goat in the story? She says the goat likes the wolf too, and so it tells the wolf to eat him. Joong-won’s eyes widen, “That goat is crazy!” Ha.

He walks away, and she says to herself, “Would the wolf really eat the goat when it likes him?” She sits down with a long sigh, caressing the sun necklace she’s been hiding in her hands the whole time. Joong-won buries his head in his hands like a little kid, wondering if he should’ve let the ghost wife tell him the secret so he knew for sure, suddenly feeling less confident.

Kang Woo comes by to ask Secretary Kim about Joong-won’s engagement, not knowing what to report to Daddy Joo. Secretary Kim hesitates, but then tells him the truth: the whole thing is a business arrangement.

A flashback to China reveals that his fiancée proposed the engagement as a cover so she could take control of her family’s company. Business-wise, it was mutually beneficial, and so the sham wedding was on.

Secretary Kim says it’ll likely be over in a week, so there’s no need for Daddy Joo to change his itinerary for it. Kang Woo worries about Gong-shil, but Secretary Kim tells him that he can’t be the one to tell her before Joong-won does.

It seems that Aunt is going to be today’s ghost victim, which is a nice break from having to introduce new characters just for an episode. She grows increasingly fond of the vase, deciding that it’s just like a classic scholar—refined, gentlemanly—and so unlike her husband, who seems even more oafish than usual. And of course the ghost trapped inside is a pretty-faced Joseon scholar.

That night she sleeps with the vase on her nightstand, and in her dreams she follows the sound of a flute to find the scholar calling her to him. But when she reaches out to touch him, he vanishes into smoke.

She wakes up even more perturbed by her husband’s ill-refined bed manners, and snaps at him to go sleep elsewhere, in a hurry to get back to her dream.

That night, Gong-shil asks Kang Woo for the key to the VP’s office, to go find the vase ghost. He offers to come along, and Secretary Kim spots them together. So he goes right to Joong-won and as he says goodnight he wonders super loudly if he should give Gong-shil a ride, and decides that Kang Woo will do it.

Joong-won: “He said that for me to hear. I didn’t hear it.” Seconds later he’s in Gong-shil’s office, but she isn’t there.

She creeps into Uncle VP’s office with Kang Woo at her heels, shaking like a leaf in fear. She offers up her arm if he’s scared, and he puts his arm around her instead, deciding it’s manlier this way.

He asks if she isn’t scared, and if this is why she was in hiding for so long. She says that it was easier that way, but being around Joong-won has changed things for her. Kang Woo sighs, “Joo Joong-won gives you something I can never give you.”

He suggests that she try living without him for a week, and then if she ends up being able to live without him… “Then don’t go back to him.” Aw.

They head out in better spirits, and plan to stop for a late-night dinner on their way home. As Joong-won rounds the corner and spots them, she offers Kang Woo her arm, and he links his arm in hers as they walk away.

Yi-ryung shows up looking for Kang Woo (I do love how transparent she is) and finds the Dooly doll on his desk. Kang Woo is still making his night rounds, and stops cold when he feels someone or something nearby.

He tells himself that he has to learn to face ghosts if he’s ever going to make it through a dinner date with Gong-shil, and bravely turns around… and out pops Yi-ryung with a BOO! He’s so scared he covers his face with his fists, which of course she just finds ever more adorable.

When she asks him to dinner (with the threat that if he doesn’t go, she’ll tell the reporter she’s meeting tomorrow that he’s her boyfriend) he tells her she can come along on his date with Gong-shil.

So she leans in and kisses him in the chest, leaving a bright pink lipstick mark on his shirt. She tells him he can go ahead and show Gong-shil how they match. Well, she is creative. Moments later, he’s calling Gong-shil to call off their date.

Gong-shil stops in when she sees Joong-won’s still in his office, though he frightens her half to death when he sneaks up behind her like a ghost. He says she’d like it if he were a ghost because then she could have him all to herself, but she corrects him—he’d be the hanger-on if he were dead, because she’s really popular with ghosts.

“They see me as a really bright sun.” Joong-won: “I’m not a ghost, so why am I like this?” Hee.

He decides that maybe she should be a Candy after all, and offers to buy her an apartment or a car, or something to make her ordinary and their relationship more common. “That way I can send you away with certainty. If I know the end, I’m not afraid. If I go into your world and become the only person in it… I can’t tell you to get lost.”

He begs her to just be a Candy like everyone else and points to his head again, wanting to keep it all in there. But she has no use for a big house or a fancy car, and what’s more is that she doesn’t want to make it easy for him to send her away, so she shakes her head and says she won’t be a Candy.

He slams his hands on his desk and asks what he’s supposed to do then—he said he’s getting married, but she just asked for a basement, and he asked her to be a Candy but she won’t, so is she waiting for him to be the goat and offer himself up for her to eat? Lol.

Gong-shil just looks up at him and swears she wouldn’t do that: “Why are you having such a hard time? Is it a burden that I might like you?” She starts to cry and barely holds back her tears, swearing that she doesn’t like him. She says she’s just going to catch that vase ghost, and gets up to go.

He can’t help himself, and reaches out to grab her hand. He tells her it isn’t here and tells her they’re going home, and leads her out. He stops to point out that even after everything he just said, she’s not upset at what he’s doing, and she just grabs him tighter, admitting that she saw a scary ghost earlier.

She says the ajumma ghost was by the door, so he says they’ll have to go the whole way holding hands. He asks if she saw anything else while he was away, and she did, but she held onto his pen and got through it.

It’s only then that he remembers the necklace he bought to replace the pen, and peers down at her collar. No necklace. He guesses that she never picked it up.

Gong-shil offers up that she did manage to get through the week with that pen, so she thinks that in time, she’ll be able to muster up the nerve to leave before he tells her to get lost for good.

The gossip mill is going full force at Kingdom, and Gong-shil finds herself the topic of conversation everywhere she goes. She also happens to be wearing her Loser shirt today, perhaps having anticipated the kind of day she’d be having.

Kang Woo catches a glimpse of her sighing after Joong-won, as usual.

Aunt continues to spend her nights dreaming of dates with her beautiful scholar, who in reality turns out to be a scary ghost that spends its night sitting on top of her as she sleeps. *shivers*

Meanwhile, she continues to grow more and more agitated with her husband, who becomes increasingly disgusting in her eyes.

Kang Woo finally gives Gong-shil the Gong-shil doll, and introduces her as Dooly’s girlfriend. A short while later, Yi-ryung stops by to invite her to their high school friends’ dinner party, and Gong-shil decides it’s time to start joining in on stuff like that, and agrees to go.

Yi-ryung picks up the doll and asks if it’s a Dooly wannabe, but when she says it’s Dooly’s girlfriend named Gong-shil, Yi-ryung immediately remembers the Dooly doll sitting on Kang Woo’s desk, and her face falls. Gong-shil has to pry it out of her hands before she chokes the poor pink dinosaur.

Gong-shil chats with Secretary Kim, who reminds her that he’s on her side all the way. I love him. He sighs that the whole rumor about Joong-won’s first love curse has it all wrong—it’s not a curse, but a scar that just needs to heal.

He thinks all Joong-won really needs is someone to ignore his get-losts and stick to him no matter what (heh, hint hint) and then when he finds out that Gong-shil is meeting her high school friends tomorrow night, he makes sure to ask where.

He tells Joong-won that he arranged dinner with the fiancée, and asks if he’s going to end the engagement as planned or not. Joong-won refuses to tell him, enjoying the one thing he gets to lord over him for a minute.

Aunt continues to spend her nights in deep sleep with the creepy ghost sitting on top of her, and Uncle finally thinks her behavior strange enough that he starts looking for answers. He sees the vase and remembers Gong-shil’s eerie words.

So then he immediately brings it over to Joong-won’s house, and tells him it’s his engagement present so he should deal with it. He tells him about Aunt’s weird behavior, and that Gong-shil said they should break the vase. But he can’t exactly break the vase: “I mean it’s not like you’re going to break your engagement.” Pfft.

Joong-won picks it up with a devilish smile: “I’ll have her break it and tell her to take responsibility.” Hehe.

Cut to: Gong-shil standing in his living room, as he asks what he’s supposed to do when Aunt is being haunted but breaking the vase means breaking his engagement. She frets that they can’t break it then, and he sighs gravely that Aunt is really, really ill, like she’s on her deathbed.

In tiny pathetic voice: “She’s my only aunt.” Ahahahaha. I’m dying. Gong-shil says worriedly they have to break it then, and he jumps on that before she can finish, and declares that it was her idea, so if breaking this breaks his engagement, she has to take responsibility for it.

And then he sends it crashing to the ground before she can stop him. As soon as it shatters, Aunt wakes up and sees her ghost, and screams bloody murder. Uncle comes running in, and she clings to him, wondering what it was she saw. Thankfully the curse is lifted, and he goes right back to being sexy in her eyes.

Kang Woo comes by and finds Gong-shil talking to her Gong-shil doll, and he asks if she’s come to a decision about whether or not she can be without Joong-won. She doesn’t know the answer to that yet, but she has figured out how other people see her when she’s next to Joong-won.

He offers up that Gong-shil goes best with Dooly, and tells her to brag about her boyfriend at her reunion dinner tonight. She says she doesn’t have one to brag about, and he says you never know—Dooly might just show up.

She says she always liked Ddochi (another of Dooly’s cartoon friends) more than Dooly, and Kang Woo declares that he’ll have to prove Dooly’s worth to her. Bah, could there BE more metaphors in one episode? Are you a dinosaur, an ostrich, a goat, or a vase?

Secretary Kim sees Kang Woo leaving Gong-shil’s office, and finds out that he’s planning to be on a date with her. Hm, that messes with his plans, or does it? Meanwhile, Unni asks the gossipy guard to find out who’s spreading awful rumors about her sister, so she can give him a piece of her mind.

Daddy Joo arrives in Korea, and Kang Woo picks him up as scheduled. At the same time, Joong-won meets with his fiancée who regrets having to end things here, calling herself the fourth victim of his first love curse.

It’s all cordial since they both gained financially from the week-long engagement, but as she leaves, Joong-won complains about that curse rumor. Secretary Kim points out that a heart that won’t ever receive another’s feelings is a curse: “without change, the curse will never be lifted.”

Gong-shil arrives (at the same restaurant, natch, courtesy of Secretary Kim) to meet her old high school friends. Immediately she’s terrified by the waiter ghost that’s hovering by her table, but she holds it together for now.

Daddy Joo finally shares that picture of Hee-joo that he’s been staring at for ten episodes with Kang Woo, and tells him why it’s so damn important: it was taken a year after Hee-joo’s supposed death. OH. But… we know she’s a ghost.

Kang Woo wonders if she had a twin, and Dad doesn’t dismiss that as a possibility. But he shows Kang Woo the ten years of Christmas cards sent by the Hee-joo doppelganger, and they follow a strange pattern: they follow Joong-won’s whereabouts after the accident, from city to city, country to country.

And five years ago is when the last card was sent, saying that she’d be going to Korea, the same time Joong-won returned. Dad thinks that Hee-joo is still alive, and has been following Joong-won for the last fifteen years.

A girl goes jogging through Joong-won’s neighborhood that night, and Aunt recognizes her as the new tenant who just moved in next door. We don’t see her face, but Hee-joo’s ghost hovers over her shoulder with a worried look.

Joong-won spots Gong-shil in the restaurant, and Secretary Kim goes through the motions of playing dumb, all while laying in the important fact that Kang Woo is on his way here right now, and won’t Gong-shil be soooo happy to brag about her handsome boyfriend? Hee.

At the dinner, her friends prod her to talk about Joong-won, so she appeases them with the non-ghost Candy version of the tale, about how she met him one night and got a job at Kingdom just to follow him around, and then he eventually let her be near him, even renting out a whole swimming pool for a grand romantic gesture.

Yi-ryung listens with an evil smile on her face and asks how it ends, since the ending is the important part, and Gong-shil tells them that he’s marrying a chaebol heiress. She adds that she knows how it looks to the outside world, but she’s still hanging on because he’s the only person in her world, and she can’t let go. Her friends all cringe at that.

But just as she starts to cry, someone shows up behind her and all the friends’ jaws drop. It’s Joong-won! He just pats her on the head and says that he just broke his engagement because of her: “So take responsibility.” Eeeee.

He leads her away by the hand, and she asks what he’s doing. He points out that he finally got a normal reaction out of her, and asks if he’s supposed to return it with aegyo, and then proceeds to publicly call her his baby. I’m gagging a little.

He tells the friends that he’ll pay for dinner and then asks “baby” if she wants to go with “oppa,” and I’m seriously losing my lunch right now. It’s hilariously wrong, just so, so wrong.

He leads her out by the hand in slow motion, but once they’re outside, the music cuts out and she’s furious with him. She gets it—this is all she amounts to in his world. Oof. Kang Woo walks up just as she’s walking away in tears, and Joong-won leads her away before he can swoop in.

Yi-ryung comes out and sees Kang Woo there, and tells him that Joong-won broke off his engagement. She asks the question she’s dreading—did he come here for Gong-shil too? Does he like her? Kang Woo doesn’t hesitate to confess his feelings. Poor Yi-ryung, she’s a brat, but she does have a heart.

Gong-shil asks why Joong-won had to take it this far. All she needed was one tiny space to let her breathe, but was he so afraid that she might want more that he had to chase her away?

He says he is afraid, and asks if she can really be by his side and not want more, if she can really just use him as a shelter and then leave.

She swears that she can, and reminds him that she’s the type of person to run into his arms even after being stepped on just now, if something scary popped out.

So he relents: “Fine. I’ll trust you. I’m going to do whatever I want, and you handle everything on your own.” She nods, saying that she can handle anything.

Joong-won: “Really? Okay then, handle this: Taeyang. It seems that I love you. What’re you going to do now?”

OMO.

COMMENTS

This episode really felt like a Hong sisters classic, firing on all cylinders with the metaphor overload, the Candy reversal-on-reversal, everyone having conversations about two different things at the same time, and of course the cute declarations at every turn. I sort of forgot how much I love them when they write like this—no holds barred, every joke but the kitchen sink, go go go. It’s fast and fun and zingy, and there’s just something about episodes that snap into place like this one, like it’s comfortable in its own skin.

The whole hour (or week in story time) was really all about finding an excuse to be together, which is why you can actually throw wolves and goats and Candy and her chaebol prince at the problem, like they’re grasping at metaphor straws. I just love how desperately Joong-won is searching for a way to make this logically work. He can’t not be with her, but he can’t just let himself be with her openly because his feelings are too far gone, which is hilariously backwards, but totally logical to me. I just get him, in all his weirdness, because there’s an internal logic there. It’s screwed up, but it makes sense to me that he’s terrified enough of love to create his own obstacles, in case he falls so hard he can’t be his own fortress. I mean, it’s actually less crazy to run off and really marry someone else, than to make up a sham engagement to keep the woman you love at arm’s length, but nearby. I mean, what the hell.

I do love Gong-shil’s constant refusal to be his Candy, and how the metaphor came full circle today. It just stabbed me in the heart when she gave up the last ounce of her pride in this episode, and let all her friends believe that she was just a desperate clinging Candy to her chaebol prince. It isn’t who she is, and it’s the last thing she’d ever want to be, but it’s what she’s willing to give up to remain near him. That’s why his “rescue” at the dinner is equally grand (she’s not desperate and sad if he’s going to love her back) but also the nail in the coffin to her pride (it confirms her Candyhood). There’s something refreshing about that push and pull from her, because she’s not denying to herself that she has feelings for him, but doesn’t let herself forget that her (ghost-free) survival should come first. Little did she expect that the goat would really offer up his heart and tell her to eat it or die. Seriously, wolfie, what DO we do now?

I LOVE EPISODE 10.
Episode 10 showed how Tae Kong-sil must have felt when Joong Won came back from his Shanghai trip engaged to be married while he acts indifferent and in denial about his true feelings for her. Eventually at the end of the episode, Joong Won cancels her “fake engagement” and showed up at Tae Kong-sil’s reunion with her former classmates initiated by Tae Yi-Ryung, who was called by their classmates in high school “little sun,” while Kong-sil was the “big sun.”

Giving the impression that he is indeed Tae Kong Sil’s boyfriend infront of her old classmates, he rescues her from further embarrassment and make her take responsibility of the cancelled marriage he announced because of her. At the end of the episode, he asks her what will she do when he said, “I think I love you,” which shocked Tae Kong Sil and left her speechless.

What do you think will happen? Either Tae Kong Sil will embrace him and maybe end up kissing each other or she will be left speechless, in disbelief and run away from him.

Either way, I love how he lets the question hang in there for her to take responsibility as he now admits it himself what he really feels for her, now it is her turn to admit and face her own true feelings for him.

THEY MUST KISS TENDERLY THOUGH- ON THE NEXT EPISODE OR AT LEAST THE FINALE HAHA...not just a one way kiss, but mutually tender looong kiss:-)

while i was re-watching all the episodes today, i came to this conclusion that the giant mall owner will be the new girl who appeared in jogging suit in epi 10. Because joo won father said that she is already in korea and keeps a close watch on him and now she is residing him as a tenant too.hee jo was seen next to her in the lift. If she is the one with hee jo when she died it is possible. Bcoz with the money she can do it. So frnds what is ur opinion. This is my 1st post and sorry if it is wrong.

wow.. it's possible.. but then another reason for JW to hate her.. his competitor.
10 billion won, is it enough to finance the construction and everything for Giant mall? money-wise, i'm not sure how much investment it would take to bulid a mall like that.
but.. it's possible.

Here's a guess:

Hee Joo was the one with ghost-seeing powers. During the accident, some enterprising ghost possessed her body and refused to return it. Thus the Hee Joo ghost couldn't move on.

Someone said in a comment below that Gong Shil's accident may be related with Hee Joo's.

Maybe during the accident, Hee Joo passed her psychic powers to Gong Shil. And when Hee Joo ghost moves on, the ghost-seeing also stops.

(Although hopefully, the skinship and emergency-radar action doesn't)

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I suspect that Tae-Yang won't trust Joong-Won's confession because Joong-Won has been trying to box her into a role that he understands so that he can have a sense of control over the relationship.

Consider his "White Knight" rescue at the restaurant. Tae-Yang has repeated said she did not want to be a Candy. Yet he came in and confirmed her as Candy in front of her friends--of course you could say he was backing up the story she began. But at the restaurant, she told the truth, and was willing to stand by her choices without looking for a way out. That's why she was pissed when they exited the restaurant.

[Actually she said in this episode she couldn't be Candy because Joong-Won refused to be Prince Charming--so maybe her feelings have change]

0

Required fields are marked *

I think she's going to return it, and we're going to get one blissful episode of them being a new couple. I think this drama is getting them together early so that the whole twin/Not-Hee-Joo issue can come in at just the right time to screw everything up and really test their love. If they don't get together before HJ possesses GS (cause it's gonna happen, we all know it), then I feel like the stakes aren't high enough.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Totally agree he's trying to dictate the terms and completely disregards her asking not to be Candied by making a scene at the restaurant. That wasn't for her benefit, it was to placate his petty jealousy.

Makes it harder to swoon when he's being such an ass. But at least he didn't grab her wrist! (And I love that he hasn't done that once yet.)

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

But I'm not sure the restaurant rescue wasn't motivated by the urge to end her self-flagellation in front of her friends - he's shown before that he will step in and save her from public humiliation for her sake, not just his own (episode 8 with the hotel employees). He had no jealousy to assuage there, either - I'm going with rescue here rather than plain old jealousy of Kang-woo.

YES ahhaha I'm so glad someone mentioned that quietly getting up and moving away when Gong Shil said something to set his wife off, because it was such a subtle character moment and they played it to a hilarious T. And then all the "fightings" and the sexy lips. Loved the Uncle this ep.

0

Required fields are marked *

I need to review the uncle's interactions, too - but then, he could be on Tae-yang's side because he thinks that any union between Tae-yang and JW will make JW unfit to lead the company. It has always been shown that he wants control of the company, and that he thinks the "cleaning lady" will bring JW down.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yes, he did indicate in the earlier episodes that GS might be JW's weakness, but honestly since the beginning his efforts have been as useless as Yi-Ryung's. If you were that serious about bringing someone down, would you use goofy rumor mill gossip? He shipped Joong Won and Gong Shil since the beginning, I have a feeling, and I think he is just using this as an excuse to play. I said earlier on that he was using Kingdom as his playground.

Of course all of this could be a veil to fool everyone into thinking of him as a non threat.
But he has been such a valuble addition to the comedy in this series!

Yes, I squeeled when his wifey told him about his sexy slurping lips!!!

0

Everyone in this show is pretty cool or hilarious. No enemies or bitchy 2nd leads. Our female second lead is more cute and harmless than she is a b. The uncle, who at first i had reservations for, is now pretty funny. And thank god for the secretary being a decent human being without some kind of hidden agenda.
Gotta give it to the hong sisters who tend to write alot of likable characters and straying from the typical k-drama character norm. Still though, it's simply not a k-drama without a love square. Can't wait till the day your standard rom-com doesn't have that.

oh man now others are starting to SEE ghosts and the aunties scream made it a bit clearer why Gong Shil was originally so frightened and tired. The natural reaction first timeseeing a ghost is screaming from the top of your lungs and cradle up or run away. well, I would beg to differ from my part, I would love to meet grandpa even as a ghost, but unfortunately it is not possible.
well, that rules out Gong Shil really being crazy and imagining all of it.

I love that we already see a second ghost for an animal. They are equal to humans in this.

So Ji Sub is a bit bland. But I loved Kang Woo´s concern and kindness this episode.

Ohmygaaaawdddddd this episode. Am I on cloud 9? Yes I'm on cloud 9. I hope GS believes JW because we're already going into ep 11 next week! There's no more time for denial.

So many things happened that I'm just gonna bullet point what I loved:
-Breaking of the vase meant 3 things: breaking the omen, JW's wedding, and the first love curse. With that it was confession time!
-GS still refused to see herself as Candy (until the end with her friends though).
-OTP interactions. Okay seriously these two are too cute and their banter has the right amount of childishness and maturity. (I lol'd when he was manipulating her with the vase-breaking.) You can relate to their insecurities and I liked that JW was approaching everything with his head, trying to weigh out the pros and cons, questioning GS if she can handle everything that comes with them being together.
-JW's confession couldn't have been any more perfect for his character, tbh. I don't think he was planning on confessing to her but by the end he was pushed into it. Even after he pretty much confessed his feelings in front of her friends, GS still insisted she would do fine without him in the future. And I think JW couldn't handle beating around the bush anymore so he basically went, "Oh yeah? Really? You can handle it? Fine then, can you handle THIS? I think I love you. What are you going to do now?" It was just so HIM. Perfect, perfect.
-The way JW touched GS' hair and then rested his hand on her shoulder, swoooooooon. (Apparently Gong Hyo Jin was the one who suggested So Ji Sub to do that. Irl otp plz.)
-More subversions! Aside from the business engagement, GS and YR's high school friends. Normally in other dramas they're really bitchy and condescending to the female lead but here they're nice and supportive. Only goes to show how well liked GS must've been. I appreciated that!

Other:
-I have to say I didn't see that twin thing coming. So we've got a good twin and an evil twin? Evil twin pushed HJ to the kidnapping and when she died, evil twin started following JW? Why? Curiouser and curiouser...
-Secretary Kim as cupid: He is us. He is all of us.

Required fields are marked *

I actually think that the twin that died might not be Hee-Joo, but her sister Hee-NotJoo.

The ghost is not only protecting Joong-won, but also her sister Hee-Joo if Joong-won should ever catch her. That would mean that Hee-Joo never betrayed Joong-won but like him was a victim of someone's actions and betrayal.

Having a living Hee-Joo who never betrayed Joong-Won would add more complication to the storyline and more challenges to the OTP than a Hee-Joo look-alike who has been trailing Joong-won for years.

The thing is, both uncle and aunt saw the supposed twin and didn't have any reaction(apart from the uncle's eyes to go gooey at the pretty). The aunt even went to the orphanage to give money so I bet they all know how Hee Joo looked like. It doesn't make sense if they didn't!

Required fields are marked *

It's been fifteen years. They're probably using an older actress for older Hee Joo/doppelganger, just like they did with Joong Won.
Aunt wouldn't have been able to recognize her after all these years anyway.

is all getting very complicated but does anyone else think that at some point a 'living' Hee Joo might make Joong Won doubt Gong Shil's ghost seeing powers? He knows her too well for the suspicion to stick but it might bring us to an interesting moment of trust versus reason. What with all his stress on brain over all else.

0

They have been hitting her slight memory problem in nearly every episode. Her being much taller is what throwing me. Running in high heels?

0

Same. I assumed aunt and uncle would have recognized cha hee joo, because they still remember her till this day even though she was a part of joong won's past a longg time ago. The fact that they went to the orphanage confirmed that too.
Wonder why it's been overlooked.

0

Required fields are marked *

yeah but 15 years hav3 passed the ghost of her looks like the young hee jo because ghost stop aging her twim would have grown up just like joog won. not recognizing her would be normal.

0

Required fields are marked *

I gotta say in real life, I have seen my high school and college friends, now about 15 years and none of them have changed all that much. They are still very recognizable just a little older but I saw them as if it was yesterday that we were in high school. So I think the aunt and uncle could reasonably recognize hee Joo after 15 yrs if it was in fact her. I would expect them to. This is drama land so I know anything can happen.

0

Required fields are marked *

I don't know about you, but when she came running up, the aunt looked kinda strange, giving a quick answer to her hubby, and sort of "acting" like she was just as clueless as him. I don't have it in front of me, but I kinda got a suspicious vibe, like she DID know more than she was letting on. I think that Yumi said something similar in a reply to your post, lol!

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I feel like the twin who died might be Hee-NotJoo as well. But what incentive does she have to 'protect' Hee-Joo if she's innocent in the first place. It does complicate the OTP (and justifies the stalkerish behaviour) but if the 'evil' twin was in it alone, then Hee-Joo would have no qualms about facing JW. Maybe both were involved. The driver dressed in black who was driving the car with HJ in it looked a lot like a woman. I initially thought it might be the Aunt, but increasingly I feel like she isn't involved in this in any major way. Could the one who ran away from the accident be the real HJ and the one who died the twin sister? So much confusion!

Meanwhile. LOVED THIS EPISODE! The best, best best so far! Love how virtually EVERYONE undercuts any potential for melodrama (of which there is plenty) by being their remarkably petty and adorable selves.

Required fields are marked *

I'm going to be so confused if the one who died was not HJ and was other sister and the living is actually HJ. But I have a feeling that HJ was the one who died, because she knew a lot of details about JW that her sister didn't? I don't know man, this is all confusing to me. I'm just going to wait to see how it all pans out before I hurt any more of my brain cells, haha.

However, the Hong Sisters like to subvert cliches so HJ might not be the despicable first love we all think she is. She'll probably be redeemed in the end when the Truth comes out.

Not sure if anyone had watched The Prestige by Christian Bale & Hugh Jackman before but the death of one of the Hee Joos sounded dangerously like what Christian Bale's character was... he has a twin that nobody knew, who went to jail for him. Not even his wife knew!

Maybe all the interactions with young JW was in fact, two different HJs. Hence, young JW has no idea if HJ ever liked him before with all the hot & cold because he was facing two of them! LOL

0

Required fields are marked *

I was thinking just the same thing when the twin thing was introduced ... that it is The Prestige-like! Where one twin was in love with JW & the other just wanted to rip him off. The lovestruck one died & the larcenous one survived & is seeking vengeance on JW & Dad.

0

Agree with the good/evil twin theory - it would explain why CHJ was blowing hot and cold, and telling him that she hoped he'd suffer a lot/as much as he liked her.

When CHJ's ghost first took over Gong-shil's body, she told Joong-won that she loved him, so at least one of the twins was sincere.

May set up an interesting choice if Gong-shil has to give up her body, so that Good Twin can face off with Evil Twin to help release Joong-won from his curse.

0

Omg two heejoos courting the same joongwon, that's messed up! But that's a very interesting theory.

0

well from the flash back of the car crash the one that ran away made no effort to help the one trapped, hardly the thing a twin sister would do, unless she just a 'bad bitch' of course...
The trouble with it all is the time..why wait so long..what was HJ to the father ..lots of dots to connect just yet

"-Secretary Kim as cupid: He is us. He is all of us."
OMG You are sooooo RIGHT!!!!!
I feel really dumb, but I didn't really understand the confession scene. I am not understanding what way he was asking her if she could be by his side and not take it as something more and just leave when it was the end? What is he expecting her to do? I think he wants her to reciprocate the love, but is he asking her to handle it and view him like a shelter still? URGGG!

Anyway, I love the way he stepped in at the restaurant, I hope that he realizes that she just confessed that he was her everything. I am not sure about the Candy metaphor nor do I really enjoy it, I just want him to see that to her, he is so special, not that she has any agenda to use him to get into his world.

I love the tension of this weeks episode and I don't know about waiting until next weeks!!!

I tried to watch "A Thousand Kisses" but couldn't make it past Episode 15, and then read the recaps on a different site and was highly disappointed. I just needed something to get me through the week (LOL, I sound like a drug addict). I did enjoy meeting the characters (especially little sis who was Jandi's bff on BOF), so I had fun making up stories in my head. Which I will be doing this week for Gong Shil and Joong Won!!

I can't wait till next week, but hope that this couple (who I love dearly) get it together and get on the same page. I am hoping that they come together quickly and then maybe work on this whole 10 Billion Won, Cha Hee Joo, mystery together. FIGHTING!!!

I see that I may need a literary degree to follow the depth of this drama, but I really love and appreciate all of those here that share and dissect this drama so that we all can receive a clear picture of what is a most interesting and wonderful love story (mystery, comedy, thriller, sociology study, ect.....all rolled into one!!)!!!

I'm with you on your confusion about the confession.

I wondered in the subtitles might have been too literal so that we got too much denotation and not enough connotation.

It would be great if some native KOREAN speakers would help out.

As best I can figure out

Joong-Won was confirming that although she is waking-up/breaking out of her isolation caused by her ghost haunting, and was back to living in the real world and now saw him as a man she would/could take responsibility, and not cling to him.

So he's making her responsible for how deep or complicated the relationship gets or for making sure that the relationship doesn't become one that messes up his life's goal.

I'm not sure.

PLEASE HELP Korean speakers. What was Joong-Won going on about before confessing that he thought he loves Tae-Yang.

0

Required fields are marked *

I'm confused too, still am, but for now I'm taking the confession at face value: he told her he thinks he loves her, and while I think he wants her to reciprocate, he's basically also saying, "since you said you can handle it, there, now it's your problem". And whatever her answer is he'll base his future actions on it? He'll calculate what he'll do. Lol I honestly have no idea.

Based on my experience watching drama, I kind of think Redge is right.

Usually when a man is certain about his feelings/affection for the woman he's serious about, he's willing to 'take responsibility' of her. But in this case, our Mr Joo probably knows he likes/love her to bits but cos he was also afraid of what she would respond to him, so he's kind of letting it hang there, "Ok, there, I said it first, now what?" LOL

Yeah I'm confused too. I understand it as all this 'confessing' is him trying to get her to admit she loves him and he's not just a 'shelter' she can turn away frm at will. He's needling her. Same with the urn breaking business.

It's his ego talking, trying to get her to fess up to see if she feels as strongly as he does, because he can't turn her away, so how can she turn him away? Also he probably wants to be sure of her reciprocation coz of his insecurities of being burned by Hee Joo.

All this while telling her he wants to keep it Candy-like and for her to go away. So he's confused, she's confused, we're all confused.

You know what though? This is a good example of our real world emotions to some extent. We all (or just me,lol) want to think and overthink our emotions, especially when we don't exactly understand the root or can not "calculate" it.

I also think that her last words to her friends is what made up his mind. Basically saying that he is her "world" (okay, the only one IN her world, but same thing). He came to rescue her very sweetley, but it kinda backfired and he had no choice but to make her realize that she is not Candy to him. I really don't think he catagorized her as Candy by his confession, but I am not sure she won't take it like that.

He was totally going to walk out before she started explaining her situation in the way the rest of the world saw it, how a woman would see it and act. Not necessarily shameless, or desperate, but like her oxygen.
She makes it clear that she can't really live/breathe without him by her side. And yes, he heard all that! I don't know about you, but if I was him I would be walking up to her and ultimately doing the same thing, with adding a kiss, hug, whatever!

But what kills me is that since he is beating around the bush and most of what he says is ALWAYS going over her head, you would think he wouldn't have added all that stipulation before his confession. I am almost sure that he was leaving himself a "hegde" to protect his feelings should she mess it up (which she probably will).

Hopefully by next episode they will be our OTP couple and then run with the real root of this story, figuring out what exactly happened 15 years ago. I love dramas where we as viewers are figuring things out at the same (sometimes faster) pace as the main characters. I really believe that we will be super shocked at the end.

I have a small theory (that's what you get for having to wait a whole week for an actual episode) that Sec. Kim knows everything, but not as a bad guy. As Joo Joong Won's protector. He knew that Gong Shil is really ment for JW and that she can heal his heart and prepare him for the truth. I'm not sure that any of this would ever have come out had GS not been placed in his world.

IDK, we'll have to wait and see. I love everyones imput and fantasizing about thier theories!!

Much Love!

Oof. This is longer than I intended, but...

I didn't get this from the drama, but from people I've known who are in a similar world to the people in the drama. So take this for what it's worth.

Men in his position (second+ generation wealth, with an emotionally distant father) often struggle with a sense of insecurity about how much someone will love them for who they really are. They’re inwardly tormented by a sense that they don't measure up, and become convinced that nobody will unconditionally love them. At the early stages this belief is validated by (invariably) being surrounded by people who want to latch on to them for superficial reasons (their money/prestige/status). In response, they shut people out emotionally by constructing an image that’s entirely defined by the superficialities of their life. It keeps them safe because they can rationalize that people only want them for what they can get ,because that’s all they let people see about themselves. But inwardly they still ache for someone to 'see' them and love them for who they are. The rules for letting people in are simple but steep. If a person seeking to get closer shows they care about the 'stuff' to ANY degree, they're immediately shut out. But because their image, they rarely attract any of these people. Thus, they live the lonely life that a shell-like personality can expect. Few people are ever allowed into their inner world. Their inner and outer worlds become horribly disconnected.

So maybe JW's character is based on that type of person. He keeps people at arms length by only letting them get to know him as the scion of a powerful family. He inwardly wants to be known and loved, but won't let anyone in. He prefers to keep women in the "Candy" category because that established parameters he's comfortable with. A Candy is allowed to remain around him for companionship, but (because she only wants superficial stuff) is never allowed to invade his emotional space.

What's rocking JW’s world, is that GS is that unique person who doesn't care about the 'stuff'. The only thing she wants is to be close to him. She's also shown loving care and concern about what he thinks, wants and how he really feels. And so he's surprised to find that, despite the roadblocks and barriers he put up, she passed the test and worked her way into his heart. But to let his guard fully down, there's one thing he needs to resolve. Does she does want to be around him only because of what she wants from him...to have a respite from the ghosts? Or will she love him loyally and truly, just for who he is?

If you think about it, in the emotional world of JW there's only one person who has shown that kind of warmth, loyalty, care and concern for him; and it's Secretary Kim. Every one else seems to have some sort of self-serving agenda. It’s also interesting that Secretary Kim told JW that GS - who sees souls (not stuff) - would accept him for who he is if he opened his heart to her. Later that evening he makes his confession.

So maybe what that scene was about is, in front of her friends, he’ll put up a facade to make it look like she’s nothing more than a Candy to him. He holds all strangers at arm’s length and wants to keep it that way. But, in private he wants her to know his heart, so he can know hers in return.

The only other thing to say, is that this whole line of reasoning will probably be disproved within in the first five lines of dialogue in Episode 11. Like she'll say 'I love you too' and he'll revert to his old smug self and say 'see, I knew it was me and not Kang-Candy'. LOL.

One question..

Is JW actually trying to make GS to confess first? So that he would be less pressured to reciprocate her feelings?

I think he has had enough of her denial. He just couldn't take it anymore. With each denial that comes out of her mouth comes the understanding of just how much he loves her.

But although he thinks she loves him, he needs to hear it from her own lips. He needs to hear her words saying that she loves him just as much. Why? Because once he hears it he'll believe it. Because he trusts her like no other. That's why her confession is important to him.

Ok. Yes, he trusts her like no other.

But then, why he keep asking her whether she can "get lost" later?

Is he testing her that she wanted to be beside him NOT bcoz of money?

Required fields are marked *

From what I see, that talking (about her just using him as a shelter and not asking for more, therefore leave or get lost when he asked her to) is in the part when he's still in a denial stage. Actually both of them are not admitting that they love each other. He's going to marry some one else, she's professing to like Kang Candy.

But her denial upsets him so much so that he stops his own denial and comes clean with that saranghamida (love) instead of just choa (like). In this stage what he really wants is not for her to leave but to take responsibility for what she has done (for making him to fall for her).

For making him her crazy goat.

I thought he already confessed first when he said "I think I love you". He's been confessing this entire episode but it all went over her head until he just went and said it.

I think he just wants to know how she REALLY feels about him. Between the two of them JW was the one who was more honest with his feelings while GS skirted around hers (we can really see it in this episode). He's unsure of how she feels about him and has been baiting her to try to get her to confess or say something but she won't have it. So now that he told her how he feels directly he probably hopes she'll do the same.

I might be totally off--but I think for Joong-Won loving Tae-Yang doesn't mean he is committed to a happily ever after with her. I think he doesn't believe in happily ever after and wants to make a practical/rational choices.

I think the reason that he has been avoiding his feeling [besides being scared of being changed and overwhelmed] is that he doesn't want to be permanently swept away in their relationship. Joong-Won wants someone to stay rational.

Tae-Yang has been saying that as the wolf she can't afford to love him beyond reason because she needs him as food (ghost/bomb shelter). Loving beyond reason him means puts having him as her shelter in jeopardy.

Joong hasn't trusted that Tae-Yang can keep from loving him beyond reason if they were to be in 'that kind of relationship'. He feels because the ghosts had so taken over her life and kept her at the end of her wit, she has not had the chance to respond as a woman in many situation. Now that she has some breathing room she will respond as a woman to being with him constantly, caring about him and as a result will love him.

I think the problem for Joong-Won is that if they are both in love with each other then they are stuck together and unable to make practical/rational life decision about appropriate marriage partners and such. And when the time comes that it is appropriate to end the relationship, neither will be able to let go.

Tae-Yang says she can.

So Joong-Won said, fine, if you can do it, them I'm going to stop being rational and practical. I'm going to stop putting the breaks on my feelings and action. I'm going to do what gives me pleasure. It's now your responsibility to see that we don't go overboard.

I'm not sure this is a proper interpretation, because of the not speaking Korean thing.

So I don't think it's about him wanting her to stay. I think it is about him needing her to leave when it's appropriate, and even if he doesn't want he to leave. As he said earlier he can deal, if he knows there will be an ending. If he isn't guaranteed and ending that scares the crap out of him.

0

In a perfect world we could talk to the characters...

"Joong-Won wants someone to stay rational.".
Yeah, but you said she was already in your heart. Good luck with working that out. Follow your Aunt's lead, marry the person you love.

"Loving beyond reason him means puts having him as her shelter in jeopardy."
But not if you believe your shelter can become your home sweet home. Fighting!

And to the writers..
If you split these two up - especially with some Candy-like noble idiocy - it'll be a looooong time before you'll receive any love on Dramabeans.

Thanks for the recap Girlfriday.

Wow.

When I saw the raw, the episode didn’t seem that amazing. When I watched with the subtitles
WWOOOWWW!

The ending. WWWWWWWWWWWooooowwww. I’m curious to see if he will try to back away from this declaration next week.

The small admission leading up to the big reveal. The dialogue even with imperfect translation was so delicious.

“Have you been doing well for the past week? You don’t look too bad. For me it was hell.” Eh??

And then the master of mixed messages began fight he couldn’t win against a woman who wouldn’t fight by his rules.

“I am not even a ghost but why am I like this [see you shining brightly like the sun]”

“Just be simple and be Candy. Then I, for sure, can get rid of you. As long as the end is clear, I’m not scared.”

“Are you going to keep demanding until I become a goat and give you everything, screaming ‘Catch and eat me!’?”

“Doing this made you finally difficult. Then is it’s my turn to act cute? . . . My baby, will you come with Oppa?” Oppa?!??! Freaking Oppa?!?!?!??! I’m dying.

I must say this is as close as I’ve ever come to predicting the trajectory of a drama ever. I figured Tae-Yang would not buckle and ultimately Joong-Won would be driven nuts because she seems to miss him less than he needed her by his side.

Bowled over when Joong-Won said that seeing what Tae-yang feels for him is as scary as the ghost she see. Wow I figured that was the case but I didn’t expect for him to admit it.

I must say that I loved Joong-Won in this episode. I loved his honesty with himself. I loved him being an honest jackass. I just loved his talk with Child Psychologist/Lawyer/Secretary Kim. (why don’t I have my own CP/L/S Kim helping me with my life).Poor rich Joong-Won and all his attempt to ignore the words of his Fairy-god Secretary Kim.

The failed Candy negotiations were amusing and simultaneously heartbreaking watching Joong-Won struggle to keep things in his head charka, where he had control and understanding, and away from his heart, where he is confused and so easily bruised. I feel as if we were meant to feel Tae-Yang’s pain, but it is Joong-Won’s confusion that squeezed my heart in that scene. All through the scene Joong-Won acted as if Tae-Yang was the opposition. She wasn’t. Throughout it all, Joong-Won main opposition was Joong-Won’s heart—and when that’s the case, he hasn’t a fly’s chance in a tornado. He. Is. Going. Down!

Master Schemer after failing his Candy negotiation tries to trick Tae-Yang to take responsibility for breaking his engagement by shedding crocodile tears for his aunt.

His need for her is palpable that I suggest if he ran out of ghost, he’d asked the matchmaker to the dead to find him some, so that he’d had a reason to remain by her side.

Wow--now the question is, as Girlfriday noted, will the wolf eat?

Exactly! took the words right out of my mouth!

And "failed Candy negotiations" - hahahaha! :)

He's totally on her wavelength - he bats at thin air around GS to shoo away ghosts and help her sleep. And when they were dealing with the pool ghost, he muttered to himself that it wasn't even strange seeing GS talking to ghosts anymore!

I suspect GS's situation is a little more tricky, though. She's had a taste of being the focus of company gossip, and to everyone, she'll be the reason why his latest engagement was broken. To her, he's not just a man she likes, but he's also her safety shelter, so she'd probably feel bad about dating him while "using" him at the same time. Also, she has the devilish voice of reality and reason (aka Kang Woo) whispering in her ear (much as I love KW as a second lead) ...

What I haven't seen anyone mention (though maybe they have in the comments of previous recaps and I just missed it) is that they've totally subverted the second lead female's role. She is usually competition for the lead actor, but here's she's actually after the second lead, who of course loves the main girl but won't get her. I find it hilarious.

Required fields are marked *

Actually, i just realized this(im slow, i know :D ). This 'second female lead going after second male lead' happened in Best Love too. Kinda like they(the writers) use the same mould for her 2nd female lead.

- In Best Love, the 2nd female lead(yoo inna) was always shadowed behind the female lead(GHJ) success/popularity during their younger years. but in the present, she's the successful one while the female lead is suffering in some kind of bad predicament. just like it is in Master's Sun.

- In Best Love, the early episodes hints that the 2nd female lead are going after the lead(the usual), but it turn out she's after the second male lead instead. Both Best Love and Master's Sun leaves the 2nd male with unrequited love and heart break.

So, maybe, just maybe, little sun, after today's episode of nearly killing the pink Dooly's gf, will go to the dark side for awhile, pulling a 'Kang Seri', then coming back by helping big sun in some way, thus redeeming whatever bad stunt she did in the dark side. :)

I remember the reference but I have watched Lovers in Paris a long time ago but the basic gist is:

I couldn't remember if it was the male or female lead who went on a blind date. The other one shows up suddenly (or intentionally I couldn't remember again, sorry). By then, both of them probably had feelings for each other but nobody is doing anything.

So in an act to try to get the female lead out, the male lead mentioned something, "My baby... (uri eki ah...)" the girl was shocked, how come this guy calls her eki (baby) Finally the guy said, "Let's go, baby." I couldn't remember who managed to save the other out of the dreadful blind date.

But the confession...made me run straight here to post about it. "I think I love you." Soooo grumplestilkins.

Plot wise, i don't like these theories bandied about about alive Hee Joo or twin Hee Joo...just tell me straight up what his hussy is involved in and lets put that to bed.

Other than the moment Yiryung clenches her fist like she's going to suffocate a soft toy, I liked everything about this episode. (That being because it seemed like the beginning of going into dark second lead territory rather than being annoying, cute and quite winning as a final match up for Kangwoo).

Everything makes /sense/ in this drama. Everything each character does makes sense. It only seems logical to us. The Hong Sisters have never been better - they're twisting and turning all our expectations and playing with romantic tropes. The Candy metaphor killed me today. And So Ji Sub's acting, wow. I didn't think I'd be saying it, but. Wow. Their chemistry is fantastic, and it's because they both manage to be so grounded in an understandable way in such a strange premise.

One tidbit to share, at the reunion, JW called GS "baby" and she should go with "oppa"? According to news that came out later, these weren't in the original script. SJS added that "baby" while GHJ suggested the hair and face touching plus "oppa" bit. And told the director not to cut it out. LOL. That's cute <3

This is why i enjoyed this episode so much although the plot didn't go anywhere much. Alot of building on their relationship. Revelations, denial, and finally acceptance. Aside from the fact that she sees ghosts and uses him as a emergency shelter and him using her as a ghost radar, there were no other gimmicks to this relationship that built itself up on its own. She found someone that gave her breathing room and a safe world. To him, she did just the same. She's not as "candy-to-the-prince-charming" as she thinks -- because he needs her as much as she needs him! The dialogue was pretty good this episode, for sure.

This drama subverts my expectations so amazingly. I was sighing, thinking this episode would have a lot of angst and sadness, but somehow it had as many comical and romantic moments as prior. Maybe even more. Every line that came out was different from what I predicted. I don't find anyone annoying (excepts maybe Kang-woo, but that's only because he keeps posing a threat to OTP). And I love Secretary Kim for helping the OTP. He's an awesome character. That uncle dude is pretty funny too.

Also, the main couple has such sizzling chemistry! I don't think I've felt so much chemistry in any couple thus far (IHYV was very natural but it wasn't passionate, and QIHM was passionate but the obstacles were external so it wasn't as tinged with electric charge).

Also, I usually get frustrated with the chaebol character because it's such an extreme characterization. Very childlike, immature, temperamental, bipolar, etc. But Joong Won's character doesn't annoy me at all. I really like him; he's jaded but he's not overcompensating by being mean or arrogant. It's like he tries to be the extreme chaebol character but kinda fails :P (like he tries to be arrogant, or he tries to ignore Tae-yang but he can't get himself to do it LOL) And what he does makes perfect sense for who he is. Part credit is also due to So Ji Sub for his subtle acting. I never knew of him before but I definitely like him here.

Similarly, I know they're specifically pushing this point but I really like Tae-yang/Gong-shil. She is very down-to-earth and true to her self. She isn't too naive or doormat-y but at the same time she isn't cheery and optimistic all the time. She strikes a nice balance, the same way Hye-sung did in IHYV. And once again, huge credit to Gong Hyo-jin. She plays her so naturally.

Agree. Joong-won's "arrogant" facade is really something they all adapt as a chaebol, but i see him as someone who thinks logically and in a beneficial manner more than anything. He keeps calculating the value of people and the reasons of their actions as if everyone functions in a world for one reason and one reason only: money. And what one person does for another, the other must pay them back. Like everything is business.
It's somewhat of a breath of fresh air because for this reason joong-won is very straightforward and honest with his intentions from the very beginning. Along the way, he found reasons to see taeyang, but he didn't act immature around our heroine the way many heroes do once they start liking someone. Like you said, there is none of that extreme chaebol characterization.
That applies to tae yang too. You are spot on by saying that she's not naive, but neither is she too cheery and optimistic the way our candy heroines are in dramaland. Gong Hyo Jin is portraying this character to a tee. I connect with her character because she doesn't quite fit the mold of your typical heroine. She could be one of us. She likes it when guys show interest in her, she likes skinship, and she's up for some fun. She's pretty realistic in that aspect for me. No playing hard to get, no bullshitting basically.
I like how tae yang continues to confuse his robot-like thinking. I love how its sort of making him ask questions and try to understand her better. Emotions of the heart is very complex, and joong-won is only recently discovering that. Listen to your secretary joong-won, open your heart to her!

His timing was perfect at the little reunion. He created a scene for the Green Monster - with all of that touching, picking up the tap, and words of endearment - Oppa - I love this tall Knight in Hugo Boss. Plus I am now loving the other cupid - the Uncle. The earlier episodes I was not sure what side of the fence he was playing on, but now he is listening to her words and encouraging her efforts in love - "Fighting" - this time he used her correct name.

I actually also love the way that uncle really concerned about his changing wife. It's rare in dramas where you see adults couple still find each other attractive, and I see that between uncle and aunt. That they're still sexually attractive to each other. I thought uncle stayed with his wife because she's rich, but this epi shows me that's not the case. He really does love her.

THIS. As someone of a certain age, I hate how older couples are always shown as dead from the waist down, and often in a relationship that may have started in love but is now one of a mixture of loyalty and convenience. It doesn't have to be that way, it often isn't and it is nice to see that shown in a drama.

I'm confused on Joong-won's confession. Basically he said as long as Tae-yang doesn't love him back, it's ok for him to love her? When she does fall for him, she will leave?

Or did mean that, if Tae-yang loves him and he becomes the one person in her world. If that happens, he can't tell her to get lost even if he ends up hating her? As much as a check he is, he can't abandon a person who's completely dependent on him.

Or does he want her to become a normal person, so he can have a relationship with her? That he wants to be with her because she wants him. Not just because he's the only person and shelter.

I'm really hoping it's the third reason. He has noted and tried to get her to react as a normal person for a while now.

I was a little confused as well! I really don't know if he was putting up a little "hedge" of protection in case he needed to recant later on to save face, or if he wants her to feel the same, like a normal person, so he can accuse her of becoming Candy, so that he can logically tell her to "get lost" because she has become a woman "just like the rest of them" kind of thing.
Or if he really just wants her to not run from him liking her? Is he asking if she can handle using the MAN who loves her as just a "shelter" from ghosts?
He seems always a little hurt to think of himself as just a lump of stone to her.

I don't know either!!!
Like I said to Redge, I think I need a literary degree to dissect this, but I LOVE IT!!

Aaah! I don't know what to say. I LOVE this. I love them. And the metaphors, oh the metaphors, they are one reason why I love the Hong Sister´s dramas.

Ah! I remember. Obiously, with the end and all the great things in this episode, the posible twin of Hee-joo is the least of my concerns right now, my mainly concern is what Gong-shil is going to say, but my thoughts on the "maybe she is not dead" thing is that maaaaybe she can posses another person or control her some how? Thats how she has been able to follow Joong-won. It doesnt explain the photo, but she is dead, so i cant think of anything else. I dont want a twin, its hard for the Hong Sisters to handle the"twins" thing.

But, returning to the important thing: Oh God, I love this drama. And Gong-shil. And Joong-won. And teh secretary! he is the best.

Aw, i felt bad for Yi-ryung and Kang Woo.

Thank you for the recap!

Kyaaaaaaaaa! Omygod! I just died watching this episode. The last scene where JW told GS that he's gonna do whatever he wants so she should handle it kinda reminds me of Dokgo Jin's confession in Best love. And thinking about how crazy dokko jin has become after that makes me all the more excited for next week. I know JW will be heck a lot less crazier that cha seung won but still I can't help but be giddy over the thought.

After last episode I was afraid that the next few episodes will be angsty but thankfully it wasn't. Sulking JW is so adorable when he was burying his face in his arms. I died when he was telling GS that they had to break the vase cause his aunt was dying.

So Jisub is such an amazing actor! Why did he do rom coms just now?? I want an extension for this but if it's gonna mess up the story then I'd rather have an amazing 16 episodes. Then again I'd watch So jisub smoldering for 10 hours. IDK about you guys but I'll choose So ji sub over all the eye candy Heirs has to offer for now.

AGREED. im not saying all idols are horrible actors or anything (i actually have liked a few idol dramas alot), but there is just something that cannot be replicated about the subtle, effortless acting that comes from an experienced actor. SJS has yearssss of acting under his belt (although its not in the rom-com genre), and it definitely shows. good acting isnt just about being able to cry buckets or intense anger - i feel like less experienced actors really depend on "all or nothing" scenes to compensate for their lack of detail.

PLUS, SJS is a real man. haha which i cant really say for some idols LOLOL SO HAWTTTT

oh and GHJ is an amazing actress as well - am i the only one who thought the last crying scene of the episode was just so amazingly natural?? my heart broke for herrrr

What made that scene work was because she wasn't giving in to tears. She wanted to get on with it, but her need to cry was an obstacle she was working to overcome.

A famous director once said that actors are the only group of people who are always trying to cry in public. Most normal people want to skip that humiliation and do their best to hold it together.

Totally agreed as well. SJS is such an amazing triple threat: actor, singer/rapper, model. Not to mention a great photographer (has a published book of photos) and an intellectual. He's not just another pretty face or hot body! Quite a few posts here from people who are not familiar with his body of work, but he has been around for a long time and always picks the right roles to challenge his acting chops.

One rom/com movie he did was with Zhang Ziyi in "Sophie's Revenge," but he's known for roles in movies with more depth: Rough Cut, Always (amazing!), and A Company Man. And of course, who can forget his breakout role in What Happens in Bali, and I'm Sorry I Love You, which propelled him to stardom.

LOVE him in this role, so refreshing to see him doing a rom com with so much depth.

And of course, LOVE Gong Hyo Jin, one of my favorite actresses. She has a kind of beauty that radiates from within, enhanced by a warm personality, sophisticated style, and lots of talent.

VPUncle SexyLips and his hidden behind the hand “fighting” was hysterical today. I suspect the actor is having a grand old time with the role.

Kang-Woo made a valiant effort to stay in the competition today, but to no avail.

Yi-Ryeong lipstick on your collar attempt at marking her man was hysterical. From another character it would have been obnoxious, but from her it’s just cute.

The Hee-Joo mystery got really weird and now Aunt is yanking my chain of suspicion.

I'm thinking that Hee-Joo had nothing to do with the kidnapping. Someone pressured her sister Hee-NotJoo to impersonate her and take part in the kidnapping. Now her sister's ghost is hanging around not only to protect Joong-Won because she feels bad about what she did, but also to protect Hee-Joo, should Joong-Won ever get an inkling of what happened and that Hee-Joo is alive.

I'm thinking that the neighbor whose face we didn't see is the was-never-dead Hee-Joo.

If Hee-NotJoo died and Hee-Joo is alive, unless she had major reconstruction surgery, Aunt should recognize her. Aunt's relationship with Hee-Joo's orphanage before and after her death make me go eh? mmmmm.

So Hee-NotJoo feels bad about the kidnapping, and Hee-Joo feels bad/guilty about what her sister did.

Since Joong-Won has acknowledged his feeling for Tae-Yang, and the 'fiancee' was a sham complication, it makes sense to bring in a real complication.

I mean, Joong-Won was invested in Hee-Joo and still is. If she is innocent in relations to his kidnapping, and has loved him all this time, she might have standing. So he will be back in a state of emotional uncertainty and confusion trying to choose between Tae-Yang and Hee-Joo.

Required fields are marked *

Hee-not-joo - lol! But, I'm thinking the opposite. Hee joo really is dead and is the ghost (her reappearance would destroy JW+GS). Hee-not-joo is her evil twin sister who had something to do with either the kidnapping or hee-joo's death (or both) out of kdrama jealousy - the kind that could make someone do that to her twin. Hee joo is watching over JW until he knows the truth and to protect him or GS - who may be the new target of evil twin's jealousy. Oh, oh and there's money and jewelry involved, so evil twin doesn't want anyone figuring that out.

Also, JW and Daddy Joo obviously didn't know Hee joo was a twin back then. But now the father has a picture and postcards (who gave them to him)?

Hee-not-joo is in Korea and living right under everyone's nose, but she doesn't know about her twin's ghost who is there to protect something or someone. When the mystery is unraveled, then the curse will be broken and JW can properly give his heart to GS.

If they go with the twin story I really hope Hee-notJoo is still alive and evil and she had some major surgery so she could spy on Joong Won in peace. Required fields are marked *

I agree with what someone pointed out up-thread, that it was Hee-Joo who died because of certain information re the relationship with Joong Won that she would only know--for instance, the "Joo-one, Joo-two-Joo-three" -- a private joke that only the young lovers would know. Unless (and it seems farfetched) she told this to her twin.

I have not yet watched the episode, but based on the recap it seems Hee-jo having a twin is just speculation at this point. Though the question of course is why would someone who looked so much like her be alive and moving following Joong-won? Curiouser and curiouser...

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, I agree.

Even if Hee-joo was pressured/deceived into kidnapping Joong-won, it would certainly restore her image as his pitiful "first love" in his eyes. And Gong-shil would probably be willing to "sacrifice" her body so that he could have closure (please, no, don't go there, Drama!)

I'm still going with the whole they needed money quick part of my theory. A necklace worth that much money had to be insured right? Or does insurance not work in these type of cases? I need to go find out. Any insurance experts here? Anyhow the aunt set it all up. She acidently meet HJ2 and realize she could use her, but somehow the real HJ found out & took her sisters place. So she died, and HJ3 feeling guilty or blaming Master for her sister death, has been following him around. To make sure he always remembers or to make sure he remains unhappy. How is she getting the money? By blackmailing the aunt. Ha..
Ok. Even in my crazy head this sounds insane..

I am not sure I buy that the aunt is behind the kidnapping - for what purpose? She has money - from the storyline it appears that she is the one with the money and my new favorite Uncle married into their family wealth. She appears to be in good relationship with her brother - whenever she talks about him - Oppa's Dad - I don't sense any jealousy/hatred/bitterness, etc....

I was shocked about the twin motif - the girl on the elevator was much taller than Hee Joo - face can be altered but her height/fame did not mirror Hee Joo's picture.

I love that my Oppa told fake girlfriend not to touch him and in this episode he was touching, caressing, and holding on to Big Sun with all his might - while he was scratching his head wondering why????

This episode ROCKED!!!!!

One possible explanation is the person we think of as Hee-Joo was a teenager when she died. She might not have stopped growing. Her twin being alive had the opportunity to grow to her true height.

I agree with you, I'm not into the idea that the aunt was the culprit. I do love this show, am loving GHY and SJS tandem but plot wise, I really don't want the "evil twin" scenario. Although, that would explain why there is a picture of a Hee Joo lookalike a year after HEe Joo supposedly died.

A couple points.

- I find Kangwoo (while gentlemanly) very milquetoast when it comes to Joongwon. He's so much more interesting around Yiryung even though he's consistently curbstomping her feelings
- Aunt Woo and VP Sexy Lips are EVERYTHING
- I love everything about Gongshil, the end. (That last crying scene? Incredible. Gong Hyojin is wonderful)

I don't know why but until I read your point number two I never realized how much I love the Aunt and VP Sexy Lips, or well more how rare it is that minor characters are so enjoyable. I usually find myself bored or uninterested, but those two! Awesome.

Yeah. if there's only thing that we've all learned from watching many k-dramas it's that if you're going to leave your side characters undeveloped and there just for the sake of plot device, make them funny. We want some comic relief. Better to laugh then be uninterested. Good Doctor right now has some side characters that i don't give a rats ass about, so when their characters come onscreen i zone out.
Hong sisters are smart by turning uncle and aunt into funny people.

Agreed re KW and YR. She is probably more serious about him than she wants to admit (all this talk about 'seducing the salaryman', as if she were Joo Won from Secret Garden!), and he is probably infatuated with GS rather than truly in love (a-la Coffee Prince's Ahjusshi). They could be cute together - as a couple or at least as friends.

I thought the ghost was a nice/precise metaphor for being enthralled with social position and things you view as valuable because of what they cost.

Tae-Yang said don't worship it. It's just a water pitcher. Yet they continued to revere because of it pricetag.

and Aunt discovered, underneath that facade of refinement is a soul eating deamon

I think it is a metaphor for how everyone, except for Secretary Kim, and Kang Woo is evaluating Tae-Yang's worth.

I like it when hong sisters write the ghosts as metaphors instead of them trying to fulfill a last dying wish. 'cause if you make it short, make it simple.

I recall in one of the recent interviews (which they did in the hotel room for the hotel ghost episode), she does indeed call him Oppa for real.

I think rinka meant tae yang call joong won oppa instead of sajangnim in this drama. not in real life. In real life hyo jin did call so jisub oppa coz he's older than her.

Ahh forgot to say and agree- this is why I watch dramas that stars well seasoned actors who are known for acting and mode their craft for years. Pretty boys are good to look at but actors are to meant to be admired and fantasy about!

Never mind the nutcracker ghost. Gong shil is the best chaebol nutcracker around, refusing to be his Candy when Joong won's acting like a rat king. But then, all that changes ♥

The path to Gong-shil's and Joong-won's love everlasting can't go smoothly. Something is going to happen with Hee-joo and GS. I think out of her love GS will allow HJ to possess her body in order for the truth to be revealed and JW to be freed from the torture of his memories and doubts. Will HJ ever let GS be free in return? Does this seem a likely scenario to anyone else? I certainly am enjoying this show. So grateful for the subtitles but I couldn't resist watching it in the raw I was so anxious for GS. Until next week !

Noooo – I can’t wrap my head or heart around a two-for-one HJ/GS body invasion. Who would JW see or think he was with? HJ can already communicate to JW through GS. Since it’s not possible for HJ to remain in GS’s body as a direction the drama would go, then for HJ to temporarily use GS’s body wouldn’t serve any new purpose. Ghosts. So confusing :)

I see your point. I hope we get some passion and mutual protection and they become a team in discovering the answers. I want to enjoy them TOGETHER. Really appreciate this website. You just can't catch the subtleties through subtitles sometimes. Thank you.

but JW would know it's not GS.

I think all ghosts don't know that when JW touch GS all ghosts disappear. So if ghost HJ don't want to let GS go, then JW would save her. I just hope that ghost HJ don't do anything to GS's body, so that she have a body to come back to.

Honestly, this is clearly where they've been leading the entire series. There is no doubt HJ or whoever this evil twin lady is will possess GS. I don't know if JW will know or if he won't, or if he will know and will have to decide if he wants HJ or GS, but it's gonna happen. Buckle those seat belts now..

" think out of her love GS will allow HJ to possess her body in order for the truth to be revealed and JW to be freed from the torture of his memories and doubts."

Unless the Hong Sisters re-write the rules about how Tae-Yang's ghost nation behaves in Joong-Won presence there is no way that Hee-Joo or Hee-NotJoo can take over Tae-Yang's body and interact with Joong-Won for and extended period of time. No romantic reunion is possible if HeeJee is dead because the moment Joong-Won touches Tae-Yang's possessed body the ghost is expelled. Remember the wife of the pickey-lazy musician. The Hong Sisters have spent more than half the series teaching the audience the rules of possession, to change it now would be weird.

Of courseChinese matchmaker to the dead has hinted at awful possibilities.

The only way the rules can be in place and a ghost successfully steal Tae-Yang's body is if once they are in possession of Tae-Yang's body they run far from Joong-Won.

So the ghost would have to take over Tae-Yang's body and make it look as if Tae-Yang wants to break up with Joong-Won. The body theif would have to run far away where the possibility of running into Joong-Won is nil. There might be a time element, that if the ghost possesses the body for longer than ?? hours they get to keep that body for ever.

Now I do think that Tae-Yang might be conned into turning over her body so that whichever sister is dead might use her body to retrieve the missing necklace. I think she might want to do that for Joong-Won. If Hee-Joo and Hee-NotJoo are in cahoots, the dead one might want to get the necklace so the they living sister can profit, or that they she keeps Tae-Yang's body and they both can profit.

My speculation: since we know, "the living are scarier than the dead" - I think the "twin" may be an obsessed stalker who will bring harm upon GS now that JW has made a declaration. Maybe, she was even responsible for all the past unlucky happenings to JW's cursed marriage partners.

If GS gets knocked out, HJ could enter in order to save her from her "twin".

Just my thoughts.

Yes, then Joong-won can free himself of the "curse", and change/move on, by telling Hee-joo: "Thanks for the memories (at least they lasted longer than one and a half minutes), now you need to leave and give me back the person I love" (ie Gong-shil)!

This is where Secret Garden got a bit too weird for me - what's the point of having your GF survive, but trapped in a man's body?!

But I wonder... every time a ghost is possessing GS, as soon as JW touch her, the ghost is forced out of her. So is that really a threat? O.o

I mean, it doesn't matter then whether the ghost want to keep the body or not....
