Lee Min-ho and Park Shin-hye’s first shoot for Heirs
by girlfriday
Here we go. It seemed like the day would never come, but cameras are rolling. Here’s a sneak peek at stills from the first shoots for SBS’s fall Wednesday-Thursday show Heirs, the trendy drama about the lives of the uber-rich and underage from Secret Garden writer Kim Eun-sook. Lee Min-ho and Park Shin-hye lead the ginormous cast of young stars, who will comprise the 0.1% of the chaebol elite. Well, everyone except the heroine that is.
Because lo and behold, we’ve got our rich hero driving fast cars, and our poor, plucky, hardworking Candy heroine washing dishes to make ends meet. Of course she is. As if anyone expected this writer to deviate from the tried and true Cinderella tale. Guess we’ll just be going from one chaebol/candy pair to the other.
On the upside, I’m really looking forward to the actors working together. If there’s anything we learned from Master’s Sun, it’s that chemistry is really that it-factor in a rom-com that you can’t predict. With a secondary cast a mile long (Kim Woo-bin, Choi Jin-hyuk, Krystal, Kang Min-hyuk, Im Joo-eun, just to name a few) I have no idea what kind of loveline geometry we’re looking at here. Has there ever been a love-dodecahedron in dramaland? Well, whatever the shape, here’s hoping for fireworks.
Heirs premieres October 9 on SBS.

I like that he's a rich guy who wears normal things though! I mean I'm sure his shirt probably cost like $500 buuuut, I mean it doesn't happen very often that rich guy dresses down.
And Lee Min Ho this better be your last high school role. You look like a man at last and you're never gonna pass for a high schooler again after this, lol.

What's super-stupid about this gender poverty inequality is that there's some serious drama in a man trying to make it.
Actually, in the j-drama, Oh, My Dad, the anti-hero is a homeless scientist whose wife left him for being a loser. And he's getting rescued by a rich and capable woman. And I'm watching it.

I see what you're saying, but think the paradigm can be expanded. Drawing the lines in that way reduces men's struggles and suggests their main need is (in a nutshell) to be feminized. Between men and women, our emotional hardwiring is different. I like to see the differences in a complementary way and avoid the trap of broad brushstrokes that could ne misinterpreted to say that because men aren't like women, they're somehow defective.
There is definitely some serious drama in a man trying to make it. But I see it not in the construct of making-it-and-needing-to-learn-emotional-depth. I see the greater story of how hard it is for a man to make it. Made more poignant by the reality that most men define themselves based on their achievements and how well they provide.
Because the male chaebol/scion doesnt need to worry about providing, I'd say the richer story for them is the unique pressures that their position puts on them. First, from the time they're born they're surrounded by people who see and value them for what they have rather than who they are. To protect themselves they adopt some typical coping mechanisms that leave them isolated and lonely. Second, because of the achievements of their forbearers are so vast, it's common for the male descendants to feel deep down like there's no way they can ever measure up, leaving them feeling diminished as a man.
It's difficult for any man to feel like he's underachieved. For the chaebol/scion, unless he's the one chosen to run the family business, or unless he's unusually gifted and can create something great on his own, rather than pursuing a career of mediocre achievements he'll often choose the path of pouring himself into goofing off. He protects himself from underachievement by trying to succeed at little else than expressing his wealth and status. But that lie can't be maintained forever. Because his masculinity carries with it an inherent need to achieve something meaningful, living for the fast life will progressively deepen his insecurities as a man. Outwardly this is expressed as becoming more and more of a jerk in his interactions with others.
These patterns sprout in jr high and begin to take root in high school. Hopefully the writer will explore some deeper topics in this show by unpacking some of the 'whys' for the chaebol stereotypes.

I think the only ones I have seen where the guy is poor, it has always been "Fake Poor" - that is, he is having issues with his chaebol daddy, but ultimately will inherit 97 million shares of the company. Even in the one I do recall (forget name) where he was actually poor, it ended up another one of those birth secret things, where he was actually the CEO's long lost son.

ME TO FLOWEEERRRRR. I'm sorry I have nothing of value to contribute, I am simply contractually obligated to screech whenever someone mentions that drama. Oh, wait maybe I do:
I remember when watching MTF I was struck with how detailed and involved and relatively honest it was about class and wealth. And you're totally right; it's a reverse-Cinderella story in that the heroine considers the hero's being rich to be a turn off and the hero turns away from his wealth. And the rich hero didn't have parents to hinder his relationship, because his wealth was his, not his parents'.

It might in fact be a "power" thing in Korean dramas - women's equality is about 50 years behind the US and Euro on that. It is possible that it might actually offend a bunch of people, especially those more into the "traditional" roles. That might also be why so many of the "strong" women in k-dramas are also evil - giving a not so subtle hint that any woman that is rich on her own got there by being a witch.

I don't think that's exactly it.
More like, these shows are geared towards women and most of us aren't exactly filthy rich.
It's a type of escapism for many of the audience for a prince charming to sweep a women off her feet.
Especially when you consider how many noona type shows there are as well.

I don't know. Noona dramas are relatively new in their popularity (and there are vocal segments of viewers who hate them because of the gender disruptions they suggest) while Cinderella stories have been around in kdramaland forever. I think it has more to do with the Cinderella trope being a tried and true thing that drama writers can always depend on for a story. And while it's cliche, it does give them a template from which they can explore class issues. I mean it's usually very shallowly done, but still.

It's so strange, but my Chinese friends who watch kdramas had no idea what I was talking about when I made a reference to the Candy trope. And then when I hummed the Candy theme song for them trying to jog their memories of the anime, they looked at me like I grew horns. But like, all of my korean friends know the theme song. You're the best Lee Soon shin even made a meta joke about the fact that Soon shin's ringtone was the Candy theme song. Watching Candy Candy in the early 90s was a big part of a my childhood along with Sailor Moon. And both of those series are japanese anime that were just subbed/dubbed into korean. Was japanese anime (even these hugely popular ones) just not as big in China?

I have seen a few recent k-dramas where outright references, more than once, were made about the Candy Girl - Her Legend is one where he specifically implies that Candy Girl was a loser. But I cannot recall the term being used directly in any dramas until just the past year or so.
Not sure, but I think the Chinese version is "Bean Cake Girl", but I could be wrong on that.

I think Joong-won's aunt and her husband in Master's Sun is reverse Cindella, thirty years later. I love them.
But in all seriousness, I don't think I've ever seen one. The most power a woman is ever allowed to have in the relationship is being a few years older. But then he's usually richer, hotter and smarter/more successful. And she has to face all kinds of humiliations due to her reaching "above herself" so that the slight power dynamic she has within the relationship due to her age is mostly overcome by the disadvantages she faces due to those extra years in the eyes of everyone outside the relationship.
Oh wait, there was Yoon Eun-hye's drama with Oska! But that was such a bad drama that I didn't finish it, so I don't know how it turned out...

Well, the numbers are def. overpowered by the opposite dynamics but there have been quite a lot. Still, i get the fascination that the men sorta HAVE to be richer. I seem to be one of the few people out there who found 'Boys Over Flowers' to be offensive and borderline mysogynist. I thought it was bad enough that they took a good, strong heroine and converted her into a some rich boys' tag-along, but then they deliberately crippled her so she could have no dreams of her own and basically had no future other than being the school bullies pet poodle. It turned my my stomach.

wait what the heroine isn't a chaebol heiress?? Well I'm a lot less interested now. I thought this drama was going to be gossip girl-esque and be more glitz-glamour-and-scandals-of-young-hot-rich-teens-who-act-like-spoiled-adults? That was the main selling point for me despite the sprawling it-stars cast; yunno, that this time the heroine will be actually be part of the elite rather than the candy outsider.
UGH. I'm already disappointed Lee Min Hot is playing what sounds like retread of his BoF role (seriously wish this was a college drama. I think I'm gonna need to maybe squint a bit and try reeeaall hard to buy that half the cast are high school students).
Looks like this whole chaebol-and-the-peasant trope in dramaland trope WILL NEVER DIE.

Drama writers can't resist poor but plucky heroines.
I wish they'd write more Blair Waldorfs. Even a Jenny Humphrey would do, since she's a mix of good and bad too.

And i repeat.
The world needs more complex blair waldorfs.
I disagree on the latter. Jenny humphrey annoyed the heck out of me the whole way through, even if she was realistically flawed.

OMG YES.
Has there ever been a Blair waldorf type in kdrama? Bitchy but awesome, as opposed to just being a horrible 2nd lead ala Yeon-ah in You're the best, LSS (May We Never Speak of It Again)? The closest I could think of is KSR's character in secret garden..
This makes me feel nostalgic for GG; can't comment much on Jenny though, I gave up after the third season -couldn't stand the constant merry-go-round of couples in that borderline-incestuous group of friends.
Though that same interchange of pairings could be potentially refreshing if done right in Heirs. At least that'll be a damn sight better than the usual heroine who has a harem of guys inexplicably in love with her cliché

I feel like Krystal might be the Blair Waldorf or at least I could see her pulling that type of judgemental-perfectionist role off. With just a hint of a sensitive soul underneath, lol. I think it would be good for her to try that sort of role, anyway. She'd be the perfect "mean girl".

I really hope she makes a fantastic Blair Waldorf! Seriously, if every male in this drama is in love with PSH's character, I'll puke and give it up.
Elianne
September 10, 2013 at 9:01 PM
Hmm I think she could pull it off but that sensitive mean girl role isn't that uncommon now that I think about it. Like what kay said about suzy in dream high.
But blair isn't just mean, I'm hoping for a character that's also kinda manipulative and snarky and just plain FUN. I don't think I've ever seen that character type in dramaland..

Ahahaha! I really hope not. I don't want this to be a harem type thing at all with PSH and her band of merry admirers and pursuers. Definitely want her to have a male friend (or two! wow! unheard of) and ya know I don't think I would mind a crazy love...shape. Hahaha!
@eli_n
I know! Blair was all of those things and it would be cool to watch Krystal work with a character as complex as that. I think she kinda has that sort of hoity-toity public image, anyway, and she can use that to her advantage!

True. But at least she had some "talent" and had different aspects to her, unlike k-drama second female leads. Basically, some depth.
I think that's why I like Yi Ryung in Masters Sun so much: she's flawed, insane, and knows it! And her love for Kwang Woo is genuine, and heartbreaking.

I was never a religious GG watcher but I liked how early season 1 set Jenny up to be the new Blair.
Making the heroine yet another Candy feels like a missed opportunity. Maybe a long lost relative dies and they're suddenly wealthy? You still get the outsider pov and she's still the plucky girl with the poor background but it would be slightly different.

imo both PSH and LMH are overrated. But PSH is better actor than LMH at least.
I feel like LMH gets away because of his looks/hotness but since I can't feel it I watch for acting and he isn't good at delivering it tbh. He couldn't pull off his last character on faith and in City hunter he was bad and sometimes good depending of the scene.
His crying scenes also lack so much I can't feel much
PSH lacks at being funny?/bright? IDK but she looks fake when she tries to act as happy/birght girl, but she is good at crying scenes though...

I don't know about his other performances, but I don't think we can pin Faith on him entirely. My take was that he was just doing what was asked of him. And because the show was so thematically schizophrenic, having to portray the character in the center of it all left him floundering artistically. To make his character come more to life, LMH would have had to played the character in a way that was just as schizophrenic as the show.
Since his career is so young, I wonder if it's unfair to say it's entirely his fault that he couldn't figure out a way to relate to Crazy. He would have needed some good directorial guidance for that.
This may be completely off-base since I don't speak Korean and can't fully understand the nuances of his performances. But from physical performances alone, it seems like he does his strongest work under a couple of scenarios: 1) when he relates to his characters at a personal level; and when he doesn't relate to the character 2) when he has chemistry with the other actors/characters. In these cases, he just seems somehow stronger at playing opposite other performances in-the-moment, than creating a performance independent of what's going on around him. Does that make sense?
Reflecting on it, I suppose that the great actors can understand, sketch and portray their characters in a relatively independent way. But that's not to say that there shouldn't be room in the landscape for enjoyable entertainers who do well when placed in the right environments. Bob Hope comes to mind. He never was a deep actor. His performances were always in lighthearted dramatic fare and he acted the part of himself in every single role. Despite all that, he was well loved throughout his long successful career because as an entertainer he made people happy.
If LMH carves out a career on sheer ability to make women swoon, what's the harm in that?

Actually, you are not the only one. I've read through these comments and the last few sets of comments on other Dramabeans entries on this series and I am pretty sure that NO ONE is impressed with the drama premise. Except maybe the kdrama executive who thought 'Sword and Flower' and 'Gu Family Chronicle' and '7th Level Civil Servant' were such great premises that he greenlighted them without a finished SCRIPT OUTLINE!!!!
He must have had asperations to rise to the level of the Hollywood execs who thought 'John Carter of Mars', 'Battleship', and 'The Lone Ranger' were such fabulous ideas that they also didn't need a coherent script to make money.

I usually like her with her male costars, but if that CF was any indication, we should worry - she was positively crackling in the Jang Geun-seok version of her Etude House CFs, but with LMH.....nothing.
I'll really feel burned if that turns out to be the case and then to add insult on injury she ends up having great chemistry with Kim Woo-bin (who of course will not get the girl).
SoEul were the true OTP of BOF, which is so funny because those characters were only good in the Korean drama (thanks to Bummie and So-eun of course) - in every other version, they are just annoying.

I'm also disappointed that this is a chaebol/candy story and that PSH's character is an outsider instead of one of the elite. I wanted Korean Gossip Girl (but better written, hopefully)! Instead she'll be all downtrodden and ostracized by all the rich characters except Lee MinHo's hero who despite his better judgment will start to come to her rescue because he's falling in love with her. It's just so typical. I hope they've got some kind of surprise up their sleeves because the cast might get me to check it out but if the story's not there, they won't be enough to keep me watching.

Poor Park Shin Hye, working hard to make a living. Still I think she's a better Candy than Gu Hye Sun was -- I'm still interested to see how the story plays out.

Uff, sorry to say but I skip. I thought after City Hunter and Faith he'll stop the Junpyoesque stereotype and play mature roles more but no it doesn't happen.

I want to see Lee Min Ho in a medical drama next where he plays the top doctor in the Surgery department in love with the pretty OR nurse married to the Chief of Staff in the hospital. Yes!!!!

I was hoping for a chaebal prince/princess tale, the Kdrama version of Chuck and Blair.
I'm all disappointed now.

I'm very conflicted in this! I don't want Master's Sun to be over, but I cannot wait to see Kim Woo Bin and Kang Ha Neul!!!!!

I think I rewatched Faith too many times, because now I find Lee Min-ho a lot more attractive than I used to. I'm honestly surprised, guys. When did this happen???

I will say that I love the way he's styled in these shots. I hope they stick with laid back fashion choices for him instead of the uber-ostentatious "Look At Me I'm Rich" clothes from BOF.
I miss the hair though, I kinda liked him in the perm, as ridiculous as I was. And this short hair does nothing for me. Plus, what are they gonna cut when it's time for the Mid-Season Makeovers or after the inevitable Time Jump? He'll have to sport an army buzz.
