Yoon Eun-hye considers time-travel drama Mi-rae’s Choice

More casting possibilities are in the headlines with Yoon Eun-hye (I Miss You) reportedly taking a look at KBS’s upcoming time-travel drama Future Choice, which we can now start calling Mi-rae’s Choice instead because, as expected, the heroine’s name totally IS Mi-rae. (Mirae = future.) Ah, wordplay. (Although, this one was so flatly obvious that it almost doesn’t even qualify as a legit pun.)

I’d heard vague whisperings of Yoon being courted for the show, but now that the news has made its way into the official news cycle, perhaps she’s closer to signing on. Her management company confirmed on August 12 that she has received the offer and is looking at it favorably, though the final decision has yet to be made.

This drama sounds very heroine-centric (as if the title weren’t clue enough) as the main character Mi-rae manages to find a way to travel back in time (details on the method are yet undisclosed) to give her past self life advice. Uh, this seems like a bad idea in SO MANY obvious ways (self-inflicted poofing! Have we learned nothing from Back to the Future?) that I am really curious to know how Mi-rae thinks she can get away with this. Because to even consider this plan, she is either very clever or, um, the other thing.

The present-day timeline is set in a broadcast station, with Mi-rae employed as a maknae writer. Up for a leading role is Lee Dong-gun (Smile Again, Lovers in Paris, Sweet 18), who would play a broadcast announcer, while Jung Yong-hwa (You’ve Fallen For Me, You’re Beautiful) had been previously announced as considering the role of a PD character.

It’s unclear whether Jung Yong-hwa is still with the show—he’d never confirmed in the first place and the latest news involving him dates back a month—or whether he would be relegated to second lead status. The initial reports described his PD role as a main character who has a loveline with the heroine, but I can’t imagine Lee Dong-gun not getting top billing in this scenario. I can picture Jung playing the second lead who still gets some romantic plotlines, but will he be content to play second fiddle? We’ll have to wait and see how it shakes out.

Lee Dong-gun has been out of army duty for over a year, but his last drama was 2008’s MBC drama with Kim Sun-ah, When Night Comes (also called Every Night). It’s been so long since I’ve seen him in anything, but I think I’m cool with the idea of him and Yoon Eun-hye being romantic partners. For one, she has mad chemistry with practically everyone… though admittedly I can’t quite picture her romancing Jung Yong-hwa. Then again, she and Yoo Seung-ho made it work. Kind of. You know, if murderous insanity can be considered part of an effective screen romance.

Mi-rae’s Choice, to be written by Beethoven Virus and The King 2 Hearts writer Hong Jin-ah, will be a Monday-Tuesday drama to follow Good Doctor, which puts its premiere in October.

I hope to god Lee Dong-gun is the lead....I love Yonghwa's music and he seems sweet, but apart from a surprisingly good turn in one episode of You're Beautiful (as in, Jang Geun-seok and Park Shin-hye didn't have to do all the work in those scenes) acting is really not his calling.

Totally agree. Fortunately, it appears Yonghwa - or his management company, for the fangirl version - will accept nothing less than a lead role. So we may escape his wooden acting one more time. I am really hoping that YEH can bring something out in Lee Dong Gun; Kim Sun Ah definitely failed, because he did a total sleep-walk through When It's At Night. It was so obvious that he did not want to be there.

I'm so, so, so glad to hear of Lee Dong Gun making his way back onto the small screen.

I wondered whether he was going to leave the business forever after his younger brother was murdered back in 2008 (?).

I think When It's At Night must have been around that time, maybe his project right after the murder. It was the drama that made me dislike Kim Sun Ah and wonder whether the writer had gotten a lobotomy.

Hopefully, this one will be better.

Totally agree on YEH's recent choice of dramas - she really needs to get the bandwagon of winning dramas instead of loser or way-too-much-sobbing dramas (ie Lie To Me, I Miss You).

This kinda reminds me a bit more of Nine than of QIHM? Though this is based on a vague impression of the story in Nine.

I guess I can understand Jung Yong Hwa's wanting to push for a lead role for himself but honestly.. There are better actors out there gunning for lead roles too. I still feel like he hasn't really proven himself to be a really good actor - Heartstrings was a nice fuzzy drama but not really a piece of work you'd want to put on your CV to say 'hey I'm lead role-worthy'.

And.. I've learnt not to be attracted to a drama based on the writer's CV.

Oooh, you must look for and watch Sweet 18. It remains one of my most favourite dramas. Great chemistry and lots of cuteness between him and Han Ji Hye. They became OTP for a while, then broke up. Poor chap - he was devastated when his younger brother got killed in Sydney.

I like this writer's works. But URGH I'm sick and tired of word puns on dramas' titles! It used to be funny, now it's just overdone.

Jung Yong-hwa is perfect Second Lead material... but not so much Lead material. I just don't think he has it in him.

I keep waiting to hear about specific actors coming back with new dramas (preferably as leads), namely: Lee Ji Ah, Min Hyo-rin, Jung So Min, Shin Dong Wook, Lee Jung Jae...

Did you know that Lee Jung Jae was rumored to be the original choice for Man from the Stars? Apparently the male lead character is actually a university lecturer/professor and the female lead is a student.

I'm pretty sure Lee Dong Gun is first lead because his character's name was originally Kim Sun Taek (as in Mi-Rae's Sun Taek... hah, even more puns) but was changed in later articles to be Kim Shin... and also because, y'know, he's Lee Dong Gun. Synopses change all the time so I wouldn't be surprised if Hong Jin Ah floated an old/stop-gap version while waiting for a more senior actor to confirm.

On the other hand, if JYH is the male lead in this one or has substantial screen time, I give up on K dramas and the need to appeal to Korean and Japanese tweens. I'm DONE, do you hear me?!

I don't know that I call myself a fan of YEH, but I do think she is very talented and has chemistry with a lot of actors (if it makes sense to say that; I think it's possible to recognize talent and chemistry in others, even if it doesn't specifically appeal to you). I've never seen a Lee Dong-Gun drama (is Lovers in Paris worth the time investment?), so I might check this one out.

As for Yong-Hwa, I'm not getting involved in that mess anymore :). There's been so much drama with him and Heirs, him and this show, fan wars about his motivations and his lack or possession of acting skills that I'm kind of tapped out at this point. If he's in, fine, if he's not, also fine. He won't really influence my decision to watch.

Also (small voice of shame) . . .I rather liked "Lie to Me." Was it a technically good drama? Probably not. Did they run out of plot toward the end and basically half-ass the last few episodes? Most definitely. But it was sort of engaging and entertaining, and I liked YEH and Kang Ji-Hwan together.

I will second you on Lie To Me, as not that bad. It definitely faltered but did have it's good points. And YEH and Kang Ji-hwan is a pairing that I would not mind getting to see again.

I liked it, too. There were times when it was really good and she and Kang Ji-Hwan worked well together. I think it's one of those dramas where the end is really not-so-good and it colors the rest of the drama.

Of course, it was something like the third K-drama I ever watched so I might feel differently if I was watching it now.

Eh, LTM is the typical bad K-drama/romcom - storyline full of cliches, stereotypical characters and inane plotlines that don't go anywhere and are abruptly dropped or have some ridiculous happening to tie up a plot point.

It belongs with "Secret Garden", "Big" and maybe RTP (it, at least had the Joseon Power Rangers) on my list of K-romcom infamy.

To be honest, that describes quite a lot of K-dramas though, doesn't it? Even the ones with more sophisticated production values ("Shark," I'm looking at you). But there can still be entertainment value to such shows, which I felt Lie to Me had (up until the end when they gave up entirely).

Yoon Eun Hye AND time travelling, oh goodie. I hope she signs on, and if she does, I hope it doesn't disappoint me like her I miss you. I want more fun dramas with her, like Goong and Coffee Prince, dramas where she shines. Take care of the young lady and I miss you were bad choices, though, so if this drama is like those, I hope she takes a pass.

I think I Miss You was not a bad choice as it was a solidly written script. I have watched all the episodes and I could attest to its coherence. If your preference are fun dramas then I would understand why you would not like it. But it certainly does not fall under the category of bad choices for YEH.

Take Care of the Young Lady, on the other hand, was a choice based on the original script which unfortunately was changed midway and was objectively unfair to YEH but the pro that she is, she honored her contract to the end.

I agree with you bibimbap. I Miss You was a good choice.

YEH succeeded in her first melodrama. Acting wise YEH had proven that she can do other genres. I'm so happy that she did IMY.

YEH had the amazing chemistry with her most of her drama partners, including Park Yoo Chun.

YEH picked Take Care of Agasshi because of the original script.

She actually did a really good job in I Miss You, it let her show a range that none of her previous dramas brought out (YEH playing bitter and angry was amazing, even if the drama was buckets of tears).

Even if the drama itself wasn't fantastic, it was solid and her performance couldn't really be faulted - I feel like she grew as an actress from the experience. And I'd really like to see her bring some of that improved/expanded range into her newer roles, so I'm excited for this.

has jung yong-hwa even earned lead material status yet? (i don't think so). even second lead seems enough for him. personally, i don't think he has what it takes to be leading man material. i've never considered him particularly good looking, he's not tall, not particularly charismatic, and his acting ability is limited. not saying that he can't improve and totally shock us someday—it's happened before. but he's gotta be willing to work from the bottom and prove himself first.

he's just not a suzy. suzy has other qualities (hard to define) that make up for her acting. so he's got to work his way up. he'd be better off picking solid supporting roles and doing well at those. heirs hasn't aired yet, but i'm interested to know which supporting role he reportedly passed up in his quest for a leading role elsewhere.

I'd actually consider him and Suzy about the same level, with a slight edge, acting-wise. Their variety/idol personalities are not something I know much about, so based purely on what I see on-screen, all I see is pretty people who really can't act and both have a long way to go before they're even fit for proper second lead roles, forget about first lead (Park Shin-hye did all the heavy lifting in Heartstrings but at least that was adequate enough to let him not suck too much in comparison, but watching Lee Seung-gi with her in Gu Family Book got kind of boring thanks to the non-acting and non-chemistry. I actually wonder how bad Yonghwa would be if he worked opposite another leading lady besides PSH, now)

Why does everyone talk of Yong Hwa like he's the proud one not wanting anything but the first lead? He said he was willing to do Colin in AGD if Jong Hyun didn't. Considering he's the second lead here, it's obviously NOT him that turned down Heirs in the first place. Also, Lee Dong Gun is in the same agency as him, so it's unlikely "he" will be the one not "content to play second fiddle".

Also, it's awkward to me that he's considered not like "Suzy". His debut AND the first break was in You are beautiful. He's not some idol that jumped on the acting bandwagon using his fame. As a nobody, he had auditioned for Shin Woo, got the role, and rose to stardom BY ACTING. Whether or not you liked his performance in it, that shows people actually found him charming in a drama (actually a lot more when they didn't know he was a singer). I remember all the drama fansites buzzing and spazzing about this new fresh face. I also found his acting to be much improved and sensible in Heartstrings despite the terrible script. Personally looking forward to his role here, I think the younger guy character would suit him quite well.

YEH and LDG chemistry will be great, they have been a singing project together sing about Salad Song, and LDG was part of FNC Ent which Ying Hwa also part of FNC management.
Just give chance to JYW to exploring his act skill, maybe with sunbae like YEH and LDG, he could improve better.
Trust the writer, cause I think his/her lastest piece King 2 Heart was very good result even it rating wasn't good compare from Rooftop Prinve, but it because the same timing to Idol drama :D

Not a fan of YEH but I liked The King 2 Hearts a lot so I might give this a try. Hopefully this is just as good as the writer's last drama.

I'm not really like LDG but he's not bad, just always act in the same charracter that make me doesn't see him special but I see him in many interesting drama: Lovers in Paris, Sweet 18 n Stained Glass. So I think I will check it
Really love Stained Glass,............love Kim Sung Soo as Park Ki Tae

why are people assumed Yonghwa only wants to play the male lead?he never indicated so
he's level headed and he knows his capability,he's okay playing the second lead

the issue with Heirs is actually between FNC and the drama production and it's solved by minhyuk addition and most probably FNC will produce the drama OST

Lee Dong Gun is actually in the same agency as Yonghwa,so most likely FNC lobbied LDG for the lead role after they got Yonghwa in the drama

YEH is a great kisser and LDG is a great kisser and if we get both of them together, we'd be getting great kissing scenes to rival Cruel City's. But how does time travel fit into this drama? Let's just skip it and have a simple plot with lots of eye contact, abs and pouty misunderstandings. Oh, and kissing, of course. And maybe throw in a bonus of LDG singing lustily in a hot bubbling tub.

LUUUUURVE Lee Dong Gun. He had me with Lovers in Paris. Heartbreak. Then, had me cackling with Sweet 18. Then, turned on with Changing Partners where he manhandled Um Jung Hwa, a woman 11 years his senior. Sizzle.

That man had a BOD to die for BEFORE he went into the army, so I can only imagine what he must look like now.

Come back, come back.

If this does pan out I'm actually excited to see YEH and LDG as leads together. I loved him in LIP and broke my heart when he didn't get the girl. I also haven't watched any of YEH's work after Goong so hopefully this one will push thru.

Omg... the show is a copy of " Nine time traveller"...
the story baseline is almost the same. In Nine time traveller, Lee jin wook is a news announcer & the actress is his maknae. LJW time traveller back to prevent his father passed away.
Its a fantastic show for year 2013. I recommend everyone to watch it!!!

wonder how the writer will tell " future choice" story out from the shadow of "Nine time traveller".

If it's a time-travel story, I'll be so there. Hoping this doesn't turn out like a kind of Peggy Sue Got Married PLUS Proposal Daikusen plot. Having fallen for the wrong/poor/etc guy, she goes back in time to change matters, etc. Wasn't there a Japanese drama last season about a man who tried to give advice to his younger self?
