Man From Another Star courts Jeon Ji-hyun
by girlfriday
Kim Soo-hyun and Jeon Ji-hyun together again? For an entire drama? This could get interesting. Word is that the new SBS aliens-time-traveling-through-Joseon drama Man From Another Star is courting The Thieves co-stars for an onscreen reunion. The drama is still many moons away (it’s slated for winter) so it’s just a round of casting offers at this point, but the possibility of Jeon Ji-hyun’s return to dramaland is getting a lot of attention.
Given that their first project together was such a hit and the fact that their loveline in the film was short and sweet enough to keep people wanting more, it would be a smart move to score them both. Not that wrangling two movie stars back to dramaland is an easy feat. Jeon Ji-hyun’s last drama was 1999’s Happy Together, and she has since been sticking exclusively to movies for the past 14 years. I thought they had great chemistry in The Thieves, and wouldn’t mind seeing them get their happy ending in a drama, that’s for sure.
The new project from the writer of You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly and the PD of Tree With Deep Roots is about an alien who travels back in time and lands in Joseon, and then lives through the next four hundred years to the present day where he falls in love with an actress described as reckless and brazen. Oh, the wacky. There are so many ways this could be awesome, starting with two solid leads to anchor the romance. What are the odds that a time traveling alien sageuk will be the ticket?
Man From Another Star is being planned for a December premiere on SBS.

I strongly doubt she'll say yes - it would be a major step back for her after finally achieving some level of critical success with the Berlin File - perhaps finally bidding adieu to years of being known as a CF queen with a nose for successful movies and leading men (talent? Not so much).

I don't think it's a step back. Byung hun did Iris before he went back to Hollywood. Kong hyo-jin interspersed between small and big screen. Ditto with Ko Hyun jung. I just hope she will never consider doing a tv drama as a step back on her career. I would be very very sad

dont forget shin ha kyun, he piled up alot of critically acclaimed stuff before even starting to starr in dramas.
i believe its still not really on-par prestige wise, but tv and film are closer together in korea than anywhere else.
there really shouldnt be a difference, its just two forms of telling stories and some are even more suited to be told in longer and episodic form.
not to forget filming dramas is probably harder on actors and crew most of the time.

I just couldn't finish Berlin File. It was boring. How's the ending to that movie? Is it worth me going back to finish it?
On the other hand, their relationship in The Thieves was adorable in the sense that his character had the biggest crush on her character and she couldn't responded back the way he wanted.
I would be surprise if Jeon Ji Hyun went back to dramaland. She's doing quite well with CF and movies. Her latest movies have been hits. And I much rather watch her on movies than drama. Drama doesn't really showcases the full potential of actors/actresses as they're on time limits since it's air at the same time as shooting. Movies allow the actors/actresses to study the character in a good amount of time and they can perform the character better.

Berlin File was terrible. Didnt understand what was going on in the film except that there were lots of kicking and fighting and gun shooting. Definitely not her best project.

so what really would induce JJH to come back to the small screen? Their pairing in Theives was unexpectedly nice but I'm still hesitant to get excited.. we've had rumors of JJH' possible tv return before and it hasn't worked out

Exactly what I was thinking - there's no chance of this being much more than fluff (esp. given the author's previous works), so why would she bite?

but I think the writer's You who rolled in unexpectedly was quite good. Plus the PD is great too!
I just saw Gianna Jun in an episode of Master Chef celebrity edition. I think she's having a thirst of being in a small screen too! Bite it, bite it!!!

i am so on board with any far fetched, freaky premises, those are valuable even if they dont end up being good.
but i do have some issues with the deep rooted tree PD, i just cant get used to his style. he directs one great scene, then stuffs in some random shots that dont tie together at all and generally tries too hard to bring across dramatic points.

The lead male character is an alien... isn't that slightly more problematic for the story than the actress being older than the actor? And, quite frankly, I'm more surprised if the actress isn't older than the actor these days. Hey, whatever works, right? As long as it doesn't approach Choi Kang Hee/Joo Won and Kim Hee Sun/Lee Min Ho levels of awkwardness, there'll be no complaints from me.

YES!!! two of my most favourite actors!!! I've been a fan of Jeon Ji Hyun since Daisy, My Sassy Girl, Windstruck...etc... and seen and appreciated almost all of her films. I adore her acting and love her looks.
I LOVE Kim Soo Hyun since 'Will it it snow in Christmas' and especially been his fan from DreamHigh!
Also lately I love this older actress and younger actor combination...

I'm excited with Kim Soo-hyun back to small screen.
The storyline sounds awesome but I don't like the previous writer's work, I know it got high ratings but it was B.O.R.I.N.G
Can we have other options for the female lead. Hah. Just saying ;-)

Have you seen You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly? Is it really boring? I've been downloading it for days, and about to give it up if it wasn't for the high rating. But then high rating will never guarantee if it's good or not, boring or not, right?

It was just OK.
The plot kindda predictable, watchable with passable acting but forgettable drama.
Kim Nam Joo won her Daesang for this drama.

Are the aliens immortal? :-)
Or 400 years on earth equals to 1-2 years on their planet?
I guess i have to wait for the drama to air to get my answer.

As long as JJH keeps getting film roles and CF contracts, I wouldn't hold my breath in her coming back to drama-land.
Why go thru the pain of getting little sleep when one can make more $$ doing films and CFs and not be exhausted?

This is definitely an interesting pairing as can be seen from everyone's response! If it does turn out to be true, most likely they will have to give her a larger part to play.

perhaps the fact that she's portraying an actress will speak more to jeon ji hyun = more character connection, more will translate to the screen?
But yeah, i get what you're saying. Why an actress out of all the jobs in the world. But then i think about it and i'm so tired of those candy-esque heroines that plague kdramaland.

you know how LONG I SCREAM when I read this. Freaking love Jun Ji Hyung. Freaking love her, nuff said.
The love line in The Thieves is sure such a tease, and somehow heartbreaking, somehow bittersweet, somehow too much FEELS
I'm having to much feels I don't even know what I'm talking.
When I found out Lee Bo Young is the female lead with Lee Jong Suk, I thought I couldn't get any more feels, but now JUN JI HYUN. MORE FEELS. Definitely more FEELS.
Jun Ji Hyun and Lee Bo Young have been my favorite actress with their sassy acting and beauty. And to have them with younger actor is... ANOTHER FEELS..
Please, don't drop this ;; I'm begging anyone out there, don't drop this

Aww..!! How unfortunately...in fact, I was expecting that actress Kim So Eun was supposed to be with him in this drama....but, pfow! It didn't happens now. Oh well. Aha, I still haven't watched that movie "The Thieves" yet & it's a good opportunity for Jeon Ji Hyun to work hard in her "first" drama after she always did in movies for a long time.
I really hope that Kim So Eun will able to come back in a romance-comedy drama somedaaay, but not weekend dramas at mostly, hopefully so.

Haha, Yenicall and Zampano together again? XD
Sad when Zampano got carted off tho, he was so freakin' hot and sexy when he his hair was slicked up and was wearing black. XD
Please Gianna take this~!!!
BTW, if I take the premise into the storyline (alien who travels back in time and lands in Joseon, and then lives through the next 400 years to [2013]), then that would mean Kim Soo-hyun's alien lands sometime in the 1600's (but not exactly 1613 per se, the 5th year of Prince Gwanghae's rule), which would mean King in question would be from Seonjo to Sukjong.
