Jung Yong-hwa up for time travel series

Jung Yong-hwa is reportedly considering another drama role after his last one fizzled (buh-bye, Heirs), and it’s a drama I’m actually quite interested in hearing more about. Called Future Choice, the miniseries comes from one-half of the other Hong sisters writing partnership, who penned The King 2 Hearts and Beethoven Virus.

Only the elder sister, Hong Jin-ah, is behind this one, but I’m willing to hold off on judgment of whether the lack of the other will be a bad thing. Future Choice is yet another time-slip drama (…pause to let groans fade), which means it’s rather behind the curve. But you know, if the time travelers of the past year have proven anything, it’s that premise alone means little—it’s the execution that’ll make or break.

Future Choice is set in the broadcast television world, with a PD and writer as main characters. Jung Yong-hwa would play the handsome and talented PD who is a series lead, though it sounds like it’s the heroine who’s at the center of the show: The plot gets going when she, a broadcast writer, meets her past self and starts giving her(self) life advice. Eek! Have you never seen Back to the Future? Remember how he nearly goes poof? (I half-expect them to name her Mi-rae, too, to make it extra punny; mi-rae is future, and would make the title also read Mi-rae’s Choice.)

The plot has clear similarities to other wrinkle-in-time dramas like Nine (they’re broadcast anchors there), particularly given that in Nine the hero was also on a quest to purposefully change time. That’s the opposite of most of our shows in this category, like Dr. Jin, Queen In-hyun’s Man and Faith, where the characters were wary of messing with history and altering the future/present. Should make for an intriguing exploration of the heroine’s motives and crises. Because you don’t just go about screwing with your own past without running into crises.

Future Choice will be a Monday-Tuesday drama on KBS to follow Good Doctor, which puts its premiere in October. Jung Yong-hwa has received the offer and is currently “positively considering” it.

Fail or succeed, I'm glad to see him doing a grown-up role. LMH falling back into a HS role, to me is a disservice to his acting. Yes, I know, before you jump, they are trying to attract the younger audience but really? HS?

College student would be much better huh? Sometime I wish they can do college students a favor too "Pout". HS is fun and all, but we do grow up. As for this drama, I won't be watching it. Not a fan of the Hong Sisters. I find them overrated and boring. As much as I LOVE Cha Seung Won, I dropped Greatest Love because It was boring for me. and BIG? I LOVE Gong Yoo, He's One fine specimen of a man but couldn't even finish episode 1.

I don't understand why that would make a difference. She did helped write these dramas that I dropped so I'm still on the fence for her. I've yet to watch any of the drama you've listed. Although I did wanted to watch Beethoven for Kim Myung-Min, but scared because I don't want to waste my time and then be disappointed in the end. But maybe for those who've already watched it, How was it? Does she have a better penmanship than her younger sister?

Well I guess I was wrong. *Facepalm* lol

There are two pair Hong sisters, ones who wrote Big, Greatest Love and upcoming Two Weeks.

And the one who will work this Future Choice isn't one of that Hong sisters. But one of Hong sisters who wrote King 2 Hearts and Beethoven Virus. So obviously you mentioning Big and Greatest have no relevant at all with this Future Choice's Hong sisters.

I now know that (Thanks everyone). I didn't realize that there was two set of Hong Sisters, in that I apologize for jumping to conclusion.

Two Weeks is not written by the Hong Sisters, but instead by So Hyeon Kyeong who wrote Brilliant Legacy, Prosecutor Princess, 49 Days & Seo-Young My Daughter.

0

As Jannie said, The other Hong sisters aren't writing Two Weeks.

They are instead writing upcoming Master's Sun starring So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin which is a horror-romance drama....

sorry but you're mistaken, or the article is. the writer of Heirs where LMH is in HS is none other that Kim Eun Sook the writer of secret garden, city hall and a GMD. she is great and i will be watching the drama because of her. The Hong sister on the other hand are writting a drama which is currently airing called Master's Sun. I am much of a fan of their, but they are good and this drama for me is their finest work yet.

I concur about LMH new series Heirs. I would like to see him do more than adult roles and college would be better than HS. I started watching K-dramas with Faith and was impressed with him. The target audience may be younger but even they grow up. I read his comment on another site, maybe here, that he prefers to do "heavier, more defined roles" when he is older. Oh well, guess I'll wait til he grows up! Love the drama beans site! This is my favorite place for news and recaps! Love the podcasts, too! Also love the comments. Thanks everyone for the great time! PS. I just finished watched BBF and loved him in that so hopefully Heirs will deliver.

Then his management is cray-cray. He will never be one of the best idols to turn actor - first off, I thought their conceit was that they were a "real band," not an idol group (at least that's what they used to say, although that is many promotional dollars ago); secondly, having seen his sincere woodenness for two shows now, I do not think he is going to improve much.
A few people can act well, many more can act a little, and some people cannot act at all, and he falls into the latter category. I am sure he is a fine human being and a fine singer and just as cute as a basketful of kittens. but he can't act. I wonder how many shows he will ruin before his management - or the clueless backers - give up on the idea.

He's a good singer and a talented musician (something that is not always true, of idol groups) and I love him, but his acting is terrible.

He sort of managed in Heartstrings, with Park Shin-hye pulling all the emotional weight all he had to do was look cute and smile softly sometimes, but anything more substantial is beyond him for the mo.

And I hear KBS wants Yoon Eun-hye for the lead in this drama. For the love of god, I hope she doesn't take it.

I find it depressing that he's being offered the lead role. I'm not going to say he shouldn't act – I think it's alright to want to try out things and improve – but, given his past performances, he shouldn't be the lead or even second lead in dramas.

I don't understand it, and I'm sad for no-name actors that have better skills but lose out because roles get snatched away by idols that have no or little acting talent but a large fanbase that doesn't care about quality in drama or film.

0

@Nadia - if that was a reference to Lee Yubi, I couldn't agree more.

She blew Mary-sue - I mean, Suzy - out of the water without even appearing to try, and all the fans bleating about how the director, writer, LSG etc are all to blame for Suzy's performance need to take a reality check and have a look at the other women in the drama, who performed under the exact same conditions and still did better even as rookies.

Well, this is interesting. We really didn't have a good idea of why he dropped Heirs. But, if they had another show where he could be a lead, I can see where that would seem to be a better offer. I do really like him and think he is multi-talented, however, I don't think he is ready for a lead and with his other commitments, I don't know how he could devote time to improving his acting skills.

If I had a choice, I'd rather see Choi Jin Hyuk or another more seasoned actor in the role...provided that it is a good role.

I loved Nine and well, the parallels are a little much. I hope they execute this well.

But I do agree about the seasoned actor. Yonghwa is cute but his cardboard acting is so infuriating sometimes even when you feel he's really trying, which makes it worse.

Also, Nine only worked for me because of the strings theories. And I still think there was a late plot change for the great amount of makjangery at the latter half. I fear it was that DUI stuff.

I love Yong Hwa to pieces... But I also know he is not a strong actor (yet?), plus he has a lot of stuff coming up with the band. So yeah, I don't know if this is a good idea. Maybe a supporting role or something, but a lead role? Too much responsibility and acting wise, he is not the best option out there. I would love to see him back on the screen, but I more inclined to watch him on let's say... Running Man? As an addition to the cast? Someday? (I love his variety-self. A girl can dream.)

I agree with your comment.

I can also understand him dropping out of Heirs - just the thought of him acting with Lee Min Ho is a tad scary, all of Yonghwa's acting deficiencies would be exposed. It's one thing to be in a nice, mid-range drama but the Heirs profile is just SO high for everyone involved.

I want to cut him a break - he's a strong songwriter and musician and he's got to be aware of the successes his fellow band mates have had in their prior and ongoing dramas. They all get along so well and kid around with each other, to the point where they've publicly stated that of all of them, Yonghwa is the weakest actor. Eeep! Nothing like putting unintentioned pressure on a guy...

Crossing my fingers for the guy. And yes! He needs to become a regular on RM, if only to make me happy!!

Anywho, suddenly I am sad that jung yong hwa didn't take up his role in heirs because i think he fits better there than he does here. This is where i'm going back to the NOOO. I wish the best for these sisters in having a great director, great cast, just good things all around but this casting news kind of deflates my excitement.
I don't know. The guy simply just does not float my boat, and is one of the reasons why i dropped heartstrings. Oddly enough, i wasn't as bothered with him in You're beautiful, probably because he played 2nd lead(where he should still be).

Gotta agree that whether this involves time travel or not doesn't really matter. i loved Nine all the same even with the time travel factor. Personally am neutral on Yonghwa but I would say give him a chance? I was pleasantly surprised by Seul Ong's acting in the recently concluded Mandate of Heaven. Maybe one just needs a better part, a better director to guide him and more experience in acting. Practise makes perfect? =)

he should do a comedy instead of heavy drama

not comedy, but rom-com , in rom-com mostly doesn't really need comedic expression, if pure comedy it will be really hard for him

I like him even if he is still blocky when it comes to acting. I wonder if he's improved?

Anyone know this web series called "Dating Advice for My Future Self"? The plot reminds me of that, lol. Except she gets all her tips from texts from her future self and not actual time traveling. Pretty cute.

I like this guy. He's not my cup of tea in looks but he has a certain charm. I liked him in You're Beautiful. All that said, I don't see him as lead role material. I think he's fine for 2nd lead in certain roles. He'd do well to carve himself a niche as a supporting role character actor.

I cant say I'm surprise. This is the future of dramaland. Idol actors with very limited to no acting skills headlining dramas while promising actors play second fiddle.

I hope he takes this role. I think he'd do well. Of course, that's just my personal preference talking. I adore Jung Yong-hwa. I think he has potential to be a good actor, if he wasn't so wooden.

I have a particular fondness for Yong-Hwa so I'm glad to see he turned down Heir's. I think his acting will improve, and so much of this type of show rests on the directors ability to get the most out his/her actors I think it's hard to say how it will turn out at this point. He has a wonderful stage presence, but is much more low key in interviews so I'm thinking there is some basic ability there. I hope he doesn't wear himself out with the music and concert schedule as well as the drama schedule. I'd hate to see him burn out

This premise reminds of the Korean movie Project Makeover. The lead woman in that also traveled back and tried to give advice to her younger self. Didn't go so well :) She didn't undo her own existence, but ultimately she couldn't change what actually happened, just when. It'll be interesting to see how they play with consequences and just what can really be changed.

I love Yonghwa like crazy and as a musician there's no denying his great talent, which is one of the main reasons I like him so much, and he has a great personality, but I agree his level of talent in acting is far from how it is in music. I will still watch the drama because I'm a huge fan, and unlike how some people describe his acting, I don't cringe or anything watching it. I feel they exaggerate a bit, or maybe watching other super talented actors has raised their standards, but it would've been a good idea for Yonghwa to take the second lead or something other than the main and gradually get bigger and bigger roles if he shows potential or improvement.
Aside from that, he's also really busy with music, having two tours (one of them which is a world tour) and an upcoming album with CNBLUE, so I hope he's able to manage all of it and it isn't too hard on his health.
Good luck :)

There's a whole heap of people that have proven themselves worthy for a long time and they are still getting side roles, but someone like him with only two real performances, one underwhelming and the other atrocious, are simply handed lead roles in big projects like it's nothing. The distaste is not just because he's an idol, but because he's painful to watch. If it is true about Yoon Eun Hye dropping this, I say good riddance. She would have been pulling all the weight and babysitting this guy. It appears he's doing well as a musician so why not just stick to that or at least start from the ground up like everyone else if he's serious. Trying to jump in at a level he has no place in is just going to embarrass him again. Male Suzy/Yoona.

ikr, the production must atleast cast a real actor to be the lead, there are so many underrated actors that deserved a spotlight in k.ent..

I 'm a CN blue fan , and i adore Yong hwa ! Freaking love him ! I could fangirl about him for days ! Brilliant singer and really worthy band leader !

But seriously even if he's a leader , he souldn't take lead role for things he can't handle ! Acting is just above him !
I said it for Heirs , he needs a side role with great actors who would assist him , and from whom he'll learn..

But if he takes it , i'll be watching and i'll support him , i'm a fan :3 i'll be crossing fingers that he'll manage and do a decent job !

I'm loving the fact that this role is an adult one and a major step away from the typical eye candy dramas that are primed and ready for the new Hallyu wave. TBH though, Yonghwa should really pass on taking a lead role if his skills haven't improved. It just makes more sense for him to get more experience working as a part of an ensemble than taking the risk of carrying a drama as lead. If FNC is pushing him toward lead roles just because of the popularity of his last two dramas overseas and OSTs, I think it's a big mistake (really don't want a repeat of 'Love Rain' and TTBY). Yonghwa got the role in 'You're Beautiful' with no acting experience and went straight to a lead role from there. FNC should have built up Yonghwa's skills to establish himself as an actor with a Korean audience first. I think FNC has been taking the right path building the skills of Minhyuk, Jonghyun, and Jungshin by having them take smaller roles with solid senior actors they can learn from. I wish they'd do the same with Yonghwa. Was really hoping he get a fun part on one of those 50+ ep KBS weekend dramas. A lead role will do more for KBS (with overseas sales) and FNC (OSTs) than it honestly would for Yonghwa the would be actor. Truly hoping (if he does take this role), that Yonghwa has built up his acting skills and astonishes everyone with his improvement.

His bandmates are lucky to be casted in major hits alongside veteran actors with not so much pressure on their sleeves but sadly I don't see any of the three to have potential as lead actors. Truth is it's not enough that you have acting skills but you have to have that star power.

acting skill not enough star power is more important, sad but true. But my drama list is just fill with drama with interesting story with strong cast (in acting ) so i will give up this drama

I'm kinda wary of Yong Hwa trying to take another lead role. I love CN Blue to pieces, but they themselves admitted that he was the weakest actor. Unless he's been taking acting classes and has vastly improved, my expectations will be low.

I'll still tune in to see how this drama is. I can usually ignore bad acting usually unless it's over-acting; then it starts getting on my nerves. I think the premise would be interesting if executed properly. I'll leave my judgment until after the first few episodes. :)

I think he's still a lot better than the one member in A Gentleman's Dignity. That guy is just so awkward.

Eh. I like him in everything he does except when he's acting. I believe there are worse idol actors out there, but this is the lead role we are talking about. Remember his drama with Park Shin Hye? That drama has no substantial story but his acting didn't help it in any way at all.

Not related to this drama but....
Wow, I didn't know that he was considered to join 'heir' but I'm glad he/his management dropped 'heir' because with Kim Woo Bin, daddy gumiho Choi Jun Hyuk & Kang Haneul, his shortcomings would only become too obvious (imho of course!).
