Im Joo-eun cast as teacher in Heirs
by javabeans
Just when I thought the cast was finally (but also way in advance) set for Heirs with the last announcements, we get MORE. Specifically, one more with the addition of Im Joo-eun (Arang and the Magistrate, What’s Up, Hon). Will this drama never stop casting? Will it just be an endless revolving door of Who’s Who in It Girl/Guy Land, the K-Drama Version?
I am happy to hear of a charismatic and commanding actress to balance out the bunch, because thus far the guys have far outnumbered the ladies. Boo hoo, I’m sure we’re all thinking, poor Park Shin-hye and Krystal, surrounded by all the beautiful mens. How dire.
Im Joo-eun will play a teacher at Empire High School (lol at that name), the school for the uber-rich and future famous kids of this privileged world. She is both chic and heodang, looking cool and collected on the outside while being slightly awkward in real life. The character earns the favor of the Empire Group chairman for her sharp intelligence, although she actually “knows how to do nothing other than study.” So more nerd, less perfect genius?
Because it must be mentioned: Yeah, there’s some weird math going on with the ages, but you know what, I’m just gonna ignore the whole thing. Im Joo-eun is technically old enough to be a teacher at 25, but let’s not try to work out how she’s actually a year younger than series lead Lee Min-ho in real life. I’ll just consider this Hollywood-style casting, where they cast 28-year-olds to play 16-year-olds and it’s part of the fantasy. If I can go with part of the fantasy, I can go with all of it, right?
(Wait, wait. I’m having a thought… Does this mean Choi Jin-hyuk—who plays the 31-year-old Empire Group president—can have an age-appropriate love interest? THIS SOLVES EVERYTHING.)
Im Joo-eun made a splash in her debut drama role with 2009’s Hon, where she played a possessed high school student. She earned tons of buzz for that, but has sort of not capitalized on that initial response with her follow-ups. I hope she gets the chance to shine again here.
Heirs airs in October on SBS.

Heirs is becoming quite the star-studded production, but I hope that there'll be enough development for each character rather than some of them falling to the wayside. I especially like Im Joo-eun, so, if it's even possible, I'm anticipating Heirs even more.

This was my immediate reaction to this news. I'm already shipping this pair. Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye better bring their A games to this one or they could be outclassed by this couple.

Same here, especially since I like PSH as an actress but not as a romantic lead, if that makes sense - she has no sexual chemistry whatsoever. I don't watch LMH to see him friend-zoned, LOL so I am hopeful that this couple can provide some sparks.

skelly - she had her moments with Jang Geun-seok and Yoon Shi-yoon, if anything it's LMH who sometimes brings up a dud in the chemistry department (Boys Over Flowers, Faith etc. - the only drama of his I've seen where he had chemistry with his female lead was City Hunter. Even Personal Taste was kind of meh in that department despite Sohn Ye-jin and the Game Over kiss)

I would LOVE to see a pairing between her and Choi Jin Hyuk. Maybe it's predictable, but I loved her in Arang (even though she was evil, she has such a striking kind of beauty) and he's our favorite Daddy-Ho.
And le sigh for the Game Over kiss... I agree on all your points, I still don't know how the Game Over kiss got so game over.

Agree. The most onscreen chemistry he had was with park min young in city hunter, and it shows, considering they developed feelings off-screen and started dating.
I would really like to see him with a costar where there's sexual tension thick enough to cut with a knife, and i doubt park shin hye would be one to do that, even if i love the girl to bits.

I know she had multiple lovelines in AGD but that drama was mediocre as hell. This is going to be a hot mess. Just because Kim Eun Sook's dramas get high ratings, it does not mean she's a good writer.

No.
I'd say KES and Hong Sis are equal when it comes to writing romcom. The former is good at creating organic conflict (sans Secret Garden) without resorting to cliche makjang while the latter is good at the funny and the wacky premise but tends to have second-half letdown in most of their dramas.
I'd peg IHYV and Dream High 1 writer for a promisingly good romcom writer, though.

The main issue i have with KES is not so much her writing but the characters she creates that could be a bit of a frustration to watch.
The world she creates is beautiful and crack-like and the characters later become iconic but i wouldn't say she isn't a good writer.
Neither would i say she's a fantastic writer.
She's better than most out there being a veteran with years of experience in the drama world, but i am usually wary of her dramas because certainly there are eye-rolling moments.
i laughed at your "wtf this cast is bloated as hell". Indeed, it is. I wouldn't be surprised if not everyone on the cast has fully fleshed out characters simply due to the large number of them. But i wouldn't be surprised if this was a ratings hit considering there's a cast member for all types of fans out there.

For me, KES hasn't written a really good one since City Hall. I thought both AGD and Secret Garden relied too much on gimmicks, did not really delve into their characters. That being said, it's hard for me not to stick around for her characters - you either love them or hate them (and usually, there is a lot more to hate on), but they are often very memorable.

I don't get why people hate KES's writing. She writes good rom-coms. I thought international fans are into kdramas because it have romantic setups with lot of heart and a bits of comedy.
For me, she writes exactly the type of dramas that i want from kdramaland or factors that sunk me into kdramas.
I mean if you want to watch dramas with tight plotlines and epic setups, you should try American series(like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad,etc) which are in english, therefore you don't have to wait for subs too.

Doormats girls are a problem but that problem is rooted in the SK society, nothing specific to that writer. She's even better than the average in that area: Stuntwoman with a dominant side in the bedroom, female politician, writer who defends her opinions, competent music manager, diva actress who refuses to sleep with sponsors to land a role, teacher who accepts to marry a man only when she decides to... Just a sample of her female characters.

Amen brother (or sister)! Why's everyone so cynical towards KES? I think she doesn't write anything deep or poignant or groundbreaking but she's pretty decent at creating a fun, witty romcom that doesn't rely on cheap makjang trope. And if you guys complain about doormat female lead, fan fave like Hong Sisters are as guilty as they come, too: Gil Daran, Go Minam, their variety of bloodsucking second female leads.
In fact, KES is more decent in this area despite some obvious mishaps (SG's Gil Ra-im, AGD's Meahri). Think City Hall's councilwoman character, the CF director in SG who at the outset seem like your garden variety bitchy second lead but developed a different path in the course of the drama, then the other 3 female characters in AGD are FAR from doormat (a teacher who defended her student to great extent, female golfer whose goal in life is NOT to just become someone's wife, and the awesome Misook noona who just rocks by being in the room - still can't forget her word of advice to Woobin's character).
If you don't like her drama, fine, but enlighten me as to how she's so bad at writing characters when what I see is a scribe who actually tries hard at avoiding the industry cliche? Otherwise I'd wager y'all are just bandwagon-ing DB's opinion of her (which I respect, it's hers to make).

And just to mention another one. Remember Colin's mom (JDG's ex in AGD)? I actually was impressed that KES wrote her like a mature, fully-fleshed out person in that she's not trying to snatch away JDG back or hinder Colin from knowing his dad like other writers likely will do in that situation. And she only had like one and a half episodes of appearance. So, kudos!

I can only speak for myself, not anyone else in terms of feelings about this writer. The only drama I've seen from her is A Gentleman's Dignity so I can't talk about her writing in general (but I was shocked to find out that she's apparently quite acclaimed in Korea) but I will say that based on that show alone, I'm really wary of her. I couldn't stand the male lead in that drama (so much so that I eventually stopped watching the show because he made me so angry), I wasn't fond of the female lead, I really disliked the second female lead (Kim Sooro's character's younger sister) and I hated seeing the main couple interact so much that I wanted them to never be in the same room again.
I will say that I enjoyed seeing the interaction between the four guys which was the reason I was so excited for the show in the first place but that wasn't enough to outweigh my dislike for so many central characters. A lot of people here seem willing and able to keep watching a drama even if they only like some of the characters but personally speaking if I really don't like the leads or their dynamic, that's hard to ignore for 10+ episodes. I don't want to root for characters I dislike, especially if their relationship seems unhealthy. And I almost exclusively watch k-dramas which are rom-coms and while I haven't always been fond of leads, I've never been so against a couple's romance as I was for the main one in AGD.
I've seen it said by the recappers here as well as other commenters that her characters can be polarizing and I certainly saw that for myself after watching AGD. I wouldn't say that she's a bad writer because there were things about AGD that I liked but going off of that show alone, I don't have high hopes for this one, especially given the subject matter. It's so easy to make rich characters unlikeable and since the writer seems adept at creating characters who are absolutely insufferable (I seriously could not stand the male lead in AGD. Like I've never hated a character in a show this much), I worry that she'll do the same thing with the characters here. Characters don't always have to be likeable but in a rom-com, I want them to have some kind of redeeming qualities.
Anyway, long story short, AGD was absolutely ruined for me by the horrendous male lead and the off-putting interactions of the main couple and if that's indicative of how this writer creates characters, I don't have much hope for these new ones. But that's just my opinion based off of only one show and if you like her writing, that's fine too.

Not liking her style or the psychology of her characters is fine with me: But saying that she's a bad writer as in doesn't know how to build characters or a storyline: Not fine with me. A bad writer can't have such a fanbase and 7 ratings hit in a row. At one point you have to ask yourself: Why is she so popular? It doesn't come from nowhere.

? You seem like you can't take opinion that differs from yours.
I don't think she is bad writer, but also not great. Just decent and yes, she sometimes forget to build her characters. Specially her leading men that always have a child mind on a man body... her storyline can also drag a lot and not good. I'm still bitter about the loose ends she left on GD. She created so much drama and in the end it was like it never happened and everything was fine. She always loses touch on the last half of the drama, imo.

Just in case you're a bit curious, I suggest you watch her drama untitled "On Air": In this show the 2 male leads are certainly not children in men's body. You'll see what kind of drama writer she is since one of the heroines is a writer and a lot of stuff is taken from her personal experience (she even makes fun of her own flaws in it). You think that her storyline drags sometime? Which drama doesn't have 1 or 2 slow episodes? After having watched more than 300 dramas, I still didn't find the Perfect Drama. As for the storyline, her style is "slice of life" and not "character growth", which is neither good or bad: It's a narrative choice.
About the lose ends in AGD, I beg to disagree: We had closure for the 4 couples. Maybe not the ending you wanted (I didn't like everything either) but it was clean. Closure and happy ending are guaranteed in her rom-coms, her melos work differently...

Character rotation would be a good way to go. It's definitely how shows like the UK's Skins are successful since everyone gets some time to shine and we are not overwhelmed every episode.

So one more reason to watch, as I love Im Joo Eun.
Also it's like dramaland has been reading my mind with their castings lately choosing some of my absolute favorite actors and actresses. Gong Hyo Jin, So Ji Sub, Moon Chae Won, Moon Geun Young, Park Shin Hye, Im Joo Eun, and Ha Ji Won just to name, um almost all of them. Just need to hear news that Cha Seung Won is cast in a drama and I'll think I've died and gone to heaven.

Love her!!! I was just thinking when is she coming back to the small screen.
And if she is hot gumiho daddy's (I will call him that forever)love interest then I'm even more happier.
Yes for age appropriate romances for once!
Otherwise I might not watch this but Im Joo Eun cast and hot gumiho daddy then I just might give this a go.

*sigh* *succumb to their allure*

I love Im Joo Eun! She's so good but so very underrated. I'm so glad she decided to join this drama to boost her popularity by even just a bit. I really wanted to see her onscreen again. It's been a year since her cameo for Arang. I didn't expect her love line to be with Choi Jin Hyuk though. I think she would look better with Kang Ha Neul :P Strangely, even if I like most of the cast I wasn't excited to watch this drama at all. But with the addition of Joo Eun, I just might check this out.
Im Joo Eun sort of looks like Park Shin Hye. I wonder if they'll be any running jokes about it in the drama. Can't wait!

I loved her in What's Up, and it just hits me now that she was also in Arang (yeah, duh). I'm torn, the secondary and tertiary cast pulls me in, but the premise turns me off. And now, I'm just waiting for what other hilarious names this drama is going to churn out. Still laughing at Empire High School and of course The One Trying to Wear the Crown, Withstand the Weight – The Heirs

I'm worried about the whole high school setting and this batch of actors, although that doesn't mean I won't tune in to check it out when it airs anyhoot! Fingers crossed...

Love this actress in previous roles especially in Wild Romance. Here's hoping her character in this drama is as equally as awesome. I will be watching at least in the beginning because it's got such a loaded cast and a good writer, but just as many people have said, the casting of LMH and PSH as high school students has made me leery. My interest level just moved up on this drama.

She's one of the more versatile actresses of her generation, but the size of this cast is worrying me a bit now - we don't want anyone downsized into a cameo!

Maybe Lee Minho's character falls in love with her but is silent up until the last episode about it where he pours everything, and then the two begin dating in real-life. Maybe.

Gosh, it's getting harder to contain my excitement with all this casting news for this show! What an inspired choice...loved her in everything I've seen her in so far (What's Up, Wild Romance, Arang...) I can totally get behind a romance with Choi Jin-hyuk's character and can already imagine her doing a stellar job in conveying the nuances of the nerdy/awkward teacher. I hate how time flies because it means I'm getting older but at the same time, this drama can't come soon enough. grr

I hope the fact that they're getting an awesome cast means it's going to be an awesome story. You cannot just waste all of these people!!!
Need to stop raising my expectations. If I go into this with low expectations, it'll be AWESOME.
