Dramabeans Podcast #17, Part 1
by javabeans
You guys sure asked a ton of questions when we opened up our podcast request line, and we did our darnedest to get through as many as we could. (If by darnedest we mean got drunk and rambled, which, obviously, we do.) It’s a two-parter this time around, so stay tuned for the wrap-up in a few days!
(Apologies for the music in one or two places where I didn’t lower the volume enough. It’s not too terrible but in retrospect, it should have been lowered more. I’ll be paying closer attention to the levels in the next one.)
Podcast #17, Part 1
Running time: 61:05
The questions we address:
- Why are you so mysterious?
- Do the people in your real life know about your online identities? Has fame changed the way they treat you?
- Why did you start making recaps, of all things? Why recaps and not just commentary?
- What colleges did you graduate from? (8:10)
- What are common things javabeans and girlfriday disagree about when it comes to their tastes in dramas?
- What are your favorite/ideal actor types? Character types? (10:38)
- How accurate are the drama depictions of Korean culture? (20:20)
- What are your favorite actors in terms of acting ability? (23:37)
- And actresses? (28:13)
- How do you maintain your enthusiasm for the subject matter? (31:44)
- How hot is Lee Sang-woo? (34:08)
- What was the first time you guys met face to face?
- Will you have a meetup in LA?
- Will you have a meetup outside the U.S., say the Philippines?
- On a tropical island: Pick your favorite drama hunk, two dramas, favorite food, and an object. (36:00)
- What exactly is the drama trifecta of having good acting, directing, and writing? (40:20)
- Whatever happened to Samsooki and would you consider having a male writer on staff?
- What dramas have foreigners as significant characters? (48:54)
- How much time does it take you to do these recaps? What’s your schedule like?
- Do you think Korea’s really experiencing a golden age, or is this just a product of the workaholic mentality?
- What do you think of the crackdown on all the streaming and downloading websites? (52:08)
- Where do you see the future of this blog going? (56:36)
- Why is there a lack of rom-coms these days in dramaland? Why don’t we have hugely popular crack dramas like You’re Beautiful, Boys Before Flowers, etc?
- How many hits does Dramabeans get?

“Oh My Goddess” by Sung Shi-kyung
“Cappuccino, Mocha & Cafe Latte” from the My Sweet Seoul OST

This was fab! I wonder if it's sad that I totally knew who your favorites were. Although, its not like you try hard to keep it a secret.
I appreciate that you keep real life separate from web life. That seems like a healthy thing to do since I'm not sure the two could easily co-exist.
Thanks for taking this time to share just a little more insight into dramas, your reasons for writing and watching, and of course a little Korean culture.
And I must agree that Lee Sang Woo deserves a question and answer all his own. Something about that guy just makes me sigh. Yes, he's handsome. But he also seems "normal". Plus he plays like the nicest, most understanding characters ever. LOVE!

Hahaha, the Lee Sang woo question cracked me up. Especially because the question before it was so serious- "How do you maintain your enthusiasm for the subject matter?" But I totally agree. Lee Sang woo is hot in that "I-could-potentially-meet-a-real-guy-who-looked-like-you" way. He's also really tall! Being a tall korean girl myself, I totally appreciate how tall he looks :) I think he's in a weekend kdrama these days if people are interested...

I love the song "Kissing Me" and the MV they made. Thank you for using it. I actually love the OST of that movie. I also thought Daniel Henney and his female co-star (the lead) had a really good chemistry, especially BTS. There is one BTS where I think the filming comes to an end, and she get teary eyed and emotional, and he is very tender and affectionate with her (or maybe it was just the scene they were shooting that got her like that, I am not sure). I kinda wished that scene was in the movie, because it was a beautiful scene between the two of them.

I don't know about others, but I, for one, would find dramabeans quite fascinating to hear from ya'll in person.

Oh yeah, I completely agree with your analysis concerning K-Drama streaming/downloading.
It's already a bummer that it's hard finding places to make drama viewing accessible, so they think the solution is to cut off the access? The logic<<<
Like you two pointed out- they they want the popularity but they not only not make it easier, but make it harder on people.
Why can't they just make it available for us people to buy it? Why make it so difficult? I just want to watch to feed my drama addiction so I'd more than gladly pay for it if it'd be accessible on I-tunes.

jajaja I never thought they would, because of the answer I heard before "you guys think we're much more interesting than we are".... (I was paraphrasing there)
I guess it's part of human nature to be curious about the people who bring you info on kdrama, and some tidbits of kculture, which in my case is one of the things I love, I love it so much I want to teach in SK when I finish my studies... But as I said before human nature...

hmm. I think maybe one day we'll know what their day jobs are, but personally I think a first name would be a good place to start, ha. I think i remember JB's from the much older posts when someone thanked her using her first name. GF and the recap minions I don't know but i'm rather curious. I think these web names are like personas, but I also think you all are the same way you are in real life since the two overlap but never quite blend. It's sort of like keeping your business lives separate from your personal lives, although i wouldn't consider DB as business but more hobby.
The reason why you guys still seem so mysterious is because of the personal questions that you only lightly touched upon, and we're left with more questions.
"drunk, soju, getaway car, underemployed, overeducated" just words like that make us more curious than we were before. ;)
I think if you actually told us the actual amount of hours it takes to recap, people would be a WHOLE lot more appreciative. Because i think sometimes people take for granted or rather forget that you drama goddesses are human beings too. You need sleep, rest, etc. And just because you've done recaps for so long doesn't mean it's not time consuming still.

I also love hearing the pronunciation of names and words. When I first began watching kdramas, I just followed along with the subs and never learned the characters names, let alone the real names of the actors. Now I try to learn the characters' names and the actors' names and say them in my head without knowing the correct pronunciation. So your conversations really help with that!
Loved the distinction you made between recap and commentary. For example. when I have a conversation, it is typically a mix of both. But to have an objective recap and separate commentary in context - wow, you really do work hard for us. It's like getting double for the money. A big thanks for that.
In fact, we beanies benefit from the collective high quality of what you want for yourselves that is generously pass on to us.
On Korea wanting its media cake and eating it too - I have often thought that if kdramas and kpop (which you acknowledged is ahead of the game) and other things Korean want to reach a bigger global market, then they have to make access easier, not more difficult. On top of easier access from the networks there is the added step of subbing without which I wouldn't be a kdramaaddict. At all.
Loved the podcast - thank you thank you thank you!

I got a question: What´s the name of the actor born in 1987 that you compare to Lee Jeong Suk? I should know all of the 87 actors, but hearing you say it, it doesn´t ring a bell! Makes me wonder how many Korean names I actually pronounce in a wrong way in my head........

Hahahaha, you and me both sister.
I was literally trying to type out the words as they sounded in my head into google trying to match the names and who they were talking about to actual faces.
It's funny. I'm glad i'm not the only one having issues with korean names. It's like you think you know them, you have a hard time remembering and saying it in real life (simply because there's not much conversation where a korean celebrity's name pops up, from someone who has friends that don't watch k-dramas) and then hearing GF and JB say their names so effortlessly and fast is a bit hard to keep up with.

I do the same too after hearing JB and GF. Now when I see Lee written, in my head in read "ee". The same for Jung Il woo. One time in one of the High kicks season he said "My name is Jung Il-oo", and I was like ahhhhhh ok! so I guess the extra "W" is for us foreigners to be able to pronouce it better.

Jung II-woo is the alpha vs Lee Min-ho and Lee-Jong-suk is the alpha vs Kim Woo-bin. Woo-bin and Min-ho are the betas! And if you swap both friendships, alpha versus beta, they even look so alike haha.

I'd guess it's the '83er (of Que Sera Sera and, more recently, Cyrano Dating Agency fame). :)

I knew Kim OkBin's "sageuk"-speak sounds off in Sword and Flower! But since I am not a Korean speaker I thought it was just the show being fusion-y.
Regarding the acting-directing-writing trifecta, I am a bit confused. I have always thought that the director is in charge of framing the shot and correcting the movements of the actors/actresses while editors are the ones who are in charge of music placement, cut-to-cut/scene-to-scene transitions (at least this is how I understand the North American model of film production) but in your podcast, javabeans describes these roles as the same. Is this more of a difference in the Korean entertainment industry or am I missing something?

The editor does what the Director tells him to. So, the Director is the one that says "cut here" and "put the music there", etc

regarding the legal availability of kdramas: YES, PRECISELY. if there was a (good) way, i would be willing to pay to have my fix delivered to me.
mbc and one of the other stations has a whole slew of older dramas up on youtube through their official channels, which i found to be a pretty promising sign. unfortunately, for the mbc drama i wanted to re-watch, chunks of episodes were missing. there were about five or six videos per episode for this particular drama, and they never connected. i don't know if this was intentional or an error.
my mom gets korean cable, and all the shows from mbc, kbs, and sbs are recorded and stored for (only) a month. after that, they delete automatically. but despite the fact that we have good internet, it's just not the most reliable. it freezes all too frequently, and i just wish it updated faster (typically, monday's shows are updated by monday evening eastern time. i can't wait a whole day to watch i can hear your voice! haha).
so personally, i torrent everything. i recently discovered viki, which is a great backup. but i like having the files so i can watch at my own leisure, at my own pace. i can skim and fast forward and rewind much more easily on a computer than i can with a remote aimed at a television or with viki. streaming sites can be slow, and dependent on having (good) internet. which i do, but if i'm on the go somewhere, there's nothing like having the file right there to play.
i wonder if korea is aware of the extent of this sort of thirst for their kdrama products? koreans are speedy about a lot of things, but really slow about stuff like this.

I liked your points about snarking. I'm open-minded to dramas, but I pretty much know if I'll like them or not based on plot, genre, and the actors/actresses starring. You guys are waaaay more optimistic than me. And I like that. I know a... um... drama blogger... whose snark I... pretty much... cannot stand. Ha. So trust me when I say, I appreciate the manner in which you two approach projects.
I liked your comments about good acting, directing, and writing too. 2/3 is a definite plus.
And Park Boyoung... I love watching that girl on screen. I totally wish she would do more television and reteam with some of her former co-stars from movies and music videos. Song Joongki, Joowon, Ji Changwook, even Junhyung of 'Monstar' to name a few. Ha. They all had such good chemistry with her but every story ended sadly. Boo. And I'm totally down for a Park Boyoung/Lee Jongseok pairing. Ha. Was that ever confirmed? I just hope her next project is awesome.
Anyways, thanks for responding to these questions. Nice to know there are so many of us entertainment enthusiasts.
Also... I must be on this site way too much... when I'm reading an article and forget to check who posted it, I can tell right away through your styles of writing and humor whose post I'm reading. Ha. Yeah, I think I fall under that over-educated, under-employed category too. Ha.

I'm so glad that JB/GF had her rant on availing kdramas easily and legally. My friend and I don't even want to talk about the possibility that all of those sites offering kdramas will one day be out and typing that made me worry as hell. If only the immigration asked me when I visited Korea "Whats your purpose in visiting Korea?" I will answer with a proud voice, "KDRAMA!" haha
This is a timely podcast because I just had a discussion with my kdrama-addict officemate, that comparing how good kdrama vs our local (Filipino drama) is a bit unfounded because we don't understand a lot the language and culture. I told her we would not know how a line should have been delivered realistically especially in a sageuk.
I love this site because I am the type that would want to discuss with someone or a bunch of people what I've watch.
Hugs to you guys!

This podcast is another reminder of why I fucking love you guys and Dramabeans. I get the feeling that I should learn Korean professionally so I can appreciate the kdrama/k-entertainment world a little better (or have a better reason to snark). As cheesy as it sounds, I think you guys are pretty inspiring pioneers (drunk slurs included).

See, I was supposed to be transcribing an interview for work, but guess who stopped doing *that* to listen to this podcast? :p
I'm as curious as everyone else on where you studied or what your past day jobs were, though I'd also like to take a moment and shriek "Television Without Pity!! FTW!!! Woot!!!" If you've been hanging out there a while for US show recaps then I'll peg you both as being my age or slightly younger. :p
I had such a lightbulb moment when you mentioned it, because I've been reading your recaps since last year (when I first started being interested in K-dramas) and something about the quality of your recapping and the smart use of snarkiness rang familiar. (though yes, the snark levels of TVWP were something else)
This was a fun podcast to listen to, and I really enjoyed learning a bit more about you two. :)

And drunk as hell ! :DD
With all the real life shit, you sticking around dramabeans, and giving more than just fun to us (seriously, so much), I appreciate you girls!
My heartfelt thank you!! <3
One curious thing, since you say you both are bad life-planners, I just wanna ask is Dramabeans your escape, or just something you are used to?
I mean, I know you both love kdramas and want to talk about it, but maybe beyond that do you do this because you are used to doing it everyday?
And one more thing, PACK UP YOUR BAGS AND GO TO PARIS! I KNOW YOU BOTH WANT TO!
Give DB a holiday for a week! :)
You girls deserve a holiday!
I am sure we will be patiently waiting for you both to get back!

Javabeans, Sung Shi-Kyung! I'm with you here. He's one of very few celebrities with whom I'd really like to have a conversation (also marry). He's self-aware and subtle and really upright, and he clearly values his education.
He's totally not encouraged to speak the way he does, and I love that he's a big stubborn stick in the mud about it. I love that bokbulbok is a matter of integrity for him.
If anyone hasn't seen it, he kind of railroaded his episode of Knee-Drop Guru and it was awesome: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xqgovj_eng-gf-sung-shi-kyung-071031_people

This was totally genius. Thank you. You don't think you're "famous" but...you are absolutely heroes/goddesses of wit to us. My life without dramabeans would be super sad.
No drama episode is complete without a DB recap. DB is the internet equivalent of bacon- it makes bad things tolerable (see BIG) and awesome things even better (see IHYV).

OMG. Totally random.
I see in my inbox, WOO, another podcast... listening listening... OING, me? Totally embarrassing! I am alive, but this is so weird - like showing up to one's funeral as a ghost.
What can I say, I LOVE jb and gf and everybody and I wish that there were 36 hours in a day, and that I could devote that much more time to do things.
1. Yes, family and work are keeping me busy.
2. I miss DB and everybody at DB terribly.
3. These days, I don't watch much of anything k-drama related. I feel like I belong to a past age of k-dramas, and all the new stuff now is just over my head - I don't really get them. The new series feel foreign, feel formulaic, and lack the honesty and creativity that series like Coffee Prince exuded.
4. If I ever got $1B, I would quit my job, buy the rights to Robotech, re-make Robotech as a Korean sci-fi drama series and then convince JB and GF to executive co-produce. Rick Hunter would get Minmei and not Lisa Hayes. Why? Because Rick and Minmei were MFEO. I cannot even begin to tell you how much I want this dream to come true. Until then, I am just grinding away at being a dad, a husband and a lawyer.
5. Finally, I don't see myself as having had a "male" viewpoint with respect to k-dramas. I just had a viewpoint. And to be honest, I tend to be irritated by what I see to be the stylings of what males are supposed to be like in korean media. As I said recently to a close friend, the male role model in k-dramas appears to still be one of two archetypes - (a) the hyper stylized flower boy, and (b) the chauvinistic arrogance (binnie drinking cantata coffee).
Why not simply show humility, equality, soft-speaking, generosity, intelligence, humor, tolerance and a strong sense of duty (but without the makeup, the guy-liner, the slimming cardigans, the aloof emo-tastic attitude)? Why not be strong, without being antagonistic or attitutidistic? Why must every k-drama male character be so hard to relate to (other than, as my friend suggests, UTW)?
Anyhoo. I am so happy to have had a small part of DB's success and growth, and I am eternally grateful to JB and GF for allowing me to express myself and to have fun.
