Kim Young-kwang joins Good Doctor

Casting continues for Good Doctor, adding Kim Young-kwang (Birth Secret, Bachelor’s Vegetable Store) to the medical staff to join Moon Chae-won and Joo Sang-wook as skilled doctors, with Joo-won playing the autistic savant who becomes a pediatric surgeon, who’s treated as the outsider by the other good docs. Because you can never escape high school.

Good Doctor is the drama formerly known as Green Scalpel, which reportedly changed its title because… wait for it… it was too difficult. It’s not like I think dramaland has a high opinion of our intelligence based on so much of the recycled nonsense it pours out, but c’mon. (Green Scalpel borrowed words for both green and scalpel… but then again, Good Doctor is just the transliterated English anyway, not a Korean-language title.) Is dramaland going to just dumb all its titles down now, lest we be unable to grasp concepts beyond the literal like Good Doctor, Birth Secret, Basketball, I Hear Your Voice, Medical Top Team, Two Weeks, and Three Days? Only one entendre need apply!

Kim Young-kwang plays a fourth-year resident of pediatric surgery who’s warm and friendly and a trustworthy colleague to Moon Chae-won and Joo Sang-wook. He’s also the first to bond with Joo-won’s character as a friendly hyung, which awww. That’s cute. (And funny, since they’re dong-gap actors in real life. But I can imagine Joo-won being happy to make anybody his hyung.)

Good Doctor will be a Monday-Tuesday drama on KBS following Shark and premieres on August 5.

I am assuming that dong-gap means actors or people who are/were born the same year, right?
Based on that, does the month one was born in matters in Korea? I saw that Kim Young-kwang was born on January 1st, 1987 and JW on September 30th, 1987. Is my reasoning different if I assume that KYK would be the hyung anyway, or doesn't it work like that? (as in, the month one was born in does not matter, just the year, to determine one's position in the relationship as far hyung, unni and dongsaeng go).

I believe when you're younger it's a bigger deal as to what time of year you were born in. So KYK would be the "fast" 87, and JW would be the late 87. I think at that point it's up to them whether they want to be hyung-dongsaeng or just friends.

What can I say? The cast is top notch for me. Didn't watch Birth Secret nor Love Rain but he was good in BVS (for what he had to do) and excellent in Can we get married? He has that warm quality with just a bit of ice and danger under it. And of course, he is handsome...
Now let's wait for the script to match this.

He's worth watching in White Christmas too - his character is out-and-out a cowardly jerk, but I liked how he made me feel bad for such an unsympathetic character.

Love Rain was a waste of all its supporting cast, really. I liked it because JGS and Yoona had good chemistry and I fast-forwarded all scenes except theirs, but you are quite ok missing it.

And I think you just hit the nail on the head for why he is so appealing.

Lots of actors can play 'good' and 'bad', and I admire that ability, but he's one of the rare ones who seems like he could pull off being both those qualities in the same frame.

I had just a mild interest in this drama, it depends on the writing whether I will watch it. However this comment "He has that warm quality with just a bit of ice and danger under it" warmed me up a little more. This guy has not been on my radar somehow.

His offscreen antics don't really bother me, even if he is an idiot. The man can act, and frankly I'd rather watch him onscreen than a 'nice' idol/actor who otherwise has all the ability of a block of wood.

(would still give him a wide berth in real life, though - I am not a fangirl for jerks!)

0

dafq would someone want to come off as a butthole in an interview (in Korea for that matter) to create buzz? something like that could literally destroy someone's career in Korea. he's not just a jerk but also an idiot if that's what he was going for.

From his interviews, his words:

"I plan to continue advancing onto European stages, but my final hopes is to become an actor. Recently, I shot a music video with Shin Hye Sung and Lyn's for 'It's You'. I also played the role of a hitch hiker in the shopping mall '11th Street' CF. I broke up with my girlfriend last September. The reason? Why are you asking me that, it's embarrassing me. My ideal woman is someone who's smart and cute. Someone who dresses well according to each situation, but doesn't overdo it. What I think is ugly is when women with thick thighs and short legs wear skinny jeans. Or those that wear leggings and a miniskirt and sit with their legs spread open on the subway... I sincerely ask those people to stop."

''Article: Kim Young Kwang under controversy for his interview "I hate girls with thick legs..."

Vogue Girl: What kind of physical appearance do you dislike?

Kim Young Kwang: I hate anyone that looks pathetic. Anyone that looks like Sung Joon (model), I don't mind if they show up without their hair washed or something but when someone whose physical appearance I don't like shows up like that, I don't even want to look at them.

Vogue Girl: I'm not that into short, stubby hands.

Kim Young Kwang: I hate thick calves!

Vogue Girl: That's right, you said before that you look at a girl's legs the first time, right?

Kim Young Kwang: I look at everything (laugh).

Kim Young Kwang: I've said this in almost every interview but whether they be a male or female, I like them to be pretty. I know that it's not necessary to say things like this but I'll look at someone's physical appearance and say, "I don't like that person. I don't think they'll match me." Then my friends will be like, "Hyung, you're really mean, you know that?"

Yeah, and people telling me ''don't believe what media says, lol it was an interview and he said those things, he even said sorry for saying things like this.

Certainly, not the only celebrity I like who has a seemingly less-than-favorable personality type. I just choose to focus on their talents in cases like this.

I think he talked a bit much in this, though. Sometimes, it's better not to say certain things but at least we know he's honest, haha! Lol, Vogue Girl was definitely feeding this conversation, too, though. I have to laugh at this.

We all do our choices in life. I prefer honesty over tact and it goes both ways. If people prefer to believe canned interviews on 1st degree, good for them. I prefer to have a critical mind on what I hear and see, specially in Dramaland. As I said, no one but him can know what he really thinks. For me it's just one of those stupid interviews and he gave an answer a bit different than usual for the journalist, probably cause he was bored out of his mind. Either it's true and life will teach him how it works OR it's bullshit and there is no reason to preach morality. Seriously, looking at the comments you could think that he killed puppies.

If people look dramas depending on what the actors say on interviews about their private life, then it's sad. Btw, those stars surely do worst things than having high standards for partners, because they are merely humans. Fangirls judge the actors way of life, I judge the fangirls and commenters who don't agree with me can judge me. Circle of life.

I'm not saying that it's unfair for him to have a type of woman he finds most attractive; loads of people have a physical type that they prefer. I know I do. But it's possible to have that preference without being an ass to everyone who doesn't fit the mold.

I can see how alot of people would consider your comment to be insensitive and blunt(recognizing the large female demographics) except i was not put off by your comment and remain unaffected on an objective standpoint. There are so many comments bashing actors and actresses based on looks alone on all these blogs but once it comes on the other end, all of a sudden the world stops. I can see how one would argue that the degree to his comment is rather harsh, but i just see it as a boy being uber shallow, not beating around the bush whereas other people manage to say it in a better manner so it doesn't sound as bad or ass-like.
Im pretty sure in alot of guys think these horrible things, they just don't admit it. This is reality. Kim Young Kwang comes across as a douchebag (deservedly so) because he shamelessly admits it, but even then why should it matter if he successfully portrays his character well and gets the job done? They're actors and entertainers, and i expect nothing more from them. Don't know the dude, dude don't know me, we have no real connection. Reality vs. fantasy
In this day and age people are increasingly associating an actor/actresses's personality offscreen to their characters on screen. ie. maknae joo won + gaksital = does not compute! Which is why i try to avoid watching variety esp. which actors/actresses i've come to love onscreen.

100% agree. Douchebagry is legal. He can do what the heck he wants. And people are allowed to form opinions on his character based on what he says. It is also likely that some of these people are being hypocritical based on their own prefernces as well but thats another story.
He is clearly a talented actor but if he is that vocal about who he truly is, it's difficult for people to separate his reality from the characters he portrays. I think if mystisith had expressed the point in this manner, more people would have seen where he/she was coming from and possibly agreed with the point. Which i think is proof that separating packaging from what lies beneath is difficult.

I didn't know this guy's got such a controversial image. I have only seen him in White Christmas which I thought he did great as a cowardly bully.

Anyway, he is a side character, I don't think he is going to have much screen time. Strange that people are staying away from this drama because they dislike him but well, to each her own. He's definitely not going to impact my enjoyment, the most important thing is still the story and how they tell it.

I agree that we should take most interviews with a pinch of salt. This guy could be just speaking his mind and being more honest than most but I think there is such thing as having some common sense not to be offensive. Some things are best kept private and not shout to the whole world. No one appreciates this kind of honesty. Or of course he could just be trying to make a buzz. And does that make him better than those who say only good things?

In any case, I don't need to be a fangirl to watch him. He is just another actor in a dramaland who is tall, looks decent and can act.

Dismissing projects because of an actor or actress's personality you don't like off-screen has always been rather puzzling to me. Especially one that is not either of the main leads.
It sucks for an actor or actress when you're watching them act out their character and all you see is their variety persona or your impression from interviews.
We know nothing about the guy except for the douchey comment he made in an interview. Except, someone seemingly as shallow as him should be pitied, because words like that don't cut as deep compared to other things people can say. But that's just me. Him saying stuff like "ugly people", "big thighs/calves" is somewhat childish but i'd say a direct hit to my personality or character traits would hurt my ego way more.

Dismissing projects because of an actor or actress’s personality you don’t like off-screen has always been rather puzzling to me.

Same here. Admittedly, I do tend to avoid the work of particularly heinous people (you will not catch me watching a Roman Polanski film, and I'm not sure I'll watch anything with Park Shi-hoo in it ever again, after the recent awfulness) but boycotting someone's work because they said something trivial but somewhat hurtful.....it just seems childish to me.

If they can get the job done onscreen, that should be what matters - variety aegyo is not a substitute for acting talent.

Word about Park Shi Hoo. Even though the details of that case were never clear, I don't think I could watch him in anything again without thinking "did he? did he not?" It'll be weird now, for sure. On the other hand, it's a problem I don't think anyone has to worry about right now. I mean, I don't see him getting much work for a while...

0

Required fields are marked *

for me it's not boycotting, it's just its making it hard to like his character. like a bitter taste watching his character. i liked him in can we get married, and more charming by the day. He also played a minor role in "Take care of a lady".

I think i will still rewacht Can we get married, but the bitter taste will never fade. And thats kinda disappointing.

Same with deceased actors...Like Park Yong Ha. I really loved On Air and now its hard to watch because I know he is dead :( again this "bitter taste"

With Park Shi Hoo I don't have that much of a problem. He was declared innocent. And I believe in law. :/ Maybe hypocritical but I think we have to believe in law.

I have a problem watching Ryu Shi Won after I read he killed someone in a car accident. But his scandal seems forgotten....

......so someone who, by his own admission, slept with a drunk, barely-legal young woman on the first night they met and then had his lawyers drag her character through the mud is easier to 'like' when you watch them playing a character than someone who merely stated his aesthetic preferences in women's figures?

Yeah, I'd say that is hypocritical, especially considering just what the accusation was.

what i say is that noone knows the whole story and you don't know what happened. so what: call someone a criminal eventhough he was declared innocent? everybody is innocent until it's proven he is a criminal. you judge by what the media tell you. i judge by what a court has decided...because these are the only facts i can rely on.
you don't rely on facts, you rely on what media tells you.

so you can't prove anything but call him a criminal. remeber that innocent people go to jail and their live is ruined, or worse: they get death sentence. Always think about how you judge people: by facts or by belief.
