I Hear Your Voice: Episode 6

So much goodness packed into this hour. This show just does things to me. I watch with my heart in my throat, and I love everything from the witty banter and the wordplay, to the swoony romance and silly hijinks, to the frightening darkness that comes out of nowhere and keeps me on the edge of my seat.

Ratings are still on the climb: Episode 6 came in at 17.8% (Mandate of Heaven recorded 8.9%, and Queen’s Classroom brought in 7.9%).

EPISODE 6: “Me, abandoned all alone at the edge of the world”

Su-ha drops the bomb in the middle of the street: Hye-sung was wrong about the twin double homicide case—they were in on it together. She pleads with him to say that he’s lying, but she knows without him having to say it. He does it anyway. He’s not lying.

She has a momentary freak-out and covers her ears like a child. He pulls her hands away to force her to listen, and says that Do-yeon was right. But the denial is strong with this one, and instead she flips on her bitch switch: “So?”

She asks if she’s supposed to go back to the judge and say oopsie, and that Do-yeon was right and she was wrong? “I can’t! I won’t!”

He can’t believe her answer, and refuses to let go of her hands. She struggles to break free which is a futile waste of energy if I’ve ever seen one, and he finally counters, “Then I guess you have to leave the courtroom. That’s what you said ten minutes ago.”

Only now does she recall her gloating words to Do-yeon that the worst kind of person in the courtroom is the one who doesn’t admit her mistakes. She tries to hedge but he asks if she’s not that person right now.

And then he reads her thoughts as she looks up at him: I thought this Gum-wad was my lifesaving rope, but he’s a rotten rope that’ll tie my ankles down. Gasp. What a horrible thing to think. Augh, why do you break his heart so?

She storms into the office pitching a fit that it is NOT the same thing at all. AT ALL! And then looks out her window to see Gum-wad just sitting there in the street numbly. She screams again and shuts her eyes, not wanting the reminder.

He sits like that in the same place all day until it’s dark, and then as he walks toward the door to her office, the scenery changes around him and fades to a different building. As he crosses the threshold, he becomes Little Su-ha. Nice.

The police bring him back to his uncle after he was left at the amusement park, and Uncle takes him back with a sigh. We see that life really was tough for him, all alone with four kids to feed, not that it justifies trying to ditch one in a park.

But the thing Su-ha hears him thinking is: “This kid is going to grab our ankles.” It’s a turn of phrase that means he’s a ball-and-chain, and of course the same one that Hye-sung used today.

Little Su-ha cries as he tells Uncle that he got hurt today, but gets no response. We fade back to Big Su-ha, with that same finger bandaged, and left all alone all over again.

Hye-sung finally comes back out. “Take it back. What you said earlier about me being the same as Do-yeon. Take it back!” Hee. He refuses, so she rants, “I’m going to admit I was wrong, okay!”

He laughs, and she takes issue with his flippant attitude, explaining how difficult it is to acknowledge your mistakes in front of your enemy and what a big person this makes her. Haha.

“So take it back.” I love that she needs to hear him say that she’s not like Do-yeon. He complies (while correcting her grammar to point out the difference between “wrong” and “different,” which is often used interchangeably in Korean) and tells her that she’s very different from that prosecutor.

It sort of makes her flustered, which is cute, and then she changes the subject to say that they have a lot of grocery shopping to do.

He gripes about having to go shopping with her, but totally loves it. She fills the cart with instant food, and he throws it out for fresh veggies, and so on in a loop.

She catches him staring at the goldfish in the pet section, which perhaps reminds him of his uncle’s house (there was a small fishbowl in the scene just earlier), or even the last thing he was supposed to do with Dad before he died.

The next day Hye-sung goes to see Twin 2, who’s as soft-spoken and polite as ever. She asks carefully if even one percent of anything he’s told her is a lie, and asks if there’s a chance he was in on the stabbing with his brother.

He denies it, but asks if his brother said anything, which she catches. “Why, if he did, would that change your story?” Suddenly the air in the room gets thick with tension, and he looks down at her hand, betraying a nervously tight grip on her pencil. He smiles. It’s super creepy.

She glances sidelong at the guard on the other side of the window, and he clocks that too. He leans in close across the table and switches to banmal as he tells her this is a secret between them, because of lawyer-client privilege.

He says it isn’t a threat, but a hope that she’s smart and will do as he says. “I’ve studied the law and what I’ve found is, it isn’t how you observe the law, but how you use it.” Damn.

She goes for a spin in the revolving door, wondering what to do to put that guy away. Kwan-woo comes by and she grabs him to try and get him to listen to her. She all but tackles him while screaming that the twins were in on the murder together, but he just runs around covering his ears, insisting that they can’t share information.

He breaks free, refusing to cooperate, but wonders to himself what he’ll do if she’s right. He shakes the thought out of his head, telling himself that his client Twin 1 comes first.

And then he notices when people walk by pointing and laughing that Hye-sung left a perfect face-shaped foundation imprint on his jacket from the tussle. HA. And then he swoons at it, “Hey, it’s jjang-byun!” Pffft.

At home, Hye-sung tells Su-ha about Kwan-woo’s reaction, calling it ridiculously childish and stubborn, while he tries not to bust a gut at the irony. (I love that he’s always opening bottles and cans for her while they talk, very naturally.)

She wonders what to do, and he says he did read Do-yeon’s mind as she was talking to her outside the courtroom. We see that in a momentary flash, Do-yeon wondered to herself, “Should I ask her for help?”

Do-yeon has an idea for how to put both twins away with Hye-sung’s help, but Su-ha couldn’t get a read on what it was. Hye-sung debates whether or not to call her and offer her help, and Su-ha decides to choose for her, and stealths her phone while she’s busy weighing the pros and cons.

He starts texting Do-yeon, and she freaks out and starts climbing him like a tree to get at her phone. It’s less piggyback, more bull-riding, with lots of hair grabbing and violence, and it’s hysterical.

He manages to send the text (suggesting that they meet to make it a win-win), and she paces the room, horrified that it makes her look un-cool. You would be worried about that. But Do-yeon replies right away with plans to meet at scene of the crime the next morning.

She wanted to show Hye-sung the widow with three small children, left behind in the store owner’s murder. Hye-sung doesn’t outright admit that she was wrong, but she does ask what Do-yeon’s plan is to get both twins.

Kwan-woo happens upon them as he’s headed to the crime scene, and ducks for cover as he watches them from afar. He tells Lawyer Shin and Pretty the Paralegal about it, and they wonder if Hye-sung is teaming up with the prosecution to take him down.

Lawyer Shin says that’s too makjang even for her, while Pretty thinks she’s plenty capable of it. Kwan-woo’s conclusion? “I was really moved! It was seven-thirty in the morning!” He totally glosses over the rest, impressed at Hye-sung’s dedication to the case.

Hye-sung goes to see Twin 2 and offers him two folders with his two options: plead guilty and go free, and plead innocent and go down for murder. He doesn’t see how that makes any sense, but she explains that if she can rule out all the evidence the prosecution puts out, he could walk away scot-free… if he confesses to the crime. What, now?

She explains that he can’t incriminate himself with his confession if there’s no other evidence, which means that if he were to take this route and confess to the crime, he’d be immune, while Twin 1 took the fall.

He asks why he should take the deal if there isn’t enough evidence to convict, but she says the prosecution hasn’t shown all its cards, and there’s a second security tape that they haven’t revealed yet.

She says that the prosecution may have been setting this up from the start, and suggests that he walk out the open door while there’s still a chance, otherwise he’ll be the one trapped inside. Basically, sell your brother out before he sells you out.

On their way home that night, Su-ha asks why there’s a law that keeps a person from incriminating himself even if he confesses, and Hye-sung explains that it’s to keep cops and prosecutors from torturing confessions out of people unjustly. He asks if one of the twins will go free then, and she says no—they have a plan.

Su-ha stops suddenly when he hears a pickpocket plan to rob an ajumma he followed out of the bank. He raises a knife to her purse…

Su-ha steps out in front of Hye-sung to make sure she’s safe, and then loudly declares that the man’s fly is open to everyone within earshot. It gets everyone to look at him, and the guy has to give up and walk away.

Once he tells her what’s going on, Hye-sung sighs that they shouldn’t have let him go because he’ll just rob someone else, and Su-ha says they stopped him, so it’s enough.

Mom calls to ask when Hye-sung’s payday is, which he catches. At the store, Mom tells Joon-gook to circle the date on the calendar (and as some eagle-eyed commenters have noted, it’s definitely 2012 in this dramaverse).

Joon-gook stands there staring at all the pictures on the wall of Mom and Hye-sung, and says ever so creepily that they look happy. Mom asks where his family is, and his expression empties out like he’s suddenly dead inside: “They all died. A long time ago.”

Court day rolls around and Twin 2 looks over at his hyung nervously, clearly shaken by Hye-sung’s offer. In court, Do-yeon sticks to her double-guilty stance, while the defense pleads innocent and knocks down her list of evidence one by one.

I love the beat where Hye-sung asks the one elderly eye-witness whose picture she’s holding up—it’s Jung Hyung-don, and he says, “My mother?” Hee.

Pretty the Paralegal thinks Hye-sung and Kwan-woo are wiping the floor with the prosecution, but Lawyer Shin thinks she’s being a little too easily defeated, like she’s setting herself up to be knocked down. He’s keen enough to know where this is headed, and says they’re going for the prisoner’s dilemma—basically pitting the twins against each other.

Sure enough, when it comes time, Twin 2 caves under pressure and confesses that they murdered the man together. Twin 1 looks like he’s been struck by lightning, and it gets worse when the judge explains that Twin 2 remains immune, while the confession can be used as evidence against Twin 1.

Poor Kwan-woo is totally spun around, while Hye-sung and Do-yeon exchange conspiratorial glances. And then the thing they were really hoping for comes: Twin 1 stands up and says he confesses too, that Twin 2 was the mastermind and he did the stabbing.

Down they go, two twins sold up the river by each other. The courtroom erupts in a fight between them, and the whole time Twin 2’s girlfriend sits behind Lawyer Shin bawling her eyes out.

Lawyer Shin finds Hye-sung skipping out of the courtroom, and asks if she’s really that happy to put the twins away. She doesn’t see why she shouldn’t be happy, but he says she wasn’t a lawyer in there today—she was a prosecutor.

He asks if she never even bothered to ask WHY the twins killed that man. Seriously, it’s been niggling at me from the start, but no one asked! He points out a possible revenge scenario and asks if she never saw the crying woman in the courtroom.

She admits that she didn’t notice, not once. He tells her that if she behaves that way in the courtroom one more time, she won’t have the right to be a public defender. It leaves her reeling.

At home, she tells Su-ha about it over dinner, and he asks if she regrets teaming up with the prosecutor to put the twins away. She sighs that she doesn’t regret the outcome, but feels dirty about it, “Like I wiped my ass with paper covered in curry.” Ha, and ew.

She slams her head down on the table and whines, “Will you tell me ten times that I did a good job?” and he calls her childish. They’re so adorable.

Mom surprises Joon-gook with seaweed soup, saying that she noticed it was his birthday today, from his resume. Aw, he looks genuinely touched. Er, yunno, for a killer. He looks like he might actually be a little conflicted about murdering her.

Sung-bin approaches Su-ha at school with a math question decoy, hoping that he’ll act like nothing happened and still be friends with her. I like that her actions are so blatant you don’t really need to read her mind at all.

He hears her thinking that she’d hate it if he acted differently around her, and hoping that if they can pretend her embarrassing confession didn’t happen, he at least won’t reject her outright. Aw.

He does exactly that, because he’s awesome.

His phone rings, and it’s Joon-gook. Thankfully Su-ha has the sense to record the call this time, and he runs to the police station right away.

He plays the call, where Joon-gook says he moved and adds, “I won’t ever forget you.” Su-ha says it’s a threat, and Nice Cop believes him, but Cranky Cop says he’s overreacting.

Su-ha asks where Joon-gook moved to and reads Nice Cop’s mind, and is horrified to hear that he should’ve asked where he was moving. “You don’t know?” Cranky Cop tells him not to make trouble, raising his arm to hit him over the head again.

But this time Su-ha blocks it himself and glares back. “If you don’t do anything, I might find and kill him first.”

Hye-sung continues to get the cold shoulder from Lawyer Shin, who’s reverted to jondae with her. She sees him being dodgy about lunch and declares loudly that she has plans with a friend, only to end up eating alone bitterly.

Of course the others end up walking into the same restaurant, so she hilariously grabs her bowl of food and ducks under the table to continue eating. Ha. She hears Kwan-woo tell the others that he went to see the twins, and found out that they killed the storeowner for revenge after all—he had raped Twin 2’s girlfriend and threatened to leak photos if she reported him. Scum.

Lawyer Shin says they went about it all wrong, and should’ve gotten the twins to confess together from the beginning, with all the contributing factors considered in the judgment.

They ask Kwan-woo if he isn’t mad that Hye-sung went behind his back to team up with the prosecution. He admits now that he knew what was going on, but says that she must’ve had her reasons.

Lawyer Shin says Hye-sung was wrong, but Kwan-woo says, “I don’t think she was wrong. Just different from me.” I love the little wordplay callbacks on this show.

Hye-sung gets outed for eating lunch alone and hiding, which is even more embarrassing now that she’s clearly been listening to their conversation about her. She walks out, and Kwan-woo chases after her to repeat that he meant what he said. She insists that she isn’t sorry and that she wasn’t wrong, and he agrees.

Now that that’s out of the way, she asks if he wants to see a movie with her. She swears it’s not a date, but tells him not to wear his glasses, his hair that way, or his black shoes with white socks. Uh-huh, not a date.

Su-ha passes by a street vendor selling teddy bears with a sign: “Let the girlfriend/boyfriend you love hear your voice.” He plays with the teddy bear, and there’s pretty much nothing cuter on earth.

He heads home, bear in hand, when suddenly that pickpocket from the other night comes charging down the street. He’s holding a knife, and Nice Cop is on his tail with a gun.

Su-ha stands in his way, and of course between cop with a gun and kid with a teddy bear, he chooses to try and get past Su-ha. But it only takes Su-ha one glance at his thoughts to get the jump on him, and he tackles him to the ground.

Nice Cop drops his gun in the tussle to handcuff him, and Su-ha reaches to pick it up. Eee. Don’t do that!

The cop stops him just in time and says they’ll handle it. Su-ha quips that he’s better at it than they are, and Nice Cop tells him they’ll make sure to give him a reward. He doesn’t care about that and would rather they do something about Min Joon-gook, which Nice Cop promises to stay on top of. Su-ha: “No you won’t. You’re lying. I don’t trust you.”

He comes home smiling at his teddy bear, just as Hye-sung is heading out in a red dress. He asks where she’s going and hears her thinking that he’d tease her if she said she was going on a date with Kwan-woo.

He doesn’t tease her, even as she gives the excuse that she’s rewarding him with a date because he stood up for her. He hears her think: “He told me what I really wanted to hear—that I was right, that I did a good job.”

He holds the teddy bear behind his back the whole time and smiles as she runs off on her date, and then when he goes home and pushes the teddy bear’s speaker, his voice comes out: “Jjang-byun, you did a good job,” over and over again. D’awwwww.

Kwan-woo struts down the street looking snazzy, per Hye-sung’s orders. He stops to check himself out in a store window to make sure he did everything she asked, and then makes cheesy finger guns at himself. Pfft, can’t hide the dork, even under that makeover.

Nice Cop turns the precinct upside-down and grabs Cranky Cop in a panic and whispers, “I think I lost my gun.”

OHMYGOD. Park Su-ha, did you take his gun?! Nononononononono.

I’m too panicked right now to register the cute and funny in this next scene, but I’m sure in retrospect it’ll be cute and funny: Hye-sung arrives for her date with Kwan-woo and debates whether or not to undo one of her buttons, deciding against it because he can’t handle her hotness. But she sees him waving at her from across the street looking handsome (and waving his foot in the air to show her his non-white socks), and decides to go for the extra button.

Before she can un-button her way to date night though, her phone rings. It’s Nice Cop, who calls to say that his gun went missing, and that he thinks Su-ha took it, adding that Su-ha said he’d kill Min Joon-gook himself.

Her heart lurches and she grabs the next cab she sees, leaving Kwan-woo calling out to her from across the street.

She remembers Su-ha hiding something behind his back when she was leaving the house, and thinks the worst. She calls him frantically, but he doesn’t answer because he’s in the shower. Mmm, shower. Wait, sorry. FOCUS.

She arrives just ahead of the cops, and darts upstairs barefoot, holding her heels and desperately trying to move faster. She dashes inside and finds Su-ha coming out of the shower, just as the cops knock on her door.

She shoves him into his room and tells him not to make a peep, and runs to the sink to douse her hair in water and wrap a towel around her head. Man, she’s quick on her feet. Also, I’m so verklempt right now that her first thought is to cover for him. Really, it’s so moving.

She comes outside, dripping wet and mascara running everywhere, and tells the cops that she was home all day and Su-ha isn’t here, and that she’s been keeping an eye on him and he hasn’t done anything bad.

They laugh sheepishly and say they know—they found the gun after all, and came here to tell her so. What. Oh phew. Listen, you are the most bumbling pair of cops I have ever met, but right now, I just want to hug you for finding your stupid gun. URG.

Hye-sung collapses in a heap of relief, and then belatedly rips Nice Cop a new one for scaring her like that. She cries that Su-ha would never do something like that and screams at them never to come around with accusations like that again because Su-ha isn’t that kind of kid.

He hears it all and asks if she really thought he stole the gun. She admits that she did, and then he catches her thinking, “Is he mad at me for suspecting him? What’s he thinking?”

He says he’s not thinking much of anything except that she must’ve been embarrassed with that face. She says she’s not embarrassed at all and struts away.

Once she’s in her room he adds, “And I was thinking… I have someone who worries about me now.” Oh, the warm fuzzies.

Hye-sung goes to her room and finally gets a look in the mirror. She gasps in horror: “Who are you?” Kwan-woo calls and she apologizes for running out, and says that a dongseng of hers got into some trouble but everything’s fine now.

She asks if he got home okay, and he hesitates before saying yes, and agreeing to see a movie next time. And then we cut to him down below in front of her building, drenched in sweat from running there. Aw.

He’s so good-natured that he just wishes he’d gotten more ice for the chocolates he bought her because they’re all melted now. He’s about to go home when Su-ha comes out on Hye-sung’s rooftop, looking very much like he just showered. Uh…

Kwan-woo recognizes him right away, and then they lock eyes, each looking at the other guy askance, like, What’s this clown doing here?

When Hye-sung comes out, Su-ha keeps her from coming too close to the ledge to see Kwan-woo, and offers to gather the laundry for her. He watches Kwan-woo walk away and makes a shooing gesture into the air.

As they fold laundry, she says Su-ha isn’t nearly as dumb as he looks, breaking out his grade report that she dug out of his stuff, and he totally climbs on top of her to get it back.

She wonders if he gets top-notch grades by cheating, but he swears it’s not that—he just naturally picks things up in class faster than the others because he can read the teacher’s mind.

He decides that her question is insulting, wondering why it’s a surprise that he’s smart. She doesn’t hesitate to say that he looks like a slacker punk, and when he adds his laser glare he’s downright scary.

Su-ha: “So you thought I stole the gun? Were you that scared?” Hye-sung: “I wasn’t scared. I was worried.”

She says that the twins murdered that man because they couldn’t believe in the law. “There are people like that here—you and me.” She tells him that no matter how much he wants to kill Min Joon-gook, not to ever kill him.

“If you do, then all the reasons disappear—what a terrible person Min Joon-gook is, why we hated him—those things disappear. The moment we kill him, we cease to be victims, and just become murderers.”

She makes him promise not to ever kill him for revenge, and cups his face with her hands, “Answer me.”

Su-ha: “And if Min Joon-gook tries to kill you?” She says not to kill him, even then, because she can defend herself. She takes another look at his report card and says that these grades are too good to be wasted on a murderer. Dude, he totally didn’t answer you. Make him answer!

Nice Cop asks his partner to keep his secret about the momentary gun misplacing fiasco, and Cranky Cop asks why he suspected Su-ha in the first place. Nice Cop says he saw Su-ha’s face the moment he reached for the gun earlier, calling the look in his eyes frightening.

Su-ha’s wearing that very same expression in his room that night, and then the following morning, he seeks out a wiretapping specialist to trace Min Joon-gook’s cell phone number.

He sits in his room and contemplates his grades… and crumples up the paper and tosses it away. No. Min Joon-gook sits in his room contemplating the birthday food that Hye-sung’s mom made for him… and flushes it down the toilet. Damn, so it’s war, is it?

And then, we see Su-ha sitting in the dark holding a switchblade, looking quite determined to make a terrible mistake.

COMMENTS

Man, they weren’t kidding about the look in his eye. When he wants to be, he’s downright scary, just like Hye-sung said. I really thought he took the gun too. He seems completely capable of it, though in hindsight he’d be smarter and buy his own gun, which is actually scarier. Gah, when Joon-gook was stalking Hye-sung with the creepy phone calls I wanted to put her in a bubble, but now I want to throw Su-ha in there and lock him up and throw away the key.

This turn in the story is terrifying, but in a really good way. We’re already so attached to Su-ha, and when your hero is a teenage hothead, there’s this nervousness and an edge to the darker turns in his character, because he could just choose the really dumb thing and throw himself under the bus to protect her thinking it’s the best he can do. I love the tension that creates. You so want him to be smart and listen to her, but he feels like he has nothing to lose, which is really dangerous.

But that’s also why the longer arc of him gaining a family is so great—because for Su-ha, it’s literally his lifeline. Right now he’d throw his life away in a heartbeat, which is so sad it hurts my heart. He has no ties to anyone, and just a sense of responsibility to protect Hye-sung at all cost. But when she shows her concern for him in this episode, and when he says for the first time that he’s gained someone in his life to worry about him—that was such a great moment of connection. That she had to ditch her date with Kwan-woo to come to his rescue was just a bonus (sorry adorable Kwan-woo, I do luff you, but my heart wants what it wants).

Mostly I’m just happy to find a new drama that hits all the right buttons for me. It’s Biscuit Teacher Star Candy but with less art and more murder (a good thing, believe it or not), and a set of characters I root for and want to protect like tiny puppies in the rain. Sometimes the cases of the week can drag the momentum down, but overall they serve a story/character beat in each episode, which makes them feel purposeful, even if they’re considerably less exciting than scenes between our main characters. The things we explore with Hye-sung through the cases is what wins me over each time, because she makes huge mistakes, and the people around her—Su-ha, Lawyer Shin, or even her nemesis Do-yeon—don’t let her get away with it. It’s the dynamic that you can’t ignore. She was happy that Kwan-woo told her what she wanted to hear, but I was happy that Su-ha told her what she didn’t want to hear about herself: the cold, hard truth.

congrats alexio. thanks GF. and yay noona crushes.

*pre-kicks herself for saying this but*.... While I find Ivoire's constant first-posting to be INTENSELY annoying......the absence of it makes me sort of worried.

I'm being paranoid right? this is not an occasion for us to call the authorities?

I don't get why people are annoyed when Ivoire posts first. Who cares? Does it really matter to you that much? Let her be.

Given everything that's wrong w the world, I doubt that Ivoire always being first here warrants "INTENSE annoyance". ;)

You're not alone, it annoys me too. No, it's not that big a deal and I probably wouldn't have commented if I hadn't seen this same sentiment from someone else, but it gets progressively more irritating as you see it in 50 or more posts. Comments are meant for actually, ya know, commenting on something. I get she's grateful for this site (I am too), but I don't think the rushed "Thanks!" conveys anything genuine. Let's be honest, it's just another way of doing the prior "First!" comments.

I think it is not the being first all the time that is annoying folks, it is the fact that the posts are usually one word with no content. So obviously the intent is to be first poster, not to say anything relevant.

So I realized why I really shipped hye-sung with su-ha. Aside from all their cuteness, I looked at compatibility. There’s that scene where hye sung says that kwan-woo is someone who says the stuff she what she wants to hear, that she wasn’t wrong and that she did good. Except, she knows that she didn’t do good, she just doesn’t want to admit it. That is evident when she feels sour after the case but has no idea why. If it takes su-ha to knock her off her high horse so be it. It’s those moments where he totally bursts her overly confident bubble that i appreciate, because otherwise a heroine like that without change will be rather frustrating. Understandable at first, then just downright irritating towards the end. Kwan-Woo tends to kiss people’s feet and worship them, and that’s the last thing our heroine needs. Kwan-woo is still so adorable, and he cleaned up really well for that date. It seems like Yoon sang hyun always has really moist eyes or he squirts something in em. They’re always sparkly and brimming with heart, which totally goes well with his character.
Thanks for the recap, GF! I knew you'd make the comparison to biscuit eventually.

I also find it so hilarious how Lee Bo Young adds that distinct swaying-of-the-hips "sexy" walk to her character. It's so hilarious and gives hye-sung some of that sassy flavor to her already egoistic self.

She is killing it in this role. She has just the right amount of bitchy, vulnerable, arrogant, and insecure. She's playing it flawlessly. I love our h because she's so HUMAN with all the weaknesses and strengths that come with. I've liked Lee Bo Young more with each role I've seen her in and thought she'd peaked with My Daughter Seo Young. But she's managed to be even better here.

This is actually the first project of hers i'm watching, so i wasn't too sure what to expect going in. I find her to be a natural with the character she's given -- bold, sassy, sharp tongued, etc. I'm going to admit that there were times where I felt annoyed with her for it, but realized that that might just be because lee bo young is doing a really good job at portraying her.
Even now sometimes i want to slap her when she says hurtful things or is bitchy towards su-ha when he did nothing wrong but tell her the truth. I think that speaks volumes about her character and gives it some more depth with some of these imperfections.

I think it is a mixture of her acting and a good script. Really! What a detailed script.
Also, the director is pretty good with details as well. I knew Suha didn't take the gun because afterwards the cop was holding it in his hand and talking to Suha. It was a minute detail but I remember it because I was like, STOP WAVING THAT THING EVERYWHERE. lol.

"I knew Suha didn’t take the gun because afterwards the cop was holding it in his hand and talking to Suha. It was a minute detail but I remember it because I was like, STOP WAVING THAT THING EVERYWHERE. lol."

This was me! The way the director really made you pay attention to the gun made me focus on it. And the way it was continually in the shot as they took the pickpocket away made me think Nice Cop was going to accidentally shoot Su-ha. I was so scared for Su-ha! Wow, the cops are useless in this drama.

I totally agree with you about Kwan-woo and his just naturally appealing personality with people because he always says the right things, the things the other person wants to hear. That's definitely not healthy because no improvements can be made.

"It seems like Yoon sang hyun always has really moist eyes or he squirts something in em. They’re always sparkly and brimming with heart, which totally goes well with his character."

^Omg, LOL. That sentence is so funny and sweet. haha. I've been wondering if he wears circle lenses are something because they have such a depth to them or maybe it's natural. Ever since Secret Garden I've noticed his eyes are always emotive and sparkly too. It's like they have a life of its own. he's a cute one indeed.

That's exactly what it is. Su Ha demands that Hye Sung be the person she knows she should be; not just accepting her cynical "take the easy way" exterior. She knows what's right, and he forces her to make those tough decisions. Kwan Woo is too willing to pat her on the back and only look for the good in anything she does. Su Ha loves her, but he won't accept less then her at her best. And that makes him the right one for her.

Of course the fact that he's so adorable and protective doesn't hurt either. How sweet was the scene where he pulled her behind him before calling out the would be robber? And just the fact that I worry that he'd easily throw his own future away to save her, kills me.

I agree. I was reminded a little of Maru in the beginning of Nice Guy. The kind of self-sacrifice that ruins everything. But at least Maru had some family ties to force him along. I wonder where Su-ha lives, how he has money for his school uniform, if his uncle did emigrate and leave him behind...

No self-esteem problem for our heroine this time! Great point about Hye Sung in no way needing anyone to feed her ego.
That is the one thing that thus far has bugged me about KW with her. Right now he definitely tends to put people he likes on a pedestal and his desire to see the best in people can obscure his ability to push them to grow. It's fantastic that he can look beyond his own way of doing things and understand that others can be right in their own way too, but there has to be balance. You can still acknowledge what someone did right while also pointing out where they went wrong.
It's still early in the show so there is time for him to grow if the writer wants to do it. And if he does, I'll be more likely to give him a chance. It's not just our heroine who needs to grow around here :)

Really?! Oh no, I hadn't noticed.

Speaking of Do Yeon, I'm wondering if part of the reason she became a prosecutor wasn't family pressure, but regret that she didn't step in as a witness. Maybe she feels some guilt and is determined to see others who are guilty not get away with their crimes. I hope I'm not giving her too much credit, but she does seem a little more layered than standard bratty 2nd female lead...so far :)

OR it could be a simple mistake on the director's part.. eg using the same phone for the "ill be there" message scene and for Hye Sung and Do Yeon's convo scene. If it is really meant to be in the plot, it would be weird because Hye Sung sent Do Yeon the message, thus she had Do Yeon's cellphone number in the first place. Would've been cool otherwise though. :/

As much as I love the Su-Ha and Hyesung duo and I love their scenes together, (I may be a minority) but I'm not feeling the romance angle intended. It's very cute that Su-Ha has a crush on her. I do like how it goes way deeper with his whole life on the line for her and how Hyesung is developing a close bond/connection with him. But even with ALL that, I really do not see myself shipping them and it's not even the age difference or anything. I just rather prefer their connection to be a close noona/dongsaeng relationship and it just feels already so perfect that way.

And I do agree with the policeman that Lee Jong Suk and Bo Young really do look like real siblings in this drama.... :o

I love Lawyer Cha and how understanding he can be with Hyesung and their chemistry and interactions are great as well. I guess I'm not a hardcore shipper for anyone in this drama because for Lawyer Cha and Hyesung, I like their connection just as it is right now with the bickering fun as colleagues and friends (possibly?). I seriously do enjoy them as just friends and although this drama would probably not steer towards this path. Just the pure connection of a male and female as friends is rare.

I guess it might still be early but yeah this is one of the few dramas where I really don't ship or really want characters to end up together (yet... maybe :/). I just want to focus on the storyline and although the glimpses of jealousy and romance are fun, I'm really not invested in that portion as much as the other viewers.

I agree, they are really cute as big sis/little brother. You notice the way they wrestle with each other without it getting awkward? So adorable. I do not need a scene where they fall on top of each other and lay there with their hearts thumping but refusing to get up. Just stay Noona/Dongsaeng that's what both of you really need anyway.

I think cops in K-dramas are a whipping post for writers :)

They are almost always portrayed as corrupt, brutal, incompetent, or all of the above. I see this even in cop/crime dramas - Heartless City for example you have the main cop who goes around not using his brain much, but beating the crap out of every witness and suspect. After a while it gets annoying.

I loved your comments at the end, particularly about SH's character not telling her what she wanted to hear. I thought that was HUGELY important. Of course we all need and want to be encouraged, but that's not always what we need in the moment. SH is great about telling her what she needs to hear when she really needs to hear it and I think we are starting to see that she is going to do the same for him. This means everything to me, not just in a romantic relationship, but a relationship period.
Of course I have my hopes for how their relationship will turn out, but at the end of the day, I'm just happy they are connecting at all. They need each other in a good way and if they walk away at the end just as older sister-younger brother, they are both going to be better for it. But I'll hold on to hope for a little more for now :)

At this point I just can't see her hooking up with Kwan Woo, they are just too different. Who she would end up with then becomes an open question.

Kwan reminds me a bit of some schools a while back that started giving out awards for everything - even just showing up - to build "self esteem" (I think most of us know what an excess of self esteem can do by now). I guess it started with Pollyanna, but the fact is that praising people for a half-a$$ed job like Kwan did might make her feel good, but it does nothing to encourage them to improve.

I see merits in Do-yeon, and I'm convinced that there was some reason she accused Hye-sung 10 years ago. I'm not saying the reason was right, but it wasn't done to be mindlessly evil. She has her flaws but also her attributes, making her a balanced character, like Hye-sung. She's not an evil villain that's just placed there to be an obstacle to the main OTP, and I can totally see her becoming friends with Hye-sung eventually (once they both get over their pride and complexes and history).

Also, this is going to sound strange, but I like the way the killer is written. He's smart and great at manipulation. He's two steps ahead at all times, knowing how to push the right buttons without casting suspicion on himself. He keeps the plot moving, preventing it from getting stale and repeating itself. Really, the only evil things he has done since getting out of prison is placing the cell-phone in Hye-sung's apartment and stealing the poster. And yet, I'm terrified of him. I wonder what his backstory is too...what if he is what Su-Ha seems to be becoming? Especially given his expression when HS's mom cooked him birthday food.

Pairing wise, my love for Su-Ha and Hye-sung has grown infinitely. I cannot stand the KW-HS ship. Su-Ha tells Hye-sung when she's wrong and forces her to re-evaluate her decisions. KW just seems to idolize her and overlook all her flaws. Which is fine, but doesn't help her grow at all.

Also, I was happy that they considered the whole help-your-client-even-when-guilty vs. out-your-client-because-they're-guilty. I've always been conflicted about this when thinking of criminal lawyers so I'm glad they provided both perspectives. At first, I was annoyed that Lawyer Shin was being an ass to HS again but in the end, I actually really agreed with Lawyer Shin's opinion that they should have tried to get the clients to plead guilty but get the sentence lowered due to circumstance. It's like the merging of the extremes: Lawyer Cha being too convinced in the innocence of his client and Lawyer Jang trying to give them due punishment for their crime without considering circumstance.

She accused HS 10 years ago bcos HS saw her cheating in class, so she beat HS to the punch, to take away HS's chance to out her, and credibility in case she does. That's an evil child's doing, or you can say that she was too afraid of her father to let it be known that she cheated in exams.

Required fields are marked *

Yea, I have some serious issues with the way she handles her job. Prosecutors have a duty to find the truth. Public defenders have a duty to protect their clients interests, no matter what. It's how the adversarial legal system works and its the only way to protect the rights of criminal defendants within an adversarial legal system. She totally ignores the duty she has to her client and works against her client's interests. She would be disbarred for that in the US, and rightly so, and could be held legally accountable.

Required fields are marked *

Agreed that it couldn't be proved but my point is really that it was incredibly wrong to do what she did, even if she thought her client might be guilty. It's the prosecutor's job to weigh evidence fairly; it's the defense's job to fight like hell for her client.

I agree with this, I found this to be a huge flaw in the writing, unless Korean law ethics are different. It doesn't matter if the client is guilty, it's the pd's job to provide defense and advise the client a best possible scenario, not to work with the prosecutor that is possibly suppressing evidence and cant prove her case in order to force a confession. HS crossed the line and could be held legally accountable. That said, it is naive to think that prosecutors, defense attorneys and even judges haven't predetermined how they will handles the cases.

ah, but as an officer of the court and in the interests of the justice system as a whole, doesn't a lawyer also have an ultimate duty to try and ensure that important evidence is made available to the court?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

No. As an officer of the court she has a duty not to lie to the court. Otherwise her duty is solely to her client. I am a prosecutor here in the US and I shouldn't have watched this drama. I make it a point to never watch any legal show because they are so inaccurate but I figured Korean dramas would be so different I would not notice. No such luck. In America she would be disbarred. If a defense attorney ever suggested they work with me to convict someone I would report them to the bar myself. I am a prosecutor not an omnipotent god. I can (and have!) been completely wrong about a case. Both of them are shady as hell. First without evidence the prosecutor never should have attempted to try them as co-principles. As they say it doesn't matter what I think it only matters what I can prove. Everything HY said to DY at the end last week was absolutely right. So for HY to then side with the prosecutor whose behavior was already unethical by being even more unethical herself just disgusted me. This woman is so bad at her I can no longer watch the show. I don't mind a bumbling heroine when she works at something like a coffee shop but these are peoples lives and it totally ruined the character and the show for me.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, we can all feel outrage at how bad the bumbling cops are but HY is beyond just being a bumbling lawyer for me now. And her constant "wooo, skippety-do-dah I'm so great" moments have now become truly offensive to me. Lawyer Shin is the only one I can admire in this courthouse and he's at fault for not supervising properly.

0

Heehee, I guess I can understand where you're coming from but personally I tend to just suspend reality when I watch any dramas.

Also, considering she's in a world with mind-readers, I'll let it pass :)

0

I agree - Lawyer Shin was the only one that really "got it". None of the others - prosecutor or lawyers - dug into the background enough to know the whole story, so all three failed at really getting "justice" rather than what they thought they should do.

I suspect we might see more of the twins story in a future episode though, so who knows.

Whether Su Ha gets the girl or not, it does seem to me he is mature for his age, more mature than Cha or SH, perhaps bcos he was orphaned and has been able to hear ppl's thoughts fr an earlier age.

"I don’t care if its as a couple or in a sister/ brother relationship Su-ha just needs a family."

Same here. I think this is the first time in k-drama where i wouldn't mind if our characters ended up kind of like sibs or if this show decided to take the romantic route. Shouldn't it be weird how it could really go both ways and most of us don't care? ha. Su-ha is so lonely. Even our murderer(who i shall never forgive no matter how much show makes him sympathetic) is lonely.
I think our writer is onto something with this reoccurring theme and i think more than anything it's the journey to find a home and a family.

Just what I was thinking :) Right now, for me, it's not so much about the romance or the love triangle.

They've all got a past family-related trauma or missing tie that's shaped them (although having said that, I've got no objections whatsoever to cutie Su-ha teddy bear scenes or shower scenes!)

Someone astutely pointed out - think it was @whilethemusiclasts (further below) - that Do-yeon was actually adopted. So it sounds like she's also got some family issues to sort out. There's even a scene in Ep 1 after the fireworks incident where Hye-sung refuses to visit DY in hospital, 'cos "it's not like she's family", but her Awesome Mum tells her (with a smack alongside the head) that she's lived in the same the household for 10 yrs, and "that means they're family".

There's probably more to the Min Joon-gook backstory too, and I really like how they're using each case to reveal more about our main characters and what makes them tick.

Oska was literally 50 feet away from her; all she had to do was yell across the intersection before jumping in the cab. It irks me to no end when people in dramas run off without explanation or simply don't show up and have people waiting hours for them when everyone has the most expensive cellphone on the market and a five second phone call can save everyone some trouble.

2) I'm not buying the "Oska just tells her what she wants to hear while Suha gives it to her strait" argument. I admit, Oska is a little blinded by his crush but he doesn't take it easy on her when it counts (like in the courtroom or when he told he she needs to believe in her clients). I think, with the twins case, he was just giving her the benefit of the doubt and trying to see it from her perspective. Everyone seems to be forgetting that Suha also tried to tell Hyesung what she wanted to hear (and in the form of an adorable bear, no less) but Oska just beat him to it.

3) I just want Hyesung and Doyeon to hug it out and be besties. Also, I want more from Doyeon than for her to be the antagonistic prosecutor every week (is she the Only Prosecutor in Seoul, by the way?) They've hinted that there is more to her but that lasted all of three seconds. They seem to want us to root for her a little but they have given us very little reason to.

4) Get rid of the stupid cops or make them pure comic relief. I'm tired of such dumb characters having so much influence on the plot.

That's about it for this episode. It was a pretty awesome one.

The cops in this show are falsely misrepresented and also annoy the heck out of me every time they're on screen. It's like we're all shouting at them to take our characters seriously and they're just like whatever in a condescending manner. Good to know south korea's tax money is being put to good use. I'm just going to try to overlook it since this show is all about the comedy and they don't take themselves too seriously.

I would overlook it if the stupid stuff they do wasn't actually relevant to the plot. Like not following up on stalking leads, not being concerned when a convicted murderer calls a kid who helped send him to prison even after promising you that he was moving away to avoid the kid, dropping a gun in front of an angsty teenager (I know he didn't pick it up but he could have). Everything dumb move they make is helping the bad guy. If the writers love the cops that much, they should just make them gag characters and let Big bad work his revenge on his own.

I do like that they are an excuse for Suha and Hyesung to keep living together. So thanks for that.

gosh, I don't think this show is all about the comedy at all. There's so much dark stuff in this show and has been from the start, I think that makes it different.

I agree with everything you said again~
It does seem to be against Drama Law to notify people when something comes up. I mean, she took a taxi home, at least she could have texted him or called him when she was just sitting in that taxi, right? I felt the same way about Su-ha's muscles just deciding to give up and drop the phone during that confession last episode.

About Su-ha telling Hyesung what she wants to hear, I also
thought that bear kindof worked against the point they were clearly trying to make with Kwan-woo only telling her what she needs to hear. BUT, at least he only does that after he makes sure she's going to do the right thing.

Right... how hard could it have been to say "Sungbin, hold that thought. I'll call you right back." I've never seen something so shocking that my arms just refused to work.

I absolutely agree with your #4!!! "Get rid of the stupid cops or make them pure comic relief. I’m tired of such dumb characters having so much influence on the plot."

UGH, I, too, absolutely hate stupid cops!! At least, Smiley believed it might be a threat when they heard the recorded call. Cranky cop makes me want to slap him upside his head every time he opens his mouth. I'm glad Soo Ha called Smiley out on his "Don't worry about Min Joon Gook...We're taking care of it." Liars, indeed!

And, Smiley had his gun in his hand - WAVING IT AROUND - when he was saying thanks to Soo Ha. An able, competent cop would have already holstered it!!

Agreed on Kwan Woo. I don't actually think that he tells her what she wants to hear per se. It seems to me that he respects that she has a different viewpoint and trusts that she will come round eventually. My take is that he is putting his faith on that she will do a good job, rather than just blindsiding her.

However, I was very disappointed with Hye Sung in this episode. Regardless whether the twins murdered the store owner for revenge, she is their defence lawyer and should be working to defend them. It does not make a difference that she found out they have a "valid" reason and feels guilty and is thus taken off the hook. Her behavior is lacking in professional ethics.

Although it may be argued that Su Ha was forcing her to own up to her mistakes when he told her that the twins were guilty and that Doyeon was thinking of working with her to get her verdict, it can also be said that his faith in her morality was what got her to violate her professional ethics.

Very unfortunately, as lawyers, their morals need to be suspended sometimes.

I've never felt so excited about a drama since Nice Guy! What makes me love the drama besides the storyline is the chemistry between Lee Bo Young and Lee Jong Suk. They're so purrrpekt together! Can't believe they're 10 years apart.

I was really bothered by SH as a defense attorney colluding with a prosecutor. You would think that should be enough for some ethics violations at the very least.

Don't even get me started on the Keystone cops. Oy!

Maybe I'm just cranky today. :)

Oh yeah, which is why for the first time i didn't think lawyer shin was being petty and agreed with him when he said she was behaving like a prosecutor in the courtroom, not a public defender. No matter if you find out your client is guilty or innocent, you defend them to the very end. Or you find a way to get them a lesser sentence, cause that's what lawyers do. Imagine if only prosecutors ran the courtroom. Disaster.

I think I can't love this show any more and then they bring in game theory(The Prisoner's Dilemma). Very interesting how the case wrapped up in a bittersweet way. Hye-sung deserved to feel conflicted since she is, at the end of the day, a defense lawyer even though she wants justice. While I understand Lawyer's Shin rant, I can't help but think he needs to do a better job of mentoring her. It seemed that was supposed to be his role as the sunbae and he definitely has given Kwan-woo a lot of direction. I know she really made a bad first impression and continues to offend him with her attitude but people's lives at stake!

I had forgotten that Su-ha and his dad had just planned to go to the aquarium before he was killed, thanks for the reminder. Love the tie-in with Su-ha staring at fish tanks and now I understand the setting of the opening credits. I think it's also significant imagery because hearing/sound is so different underwater.

Hye-sung's revolving door lost-in-thought spins remind me so much of Dream High Hye-mi's head-desk contemplations/conversations. It's great how this writer adds little quirks to make the characters more complex.

I continue to love how much Su-ha challenges Hye-sung and makes her evaluate her decisions and take the high road. That's what makes him so much of a better partner for her(in my opinion). I hope she can have the same effect on him.

One more intense episode.. it's totally deep n funny at the same time... i agree with GF he's like puppy i want to protect when it's rain. For su-ha, Feel neglected for his whole life, can make anybody changes to something really bad or really good. But when revenge taking over, he might do something reckless in the end...
Su-ha fighting!! You're not alone... don't do thing's u'll regret.. u have hyesung... u can start feel the happiness when u have family.

Each case makes me nervous for the ultimate case of Min Joon Gook.. why did he kill Su Ha's father? Why was Su Ha never curious? I am.

But the scariest thing was how it showed both Su Ha and Min Joon Gook were similar.. Both are rejecting the good things in their life and choosing the dark side. Very interesting!

i was also wandering about that, but the drama never went there, i remember the killer saying to the girls when they hid from him that the reason he killed SH's dad that he couldn't keep his mouth shut.

i don't think SH and the killer is both similar, they both chose the dark side, but i think their reason's are different, while the killer chose revenge, SH is trying to protect HS who is the closet thing he have for a family.

My faaaavorite scene, however, was the stare down between the two male leads. Ha! I love that they're both jelouse.

I want Lawyer Jang and Soo-ha to end up together cause his puppy love is just so adorable but I think they just end up as close friends. Hrump!

i'm liking the cases and what they do for hyesung's character. but i'm scared for suha. hyesung's right in what she said to him. i know he probably won't pull a crazy makjang move, but still, i'm nervous. and for the murderer, i hope kindness gets to him.

here's to hoping there's a change of heart for both killer and suha.

i wanna write a sonnet about this show, i feel that gushy about it. it actually reminds me a little of me too, flower (lee ji-ah & yoon si-yoon). like this, i had zip expectations for that show, but i ended up loving it to death.

ironically, kim jae-won was supposed to star in me too, flower before he got hurt, and based on previous DB posts, it seems he was also considered for this show too. guess he either turned it down or was ultimately passed over. either way, it would have been great for him to have been able to star in both. excellent (italicize that!) dramas.

the twins' case took a nice turn. they had me there for a moment with the creepy smiles, that maybe they were psychopaths. it was a nice and thought provoking moment when hye-sung was reprimanded. we knew she had the best intentions in the world, but she fell short in a way we hadn't anticipated, and it's so great to watch her growth in this drama.

"though in hindsight he’d be smarter and buy his own gun" <-- actually since Korea has more gun regulations than the US so buying his own gun would likely be more difficult.

Also, I wasn't as worried about the gun being with SuHa because in the scene, the cop actually grabs the gun away. It's a small movement that is barely caught on camera but, after SuHa stops mid-grab, the cop grabs the gun and goes back to his hold on the thief.

However, I'm now getting goosebumps over what SuHa is doing with a switchblade. While SuHa may pursue JinGook as is the stronger suggestion with that alternating-JinGook-SuHa-shots juxtaposition, the phone tracking service store also does CCTV. Perhaps he's going to set up some surveillance cameras/recording devices? ... argh dying to find out. Next Wednesday feels too far.

Gee. If you hate this show, just stop watching it will do. There are many others who obviously love this show so stop trying to convince people otherwise. One's cup of tea may not be the same for another. You're entitled to dislike this show for all you like but don't you go about telling others what to do. We love this show and we will watch this show AS WE LIKE.

Required fields are marked *

Hm. My take on her is that she is meant to be annoying, that we are meant to be a little uncomfortable about her; I think the point here is that the "good guys" have their issues as well as the "bad guys", and that the path of being good and doing right is a little more complicated because you are dealing with human beings with egos and anger.

About dropping the show; if you would like to, that is fine, but if you are going to post such a suggestion, it can only get respect if you give more specific reasons than just "boring and boring" - what is the show missing, from your POV? Would another actress have worked better for this role - if so, who? If this is the worst drama you have ever watched, what are you comparing it to? Just wondering.

Interesting, I think that the dislike that LJS felt for YSH in Secret Garden showed in his acting - there was always an undercurrent of thinly-veiled dislike that worked really well for the relationship dynamics; I wasn't sure if it was a manifestation of self-loathing, or if his character had a love/hate feeling for Oska, perhaps hating Oska because Oska brought out these feelings of attraction. Anyway, it was a very layered approach that made me a fan of both actors.

I don't want SuHa to go to jail and HyeSung to try bailing him out... One part of me is scared SuHa might do something wrong to make him get into trouble and end up in jail and come back after years as a matured man.... Also I hope the astrology prediction of HyeSung and Kang Woo doesn't come true...Hope they just remain as good friends.
Like HyeSung said, SuHa is too bright to loose his future over some rashness. Even though he is protecting her, I pray his actions doesn't become violent and rash. I hope he uses some smart plans to nail the killer down.
I wish HyeSung realizes how much SuHa means to her and she can't do without him and learn that her feelings for him runs deeper than just dongseng-noona relationship. It's just she doesn't realize it now since she sees his as her protector/ benefactor and a dongseng.

SuHa clenching his heart and soaking the rain when looking at HyeSung and Kang Woo in the Episode 5 says it all: his real feelings for her- Love. Even after his perfect image of his first love-SuHa crashed down, he is still around her, protecting her and being there for her...awwww...they should just end up together.

Can't stand the two dimwits cops. Can't believe they ever graduated from a police academy. How long will it be before they believe Hye Sung and Su Ha's lives are in danger from the creepy psycho? No wonder Su Ha is getting scary looking eyes and is packing a big knife and maybe the stupid policeman's revolver to protect himself and Hye Sung.

Interesting twists and turns on the twins' murder case. Never heard about the Prisoners Dilemma before. Pays to get a good smart lawyer.
