Kim Woo-bin in Heirs, rejoice!

SBS is really going all-out in casting Heirs (or He Who Wears the Crown, Endure Its Weight: Heirs), with all the hot young stars it’s drawn into its casting net: The latest is none other than Kim Woo-bin (School 2013, Vampire Idol, White Christmas), which should make some people very happy. He’ll join Lee Min-ho and Park Shin-hye, our two leads, and add even more pretty to the mix.

(I recall reading comments after the last casting tease about Choi Jin-hyuk that the only downside to Choi being added was that dreams of Kim Woo-bin joining were dashed. Well, let this be a lesson to you all: Never accept an either-or situation when you can have BOTH. Greediness is happiness!)

Granted, there is the caveat that Choi Jin-hyuk is yet unconfirmed: The last we heard was that he was “considering favorably.” One more possibility currently being floated is f(x) idol Krystal, who is reportedly working out her schedule and in talks with drama producers.

I don’t have a strong opinion about Krystal, but at least I don’t actively dislike her or find her a horrible actress. I never really loved her character in High Kick 3, and it took practically 100 episodes for me to warm to her, and yes she does have this aloofness to her personality that can be off-putting. Despite all that, I’m okay with her joining this cast; she’s got screen presence and is age-appropriate and isn’t our lead, so that’s fine.

Kim Woo-bin has worked with this writer (Kim Eun-sook) before in A Gentleman’s Dignity, where he played a high school troublemaker (before then playing another high school troublemaker in School 2013), so the casting makes sense. He’s got loads of charisma and onscreen intensity and really beautifully odd features (hottest alien vampire rockstar ever). He (and Lee Jong-seok) carried the charm of School 2013, even though when you think about it Kim Woo-bin’s role in that was actually quite small—he was a catalyst and an object, but not really an active player, but still commanded your attention. He is currently working out final contract details.

Heirs purports to be a Gossip Girl–esque trendy drama set in a high school populated by the uber-rich, and with writer Kim at the helm we can expect lots of fast-flying banter and glossy characters. Sometimes Kim’s style works for me, sometimes I hate it with the burning fire of a thousand venereal diseases. I know which one I’m hoping for this time out.

Heirs is being prepped as an October drama on SBS.

The dramagods are fickle. Yes, they Please you by casting WB - but then, they will laugh at your despair when the writers give him nothing to do but moon about after Park Shin Hye, as the Doomed Second Lead.
I don't like PSH that much now - if this happens, I will (totally irrationally) like her even less. I want him to get the girl, okay show? Dramagods, are you listening?

Well, this casting is shaping up nicely, for the male part at least. As for Kristal, I don't know her.
We also don't know what part those 2 will play exactly. Just thinking that the script is being written right now: Vertigo. 5 months and counting for the premiere... #PleaseBeGood

Who cares abt Krystal? She was bad in Hi-K 3; her char was horrible, her acting didn't make it better.

Krystal wasn't bad in High Kick 3, granted I only watched the first 20 episodes but she seemed fairly natural, even if her character was annoying (and supposed to be).

I personally find it amusing that she was playing Lee Jong-suk's sister in HK3, and is now in a show with LJS's School 2013 BFF.

Yeah, I was already resolved not to watch this because the two leads aren't a particular draw for me and Jonghwa's casting was sorta the nail in the coffin. Then he withdrew. Still don't particularly care for the two leads, but Woo Bin!

I will watch only for Woo Bin. And if it turns out a mess of a drama or boring (nothing saying it will, just thinking Faith, Big and other disappointments), I'll just watch his scenes!

Same here, I feel like I am the rope in a tug of war:
LMH, not that great an actor but he is OK - that's a plus.
writer of the hated AGD - that's a minus.
PSH and her lack of fire - that's a minus (plus, I'm tired of her)
CJH, fresh off Gu and on a roll - that's a plus
High School dramas=light and stupid - that's a minus
KWB and his charisma - that's a plus
KWB as Doomed Second Lead - that's a minus

I am going to have to watch, but I am prepared to hate it. And fangirls ALWAYS ask, 'why do you watch it if you hate it so much?' Well, if you don't wade through the minuses, how are you ever going to enjoy the pluses? There is no such thing as a perfect drama, and to wait for one means watching nothing.

I am the same! I love Yong-hwa, and could not wait for my daily dose of him even though he can't act, so I was sad about his departure. But with Woo-bin..... I KNOW I will suffer the worst second lead syndrome known to man!!!!!! Bring on the crappy teenage angsty romance... cause this cast rocks!

not just this site, it's everywhere. the girls will always get more crap. i've given up feeling angry about it and just expect it. which is even sadder when i think about it. we're talking k-drama here. it's not exactly deep stuff attracting high-brow audience only.

anyway, i'm one of woobin's biggest fan and i see that he's not a great actor. he has good moments but overall he just gets a passing grade. good thing is from his interviews, he knows he's not good yet! so hopefully he can improve.

Now I'm crossing my fingers that it's not Krystal. Sorry but she is not very likable. Even if that's how she naturally is, and it's not like she has to be fake and bubbly, but Krystal has always rubbed me the wrong way.

It's interesting how many people just automatically dislike her because of that aloof aura, whereas I think a male idol/actor would be called mysterious or cool for behaving in the exact same way. He certainly wouldn't be followed around by the word 'bitch.'

And she's actually pretty dorky/hyper when you watch f(x)'s reality shows.

No, there are plenty of male actors that I don't find likable.

I said "not likable" - I never threw out the word "bitch"...Other actresses I find not likable? Shin Se Kyung, Nam Gyuri, Lee Da Hae.

And there are actually a lot of female actresses that are chic or cool that ARE likable. Don't be so offended if there's something about Krystal that rubs me the wrong way. Is everyone supposed to see what you see about her?

....I wasn't attacking you personally, nor was my tone hostile, so I don't understand the defensiveness.

I was talking about how people in general view Krystal, and whenever her image and personality come up, the words 'aloof,' 'unlikeable,' and 'bitch' seem to be used and understood pretty much interchangeably - she's been called a bitch incessantly primarily because of her aloof image (because the one accusation they level against her could also be applied to Sulli who doesn't receive the same abuse). Unlike many male stars who have aloof images, there seems to be more of an unwillingness to see past the surface with Krystal and understood the dorky/funny side of her personality than there would be with many male actors/idols. Just something I've noticed and used your comment as an opportunity to address. :-/

but dude, i'm still not digging a high school premise for LEE MINHO. in the back of my mind, i'm still going, da frig is lee minho doing in this drama? dude just DOES NOT look high school AT ALL. he never has! everyone else still kinda passes. well, not choi jinhyuk, of course. ha.

i actually have never found myself digging any of kim eunsook's work, so i'll be tuning in for kim woobin. hopefully the drama is good.

Yeah, I wonder why Lee Min Ho is going to be a high school student again, especially in a drama with the settings that sound very similar to BOF in which he starred 4 years ago. I thought he had decided to focus on adult characters a long time before.

Seeing Kim Woobin on the small screen as a high school student again this year wasn't expected to me either. His previous student roles were very good (I fell in love with Park Heungsoo from School 2013, he was beyond awesome <3), then he was cast to play a 28-year-old gangster in the highly-anticipated movie Friend 2, I seriously thought he wouldn't wear the school uniform again, let alone this early. Oh well, I'm still really happy to watch him in a new drama as one of the leads, though I'm praying and praying and praying that his character wouldn't be stuck in a silly love triangle.

....I'd add Park Shin-hye to that list as well, her career has been all over the map in terms of the age of the characters she played but I'm surprised she chose this after portraying a decidedly adult character in FBND, I thought she was transitioning into older roles too after playing college-age characters (YAB, Heartstrings)

This is the best thing I've heard about the casting for heirs to date!! My interest in this show has just shot from fairly meh up to dizzying heights! >.<

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED him in School 2013, and would watch him again in ANYTHING, in a heartbeat! And now I CAN! Eeeee!!! ♥

the thing is if I see LMH in school uniform again, the song "almost paradise" automatically plays in my brain -- horror! If KimEunSok writer-nim drives me up the wall again - it'll be a fatal blow :(

buuut I can't bear to not see KimWooBin & ChoiJinHyuk .. sigh guess I hav to risk my brain cells for the pretty ... nothing is free in tis world ..

OMG.....my dtr totally loves this guy and I loved him in AGD and School 2013...he's got the look, the charm, the height and he's proven to be a great dramatic actor....

The male cast for this drama will be ridiculously tall. Lmh is around 185, and kwb is even taller.

The concept of the drama is a bit eyeroll worthy though. I hated the original gossip girl and I definitely do not need a Korean version. There's only so much rich teenager problems I can sit through
(and seriously does lmh have nothing better offered to him? He already did this type of drama with bof)

EPIC! I just hope it's not Krystal. If their getting an Idol, might as well go for Jung Eunji. At least she's a fit (somehow).

As a huge fan of Eunji, I don't think she's a good fit for the role (if it's the what that I think it will be). I see it as a Blair-type 2nd lead role, all bitchy and catty and aloof and rich...which is why I see them wanting Krystal for it.

Eunji's a great idol actress but I just can't see her pulling off rich bitch (I love her but...average looks)...if it's the sympathetic friend type 2nd lead though, then cast her cast her!

YAY! YES! YAHOO! Now, my anticipation for this drama has exploded times a gazillion. Oh, man, this is gonna make it hard to root for Lee Min-ho's character. Unless Kim Woo-bin plays an assy character. But, hopefully not. I can see him as the Chuck Bass of this show. And Chuck was my favorite character on Gossip Girl! So totally can't wait for October!

I'm not too sure about Krystal though. She's a great singer, and I love f(x)'s music, but she has a long way to go before becoming as great an actress as Park Shin-hye.

I really hope Choi Jin-hyuk joins the cast, too.

My sentiments exactly, kdrama pairings get repeated so rarely and I don't actually have any hope that Woobie will pull a Yonghwa and then get to star in a drama with PSH as the actual lead and not the second lead :/

(also I've seen her and Lee Min-ho's CF for Etude House, and the chemistry was decidedly meh. And for those who say she doesn't have chemistry with anyone/you can't tell from a CF, the CF series she did for the same brand with Jang Geun-seok, even before You're Beautiful, were positively crackling)

I hope WB doesn't get paired with PSH. She's so sexless. But then, this is a high school drama so there won't really be any sparks flying, anyway. We will get a chaste kiss somewhere along the line, probably with the heroine's eyes wide open in shock and surprise. OMO! I just got kissed! Does he really like me?
WB is still in this zone, and PSH seems perpetually stuck there, but I still can't believe LMH is going back to high school.

I wouldn't call her sexless, no more so than most kdrama heroines, anyway - she has chemistry with most of her leading men in that I actually feel interested in seeing their characters interact/they don't bore me, even if I know the kiss scene will be killed by kdrama convention (and FBND avoided that with its final kiss).

But her and Lee Min-ho...... are not among those pairings. It's not like he always has the greatest chemistry with his leading ladies either (there is a reason why about 75% of the fanfic in the Boys Before Flowers category is about two tertiary characters - Kim Bum and Sim So-eun had chemistry that the leads just couldn't muster)

It's not just her mouth. Her whole body is stiff or at least still. I mean, she actually lifted her hand once and it was seen as a major step forward. The guys always have to do all the heavy lifting.
Her expression is pleasant and neutral. She can portray interest, she can show that she likes or admires a person, but it is as if the body is not involved, at all. And I am trying to remember a show (I am not counting CFs, they have different rules) where she wasn't modestly and conservatively dressed.
She is pleasant and comfortable and she cries nicely, but I never get any deeper and darker emotions from her. Maybe she is too young yet, maybe she is still wrapped in cotton wool and hasn't had to experience them for herself, maybe she's cannily staying in the space that makes people happy, the space where the viewers want a nice young girl to be. I mean, can you imagine PSH getting drunk, jumping a guy in an elevator, plotting revenge? I sure can't.
And that's nice, it's a good space to be in, I wish there were at least one American actress who was like that; but it doesn't make her the next Sarah Bernhardt and it doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see her move on and expand her range.

I used to feel that way about Yoon Eun-hye, and then I watched I Miss You, where she's a bitter, angry mess through the first half of her performance. I do like it when someone surprises me in a good way, and I feel like PSH has been holding out on us for her image - I suspect she will get there in time, too.
