Three Days aims to be Korean "24"

Ah, it’s refreshing to hear word of a NEW new drama (as in, one not mentioned before), given the new-drama-promotion glut that we’re dealing with these days. Preparations are still in preliminary stages for this new series, but we’ve got a name and producers and a bit of a plot to pique our interest: It’s titled Three Days, comes to us from the PD of Tree With Deep Roots (Shin Kyung-soo) and the writer of Ghost and Sign (Kim Eun-hee), and like those dramas will be up for a slot on SBS’s lineup.

Notably, Three Days is modeling itself after American TV show 24, which is a statement I don’t quite understand and the press releases don’t explain. The time format must be part of the comparison, but it’s not obvious exactly how they’re alike; 24 mimicked a “real time” format with each episode ticking down one hour, so that one full season chronicled our hero’s Worst Day Ever from start to finish. This drama is looking at a 20-episode run and will cover a three-day span, so it won’t quite fit the real time structure. Although I think it’s probably a safe guess that these’ll likely become our hero’s Worst Three Days Ever.

Another similarity with the American show: Three Days involves a presidential plot, unfolding around an emergency that arises at the president’s villa and featuring Blue House bodyguards as main characters. Thankfully they won’t be emulating the immediacy of its plotline in production; the show plans to pre-produce half the entire series. I am a fan of this idea. Fully pre-filmed dramas tend to flop in the marketplace, but a little extra buffer time in the production process can’t be a bad thing.

Three Days is aiming to score a Wednesday-Thursday timeslot in the fall; September is the earliest potential date, though the window extends till December. Who knows if it’ll be any good, but right now it’s got a dash of freshness that’s music to my ears.

Tree With Deep Roots PD? Yes!! I'm all over this, the drama was AMAZING. Three Days!?!?!?!? I'm ready to see the our hero's take this challenge. Now I'm wondering who they have in mind for the Leads. Hope it's a powerful actor/actress that takes this one on.

Tree With Deep Roots was an amazing brilliant show due to it's writer Kim Young Hyun and PD Jang Tae Yoo. Shin Kyung-soo was a total rookie and probably the assistant PD because he is not mentioned anywhere in the credits. Tree was his first project. The best director award of that year went to PD Jang Tae Yoo and best screen-play went to Kim Young Hyun and I have to say they both deserved it.
I was getting excited because I thought at least one of them would be attached to this project but I guess not :(.

Awwwwwww man! And here i thought he was the genius behind that masterpiece! Of a drama. And YES! Han Suk Kyu was spectacular in his role. It was my first time watching him and i must hand it to him, he did an outstanding job. As for Joong Ki i must say this was the role that opened my eyes to see what an amazing actor he's becoming. Still can't forget the scene between him and his father. It was powerful.

That was Joong-ki's break out role for me. He was on fire and I was worried about the adult actor but Han stepped in and took it to another level. Best transition from young to adult I've ever seen in a drama.

And ditto.

haha, this is good information. I mean, it's great he has something like Tree with Deep Roots on his resume, but it sure can be misleading...
I hope he learned alot from that drama and is willing to give the same quality of a show to us as Tree was!!!

Bodyguards? I always like bodyguards (woodalchis and so on). Will check it out. But I have completely lost track of all the upcoming dramas - hopefully, the DB website and community will tell me which ones are good and which ones are not!

Woohoo for the Woodalchi! Can we have a show just about THEM?

This sounds like a totally new concept indeed...no live filming and mad rush? no tiring schedules for the stars? Han Ye Seul should sign up!!! haha....

And no melos, no betrayal-revenge, no deception-punishment, no rich-and-handsome-but-imbecile scion meeting poor-and-ugly-but-hard-working girl, etc?

I want Lee Min-ho or Song Joong-ki to take this. I want my biases on screen asap. They are taking SO MUCH time picking their next project.

I think Song Joong Ki is going to the army this summer - if this is the case, I doubt he'll have time to do anything before then.

idk why Korea insists on imitating american programming but wants to be original all at the same damn time -___-

Good luck finding any plot or device to be entirely original hell the real time format has been around in movies since the 40's. If you want to get down to brass tacks 24 ripped off MASH, sadly the old adage nothing is truly original is very apt here.

If there's a tv series anyone in any country has ever produced, Kiefer Sutherlands' Jack Bauer in 24 is always on top of my list, any list in fact.

Its sweet that they have Three Days use 24 as a model. Since I haven't seen Three Days yet I've no additional comment.

I wish them luck though. I might cringe over a lot of "inspired by..." movies and tv series that's all over TV land (not only in Korea, I'm sure) but heck, who knows? This one might be good.

Sounds interesting, though I've never watched 24, and don't quite get the concept. But this should be interesting.

"Presidential plot, unfolding around an emergency that arises at the president’s villa and featuring Blue House bodyguards as main characters."

Hmmmm... This sounds very suspiciously like the same storyline of the Yoo Jung-sang / Oh Man-seok / Ji Chang-wook musical "The Days" that premieres on 4 April. If that ends up being true, I will attach a big I CALL NO WAY to this production!!!

Think the writer is married to the guy who wrote King of Drama, Sign and Harvest Villa (or at least co-wrote the latter two along with the wife). I LOVE all these 3 shows and the writings in them - I actually google'ed the husband writer to catch up on his work and I have been a huge fan so far.

Just hoping that the wife writer had her influence in those writings and/or will be influenced by her husband's style in this one. The format is definitely refreshing as JB says. I will definitely check it out.

I know right? KoD showcases the combination of great writing, great directing, great acting, great music, great pacing and all the other greats I can't think of right now..

Have to agree the last 2 episodes were weaker than the rest but **SPOILER ALERT** I was not bothered by the blindness or the "third-rate producer" parts, just felt it was rushed and tried a bit too hard to lower itself to the level of the perceived audience (e.g. the flashback to the cyclist and the demise of the former Empire producer etc.) .. But still, that kind of overall quality was hard to come by. Really really really loved it!

SPOILER!! the blindness and third-rate producer really wasn't my problem. What really got to me was that it went into k-drama perdictible mode starting episode 17. I could tell what was going to happened. It didn't leave me wondering or on my toes like the first 16 episode (and rightfully so, it was a drama that was supposed to have only 16 episodes, and even the writer interject the effects of extending a drama that already planned what episode it would end.) Now I'm here wondering what would this drama been like had they not gone for the extention.

For those of you who haven't watched '24' I would highly suggest you do. '24' is amazingly good. So good that I no longer call Kiefer Sutherland (the main actor in 24) Kiefer Sutherland he will always and forever be 'Jack Bauer’ (character name) to me.

I would like it to be 16 episodes for a three-day time frame, instead of 20 episodes b/c anything above that number just seems so long and unnecessary. And it would be nice to have a bad-ass female lead. Wishful thinking.

Also, I hope there's no love line for the first time in the history of Korean dramas (slightly exaggerated) :P

lol, in a show that takes place in only three days I don't think they will have a chance to put a full blown romance in, maybe hinted romance.

Good point! I don't mind sex though :-) - think K-drama has been shying away from that but has improved a lot lately..

Sounds great. I am getting bored with Kdramas nowadays because not matter how interesting the story lines, many turned cliche toward the end. And production quality goes down the drain as well.

With this pre-produced concept, let's hope some of the better actors will come back to drama land. And yay for less tired looking actors onscreen. As much as I enjoy ogling all the pretty, my heart inevitably end up squeezing uncomfortably when seeing them puffy I-am-so-tired-I-could-die eyes.
