The action begins on Gu Family Book

Wonder twins, activate! Yay, here’s our first glimpse of action on the new fantasy fusion sageuk Gu Family Book, starring Lee Seung-gi as a half-gumiho, half-puppy, and Suzy as the bow-and-arrow-wielding heroine that he’ll fall in love with. Right now they look more like partners in crime, which hey, would be a nice change of pace. I don’t expect the drama not to have any damsels in distress, but it already gets points for making our heroine a fighter. I’m so excited for something actiony right now — the more high-flying fun the better. Please be badass. Please be badass.

Seung-gi seems to be having a lot of fun knockin’ some heads together and showing off his gumiho strength. I hope they really go to town with the supernatural element and give him some powers too. It’s no fun when they skimp on the super for a superhero. The rest of the stills are from the teaser, with only tiny glimpses of our two leads. It’s mostly just an intro to our half-gumiho hero Choi Kang-chi — from human mother Lee Yeon-hee and gumiho father Choi Jin-hyuk.

The title Gu Family Book is a reference to a gumiho legend (in this storyverse) about a centuries-old book that’s rumored to contain the secret to becoming human. No one’s seen the book, and there’s no telling whether it exists or is just a gumiho bedtime story passed down through the generations. Kang-chi wants more than anything to become human, and so the story will be his journey to chase down this legend.

Suzy plays Dam Yeo-wool, daughter of a martial arts teacher (played by Jo Sung-ha), who learned to fight and is particularly skilled with a bow and arrow. Yoo Yeon-seok (pictured below) will be Kang-chi’s rival — he’s the son of the man who takes Kang-chi in as an orphan (which also makes him Lee Yubi’s oppa), and he’ll be the cold cynical scholar who challenges Kang-chi for the heroine’s affections.

So far it seems like the world will have a strong mythology and lots of action, so I’ve got my fingers crossed that it delivers. Gu Family Book premieres April 8 on MBC.

You're right! Although I loved his dramatic turn in K2H, this just looks like so much FUN - and it's been awhile since we've really had a funny, kickass drama to fangirl over - really looking forward to 'The GU's'!

If I'm not wrong, according to the synopsis, his father will be lured to the 'dark side' and Kang Chi would be up against him quite a bit. So we'll be seeing quite a fair bit of him.

I'm in love with the stylist here! LSG hair looks awesome and his costume is spot on. For some reason, sageuk costumes either go in the direction of being either really bright or really dull. But this is one of the better ones I've seen. The colors, the proportions, the attention to detail!

Although I did notice that LSG's costume is more fabulous than everyone else's...either I'm just bring biased or the stylist is....hmmm.....

YES, this looks so promising! After the disappointment that is Level 7 (no need to further dwell on that), I need a new drama with a compelling story that makes sense in its own universe and gets me totally hooked! I really miss watching a drama with a forwarding plot, that totally draws me in (like Gaksital or The Princess´ man) and whose protagonists act so persuasively, that I feel utterly lost in my own surroundings when I´m not glued to the screen anymore....
Is it to much to ask from the drama gods???

Just because you don't see him as an action hero, doesn't mean that others don't!!!
When I first saw LSG, it was in 1n2d, and I couldn't envisage him as an actor. But I can now, after seeing him act!

Really, the ppl who don't see Shia LeBoeuf as an action hero, shouldn't watch his 'action' movies... unless they want to give him a chance to prove their perceptions wrong. But if after watching these so called action shows, and they still hold the same opinion, then they should just stop watching his action movies!!! Likewise, the same advice goes to you and your opinion of Seunggi. Why waste your time watching the drama and even bothering to comment negatively, and picking fights with ppl???This is not the first time. Don't you have better things to do with your time? Or do you just want to seek attention???

Sometimes people have to suffer through performances by actors they think aren't great when the drama happens to also star someone they DO like (because like it or not, dramas/movies are a team effort), so I suggest some people around these parts grow up and stop behaving like Twihards.

Some people don't understand what they read. You wrote YOU couldn't see LSG as an action hero, not that you forbid anyone from doing so. As far as I remember the rule of Beanuts Gallery is to "rant or rave", so anyone can express their opinion, as long as it isn't offensive or disrespectful. Criticizing is a common practice here, too.
So what would be some people's problem?

I am with you about LSG - a puppy with dimples in his cheeks is not the first image that comes to one's mind when thinking about action hero. It doesn't insult him as a person or actor - it is just an opinion, everybody can have one, even if it doesn't mean worshhipping LSG (or whomever). And even a viewer who isn't a LSG fan can be interested in the story.

An important trait for any good actor is the ability to transform and portray the role well. It has nothing to do with their real personality or looks. Every new role is like a challenge for them to play it convincingly so that the audience forget the actor behind the that particular character.
I have faith in LSG's ability to do this challenging role well based on what I know. He actually has been training himself for this role by taking lessons in an action school, loosing weight to give a fitter look(not that he needed to) etc. he is a perfectionist and has constantly improved with each outing as an actor. I have a feeling he may yet surprise everyone with how good he can be in this new role ......even those who believe in his abilities.

Couple hair? LOL cute~ This drama keep casting the people i like. Park Joo-hyung is the new addition. It's been a while i felt super excited for a drama. I hope it packs with real action especially from the leading lady. I love badass heroine. I can't wait to see official stills of the other casts especially Sung Joon and Lee Yubi. The trailer is awesome. First impression is really good but PD-nim and Writer-nim,please be good until the end,ok?

Thanks GF for the update.

I'm being cautious about this. I'd rather have low expectations and be pleasantly surprised rather than the other way around.

However I do have hope that the drama will be easier to believe as a period piece compared to one with contemporary battles. The disappointment in that pitiful battle on the island in K2H still lingers.

I'm a bit excited for this, but I was underwhelmed with the trailer. I don't know, it looked fantastic but there was just something missing. Also, Suzy with a sword was a bit awkward, but they were just small clips sooo I can't quite say whether or not she's bad or bad asssss yet! I'm hoping she'll be able to deliver, and Seung gi as well!

Suzy looked really awkward with sword ,that`s what bothered me the most! She looks like pretty princess that is holding sword for a first time! Also i don`t think anybody wore hair like that in Joseon time! Her hair looks very modern!
That said she looks super pretty but hope her acting improved! And i hope her and Seunggi have chemistry!

oh wow, lee yeon hee looks incredibly beautiful in these stills. It's such a pity that even after she's had so many projects to hone her skills, her acting's not quite there. If she can prove herself to be more of a veritable actress, she could definitely go so much further...
