Jung Yumi joins Jung Kyeo-woon in Wonderful Mama
by girlfriday
Confirmations are in for Jung Kyeo-woon’s new weekend drama Wonderful Mama, and now he has a co-star in Rooftop Prince’s Jung Yumi, who has finally made it out of backstabby second lead territory. She was originally due to star in City Conquest first, but that drama seems dead in the water, at least for now.
Wonderful Mama is about a loan shark mom (Bae Jong-ok), a self-made woman who went from working a tiny market stand to owning multi-million-won buildings. She gets diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s, and has to hurry and make her three adult kids grow up before she forgets how to mother them. It’s described as a refreshing and heartwarming family story.
Jung Yumi will play Mom’s eldest daughter, Go Young-chae, a designer and uppity princess who has a short temper and a quick tongue. But she’ll eventually mature and become a warm, optimistic young woman with lots of affection. She meets Jung Kyeo-woon’s character at work when she starts a new job, and they’ll have a contentious workplace romance.
Jung Kyeo-woon will play Jang Hoon-nam (Ha, his name hoon-nam actually means nice guy.), the second son of a family that’s owned a clothing material factory for three generations. He lost his parents at a young age, and grew up taking care of his hearing-impaired older brother. They’re inseparable, and he sounds like the nicest kid brother ever. He’s strict and professional at work, but he’s got a strong sense of responsibility and he starts out trying to get Young-chae to stop being a gold-digging princess, and will eventually fall in love with her. Sounds like lots of potential for cute romance and heartwarming family drama.
The show will be produced by PD Yoon Ryu-hae (I Love You), and writer Park Hyun-joo (Hooray for Love). Wonderful Mama follows My Love Madame Butterfly and premieres in May on SBS.

but not how she was written in Rooftop. I am seriously going to blame the writing for that one...it was good comedically but in the middle it had like amnesia or something. It was confused whether it was a rom com or a melo or a makjang and then suddenly the makjang elements disappeared and woah, what a poop.

People think that the politically correct term is "hearing impaired", but the mass majority of people in the Deaf community prefer the word "deaf". Even if the brother can hear a little bit (with technology these days, many deaf people can) he probably still would prefer to be called deaf. "Hearing impaired" is even slightly offensive, as far as I know. I'm no expert, but this is what I've experienced first-hand by interacting with the Deaf community in my town.

I seem to be in a minority, but Jung Yumi + princess + designer doesn't exactly thrill me. I stay neutral about this. Though, I would love this drama to turn out good. And the characters human rather than wooden or even cardboard. I mean adorable JGW is ideed lovely to look at, but I wish for him to show some personality.

I'm glad that she's finally made the move up to leading lady. I wonder who the younger sisters will be played by - I suspect one of them will fall in love with the deaf older brother of the male lead.

This sounds like a good week-end drama. I usually don't watch these but it looks like it'll be skimping on the makjang so I'll watch. Love Kyeo-woon and Yumi too so another reason to try it out.
I'll be keeping an eye on this!

Isn't it sad when you hate an actors' character in their previous drama and that carries over to their new projects? I ended up disliking so much JKW's character in Salaryman and JY's character in Rooftop didn't endear me to her at all either (not that I loved the leads in that drama, they were all so meh). I think Wang Ji-hye was the only villain that I hated (Personal Taste) but came to love when she starred in PTB.

interested in this now! i really like her—she's so sweet and bubbly without being annoying, at least for me. i hope the story will be well written, more along the lines of unexpected you, and not makjang like madame butterfly and so many others.
