Song Joong-ki and Moon Chae-won consider new melodrama
by girlfriday
It looks like we’re going to see Song Joong-ki (Tree With Deep Roots) back in dramaland sooner rather than later, and possibly with Moon Chae-won (The Princess’s Man) as his heroine. The melodrama Nice Guy is the new project from writer Lee Kyung-hee, of Will it Snow for Christmas, I’m Sorry, I Love You, A Love to Kill, and Thank You, among many others.
It seems like Song Joong-ki is a lock for the project, since he does have a longstanding relationship with the writer since Will it Snow, and has been reportedly prepping his schedule for the production. Moon Chae-won is “considering the role among others,” so we’ll see how it plays out.
The story is a straight-up melo, and it sounds like heavy stuff: the hero gets betrayed by his girlfriend, and so in order to get back at her, he uses an amnesiac woman for his revenge scheme. Well that sounds like a GREAT idea. Is there no one in his life to scream, “Mistaaaaaake”? The drama’s title in Korean is a homophone for “nice guy,” but spelled wrong on purpose, like the slangy version of the word. It’s intentional, though I don’t know if it’s actually meant to change the meaning, since this guy is not a nice guy, by any stretch of the imagination.
The production is early in the development stage, so it has yet to find a PD and a broadcaster, but plans to air sometime in August.

Hmm, as far as I know "Nice Guy", is a specific term for someone who acts all nice and correct and thinks very highly of himself, but is actucally an asshole. I don´t know if that applies here or not.

I just can't see them together though. Is MCW confirmed on this?

I've been flailing about this since last night. I don't care how weepy/angsty/makjang this turns out, I get to stare at SJK for hours and hours and that's fine by me.
Happy that he's the lead. Boy genuinely deserves a good, meaty lead role.

After "Tree" he deserves a lead role. And MCW... after seeing her in Brilliant Legacy, I believe she can bring on the drama. I'm excited for this pairing.

Well, he was in the lead role in Many a Little Romance (2011 film) with Han Ye Seul.
But yeah his lead in a TV drama is way delayed! He shines in every show he does so far.
Btw the other day when I was watching KBS2, he appeared in 3 different CMs over a period of 5 minutes! Ha that's saying something right? Yippie, more of SJK!

I really hope he accepts this role because he has improved so much over the years and now finally he has a main role where he can truly shine. I always liked him but thought that people often overlook him as just a pretty boy when he actually is a great actor with presence and a likable quality.

I love SJK. I love MCW. But I'm scarred forever after the horror that was A Love to Kill. And this drama sounds like its right up this alley of 'over the top melo'.
I don't think I'll be tuning in for this. -_-'

I was literally squealing and Screaming BEST THING EVER! when I read the header....and of the most part it still amy be (especially since this might have MOON CHAE WON too!!!) is but after reading the synopsis Idk how I feel about it anymore.... this is the writer who wrote WISFC which was wonderful for 3/4th of ts run and then tanked really bad at the end (for me at least)...she also wrote I'm Sorry I love You, Sangdoo Lets go to School and A Love To Kill....so I guess at least one death at the end is to be expected

Of course I want to see SJK in an entire drama.
Of course I want to see MCW, too.
I think I understand how why they take these jobs - the melos garner good ratings, and roles like these help develop some serious acting skills. It's just that it hurts to see so much pretty hurting.
But for crying out loud, can I go through the pain of WISFC again? And by that I mean I will be crying out loud again. Even Go Soo said it hurt to film it.
MCW - Isn't time for a silly, frilly romcom with slapstick and funtimes? TPM was too much of a weepfest for me to finish. She was all badass in The Arrow. I would like to see more of that.

Why does it have to be a melodrama? I can watch stuff like TK2H (which is my current favorite) but will not touch a straight melo even if it has great actors in it. And I so wanted to see both SJK & MCW in a new drama...
On the other hand, there's too much good ongoing & upcoming dramas so who has the time to watch everything? I'll take Faith come August even if I don't like LMH's leading lady. ;)

I can actually see Song in this role. I figure that the guy will have alot of emotional scenes and I think Song will do that well, the whole "Hey, I'm a good guy look at me smile. But I'm all cracked up inside."
I hope Moon joins him..simply coz that will make the drama THAT much prettier. Hehe=)

Honestly I'm curious and excited about this. I'll wonder how he'll cope with a role like this one, and this actress is decent so that might end up in a great pairing. Will it be a success? What kind of style will the director have for this? I can't wait to witness his first leading role. I hope that, as an actor, it will be a good experience for him and for his career.
I'm not really afraid about the plot. ALTK was good for a good part, although ridiculous at the end. Ok, I admit Rain's charisma is one of the reason it was good for half the drama.

I wonder if she will call him grandpa. (Sejong, and Suyang's daughter). They did wonderful work in their most recent dramas!
If the story is written more like "Thank You" and not like any of the others it may be watchable. I do not particularly like the way this writer portrays women. Please, please make her smart, independent, and able to talk about her feelings.
I agree with many of the sentiments here regarding the "horror" aspect of some of the previous stories written by this writer. WHY?? -- DO WE PUT UP WITH THIS??

They wrapped up filming about two weeks ago (began in Dec), which is when rumors of SJK and MCW being cast together in a drama started to surface. The shooting for the film itself was pretty secretive, but now that it's in post-production, I'm assuming they're looking at a release towards the end of the year. Much of it was filmed in the winter in the countryside, and that would fit better mood-wise.

For a second I was weirded out by the paring due to "age difference" until I looked up their years...He's an 85er and she's an 86er so he's actually older by a year. Am I the only one who thinks that she looks more mature (and older) and him younger?

A heavy melo finally! I just love the depressing atmosphere in "Im sorry I love you" and "Will it Snow at Christmas" and I hope this drama would go for that same mood. I have faith in Song Joong Ki and Moon Chae Won!
Also, I can't wait for the angsty soundtracks and music for this show. This writer gets involved with the musical score for his dramas and boy he cooks it up really deliciously. This music is one of the best angsty background music in K-drama history: http://www.muziboo.com/rjyuggy/music/love-pendant/

Yeah~~~~ Song Joong Ki!! I'm so so happy to know he's going to lead in a drama. And a melo!! Double YEAH!
Can't remember when it was that I realised he should be able to do a 'bad' guy role. Saw those eyes and it told me our sweetie can do a meanie! He is the one actor who has the sweetest look and yet can really act. Ah, reminds me so much of Kim Jaewon and it's not just their smile!
I'm not crazy about Moon Chae Won but that won't stop me from watching SJK in a melo! I need to see him pine for love! Just hoping the overall production is good!
