Lee Seon-kyun returns with new drama

So, good news / bad news. The good news: The Voice returns to dramaland! Wheeeeeeee! The bad news: It’s YET ANOTHER medical drama. Whaaaaaaa? So not only do we have Song Seung-heon and Kim Seung-woo each in their own medical dramas due out this spring, but now Lee Seon-kyun is joining them too? Are the tv doctors having some sort of pissing contest with the tv time-traveling princes?

The new MBC drama is called Golden Time which doesn’t strike me as a very doctory title in the least. Sounds like a retirement community where they play a lot of pinochle. It’ll be a reunion with PD Kwon Seok-jang who directed Lee’s last drama, Pasta. The drama takes place in a surgical ward at a general hospital, and Lee Seon-kyun will be playing a top-notch surgeon with a cold demeanor. GUH. If there’s one mold television refuses to break, it’s that damn tv doctor one. We’ll call this one: McVelvet.

Adding to the uphill battle, Lee Seon-kyun has some pretty hefty tv doctor shoes to fill… HIS OWN, because he starred in 2007’s White Tower, which is considered by most as the med-drama gold standard (though it might have been surpassed by the more recent Brain). But the funny thing is, with the Pasta PD, I’m picturing more of a bossy shouty Chep in a white coat. Er, the other white coat, screaming “AGAIN!” wielding scalpel instead of chef’s knife. But let’s be real… I’d watch Lee Seon-kyun recite the alphabet, so…

Golden Time will premiere in late May or early June on MBC, following Light and Shadow.

Whhoooo! Welcome back, Lee Seon Kyun ~ That's great for him to be back to the K-Dramaland, of course :) ;)

Hahaha! Can't help laughing at the genre. Seriously? Again? How many times do I have to say that this year? :)

*facepalm* Kdramas, meet bandwagon. I have to think that it's terrible business strategy for the networks - I mean, deluging viewers with five different medical dramas at the same time does not make sense. Who's in charge here?

Hey, Bandwagon, don't leave without shaking Kdramas' hand! (Okay, that was a pretty terrible attempt at being funny right there. But I'm getting there.) WOW, another one? If these all air at around the same time, am I gonna switch through every channel just to find doctors wielding the same scalpel? Oh well. It is Lee Seon-kyun. I'll probably watch it, just for the sake of Mr. Voice. :) (But really. At least some more rom-com, as long as it's not that crappy, would make me happier than yet another cold and precise doctor who eventually grows a heart. With the help of a girl. And marry. And have kids or something. The only thing I'm trying to watch that's medical is Late Night Hospital, just 'cause there's only ten episodes and the surgeon's a boxer. Hee.)

Wow, the doctors I know in the hospital are old+bald+married.

But then, if they were like Song SeungHoon and Lee SeonKyung, hospitals couldn't handle the lovesick patients.

So an ambiance-heavy medical drama (like Pasta) with Lee Seon-kyun playing a cold professional? Sounds like a working idea, really.

We've had several fun off-beat doctors (like the cuddly Pil-Joo line) so I'm hoping Seon-Kyun brings his A-game. Which is being seemingly intimidating and cold but actually a little off-beat under the prickles.

McVelvet pretty much sums it all up though!

I didn't like Pasta and couldn't get into White Tower, so I'll probably pass on this one.

I am not gonna lie. When I saw his picture and read the title I gasped so hard I actually CHOKED.

I might have died if I didn't get it together at "medical drama" hahahaha!

So excited, I don't watch a lot of medical dramas (only OBGYN,Brain, and God's Quiz (which is medical crime investigation) so I'm still OK with them.

"Golden Time" might refer to the "Golden Hour", the medical term used for the period of time when it's critical for a patient to get care; the idea is, the faster the patient gets medical intervention, the higher the chance of survival.

I'll watch this only because of The Voice. Hopefully it'll be good enough that I'll stay for other reasons, too. Still, I'm with you...I'm going to be yelling, "Yes, chep!" whenever he gives an order to an intern.

Why oh why can't drama writers come up with a new idea instead of just flogging a dead horse. Surely there are more new and different professions in the world to base a character on, how about a drama based on the conflicts of paleontologists or the perils of restaurants inspectors, I dunno, something new and innovative. On a side note, I love you Mr. Voice for coming back to dramaland because I've been missing your husky and dulcet tones.

But FFS, drama scene, pull it together. I want choices in what's on air.

So docs are the name of the game nowdays Seoul way. No sweat. God knows if this is going to be good, mediocre or bad, the one thing for certain is the amount of glee I get reading about all this bric a brac dramawise in this page. All the pens that pan out here are absolute must reads, agree or not with their point of view (there have been a couple of things I've said "they liked that?" And some others I found myself coming out with "but I found it awesome!"

No drama can touch or has ever come close to White Tower's standard. Brain was decent because of Shin Ha Kyun's mindblowing performance, but White Tower? It's an unreachable threshold.

As for this... I'll check it out just for The Voice. But seriously, what's with all these medical dramas these days? o_0 I'm watching jTBC's Syndrome right now, and it's uhhhh... crap!

Hahaha!! love the McVelvet. Can't kdrama PD's and writer come up with a quirky fun loving doctor? His flaw would be that he is too trusting and he gets too involved with his patients... but then again where would the drama be in that.

Better yet -- I wish he'd be like House.
