The Rooftop posse assembles for a test shoot

Here’s a look at the men of the upcoming fantasy-sageuk-time-traveler drama Rooftop Prince. Yoochun stars as the Joseon-era crown prince and should, in my opinion, always be in sageuks; he just looks so much better in my eyes in that dignified sageuk-wear. Either that or he could just adopt hanbok as his everyday dress, though really, it might just be easier to keep acting in costume dramas.

In the drama, Princey makes the 300-year quantum leap with his entourage, which consists of Lee Min-ho (The Moon That Embraces the Sun), Jung Seok-won (Ojakkyo Brothers), and Choi Woo-shik (Tree With Deep Roots). I’m bracing myself for the inevitable moniker F4, which will undoubtedly be slapped onto this quartet, even though it’s a term that really needs to take a hiatus from popular usage. I guess it’s convenient, though; you won’t find shorter shorthand around to describe a foursome of pretty, pretty young men.

About the prince’s posse: Lee Min-ho’s character is a prickly sort — you know, uptight and difficult to please — and also a genius. “Pure macho” swordsman Jung Seok-won is always on his guard and ready to protect the prince. And eunuch Choi Woo-shik happens to be “the original vegetarian,” which I hope gets used for comic effect.

Aside from the fact that this prince is considered handsome, I’m feeling a lot more Vampire Idol with this bunch than F4 — and that’s a great thing, because the vampire idol boys are hilarious. And adorable. They’re also fish out of water, just from the other end of the time-space continuum where they’re used to things being a lot more high-tech and easy than contemporary life in Korea.

The drama recently held its first script reading at SBS’s Ilsan Production Center on the afternoon of February 1, where they also held a camera test with our series leads. That also included our second leads, pictured below in modern-day-wear as characters the crown prince meets when warping to the future. Er, the present. Lee Tae-sung (Playful Kiss) plays a charming playboy, while Jung Yumi (Thousand Day Promise) will fall into a love triangle with the prince and his princess-lookalike, played by Han Ji-min. Han was conspicuously absent from the photos, but she’s probably busy still shooting Padam Padam, which is winding up for its finale week.

Rooftop Prince will premiere on Wednesday, March 14.

+1... actually, +2. My mom says he's a lot more handsome in Joseon-era clothing with his hair pulled back and out of the equation. (Is it just me, or is the poor guy incapable of finding a haircut that suits him?)

I totally agree too, he looks better in the hanbok. While watching SKKS, I heard he was an idol....and that surprised me. He looks so un-idoly; I actually love that.

Thanks :D To be fair, his hair in that "modern" pic above looks much better than a lot of the hairstyles I've seen him sporting, but I think his head seems to be too round so a lot of styles sit awkwardly on it. Or something.

I also like that he doesn't look like an idol. I know that certain styles are fashionable right now, but I'm not a huge fan of the way a lot of the idols these days look. (I'm not well-versed in K-pop, so I'm not saying the older groups look better or whatever - this is just a matter of personal taste. Lee Min-ho reference intended!)

LOL, totally not just you. The amount of WTF hairstyles he's had in the past when he's actually a perfectly good-looking guy... O_o And I agree, he looks *so* much better in Joseon-era clothing. Gaah, can't wait to watch this drama (even if it's just for the pretty ^o^)!

This is my *most anticipatecd* drama of the spring. woot.

Yoochun did a fine job in SKKS (after warming up a bit) and he's rather well known for being comfortable with making 'derp'faces ...so I think comdey will suit him well.

I find it interesting that, technically, LeeMinHo (Jr.) is his Sunbae in acting. I suspect there will be scene-stealing involved...heehee. ;)

Loved Han Ji Min in Yi San. Love everything Yoochun (is it me or is he aging like fine wine, he just keeps looking better as he gets older ;)

Have seen all the other guys in dramas before and I liked them. Plus it also helps that they are cute, fine, handsome etc, lol.

I love how that first photo has three of them looking serious, then that one guy off on the side has a slight grin. :) A group of guys can only have so many stone-faces.

I am cautiously excited for this. I like the leads and the premise sounds like it could be hilarious. I hope they can pull this off!

Choi Woo-shik was the child actor of Ga Ri On in Tree with Deep Roots. He has great comic timing so I'm excited he's getting more roles (loved him in the Duo and Ten). He reminds me of a younger Kwon Sang Woo (though they don't necessarily look alike).

Easy mistake since he is sadly under-utilized in TWDR. Plus, he looks nothing like the adult actor who plays Ga Ri On. The even younger kid version looked more like the adult actor but his acting was cringe-worthy (hopefully, he'll improve in future projects).

I'm so glad to be seeing Lee Tae Sung again, he was so sweet in Playful Kiss and I was afraid he would be a rookie actor who got swept away amongst all the incoming idol turned actors.

I can't wait for this drama, it may be my next addiction after The moon that embraces the sun and Shut up flower boy band :)

Agree with you about Yoochun! He should always stay in sageuk garb! And it helps that he sounds like he's got the sageuk speak down. There are just some people who look much better in historical clothing. I was just thinking the other day about chinese actor, Hu Ge. Modern clothing - he's meh. Give him historical costumes and I'm drooling.

I really love the shot of all four of them. The uncharacteristic smirk by the guy at the end just adds something special, The strongman looks string, Yoochun looks awesomely kingly and the genius looks like he takes his studies seriously. If they're already channeling their characters like thud, I'm expectintg something great from this drama.

Question: Is this what will be up against The King?

I really hope Yoochun's character will be a comedic one. Not in the sense that occasionally he's involved in a funny situation or a joke is played on him. I want him to be a full-out derpy not the sharpest crayon in the box kind of dork prince. He has the best expressions and it's time he used that talent in a drama!

I'm really excited for this drama, I love all the cast and it seems SBS want to do something BIG about this drama. I hope the scriptwriter do her/his job very well, because the cast are good. I smell comedy in this drama, really looking foward for march!

I would actually buy this drama without the time travelling I already love the cast in their saegeuk and that's more than enough for me to watch another saegeuk which I used to dislike.. it started with iljimae proceeded by chuno princess man sungkyunkwan scandal and the undisputable moon the embraces the sun!!!

It's nice to see Yoochun and Lee Min Ho together again in another sageuk like in SKKS. Although Min Ho's role was very limited in SKKS, he still did a great job of it. They actually both look better in Joseon garb.

Wooot! It's Yoochun! ! ! I'm still admiring him ALOT since I first saw him in his old group DBSK (but, he's currently in JYJ with Jae Joong and Xiah), of course. Also, he was doing so great job at his first-time drama SKKS & I will be looking foward to this drama.

Aha! I reaaally like Lee Tae Sung (since Time Between Dog and Wolf & Playful Wolf) He will become RISING like as 'popular' actor, keke ~ ;)

Hot 4 some.. and of course Yay for Yoochun as Prince!! It kinda reminds me of SKS again (4 really close students instead of an F4) but this time for riches and nobility instead of rags and students.. Its gonna be fun!

Sigh.. more dramas to watch on my neverending list this season.. but I can't wait! :)
