Fashion King starts filming with Yoo Ah-in
by javabeans
SBS’s upcoming drama Fashion King has begun shooting, and here are some cuts from the recent shoot. Could Yoo Ah-in be any cuter? I love his deer-in-headlights look here as he dangles from a third-story window, 10 meters above the ground.
The scene called for some wire action work, and went through approximately twenty takes of Yoo jumping from the building. Afterward, Yoo admitted, “I knew there would be a wire scene today, but I didn’t know I’d be the one jumping. It was a little scary, but it was fun shooting a drama again after such a long while.” (It’s been over a year since his last drama, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, wrapped in November 2010.)
The plot: Fashion King tells the story of young aspiring designers, their relationships, and their dreams of success. They’re based at the Dongdaemun Market (a packed Seoul hot spot known for selling cheap, trendy clothes, among other things) and presumably get entangled in multiple love triangles. On paper it’s just like Cinderella Man, but tonally I’m anticipating something different — less jokey and makjang than Cinderella‘s slapstick/birth secrets/fatal illness plot points.
This drama isn’t really on my must-see list, but I can’t dismiss it entirely with such charismatic actors onboard: namely, Yoo Ah-in and his co-star, film actor Lee Je-hoon (Bleak Night, The Front Line), both of whom are technically strong actors who also happen to have loads of screen presence.
Then again, two actors does not a successful drama make, and we’ve got tons of examples to prove that. I’m less interested in the rest of the cast, which includes Shin Se-kyung (Tree With Deep Roots), Jang Mi-hee (Life Is Beautiful), and SNSD member Yuri. I’ll be hoping the drama surprises me, but to be honest I’m not holding my breath.
The PD’s filmography includes fusion sageuk Ja Myung Go, while the writers’ resumés include dramas like tense melodrama What Happened in Bali, rom-com Sweet Spy, vampire sitcom Hello Franceska, and the quintessential Cinderella drama Star In My Heart (which was also set in the fashion designing world). Huh, that’s quite a spread.
Fashion King takes over the Monday-Tuesday timeslot from History of a Salaryman and premieres March 12.

Normally I would declare "ANYTHING YAI" but for some reason, the drama plot doesnt compell me. Maybe I just have a lot on my plate right now...
Side note: I've been hearing rave reviews for YAI's movie. Any recs? Do I need a box of tissues?

Wandeuki is definitely a charmer - and no, box of tissues not required (not really sad, but it is touching). It's what I'd classify as a "quiet, slice of life" type of movie. You meet interesting characters and spend some time with them. Yoo Ah-in still can play high school very convincingly!

Hahaha. Am I the only one who reads Dramabeans articles/posts and have come to the point where, without looking at the writer, can tell whether it's either jb or girlfriday who wrote it? I find jb just a tad bit more cynical/skeptical than girlfriday. I'm not saying girlfriday hasn't been skeptical/cynical herself, I just know that jb is more likely not to hold her breath. Hahaha. It's not a bad thing mind you. I just find it amusing. Maybe poor jb has been blogging a lot longer and has been disappointed more often than not with promising dramas that turn out to be total duds. XD
In any case, I am never a big fan of fashion dramas, but I think I still want to check in on the first episode and see if it's any good. Seriously, that hanging from the 3rd floor window looks funny enough for me to check in.

I actually find GF's writing style to be a lot snarkier in tones than JB's :P I love the snarks, mind you, so it's certainly not a bad thing. And yup, I can definitely tell the difference between the writing styles even without looking at the names of writers. Thanks for all the updates and goodies, gals!

Yeah, girlfriday does out snark jb at times. But I think girlfriday has shown to be a bit more forgiving towards a drama's flaws than jb. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone, but... You can just tell who is who just from their writing style and attitude. Heh.

I thought of a way to explain it:
girlfriday - scary growl/bark
jb - tough bite
Geez, now I might have offended them. *facepalm**headdesk*

And that's why the BEST posts here on DB is when they get together and do a combined recap or review or podcast or whatever.
They complete each other.

No, I understand. The writing "tone" is different too, as well as the word choices...

True girlfriday tends to be more snarkier and cynical than jb. Love them both though. I can almost hear them reading the article for me with each their way and sound, every single word adds the character of the sound. But that happen often in this texting era doesn't it? Like every tweet and status at your fb wall do make sound, telling who you are.

All the fashion dramas I've seen eg: Fashion 70's and Style were both complete flops. I agree, I'm not anticipating much from this. Nonetheless, Yoo Ah In keeps me very interested. ;D

He's a cutie, but that's all that's working for me.
'Baby-Faced Beauty' was about fashion. I thought that one was good. But to be honest, I was just there for Daniel Choi.

Yeah, I don't think I cared so much about the fashion in Baby Faced Beauty. I was there for the characters, you could've replaced the fashion with any dream/job, and I still would've been there for the characters. Heh.

I'm definitely going to watch this just for YAI alone. It feels like a looooooong time since he's been in television.
Anyway, my local television recently aired SKKS and its dubbed. I'd say its totally ruining the mood. I was screaming he was NOT saying that, almost the whole time.

oooh....I didn't know Jang Mi Hee would be in this...i adored her and Kim Sang Joong (evil daddy from City Hunter) together in LiB....now my anticiaption level is even higher.....as much as I love YAI, I kind of despise kdramas set in the fashion world, especially after the last two that I saw turned to be such duds....hopefully there are no birth secrets and vile secind leads here

Me not excited about the female cast too. I would have said anything with YAI in it, but with all the more exciting dramas coming up, I'd probably watch this on a slow season.
The only good thing about dramas with idols in it is that the subs are really fast. It's frustrating that the subs for Color of a Woman takes weeks, but Dream High 2 takes less than 24 hours. :(

For some reason, when I looked at the picture (w/o reading the title) on dramabeans homepage, I thought it was a pic of Lee Bum Soo from History of a Salaryman. Maybe their hairstyles remind me of each other? Or it could just be that Bang (LBS's character) seems like he would do something like that. xD

Yoo Ah In!! Such a cutie patotie ^^ and he did all the stunts himself! I hope FK won't turn to makjang. But I have faith in YAI as he always picks good projects. Plus, he's a great actor and I'm looking forward to see him again on small screen. I also hope his movie Wandeugi will play in our local cinema soon :D

I'm probably watching for the sake of seeing Yoo Ah-in and Lee Je-hoon go head to head. The storyline isn't really anyone's definition of original, but I guess when you can pull in two great actors (three if you want to count in Shin Se-kyung) it must've been one good plot. I hope the drama will take a lighter note, perhaps a laugh out loud type of comedy if possible. At least that's the vibe I'm getting from the stills. I guess we'll just have to wait until March. Huzzah!

Did he get thinner? I think his hair looks adorable. He can rock anything.
I'm actually a bit interested to see how they portray fashion because it's a field I love to watch but have no aptitude for.
Perhaps I shall recap it...after I finish Pasta...and Padam Padam...and Perfect Neighbor...and get started on White Christmas...okay gonna stop.
