Hanboks galore at press conference for Moon That Embraces the Sun

Can you be in love with a press conference? Because I love everything about the press conference for The Moon That Embraces the Sun, the fusion-sageuk fantasy-romance drama premiering this Wednesday.

Maybe it’s the cast, whose members are both talented and charismatic, not to mention easy on the eyes. But more than that, I’m swooning over the gorgeous hanboks on display — rich, colorful, and vibrant. I love that everybody got to shine in his or her own colors. I’m particularly drooling over Jung Il-woo‘s bright jewel tones, although Nam Bo-ra’s electric yellow is a close second.

Swoon.

Above is the entire main cast, assembled onstage to make their bows. Let’s cut right to the chase and take a look at each cast member individually —

Kim Soo-hyun plays the fictional young Joseon king. He wears the royal vestments well.

Han Ga-in is the woman who falls for the king, who was raised in an aristocratic family but apparently has no recollection of her upbringing presently, now living as a shaman.

Jung Il-woo plays the king’s older brother (half-brother, I believe). Do you enjoy his puing-puing aegyo pose?

Kim Min-seo plays a woman who looks innocent on the outside, but harbors secret ambitions. She definitely looks the part of the nice, aristocratic lady here, fresh-faced and smiling, but based on Sungkyunkwan Scandal and Baby-Faced Beauty we know she’ll have no problem giving the character an aura of mystery.

Yoon Seung-ah plays the warrior/bodyguard who watches over Han Ga-in:

Where four pretty young men are gathered, there must be an F4. This group has attracted that term, but we’ll have to watch the drama to figure out if it’s apt. The two sidekicks are played by Song Jae-hee in pink and Song Jae-rim in officer’s clothes. I’m sure those names’ll never get confusing.

Nam Bo-ra looks so young! I would’ve guessed she’s in her mid-teens, but she’s already 22, just a year younger than Kim Soo-hyun.

And here’s the cast together:

I was shocked when I first learned Nam Bora's age. She played high school girl in Sunny and Once Upon a Time Saengchori, and TOTALLY looks the part. Girl could pass for being 16.

Nam Bora is so stunningly pretty! I kind of wished she played the main girl cause she'd look terrific besides Kim Soo Hyun!

Agree. But Han probably has the better acting experience to portray such a conflicted character.

IKR! I thought she was in middle school...like 13 or something! In saengchori wasn't she like...in elementary school?!
I cannot believe this!

Anyway, the whole cast is so good looking. I love Song Jae-rim's eyes.
MAERYUK!

I actually thought this was on for tonight. Was waiting patiently for the first raw episode. Got too excited. I read the first 3 chapters as summarized by blue in her blog. Hope they don't veer off much from what I read.

(Also waiting for Wild Romance). Ah, can't wait for Wednesday!

Oh Jung Il-woo, bless you for bringing some levity and pot-boiling metaphors to these press conferences. May we not have to see your hair up in a sangtu for the entire series (yes, I'm shallow).

Amen to that. His hair is still short, though. And about the pot-boiling metaphor, clearly like the majority of us, he's not over FBRS yet.

hey girls sorry to disappoint you but i've seen the 2nd preview for this drama (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZZqbYjokTQ) and it doesn't look like songkyunkwan scandal at all :))))))) it looks more like a serious drama with teen cast . They probably used the name SKK to promote this series ,nothing more really .

It's associated with SKKS because the writer (Jung Eun Gwol) of the novel this was based on also wrote the novel that SKKS was based on. Just not sure if the screenwriter's the same.

Hmmm... Lots of excitement can I see around. But I just can't bring myself to watch a sageuk. Can you help me find any arguments to give it a shot? And I have to say Jung Il Woo is not one. On the other hand I do not want to miss a good bandwagon...

It's fusion.
It's shorter than most sageuks (20 episodes, not 50+).
Most probably will have a lovely soundtrack. *crossesfingers*

I'm 99.99% sure this will be recapped here so you might want to read the first few recaps first before deciding if you like the story enough to watch.

Thanks for the length thing, it surely matters.
As for the fusion - I'm not a fantasy person, either ;) so there must be loads of romance.
Thank you for thoughts! :)

You haven't tried one. What's the loss of trying for one episode? (Although, who knows, it might be better to jump in when the adult storyline starts in this case.)

Are you say KSH isn't an argument either? ;-)

And how about an argument for expanding your cultural horizons? I mean, as a genre, sageuks are something uniquely Korean (although I imagine there might be some parallels to other historical Asian dramas - do they ever do flying people like in Chinese/Taiwanese ones?). You're bound to learn something about Korean culture and history as well - in terms of life they lived, clothing they used to wear, etc.

This will be my first sageuk, so I might have more arguments once I watch this.

Required fields are marked *

Nope, KSH is surely an eye candy and not a wooden one, which I respect, but I am not curious of his performance.

I have caught some films set in ancient Korea, but you're right, I haven't seen any sageuk series.
You're right about the cultural issue, too - it is definitely good to learn about other cultures . I might have seen no series, but I read about Korean culture, and I can honestly say, I am not totally ignorant in that matter.

Korean culture and history is interesting but on intellectual level. It may be difficult to connect to the characters on emotional level.
Here arises another question - how dilligent are the writer/director in portraying the historic background?

I have watched the following sageuks so far (in the order I watched them);

Sungkwunkwan Scandal
The Return of Iljimae
Warrior Baek Dong Soo
The Princess's Man
Dong Yi
Tree with Deep Roots
The Painter of the Wind

I assure you that these dramas have a lot going for them for any drama lover - cinematography, directing, soundtrack, acting, production values, etc. usually above par. I also find them well-written, although my rating is most likely affected by the quality of the subbing. I do not know Korean and watch kdramas with English subs. Except for Painter of the Wind (the English subs for which were horrible), I find the screenplays engaging, literary but not stilted, often laced with humor and the dialogue can be as contemporary as any trendy drama.

There is a lot of history and culture, yes, but the human experience as reflected in each individual character's story and how these interweave with each other in the context of the era, is what drives the narratives in sageuks. Therefore, the emotional experience that results in watching them are both intellectual and affective.

Tree with Deep Roots and The Princess's Man are the most recent sageuks in the list. Both have brought the standards of the genre to a level that is difficult to match, imho. I hope Moon that Embraces the Sun will be able to do this.

Jung Il Woo did very well in The Return of Iljimae but what I especially look forward to is how Kim Soo Hyun's acting chops will show in the genre, as he has proven his ability in all the other dramas he has appeared in so far. You might say I am a KSH watcher. I want to see this kid grow and develop into another Han Su-Kyu. That might be far into the future yet, but for the moment, I hope that at least he shows the caliber of Song Jong Ki's performance in TwDR.

Really excited to see Jung Il Woo again - I'm glad I didn't have to wait to long after his last drama! Not too thrilled with the main female cast though. Han Ga In seems more maturer than the rest of the cast because she is usually paired with older actors in her other dramas. But looking forward to how the chemistry works out.

i love Jung-iL Woo's hanbook. It stands out among all the hanbooks wore by the cast.
I only hoped the main lady was a bit younger than Han Ga-In to match Kim Soo Hyun's baby face, I'm not saying Han Ga-In is not baby face but she looks older than Kim Soo Hyun.

What an abundance of the Pretty!

KSH in his kingly garb is just precious - he looks so excited (they all do - what a happy gathering of a cast!), but why do I want to see him sporting his "K" medallion and holding a tuning fork? :)

Haven't watched a saguek since WBDS - am ready to go for this one!

WOW - loving all the color there!!! Only HGI's outfit is a little plain, due to her character. So it's her character that falls for the king? Or the other way around, or I guess both.

JIW --- oh, I can't wait.

Is one of them playing a Queen? (since we have a king)
