Dramabeans Podcast #9
by javabeans
Another podcast, and this time, girlfriday and I converse with a couple of our guest recappers. Kaedejun, gummimochi, and HeadsNo2 have done such fantastic jobs over the past year or more that we’ve decided to grab them and hold on tight, making them an official part of the Dramabeans family as regular contributors. We think they’re wonderful additions, and we hope you do too (don’t forget to thank ’em in the giveaway post!).
So, we’ve brought them into the latest podcast to introduce them officially to you all; this podcast features gummimochi and kaedejun, while the following one (coming soon!) will feature HeadsNo2.
Podcast #9
Running time: 54:37
In which we talk about:
- Introduce gummimochi and talk about old-school dramas with Song Seung-heon, Lee Byung-heon et al., what got us into dramas, and extensions;
- Variety shows, We Got Married and gummimochi’s Leeteuk love, with an army-duty tangent about ajusshi idols (8:03);
- Running Man and 1N2D (13:45);
- How javabeans finds indie bands (16:00);
- How girlfriday approaches the recapping process (19:45);
- Introduce kaedejun and talk about the dramas she’s covered (29:37);
- The recapping process (39:05);
- The blog and comments (41:00);
- and year end reviews and the dramas that got us started (46:13).

I totally find it weird to hear the voices to the recappers when using their word selection and writing style I come up with what I think they sound like in real life. And then even after listening to the podcasts, I swear I keep some idea of what they sound like, but definitely go back to my the voices in my head that I assigned to each recapper. XD

I swear, the Drama Gods have really been smiling on us lately. It's only mid-January and so far this year, we've already gotten: muchos dramas, including some great ones, a DB giveaway with great prizes, DB podcast #9, moar wonderful recappers joining the DB family (yay!)-- just in time to meet the need created by the muchos dramas. We've even been enjoying another swoonworthy Lee Min Ho.
What's not to love about 2012 in K-dramaland?

I think that if you want to please viewers who like dramas you don't, you should probably get a second recapper to defend the drama against your opinion. Nobody wants to see a recapper hate on a drama they like. And especially since it's only 1 opinion ragging on the drama, the negativity amplifies.
Personally I like it when I have an opposing opinion (as you recappers usually make me see what I'm overvaluing or missing). However, even if you have the best points to defend your opinion, not everyone wants to listen to reason.

Don't know whether I should actually share this... but... your podcast really turned cleaning the guineapig's cage into a pleasant activity :-))))
As for the recaps, I read them for 2 reasons. The first is the same as you said, to once again “relive” the episode together with the thoughts of the recapper (+ extra information, Korean culture references, discussions....). This goes for dramas I watch and there I usually first watch the episode and then read the recap. The second reason is to get the story of dramas I don't want to or can't watch (from various reasons like time, life, universe and everything). Like 1000 Days Promise (too melo for me), High Kick (no time), Bad Guy (don't want to spoil the visual memory by the horrible ending) or Lie To Me (is it still so crappy?). And sometimes I get interested and start watching... and sometimes I stop watching and just read. I think Musical is the one exception when I did both :-)
Anyway, thank you again for this podcast and long live the recaps (and recappers)!

Missed your podcasts too much! :D Nice to hear some new additions to the dramabeans family, always fun to hear :)
The inclusion of super junior songs for the breaks was great too haha.
Love the shoutout for prosecutor princess! I think it's seriously underrated and it really was a fun watch and i was so suprised that i was emotionally attached to it, i was expecting it to be just fluff but it became one of my favourites. Thanks for the recaps even though there are alot of recaps from the guest recappers that i haven't read because i just haven't started watching the drama or i'm not interested (will watch Whats up soon, but generally i'm waiting for the new dramas coming up)

The podcast was great. :D It was really nice having the guest recappers on....aaaaaand since I like HeadsNo2, I'm definitely looking forward to the next one. I don't know if its because of the type of drama TWDR was, but I picture HeadsNo2 having a mature sage-like voice. Haha...I woner how warped my perception will turn out to be.

OMG I totally watched Happy Together when I was young on my local TV station (dubbed in Mandarin and all) but I forgot what it was called. Now that I googled the cast I found it so familiar... I can't remember a lot about the plot of the show but I did like it! Only vague memories about that Lee Byung Hun was the big brother of the family... Oh and Cha Tae Hyun's character had cute stalkerish crush on Jeon Ji Hyun's character (and something about her drinking raw eggs - random thing to remember, I know) and she was like a wannabe-singer who sings at pubs? Okay my memory fails me I might have gotten it all wrong.

My first podcast ever. Woaw ! What an experience, i love it ! So now, after helping me with my written english, i can train my ears in a pleasant way. :).
Warm welcome to the knighted contributors - sword on the shoulder -.
Kaedejun : You've been beanrolled ! AHAHAH !
You guys should start a Youtube channel so we could see your smiling faces. Yes i know : So many dramas, so little time... I truly believe than the k drama community gains in having diversified points of view and recappers. And yes, i agree : K dramaland is for fun. I bless the selective memory ( or rather amnesia ) for the bad dramas, mean comments or korea military duty : Binnie and Rain, i miss you !!
Ajusshi idols : One character pops up in my head. Oska in SeGa. What can i say, some actors are born to age elegantly.
Once again, thanks to all of you for your good job and enthusiasm. We love you and appreciate your dedication. But i guess you already know if you read the comments of the Giveaway #3...

It was really nice to listen to the "new voices" of the family! It always seem as if we know the person more personnaly once we can associate a voice with a name. You girls did really great!
On a side note, as I was listening to podcast on my way to school, I had that super big Eureka moment. You know what you should give away as a part of the 5 years anniversary givaway? A guest spot on the next podcast for some luckyy fans! I think that to have the opinion of an "amateur" can be great too. We, after all, represent all the "commoners" on this website hehe. It would cost nothing and I'm sure that the fan will feel super honored to talk to their "idols" xD

Love your podcasts, they are so informative. I feel like I'm in a class...a K-drama class (BUT I actually care about the topic).
Though I do have one tiny little complaint... It is sometimes hard to differentiate words when your voices overlap. Maybe you could try to avoid speaking at the same time, or maybe repeat some of the things. Especially when it comes to drama titles or names (I like to look them up, so I would know what/who you are talking about).
