Fashion King holds its first script rehearsal
by javabeans
I sincerely hope everybody’s in character at this Fashion King script reading, because man, is that a collection of pissy faces or what? Then again, I’m not sure I want to watch a drama populated by characters wearing pissy faces, even if we’ve got Yoo Ah-in (Sungkyunkwan Scandal) leading the charge.
Let’s just hope the collective cranky comes from holding the drama’s initial rehearsal on Christmas Eve. In attendance, other than Yoo, were Shin Se-kyung (Tree With Deep Roots) in the leading lady role, with hot rising film star Lee Je-hoon as a supporting character. (Seriously? Lee Je-hoon is gonna be huge. He’s taken home five awards so far this year, for his roles in war film The Front Line and the dark indie drama Bleak Night. Other titles on his filmography include Gong Yoo’s rom-com Finding Kim Jong-wook and the queer film Just Friends.) Filling out the main quartet is SNSD member Yuri in her first drama role.
Also at the script read were the rest of the supporting cast of approximately 20 actors, PD Lee Myung-woo (What Happened in Bali) in a reunion with his Bali writers Lee Sun-mi (Sweet Spy, Super Rookie) and Kim Ki-ho (Sweet Spy, Invisible Parachute Agent).
Fashion King bears a lot of similarities, description-wise, to the shaky 2009 rom-com Cinderella Man, but it sounds like they’re aiming for a different vibe. Cinderella Man had a birth secret, a chaebol, and a switched-identities plotline, but Fashion King is positioning itself as a “story full of humanity about young people facing the world and dealing with challenge and success, love and ambition, and weathering the ups and downs of their obsession with love and endless ambition.” Gotta love the redundant descriptions, describing redundantly.
The drama is scheduled to follow History of the Salaryman, which premieres on January 2.

Maybe that she takes a break between dramas, instead of going from one directly into the other?
Neither JIW nor she had a break after extremely successful shows. They could have just rested for a while and done CFs.
I hope both are taking care of themselves. No IV's please!

ME TOO.
Btw, LEE JE-HOON with YOO AH IN on the SAME SCREEN..!!! This is BIG, no, more than big, this is HUGE! Oh My Gosh.
HOTness is everywhere, overload. My screen's gonna be cracked then bursted!
ANYWAY, Let's hope the story is great so there will be no more talent waste. They don't describe the story so clearly. But I have faith in the actors especially Yoo Ah In and Lee Je-hoon. Both of them so far picking up nice projects and building up their resume so no way they gonna choose some crazy storyline for their new drama.
It's been a year for Yoo Ah In since his last drama in 2010.
And I was really curious why Lee Je-hoon pick up a drama for his new project. What about his new movie the Fortuneteller? There's no news about it (dramabeans is my Only source, I was too lazy to browse other sites). I thought he's building up a career as future leading man in Chungmuro. He done so well. But I guess he has a good reason why he chose this, given his last projects which are all great if I say so myself.
Well javabeans, I don't think Shin Se-kyung look pissy, she just seriously reading the script. As for Yoo An In and Lee Je-hoon I think they both rehearse their dialogue.
Oh,I almost forget, on what channel this will air??

You guys are working overtime during Christmas. Do Koreans really celebrate Christmas like in the US? 'Seems like these actors are all working overtime. 2012 season is off to a flying start with an ambitious line up.
I've finally figured out who Shin Se-kyung reminds me of, a very young Choi Ji-woo.

Lol no, Christmas is nowhere near as big a deal here as it is in the States. It's mostly for businesses to break out all their pretty Christmas lights (the Lotte department store is gorgeous all lit up) and for couples to date and for singles to feel miserable about being alone. Some places are closed on Christmas, but most stay open. *shrug*

In Europe Christmas is a big deal too! If you tried yesterday to buy some bread anywhere in Europe, you would be outta of luck! Were opened just the cinemas and cafes for ppl to date! Generally we go visit our families ( We don't live with mom and dad like Koreans do )

That sounds like Christmas here in the States nowadays too: big pretty lights and decorations, one Christmas dinner and party after another, couples dating, miserable singles (like myself) cursing those happy couples then turning to rom-com marathons and holiday snacks for comfort... And then there are those packed retail stores the week right before Christmas full of angry shoppers.

Have you seen a Christmas celebration where in they start celebrating Christmas from September through January? In the Philippines, that's how they roll! I remember when I was living in the Philippines, radio stations would start playing Christmas songs and gradually, they all play Christmas songs until December. The Christmas trees and lights are still up until January though... the malls and cinemas are also open during Christmas for family bonding and couples dating, but they go around the afternoon because the morning of Christmas day, kids go around the village they live in and pay respects to other people, and in return, they give you money. For adults, they go around the place where they live in and eat food... it's basically an open buffet for all people, whether you know them or not :)

Xmas is a huuuuge thing here in Oceania. I'm in NZ and Xmas is always the most celebrated holiday of the year, it's the only day, along with good (Easter) Friday that are declared 'holy' days and all shops and businesses have to close. And then boxing day(26th) it's pretty much like the US' black Friday and there are crazy sales at the malls and whatnot.

she's only the second female lead. In most kdramas, out of the 4 leads, isn't the second female lead often the most 2-dimensional and easiest to act? No need to waste a ton of talent on it.

This isn't the first time Yoo Ah-In had to act along side an idol (SKKS had DBSK/JYJ's Mickey Yoochun). And Lee Je Hoon looks more traumatized than pissed here. The vulnerable expression makes me want to hug him.
While I tend to dislike idols being cast in roles that could have gone to real actors, I think the negative attention should be director more towards the casting directors who want to use the idol-actor-as-lead ploy to generate interest rather than towards the idol - unless that idol had proved him/herself to be a seriously mediocre actor through several dramas already. Maybe Yuri will surprise us?

Okay, let's pretend that a girl who never acted in her whole life will bring down a whole drama, since she won't be given only one scene. That and the fact that she will probably be the romantic pair of Lee Je-hoon. Now, I'm super optimistic, because we're in the end of the year, you know. Oh, Micky Yoochun had appeared in two dramas before Sungkyunkwan Scandal and he still was the most limited actor in the sageuk F4. But, there's always a Kim Hyun Joong to prove my words wrong with his amazing acting skills. Before anyone throws rocks at me, I truly hope that Yuri blow me away with her performance and I eat my words, because the early criticism is necessary if she wants to suceed in this field, that excludes amazing young actors without an opportunity.

Hahaha.... OMG! The pissy faces!
Maybe it's the script, it must be really, REALLY bad to warrant those kinds of expressions out of its actors.
But what a fine cast, Shin Se-kyung was fabulous in Tree, Lee Je-hoon was phenomenal in the war-flick The Front Line and I've always heard good things about Yoo Ah-in. His recent project Wandeuki was a massive hit, too.
I'm unsure about Yuri's acting but I do kind of adore her.
But truthfully, with a title like 'Fashion King' I only wonder what kind of script it'll have...

I really do hope the drama is steering (far, far) away from makjang land and safely into land of hopes and dreams. Everyone loves a zero to hero story, right? Right?
And dude! That script cover! I need a bigger, HQ version of it. Fashion icons Andy Warhol style. The cover brings promise. Hopefully many, many really hot outfits to come. And Yoo Ah-in running a sewing machine. Rawr.

it's more the fact that idols just aren't made of the same caliber that actual actors/actresses are, and don't have the same kind of time to really get immersed into their roles. it's hard enough to juggle their own schedules as it is, without having to add something new like acting on their plate.

Considering Kim Min Jong is the only really capable actor to come out of SME and all their idol actors have ranged from abysmally bad to mediocre at best, the criticism is warranted and expected. Also everyone knows how busy SNSD is so it's highly unlikely that yuri will be able to fully immerse into the role so unless she is naturally gifted like some actors which lets face it is unlikely, it makes sense that people would prefer the lead go to an actual actor rather than an idol whose company is only using this as another way to gain money especially an idol with such limited amount of experience. If she was a less busy idol I probably would have a little more optimism but after seeing what being a SNSD member has done to the early acting potential I saw in yoona (she was so charming in 9ends2outs but so dull in all her projects post-SNSD debut) I don't expect much.

Yes, let's hope these are looks of concentration, not mood.
I watched some bts of WHIB, a story of 4 of the most unhappy, pissy characters in the history of drama AND, the actors were all a-giggle and smiles. I am hoping this PD is as good here at keeping the set light whether the theme of the show is dark or not.
Of course, it could also have been that JIS and HJW are just fun people no matter what they are doing!
