Spy action thriller Berlin scores powerhouse cast
by girlfriday
Wow, what a threesome. Big-budget action movie Berlin has confirmed a stellar three-top cast for a game of spy versus spy… versus spy? I mean, what do you DO with three leading men in one movie? Ha Jung-woo (Hwanghae) has just joined Ryu Seung-beom (The Unjust) and Han Seok-kyu (currently headlining SBS sageuk Tree With Deep Roots) in what looks to be the power struggle of the coming year.
Berlin is a long-awaited project from director Ryu Seung-wan (The Unjust, The Fixer, Battlefield Heroes), and boasts a 10 billion won project backed by CJ E&M. It’s about a North Korean spy who’s deep undercover as a South Korean spy… and then gets burned by the North. Ouch.
It’ll all be filmed on location in Berlin, where something goes awry to send the undercover spy running for his life. Ha Jung-woo will play the Northern double agent, and Han Seok-kyu his boss (his South Korean NSA boss). Ryu Seung-beom plays the North Korean assassin sent to kill Ha Jung-woo once the North burns him. Dude, this sounds so badass.
It’ll be Han Seok-kyu’s first visit back to the spy world since the infamous 1998 spy movie Shiri. It’s hard to believe he’s managed to stay spy-free since then. Ryu Seung-beom already has a working relationship with the director, having starred in The Unjust, so there’ll be a reunion there. And Ha Jung-woo happens to currently be shooting Love Fiction with Ryu Seung-beom’s real-life girlfriend, Gong Hyo-jin, where the two play a couple in love. Um, AWKWARD.
It’s a good thing they’re playing enemies. I suppose it’ll help provide motivation for Ryu Seung-beom to want to assassinate him? I’d pay to see the behind-the-scenes of this movie more than the actual movie. After completing the female cast, the production will head to Berlin to begin filming early next year.

was just gonna say that. I think Seung-beum has been in a lot of his brother's movies. Seung-beum was famous first but now I think Seung-wan can hire whoever the hell he wants XD

I dont think so. perhaps mainstream was able to recognize RSB's name first, but in the K-film world, RSW became more renowned first. He was an assistant of Park Chang Wook for crying out loud!
btw, i know it's all for fun, and i hate to be a devil's advocate, but i kinda didnt appreciate the implication that RSB is a little "unprofessional" that he'd take on HJW for simply starring alongside GHJ. i guess i'm taking it seriously but RSB is one of the most professional actors out there.

All this tostesterone needs to be bottled. I know I'd like to find it in my Christmas stocking. Just think how helpful a spritz of this could be on a not-going-so-great date... let me go back up and take another look.
Yup. I'd buy the economy-sized bottle. And put a big bow on it.

Han Seok-kyu is now one of my favorites! He is incredible in TWDR. I had not seen him in anything before TWDR, but I am gonna look him up!
This movie sounds great, I'd love to see it.

I can't wait for the female role to be cast.
I would really want Kim So Yeon to be cast b/c she
can do "badass" like no one else (but we already went through that with Iris).
So other choices would be Son Ye Jin or Ha Ji Won.

Oh yeah this is incredibly intriguing...Ha Jungwoo is No. 1 hunted man in K movies it seems, as a bottom feeder or a yuppie bureaucrat. Ryu SB as a scary killer is wetdream of many around the world LOL. And Han was spy in Double Agent before - this was very vilified by the press expecting a slambang like Shiri/IRIS (they share same ending, in fact). But the movie was like a poor cousin of Tinker Tailor (TV), a nice try. All 3 are best possible guys for each role of the genre (Han also did the political stint in impressive President's Last Bang). Can't believe director Ryu had grown up so much to even think of tackling this!

Whoa, this is an awesome cast! All three are super stellar and all the butt-heading in movie sounds so cool. I'm not into thrillers but an action thriller? I'm in.

Actually, Ryu Seung-Wan is Ryu Seung-bum's older brother. So, the working relationship follows naturally. As for Han Suk Kyu, his last "spy" film was "Double Agent" or 이중간첩 in 2002. He played a double agent betrayed by both North and South Korean governments, just like Ha Jung-Woo's character in the upcoming "Berlin".

Tell me the flu meds aren't making me dream... did you just say another Ryu brothers movie?
Do you have any idea how much I love Ryu Seung-wan & Ryu Seung-beom? Arahan is and will forever be on my favourite list and I've watched it so many times that my friend has to smack me for suggesting another round.
Hell, I did a Ryu Seung-beom marathon three weeks ago! I wish they'd do another one where he's the main. That man make me laugh.
