Lee Na-young eyes drama from Secret Garden writer

A number of leading ladies have met with great popular and critical success via a Kim Eun-sook vehicle: Kim Jung-eun (Lovers in Paris), Kim Haneul (On Air), and Ha Ji-won (Secret Garden), to name a few. Now Lee Na-young (Runaway Plan B) is circling ’round the latest project from the star scriptwriter, according to new reports.

Lee isn’t confirmed for the role, her reps have noted, but she IS considering it very favorably. The project is called A Gentleman’s Dignity, which you may recall was the project recently rumored to be courting Jang Dong-gun as its lead. Lee has received the offer but has not put anything in writing.

Kim Eun-sook is the kind of writer many actors would probably jump to work with sight unseen, because she’s got such a strong body of work and has churned out hit after hit. She’s known for her slick, rapid-fire dialogue, with tons of fast banter. For the record, I sort of hate her writing. I’ve been burned by her endings more than once, and I find her fancy writing hollow. But, I do see her popular appeal and have no doubt this one will probably be a huge hit, like the others. It’s just a matter of taste.

The drama is described so far as simply a “romance melo” and would be a weekend SBS series to air next spring, tentatively in March or April.

will someone else recap this then, since you "sort of hate her writing?" i honestly don't want to hear putdown after putdown in the recaps like last time...i've enjoyed all your recaps until the one unmentionable episode in secret garden.

I agree. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinions. I have to agree with jb on this. I'm not really a fan of her works except City Hall. I hope this drama might be good.

I thought the request was rude and thus, deserved a more blunt answer. Plus, this is Javabean's domain, so she's perfectly entitled to writing whatever and how ever pleases. Just my 2 cents.

Love your sharp answers! hehe x)
And I also hate her writing.
To put it simple, she just lures you into thinking that the world is a marvelous place and that you can find a hot true love... through all the forced and wrong reasons.
It's been already three times that I fell for it, but I've learned my lesson.

It's just funny that most of the people here always follow the writer's opinion. Almost all people from the blogs and sites I freguent said that dramabeans is full of haters and I think that's true.

Not always the case. People tend to argue against whoever is recapping on DB if they don't agree with what's being said. And what sites and blogs do you follow? I don't mind trying it out if it gives me a chance to read differing opinions on the shows I'm watching or planning on watching.

I think Beanies/People-that-frequent-DB are nice people. People here mostly go on the offense when (1) a troll shows up to, well, TROLL and (2) When people try to TELL jb and her crew how to run the site. It's their site, telling a recapper how to recap is like trying to tell a lion how to be a lion. It just doesn't work like this.

P.S. jb lists Fantasy Couple at the bottom of her Hong Sisters list and girlfriday disliked it like hell, and it's my favorite from the the Hong Sisters. And it's not the only thing I have different opinion compared to them. So count me on the list of people who DON'T always follow the writer's opinion. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who has participated in discussions on recaps fullheartedly disagreeing with the recappers.

0

The funniest thing is that I don't agree with their opinions in more than 10 projects, but I don't nag that they have to think and like the same things as me. Oh, and like @Ani wisely said, it also happens with a lot of guest posts here. Like the time when Thundie did that awesome alternative recap about Ptb, NGH and CYHMH and the hardcore fans were awful to her. So, who are the haters, now?

0

One of the things I really, really enjoy about Javabeans is she doesn't EVER beat around the bush and you always know you're going to hear things straight up.

Rather than rude, the reply is simple and to the point, much like her writing.

And, as others have mentioned, as the genius behind this site that brings said-recaps to the k-drama loving masses, I think she has a right to her opinion and to deliver it in anyway she sees fit.

The key word is "opinion". The word itself invariably means that some will agree and others will disagree with her. If you don't like her recaps, write your own.

Is that the one with the forced bed scene/scenario? I actually loved Secret Garden and didn't agree with some of the things pointed out in the recaps, but this is NOT your blog and it is NOT your recaps. The writer has the discretion to give her opinion in any way she wants, no point in getting annoyed and saying things like ‘I honestly don’t want to hear putdown after putdown in the recaps like last time’, because like it or not, a lot of effort went into writing the episode recaps and you’re being kind of rude. There that’s me done. Kthanksbyee! :D

I know the first comment was kind of rude, but i didn't expect such a sharp/ cold and almost agressive answer, even when i know that most of the time db's scent is witticism or irony.

It's like fighting rudeness with a whole lot more rudeness...i just expected, i don't know, perhaps a debate or so...I'm not certain if i made my point clear but that's what i felt...maybe i preffer smart discussions to heavy arguments...

javabeans' reply doesn't seem rude to me. It's simply matter-of-fact and elegantly straightforward. What's there to debate? If bing "honestly [doesn't] want to hear putdown after putdown" why would she continue to read the recaps? or expect someone else to do the recaps?

If she had said 'the easiest answer is not to read them you jackass', that would have been aggressive. Why the hell should she debate? The easiest answer is for the person to just not read them. O_o I don't know how much more obvious and to the point the response can get.

"was KIND of rude"? It was very rude. DB's reply wasn't aggressive in the least, it was sensible. Why is it that some people think they can tell the writers of this blog what to write and how. It just riles me up. Oh, and your reply of "how rude" wasn't exactly "smart discussion-esque".

hehe can't get FBRS out of our mind, aren't we? the same here :P yeah I tried to google info about her, but only get the name Yoon Nan Joong.

about KES' works, only watched 3; loved city hall, ambivalent about SG (loved Binnie, HJW and the cinematography but not so much the plot), disliked lovers in paris,

about recap; loved snarky comments, appreciated all opinions, disliked ungraciousness.

I think FBRS is the first drama she/he (not sure what his/her sex is) has penned. Name is 윤난중 (Yoon Nan Joong). The PD of this drama doesn't have a lot of works under his belt too. 정정화 (Jang Jeong Hwa) is the name...

Is she the one who wrote "Lovers" and "City Hall"? if she is her, I loved Secret Garden and City Hall, but Lovers, I fast-forwarded half of it.

If she isnt the same person, I still love Secret Garden, but the "romantic melo" thing about this drama is not appealing to me now, Im in the mood for something funnier.

And I have to disagree. Please, Javabeans, If you are planning to recap this one, i hope you can do the recaps.

Is my princess under her? I never knew coz that drama doesn't come close to her standard.

What I like about her writing is, the heroin characters that are cute on their own ways, like Kim Sun Ah in her weird antics in City Hall and Jeon Do Yun in Lovers in Prague with her cute bear song and even Ha Ji Won with her fangirling on Osca.

But the fairy tale story line, sometimes bother me coz you could never in real life can get a Hyun Bin or Cha Seung Won or Lee Seo Jin that is devoted to u even with all the flaws. But still a girl can fantasize right.

Required fields are marked *

Yes, i remember reading that she wrote my princess...or not??? Sorry my mind is not that trustworthy (neither is my writing ¬¬)

Omg ...me too i love the heroines that are cute/ stupid = cupid or stute hahaha

However if you think of the fairy tale a drama creates, that is present in every single korean tv story... Starting for the handsome people they present, continuing with the events that most of the time are unrealistics (abundacy of tumor, colds, gansters, unrequitted loves, ever lasting loves...rggg) and finishing with those fake kisses. Damn it!. If I had one of those guys in front of me i wouldn't be that shy and believe me i'm very conservative and timid XD

The reason why i continue watching these dramas is because they are funny, when you don't want to think that much. They can be sensitive when you look carefully and when you are very picky you can find shows that touch your heart and mind. I have found characters whose experiences have taught me a few things about life. (Well, when i adapt them to my life experiences)

See, I love snarky recaps, so if it strikes your fancy to write about this one at all then by all means go ahead, JB! And if you end up hating it later (or sooner, whatevs) then at least I'll be entertained.

PS: I've only seen a few of her dramas, but Secret Garden left a bad taste in my mouth and I never quite got the City Hall hype. Hello! Miss was fluffy, though, and it introduced me to Ha Suk-jin (aka HotBar) so I forgive it for being so fail.

The only one I have seen is Secret Garden, which I liked all right but it wasn't brilliant. I remember thinking that some of the dialogue (particularly between the two main leads) absolutely didn't make sense at all.

The basic idea for Secret Garden was fine, and it did use the body-switching in a different way than most films/dramas I had previously seen... but some of the dialogue did-not-make-sense-at-all.

Did you watch it with English subtitles? B/c a problem I find with English translations for Korean/Chinese/Japanese shows is that a lot of the dialogue doesn't translate.

I remember watching Secret Garden w/ Chinese subtitles, and barring the occasional translation snafu I thought the dialogue was really fast, funny and sharp. But with English subtitles the same dialogue seemed ridiculous most of the time.

Granted the plotting was all over the place for Secret Garden, and the character development was practically nonexistent, but it remains one of my favorite dramas for the sole reason that it gave us Hyun Bin-as-Joo Won. He was on fire in that role! I could spend hours watching him, I don't even care that all he and Ra Im did was run around in circles.

Required fields are marked *

The body-switching thing in "SG" was a gimmick - it's like the writer didn't put in the effort to integrate the body-switching more into the story-line, and the hilarity that should have ensued didn't really happen (a few chuckles and that's about it).

I have a strange relationship with Secret Garden. I really thought it was poor. TRULY. Hyun Bin was great, don't get me wrong, but the whole thing made no sense to me at all.

One would think that with that sort of reaction I would be adverse to watching it again. But no. If I listen to the OST (which is AMAZING) then I have a HUGE desire to watch it again, and I usually do. Then the cycle continues. "Why am I watching this crap?" "Oh the music is so good." "How is Ha Ji-won so fit and beautiful?" "What is this BS Hyun Bin is pulling?" "This is crap." "Let's watch it again."

WTF.

I haven't find Hyun Bin appealing as an actor N this drama just pile it to worse.
SG even pulled me back from my love to HJW...she is my fave K-actress no more...

Javabeans, do not be put off by people who are rude. If the flavour of the coffee is not to your liking, don't drink it. I love your snarky recaps, and your intelligent analysis and entertaining comments. I agree with you on this one about the writing. I enjoyed Secret Garden because of the awesome acting but I was disappointed with the story. As for Lee Na young, I was not impressed in Runway Plan B, but perhaps she will surprise me in this new drama.

I know love the snarky recaps too. It makes the recaps even more fun to read. I enjoy reading the recapper's comments (whether it be jb, girlfriday, or any guest blogger) because it makes me see another way to interpret what's going on. Sometimes I don't agree, often enough I do, but that's what makes it fun. I can't understand why people complain so much for a free service. Hell, if they keep complaining, what are they going to do if jb and girlfriday decide to call it a day and close up shop?

I find Kim Eun-sook's dramas forgettable. JB and GF were just talking about "drama stickiness" in the podcast and for me, Kim's penned dramas don't stick to me like the Hong sisters' or Noh Hee-kyung's dramas (and the one who wrote Will it snow and I'm sorry I love you. too lazy to Google. sorry).

For sure, Lovers in Paris, City Hall and Secret Garden were good, but after watching them, they don't really stick to my mind like, a month after watching them. I don't even think I can bear rewatching them again. Hyun Bin was outstanding in SG, but after watching it, that's it for me, his character didn't stick to my mind like the one in World they live in (Noh Hee-kyung drama). It's the same with Cha Seung-won. He was more endearing as Dokko Jin than Go Juk. Granted, those were two different genres. But their character's resonance were different.

So yeah, not really looking forward to whatever Kim Eun-sook will write in the future. It's great that her dramas are popular, but that's just it.

Gah. I submitted too soon.

continuation: "It’s great that her dramas are popular, but that’s just it." There's no substance. All fluff and drama. Now I know dramas are like stress-reliever (on my case), but sometimes I like it when dramas make me pause and ponder about life. But I guess that's what Noh Hee-kyung dramas are for. Anyway. I'll stop now.

agree that i don't like her writing. secret garden was fun yes, but it was long and dragging and didn't have a very solid plot. it was much like a sitcom, one that can be enjoyed when watched an episode at a time but can't really be considered one coherent body of work.

I'm not sure whether to be excited for it or not.
I've only seen Lovers in Paris (most of it), City Hall, and Secret Garden by this writer and feel that the writer is a mixed-bag. I loved City Hall and it was a drama that stood well upon reflection. Plot, characterization, and theme were all solid. Lovers in Paris was pretty blah. The best parts was the second male lead who pined after the insipid female lead and the ending, which 99% of all LIP viewers hated. And Secret Garden was an obsession. I think individual episodes, scenes, and interactions were wonderful and I munched on them like candy, but once you take a step back and reflect on it, it was an unfulfilling drama.

I agree w/ JB - the writing for "Secret Garden" was filled w/ rapid-fire dialogue, but it was mostly empty and not what I would really categorize as banter (banter has a connotation of FUN to it).

There was a lot of (fun) banter in "My Princess", "The Greatest Love", "MGIAG", etc. - but "SG"? Not so much (more annoying than anything else).

Plus, the general storyline was stupid, full of cliches and the characters were basically one-dimensional and not very interesting.

And worst of all, the relationship btwn the 2 leads (and how it developed over time, or rather didn't) did not make any sense.

I know "SG" was a big hit and won numerous awards (including for writing - lol), but I'd almost rather watch "Lie to Me" (almost).

Anyway, I do really like Lee Na-young.

i think from "bing"'s point of view. he or she was just upset that her favourite drama got pwned by jb. no one really likes it when they love something but hear other people say it was garbage. i, for one, certainly don't like it and i hated that "unmentionable episode" recap but hey, not your website. and jb is right. if you're not writing it, there is a high probability there will be things you won't want to hear. so i guess just stick with skimming through the recap and bypass the comments if you don't want to hear negative things about your fav drama. or don't read it then.

i liked On Air but didn't like secret garden. These are the only 2 dramas I've seen from this writer.

Anyway, Lee Na Young is a very unique actress. She has a very different acting style from other actresses and most of the time, she downplays her beauty on movies/dramas but she always looks gorgeous in CFs. People who don't know much about her should watch her past dramas like 'Ruler of Your Own World' or movies like 'Maundy Thursday' and 'Someone Special'. Her acting is awesome.

For me, it is a total snoozefest when everyone totally adores something - I like to see things from as many different angles as possible. I don't read recaps to validate my own feelings, I read recaps to learn something new. So while City Hall is my favorite Kdrama of all, I can understand why some people don't like it.
