Cha Tae-hyun in period costume for Gone With the Wind

Here’s a look at Cha Tae-hyun (Hello Ghost, Speed Scandal) in his first historical costume for a role, looking every bit the Joseon-era fool. It’s hard to believe that this is the funnyman’s first foray into the sageuk biz, since he looks right at home, and perfectly suited for the transformation. In fact, I think he should do period pieces more often, since this is the first time he doesn’t look like he’s just playing himself (the one downside to being such a known face/persona).

The film is Gone With the Wind, a comedy about a Joseon-era group of thieves who band together as the best of the best, for one big heist. The score? Why ice, of course. Hence the literalness of the silly title. Since it’s a comedy, I hope they shoot it extra fusiony, like it’s really an Ocean’s Eleven, just set in olden times, as advertised.

And as long as we’re making wishes, can the heist actually be really cool, even if the point is the funny? There’s nothing better than a really satisfying heist movie. I already love the idea that they’re stealing something that’s valuable while completely ephemeral, and that transporting ice has an inherent ticking clock attached, plotwise. It’s a pretty ingenious idea for a movie, and one that actually doesn’t feel stale or done to death.

Cha Tae-hyun plays Duk-moo, leader of the gang of thieves, who recruits them one by one. He’s described as a prankster who’s extremely resourceful and clever, with quick reflexes. He looks a little more like the class clown than the clever fox in these stills, but I’m sure he’ll manage to be both at the end of the day. Maybe village idiot is his cover. Aha! Clever!

Directing is Kim Joo-ho, and the impressive cast includes Oh Ji-ho, Min Hyo-rin, Lee Chae-young, Sung Dong-il, Go Chang-seok, Song Jong-ho, Chun Bo-geun and Kim Hyang-gi. Let the ice war begin!

Gone With the Wind is due out early next year.

Cha Tae-hyun looks good in sageuk garb. The cast sounds golden and the plot seems riddled with potential and hilarity. Can't wait.

CTH was one of the reasons why FFML ended up being so annoying.

Anyway, he actually looks better w/ the sageuk garb and facial hair.
