If you want political overtones, try Lagaan (this one is a period piece set during the British Raj and has tons of cricket and also hungry, starving peasants and some really snooty British bastards, but mostly cricket), Rang De Basanti, and Fanaa (this one's got terrorists). (You can tell I don't watch many of these.) (They also feature the same actor. This is not a coincidence.)

If you want easy, breezy romance, try Love Aaj Kal, Jab We Met, Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na (I'd watch for the soundtrack alone, but it's charming all over), Bunty Aur Babli (Cons! Heists! Shenanigans!), Salaam Namaste, Veer-Zaara, Dil Chahta Hai, Hum Tum (Bollywood's When Harry Met Sally), and Dil Bole Hadippa (this one has cross-dressing! And, okay, it's got cricket, but also cross-dressing!).

If you're in the mood for drama, try Devdas (2002 and 1955; more alcohol than your average frat boy can easily consume and has the corroded liver to prove it), Saaathiya, Jodhaa Akbar, My Name is Khan, Kal Ho Na Ho, Parineeta (2005), Vivah (okay, so this one's hetero-normative like whoa, but adorable nonetheless), Taare Zameen Par (this one's plot is centered very firmly on a dyslexic child), Saathiya, Koi Mil Gaya (Flowers for Algernon meets ET), and anything with Amitabh Bachchan ever.

If you want humor, try Munna Bhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munna Bhai (these two feature the same characters, though they are independent of each other) and 3 Idiots (this one defies characterization; it's flipping hilarious, but will also make you sob like your heart is breaking. Seriously, if you watch nothing else on this list, watch this one).

If you want OTT Bollywood ridiculousness, try Dilwaale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge (this one's a childhood favorite), Main Hoon Naa, Om Shanti Om (though I'd recommend watching this with a Bollywood buff to get all the in-jokes), Don (2006; this one is also really action-heavy), and Dabangg (more action! and a really freaking weird courtship, but whatever) and Aaja Nachle.

Some old ones: Pakeezah, Umrao Jaan (1981), Sholay, Mughal-e-Azam. I don't watch much that was produced before the early nineties, so I can't help much if you want vintage Bollywood. I've watched every movie here, though, and I can vouch for the quality thereof--these are some really good movies, I promise!

Lol, you guys are great.

I actually really, really didn't like KANK. It was a very visually interesting film, and the characters therein were really complicated and flawed and shit, but I felt like the movie was manipulating tears out of me with OTT histrionics as opposed to moving me with genuine emotion.

Funny story about that one, though. I went to see it with a huge chunk of my extended family--over twenty of us, I think--based on the fact that 1) Karan Johar directed it, and 2) SRK was in it, so it was a family film, duh! (Obviously, none of us had read the previews.) I actually got stuck between my grandparents, so when the sex scene came on, oh God, I wanted to die. And we had a bunch of little kids with us, so there was a constant stream of "Is it done yet?", "Can we watch now?", and the classic "How come you guys get to watch the bad stuff?"

I don't really like Khabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham either. I've seen it one too many times to take seriously and the conflict is basically "Big B needs to get his head out of his ass long enough to realize that it's really not that big of a deal. Not enough to sustain that behemoth.

I just watched "My Name is Khan" yesterday and I loved it. Oh, how much I love watching things without subtitles, haha
