Jang Dong-gun considers drama with Secret Garden writer
by javabeans
Jang Dong-gun, back for a television drama? Please make this happen!
The latest talk is that A-lister Jang (Warrior’s Way, Good Morning President) is considering teaming with star writer Kim Eun-sook in her next drama, the title of which she recently revealed to be A Gentleman’s Dignity. This would be pretty perfect casting, given that when you say “dignified gentleman,” I pretty much think Jang Dong-gun. He’s something like Korea’s George Clooney — once a hot property on television, now focusing exclusively on film — and has the same aura of dapper charm.
Kim Eun-sook most recently wrote last year’s fantasy-melodrama sensation Secret Garden (as well as a string of other hits like Lovers in Paris, On Air, City Hall), which had a pretty blockbuster lineup with Hyun Bin and Ha Ji-won, but this match-up might even outshine that. There were recent reports that her next project would be an idol drama, but writer Kim has come out to declare those claims false, which is a good thing because Jang Dong-gun, while extremely pretty, is about two decades removed from idol contention.
The deets:
A Gentleman’s Dignity, a “romantic melo,” is being planned for a March 2012 broadcast. It’ll be a weekend SBS drama, and I wouldn’t worry that it’s a long-running series since weekends do occasionally air miniseries (as was the case for Secret Garden). Writer Kim recently met with Jang Dong-gun’s reps and has extended the offer, and his reps confirmed that he is considering the role.
Jang’s last foray into television was eleven whole years ago in the quintessential Hallyu-Cinderella romance All About Eve (with a very young Chae Rim and a scene-stealing, backstabbing Kim So-yeon). Rumors of his drama return have cropped up periodically over the years, but nothing has materialized, so I take this casting rumor with a grain of salt. But I can dream.

Wow it will be a miracle to see him doing a drama, however no matter how popular some stars are... the story written for a drama matters the most

And it would be a miracle too if Chae Rim were casting as the female lead in Gentleman's dignity.

But it's Jang Dong Gun! Every ahjumma's favorite. With Chae Rim's pairing, the rating will explode.

Wow, Kim Eun-sook can really bring in the big name stars. City Hall and Secret Garden both featured A-listers who do mostly film. I wonder, if this materializes, who will play opposite him?

I read Song Yunah had a hand in recommending Cha Seong Won for City Hall...
But if they can get JDG back on tv, that'll be a coup that's for sure. I MISSED him. Loved him and all about eve and the other casts. It's one of my first kdramas.

sigh..why would a big star go back to the small screen? I dunno..the script or director/writer better be good or be extremely persuasive.

A Hallyu drama is very lucrative. You will get paid a higher salary than for a big budget movie. You may get earnings off of reruns and foreign TV runs. In addition, your visibility in Asia will be improved, thus increasing your salary leverage. That all said, JDG is already at the top of the mountain, and I doubt he takes this option. ESPECIALLY after passing up on Peninsula.

Secret Garden had a lot going for it: wonderful actors, lovely music and photography, engaging wordplay, etc... But, for all that, it had a lot of problems with its narrative. I was very disappointed in the uneven and meandering story telling which undermined an otherwise enchanting production.
I am, therefore, not so eager to see more resources wasted on this writer.

"Engaging wordplay" is being quite generous when it comes to the script of "SG."
I know that the script for "SG" ended up getting numerous awards, but it just goes to show that those awards are more popularity contests than anything really regarding merit/quality.

Houstontwin - I agree. But she also did City Hall and that was better in narrative quality whereas Secret Garden had some good one liners and occasional conversations. It was the follow through in the plot that killed it.
For me the BEST part of SG was the OST. Seriously adore that thing. Well chosen pop songs, well written score.
BTW If anyone knows the composer for the score please let me know. I've been scouring the internet but to no avail! Help help!

I am elated and terrified at the same time. On one hand, I have been waiting for years for JDG to come back to the small screen. On the other hand, I'm not a fan of Kim Eun-sook's narratives either. I think she is genius in casting pairs because they always seem to have sizzling chemistry, and they're all really great actors. But that's not enough for me. I really want JDG's comeback drama to be a well-written one. I am torn.

I welcome these news since I may the one of the few who actually liked him better in drama than on film.
And I love this writer (just don't force her into extantion, that's where things go crazy)
But am I crazy for wanting to watch JDG paired with Kim Tae Hee? I think they would look great together.

Wow, Jang Dong-gun back on the small screen? I'D LOVE IT! Please make it happen!
I watched All About Eve ages ago and I remember looking him up on Dramawiki and gaping at his drama list... because.. it's so.. miniscule!
I really loved the drama and his acting. I hope he gets paired up with someone cute! Chae Rim is a dream but might as well wish for it. :-)
