So Ji-sub and Han Hyo-joo’s sad romance in Only You

Posters and stills are out for Only You, the movie starring So Ji-sub and Han Hyo-joo in a “beautiful but sad” love story, which appears to be So’s specialty. (See also: I’m Sorry, I Love You, What Happened In Bali, and Road No. 1. The man has tragic romance down to an art form.)

Han Hyo-joo plays Jung-hwa, a woman who has lost her sight in an accident but maintains a positive outlook. On the flipside is So Ji-sub as Chul-min, a former boxer with a dark past. Just once I’d like to see that dynamic flipped — nihilistic heroine paired with an optimistic hero. Just to mix things up a little, you know what I mean? Why does it always have to be the pure, sweet woman who turns around the man’s dark/cold/emotionally inaccessible worldview? I think the setup has long lost its punch, and the cliches need a little shakeup. Chungmuro, get on it!

The posters play with the whole vision concept as they cover each other’s eyes in turn. From the description and promos, it looks like this won’t necessarily be tragic melodrama (as in, death, disease, and gnashing of teeth), but I think it’s fair to expect it to come at us full-on with the melodrama.

Only You plans to release in theaters later this year.

Wasn't My Sassy Girl a messed up heroine and a cheerful guy?

I would say Cinderella's Sister attempted the pessimist heroine and optimist hero, don't you think? ;)

But anyways, I'm definitely looking forward to the movie trailer!

Pessimistic heroine - check. But the optimistic hero turned into a weepy douchebag after just a few eps.

how about that movie 슈퍼맨이었던 사나이 (a man who was superman)with hwang jung min. In fact, in Accidental Couple with Hwang Jung Min, he was pretty optimistic and happy.

OMG yes! A pessimistic heroine is what I long for--that's why I was crazy about CS--and then it became so lame. CS became a HUGE disappointment but I couldn't stop watching it--like the way you watch an accident.

I'm worried too; I've been worried since I first heard about this movie. So Ji Sub's movies and dramas always worry me. No wonder he looks so unhappy all the time. If I'm him doing all these worrying movies and dramas, I'd look unhappy too.

Here here for a nihilistic heroine! I mean, we all know that women looooooove to fix their men, albeit purely on the strength of their amazing goodness and self-lessness, but come on. Let's shake things up!

Wouldn't Song Joong-ki be just a perfect hero to emanate purity and goodness at, say Ha Ji-won's jaded ex-cop? Or something similar? Plus, there would be noona-dongsaeng love, which is a Thing right now, so it would compensate! I love it. Get right on that, Chungmuro! I'm waiting for those promo posters!

Required fields are marked *

Yes. Yes. You are a genius. Perfect casting: love Song Joong Ki, love Ha Ji Won, and they would make it so good. And I'd want a 16 to 20 episode drama, not a film.

The reason we rarely see a nihilistic heroine is because when a guy is douchey he's "tortured" and in need of fixing, but when a girl acts the same way she's "bitchy," the whole virgin/whore thing. And you know, women characterize other women as this jut as much as men do. Just check out any of the comments on Vicki--they're hilarious, but also frightening.

Required fields are marked *

So Ji Sub's looking younger! Great stills - they look so pretty together!

"Just once I’d like to see that dynamic flipped — nihilistic heroine paired with an optimistic hero."-- same here! Not that they haven't tried before (i.e. Cinderella's Sister), but we need more examples and more solid attempts at this.

Hi there my dearest Smashingalou!! ;)

How r u? Hope everything's great for you! ;)

I can't agree with you more abt watching this movie because of So Ji Sub and Han Hyo Joo...

I can't agree more with Javabeans abt So Ji Sub's gift/talent/knack for portraying heart-breakingly, soul-crushingly, heart-wrenchingly tortured, tragic and emotional-wreck characters...

I watched Sorry, I Love You, soooo long ago, and yet I still cannot shake off his said portrayal in it...

As always, thank you for this information, Javabeans! ;)

But you know something - there is another image I can't shake off - that of So Ji Sub's heart-breaking tears at the funeral of his best friend, the late Park Yong-ha...
such a tragic death of a talented actor...So Ji Sub looked simply heart-broken at the loss of his best friend...
so reminiscence of his portrayal of similarly tragic characters in his dramas and films...

Love all the comments about the "bad" perm as I agree. I'm very devoted to Sonick (So) and I know he can pull off many images but I don't like the perm to be truthful.

I too would love to see him in something funny (other than Sophie's Choice) as I don't think his character in that movie had that many comical traits.

He has a beautiful face that can portray the most angst of men and he's brilliant at what he does best but for once it would be great to see him happy for 1hr and 30mins (or 20 episodes)!, Though I'll be in the queue like everyone else to see Only You.

Cold, messed up heroine and optimistic, cheerful hero? Take Care of the Young Lady was like that. And then everyone proceeded to call the main character a bitch :/

Anyway Han Hyo-joo excels at playing this type of character. Just watch Brilliant Legacy and Dong Yi. But she's charming and sweet so I like her anyway, lol.

check this interesting video, it's about the same thing in hollywood - tropes vs women: the manic pixie dream girl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqJUxqkcnKA

i wonder if various media (from books to movies) implanted the idea of being the fairy that changes a tortured (usually) jerk into the female psyche (since apparently many women actually love it) or women are by nature vain ego maniacs who believe that they can change the cold blooded man and make him love only them which in turn will fuel their vanity ("oh i'm oh so special to have reached his soft side").

i really see no difference between a cold blooded bitch and a cold blooded bastard, but it is apparently believed that every jerk has a good/kind side to them, whereas every bitch is a bitch to the core. double standards. and may i say, it's our own fault (i mean us women)

looking forward to this though, because of so ji sub

I don't know So Ji Sub's acting, but he will always remind me of PYH they were best friends-

I am really looking forward to the "my pet"-movie... it is more or less like that, with a male lead who is cheerful and slightly ditzy and a female lead who is succesful and serious. At least the manga and the Japanese drama were like that.

ps. First post... have spent the last few weeks reading all posts from 2007 (Coffee Prince) till now.... really enjoyed reading the recaps since it reminded me of the time I was watching them myself :)

Thank you! You have a new fan :)

One of these days, please please So Ji Sup, make a romcom drama. Miss watching your shows, but I'm getting tired of melodramas.
