Another idol joins Jang Geun-seok’s Love Rain

What is this, Idol Rain? Another pop singer joins the cast of the drama Love Rain, and this time it’s Seo In-gook, a newish singer who won the TV reality competition show Superstar K in 2009.

Seo In-gook will play one of a trio of university students in the 1970s portion of the drama, with buddies Jang Geun-seok and Kim Shi-hoo. His character is a law student who rules the music cafe C’est La Vie.

Look, I know Jang Geun-seok did a gut-bustingly hilarious job portraying an idol in You’re Beautiful, but I thought a period melodrama about a generation-spanning pure love story would sort of be reserved for, you know, actors.

To be fair, not all idols are bad actors. I’m not against idols in general. I do find it a crying shame when wooden idols with no acting affinity pluck roles away from promising newbies, but I’m happy to see one break free from the “idol prejudice” and do a great job. But Jang Geun-seok is so much better when he’s playing opposite people as good as himself, and you’ve already muddied the casting pool with Yoon-ah. (So dull.) And Love Rain is a full-on melodrama, not a fluffy rom-com with a huge supporting cast that allows for idols to pop in and out of the background (see: It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl, You’ve Fallen For Me, High Kick, All My Love…).

SIGH. *Shakes fist ineffectually*

Love Rain will air sometime in early 2012.

I can only think of a couple of good to great idol actors... Yoona and this guy are not on that list.

Was Eunjung not avaiable? :( I really wanted to see JGS with a strong female lead... sigh. I'll cross my fingers, but I won't get my hopes up.

'this guy" oh, you mean, the awesome Seo In Guk? who literally was the only life in that dud of a kdrama called Love Rain. Who, without any prior acting training just went and did it coz he passed the auditions. they won't cast him if they think he would tank, you know.

Thanks you for the information, JB. Can't say much, just wait and see for the result. Who knows the drama will turn to musical from melodrama. That is why the PD needs many idols to cover the musical element, if there is such thing in it.

i don't know how this drama is going to be.. but i was so hoping for a better supporting cast to feed off the greatness that is JGS.

oh well.. guess will just have to wait for the first ep.

I don't think I'll watch this anymore. There are certain dramas which can be starting grounds for idol wanna be actors but for full on dramas, they should cast real actors. And kpop netizens, don't even start with taecyon in cinderella's sister (he was barely there and just delivered lines in satoori) or dream high (which was basically idols playing themselves). So disappointing specially if you consider the precious dramas made by this director.

Seo In Guk is an "idol"? Since when? I don't think he's ever, for lack of a better word, advertised himself as an "idol" nor do I think he's ever been referred to as one. Has he??

As for the drama, I'm sorry to disappoint people, but I haven't gotten into the JGS bandwagon and I don't think I ever will, so that means I won't watch it. Maybe I'll watch it for Seo In Guk, but that's a HUGE maybe.

Yeah, Seo In-guk continues to be considered as the Superstar K (?) winner, although he was also loved for a while too due to his being a member of the QoM Choir. But yeah, I don't know if he's ever been called an idol. K-pop star yes. Idol? Hmmmmm. Tricky.

sure, he sings pop music, but the word "idol" usually has attached stigmata of pretty faces and ear-scratching vocals. being the superstar k winner, seo in guk's got real pipes on him. just because he doesn't sing ballads doesn't mean he's an idol!

That very visible and defining line that used to divide actors/actresses from singers has become fuzzy no thanks to "idols." Sometimes I wish they would just stick with one career until they're "good" at it before they move on to the next. I mean they train for YEARS before they debut as "idols" who sing and dance and now they're actors/actresses?? Where did all that training to become a singer go??

On another note, and you wonder why they always look so tired or if their schedules are so packed...smh

Required fields are marked *

lol stop
there is a very defined line for actors/actresses and singers and then there are idols. Idols are a whole different entity in the entertainment industry. they're trained to do EVERYTHING, thus you get different levels of talent in singing, dancing, acting, MCing, etc. Idols are not necessarily meant to stay in one aspect of the entertainment industry.

It's too bad we can't petition to have those idol-wanna-be- actors removed from this drama. I honestly don't like idol-actors because they take away roles from people who have spent years practicing and studying to become actors and actresses. The fact that some of the idols can't even sing makes it even worse. It's a pity that it starting to seem like the up and coming actors and actresses need to pursue a music career before they start acting. I prefer that the two kept separate. Idols should just sing their hearts out first before starting their acting careers. My apologies for the rant. I just needed to get it out there.

I totally agree.. I HATE that people who are actually super talented are turned away and work so hard to get their break... Which I don't even understand as a decision on the part of a production team... Are they just counting on idol fan bases to carry over or something? Do they think that audiences don't appreciate real actors??? jeez... >.>

I have to say that idols have to work just as hard for their money as anyone else. It's a dog-eat-dog world they've sold their body, souls, blood and sweat to, so I believe they deserve a chance like anyone else. So I'm not against them breaking into the acting world, which is something I've said before. But.... But but but. I really do wish that the people who decide on the casts would actually make said idols audition and pit them against other real actors. And if real actors trumps said idols, than give the job to the person who has the talent and deserves the role. Stop paying casting producers (or whatever these people are called) under the table (that's an assumption.... but it's not unlikely) and let your idols earn their roles if they have the talent. If they don't, than please IDOL OWNERS, just give up.

^this.

This has actually publicly been said before, but some of the idols have actually started out as actors. But since the idol machine is a better promotional method and a safer jump-off point, they choose to debut as an idol and then branch off into acting.

So, similar to the beginnings of many actors, they (some) actually recieved training as actors.

There's nothing wrong with being multi-talented; but, like Ani said, they ~should~ be TALENTED and not the product of production company interests.

I have nothing against idols who can act, just as I have nothing against actors who can sing - and I definitely agree with the have them audition thing. It's just frustrating because it doesn't appear that they're being cast on the merits of their acting... I don't know about this guy, but from what I've heard, few people have liked Yoona's acting before...

Spring-is the one i least connected but then i love HHJ.

But this , sigh , I dont really expect this type of casting at all. I expect real actors and actress .. actually I really miss Park Yong Ha , someone like him , take out the feeling in you .or Hyun Bin..I am okay with JGS ,love him in YAB but not sure about him in melodrama. But then Yoona ... is nothing to do with judging it too early , is sometime somehow you just know it will not go any where ...(If you watch YAMD , there are times I feel embarrash just look at her acting)

I don't know what people have against idols becoming actors. Yes some of them suck, but alot of newbie actors (and some experienced ones) suck as well. Furthermore some of them never intended to be singers, but just became idols to help advance their career. Examples are Hyomin and Eunjung from T-Ara. Eunjung has been acting for years before her debut with T-Ara, and Hyomin originally started out wanting to be a musical actress.

0

Required fields are marked *

I think Eunjung is fantastic and shows a lot of potential. At this point being an idol is just holding her back... but debuting as a idol is a much easier way to get into the acting biz. I love Eunjung in T-ara, but I can't wait for her to break free and focus solely on acting. I would have been really excited about this if she was the lead, but with Yoona... eh nevermind.

Hyomin... well I think she should stick with just singing. I always say just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Eunjung I would agree. She started out as a child actress and trained as one, together with Jiyeon. These two are the most credible actresses out of their group (only but 2 other T-ara members have yet to try it).

Hyomin, on the other hand, was primarily a famous ulzzang before debut. As of now, her acting is still so-so. Sometimes she really comes off as awkward when I see her in Gyebaek.

I think there's a common misconception among drama fans when it comes to idols, how they don't work as hard, how they have everything laid out for them to take, how undeserving they are yada yada yada. At the end of the day both idols and actors suffer from the same disappointments, same setbacks, and everything that can hinder them in the k-ent... I wish more fans would understand that instead of just blindly hating on idols getting roles.

Now I really wish they quickly film this and put it on the airwave and do it fast and quick... get it over so that I can anticipate other dramas... The longer they drag, I feel pain! It feels more draggy than a 2 generation romance story. Or is it 3? hopefully next summer crops of dramas will be more uplifting.

Ugh....painful... beginning to lose interest.

the synopsis of the "Love Rain" looks promising...but i'm beginning to lose interest... apparently the plan is really for kpop and just invite one or two real actors and actresses.

there seem to be no room for real kactors and kactresses in today's kdramas. kpop are now given priority and its a torture watching most of them transform into acting robots - it is more worthwhile to watch cartoons.

Real actors and actresses (especially those in the age range of 20 to 28+) seem to have a small window of opportunity to be casted in kdrama, regardless of how good they are, a kpop idol is now given priority.

I think they should start thinking of earning a university degree (like what Park Shin Hye is doing).

I agreed with you....seems like more real actor/actress find that this career can't last long (from one of the interview with a popular actress).

If you watched "Minho(Shinee) and Joong Ki Talk Battle" from youtube, actors don't have much chances to fly around in private jet, meet over thousand fans and actors are paid even lower than a dog.

Not many actor/actress able to sing to get more fans...I really pity them. I rather they get a degree non related to acting or singing.

It's pretty sad how idols rule Korea's media. I mean, they are everywhere! Its crazy how every other drama that comes out there's an idol who's casted. Most of the time theyre not even casted based on merit but popularity. I understand its a ratings war, but still I'm shocked none of the "real" working actors as well as rookie actors aren't complaining.

Agree....just too many of them and they just straight away get a supporting actor/actress just because of their fans' request to some production team from some drama. Throughout the drama, their facial expression is like a piece of wood. Just because of their "six pax" or "beauty"??

In the first place why korean ent. need child actors/actresses???

Still prefer to see him acting with senior actors/actress so he can get a serious, tough guy role and not singing/feminine role again. Hope he can be the next Won Bin and not Rain....Different path.

Actually Jessica from snsd can act...I saw her acting fill with emotion/tears in one of the show when others jaws dropped.
