Haha. First time I've listened to one of your podcasts and it was seriously funny.
As for your question: I honestly don't think the jokes in kdramas are even half as funny to us as they are to you, because if we don't speak the language and aren't familiar with the cultural background there's of course lots of things we might not understand or "get" the same way you do. That doesn't mean the jokes aren't funny, sometimes even without further explanations from you or the other translaters, but we fail to really grasp the deeper meaning of the words if we don't speak the language ourselves.
For example, and I know it's probably a bad example but it's the only one that comes to mind right now: I've started watching kdramas roughly a year ago, and really in 9 out of 10 dramas you hear one of the characters say: "Don't speak like that to me!" And everytime I was confused (there was no explaining note from the translators), because the other person didn't curse, didn't say anything bad at all, so I always wondered what that was about. I didn't know about the polite speech with the "-yo" at the end of a word or the impolite speech without it (until about two months ago when I accidently found your blog with a comment about it), because I can't speak Korean.
It's the same for me with the English language, since it's not my first language I used to not get a lot of the jokes in books/watching movies which originally were in English but had been translated into my own language. Especially wordplays usually don't make sense when translated. Luckily I learned English at school so I now actually prefer reading books/watch movies in English when they're orginally from an English speaking country because it's easier to understand the jokes and the context they are put in.
So, I'm really grateful that you make the effort to explain some of the jokes to us which we wouldn't understand otherwise. We or I, at least, surely don't always completely get all of the jokes, but by learning a little more about Korean culture and with the help of the background information you provide the jokes usually crack me up as well after watching the scene a second time... ;)
Well, to be completely honest, I still don't think the joke about butthole-Dokko Jin is funny... But that's just me, I guess. :D

The jokes in Korean are kind of lost on me, which make Hong sister dramas a little less enjoyable than they should be. That's not to say I don't love them to bits, but I notice that even when I have the funny explained to me, it's an obligatory laugh than a real laugh.

But like another commentator said, the other non-language related funny moments do cover up a lot of the language jokes for me :D

I have thinking of listening to a podcast, it happened to be today. And guess what - it was crazy and I loved it. You guys drunk and stuff was really cool. I enjoyed it almost all the time - specially when you got off the tracks and started talking about everything. And you guys were really cute at some moments.

About not understanding the language and finding it less funny - yeah, I think this is true. Language is certainly powerful and when translating Korean to English, a lot of fun and pun goes unnoticed. But then if you remember the equivalent/similar phrase or pun in your tongue, it does sound funny.

On 'Lie to Me' : I couldn't agree more. I think I wasted my time. I had really high expectation with the actors being so good and experienced. I thought of giving up this drama in the middle but then there is this thing[illogically stupid] that once I start a drama, I have to see it till the end.

And yeah, girlfriday was much more sober.

Metaphor babies c/o the Hong sisters! Yeah! I loved that these writers are able to create their own language/vernacular through the metaphors that they built in into their narrative, as GF said, because watching BL gave me first-hand lesson on said language. I've entered their world so to speak. I wish you could feature here in DB more profiles/articles on the kdrama writers esp the Hong sisters. They are amazing!

I remember that Kiss MV!!! Me and My sisters use to watch it all the time!!!! The premise of the Video was, the dude was a photographer and she was a hairdresser. They met one day when he spotted her... somewhere... and then the meet again when he came in to the salon that she worked at.They date for a while, and then one day he asks her to go grab something for him on the shelf in his film develop room. She goes and tries to get it off the shelf but then a bottle of film solution or something falls, pouring all over her eyes.... Then the whole eye exchange thing....

can't wait for Part 2, if Miss Ripley is on it..

i was laughing so much when you guys were relaying the storylines of those epic music videos. so much angst over eyes? it just sounds so ridiculous!!

about best love and the jokes, it's definitely harder to appreciate the hong sisters' sharp wit, simply because you don't fully understand how the pun works in the korean language, or how the particular phrase is a colloquial expression/idiom for smth. depending on the quality of the subtitles, sometimes they explain the puns briefly, sometimes they don't, so it's hard to wrap your mind around it while watching, just b/c it's not a joke i automatically laugh at; i need some explaining to get it, so it's like, "oh, so that's why it's funny." but the moment has already passed. that's why i always go here for the recaps, b/c i know you gals love to dissect the metaphors and puns. if i missed a joke or a particularly swoon-worthy statement, i know to come here to fully understand it. best love was still a fantastically funny drama, if only for cha seung won's crazy antics XD. but i think it's much easier to appreciate the hong sisters' brilliance if you know korean well.

The thing is about Hong Sister jokes and meta is that you often realize the meta after the fact...

I was examining potatoes after Best Love ended and then I realized charger+potato. OMG, potatoes were used as batteries. Who is the potato? And then the revelation hit me. That's why she's his charger... which just made my heart pang that I missed the drama that much more.

Hong Sisters also seem to be layering in international jokes as well. There are oblique references to Japanese dramas, TW dramas (Hong Gil Dong took a few swipes) and the Hollywood industry. What's fantastic about them is that they not only show their love for dramas, but stories in general. You can feel them revel in it.

As for Korean language jokes, since my Korean isn't 100% proficient, I tend to get them on a time delay, once I turn off the subs I've read.

Just curious, but are you girls going to check out the Japanese version of YAB? I feel wary without the Hong Sisters writing in their meta....

lie to me was an epic fail of a drama. you guys rock!

Dal Ja's Spring Balanced the workplace drama and romance better. So it's not boring but fun. It was also less repetitive and more interesting cus it had more layers.

Honestly guys I did not really find best love funny.. Maybe, I did not get the metaphors and the jokes because as you pointed out they got lost in translation

I think plenty of the humor in Hong sister's drama translates perfectly fine without knowing the language, but that's one of the main reasons I read recaps here. Even now that I've watched enough Korean shows to understand the more common tropes and shorthands, there will always be some things that don't translate directly and need further explanation. JB and GF do an excellent job of giving the cultural and linguistic context in those situations. I find that the guest recappers almost never do, and so I don't read recaps by anyone else anymore. I think they're probably fine if you aren't watching the episodes yourself and just want to know what happen, but they tend to be missing the extra layers of information that GF and JB provide.

I will also say that in cases where I like a show enough to watch it more than once, I really appreciate the extra information I get from dramabeans. Jokes that I didn't fully understand on the first watch were clarified in the recaps, so I can appreciate them during my second viewing.

YES the language thing annoyed me at first when i started dramas but ive watched somany dramas it doesnt bother me ...... the whole banmal and jondo (sorry if its rong hear) i kinda cant tell when and where the difference is until one of the characters brings it up.
