Dream High 2 begins pre-production

Dream High Season 2 is ready to begin pre-production work, according to a source with the production company, who’s aiming to broadcast the sequel next January. While airdates are always flexible, the producers are in a good position, having already concluded scheduling talks with KBS and getting their agreement.

Currently they’re in scriptwriting mode, and plan to begin casting after they’re done with scripts. (The drama previously announced a reality show to follow the audition process for the background cast; no updates on that at the moment, but I’m assuming that’s still a go.)

I presume they mean they’ll cast after completing the pilot script, not all the episodes, although how fabulous would it be to have this drama totally pre-planned? Dramas that are 100% pre-produced haven’t historically had the most success with audiences, but this is a case where it could really work, since they’ve already proven their ability to construct a heart-tugging narrative and carry it through effectively. On the flipside of that coin, this IS also an idol drama, so I can see the push for live-shooting as well, to best cater to fan responses.

According to the production rep, they haven’t totally decided whether to extend the story established in Season 1, or whether to build an entirely new story, and are considering all possibilities. Personally, I’d LOVE if they kept Kirin alive, and just rotated out the student stories. That maximizes the world already established, brings back some favorite characters (Jin-man! Oh-hyuk! Kyung-jin!), and also frees them up to swap in busy idols who would have difficulty committing to more than one season. Other K-dramas have attempted the season format but none have been truly successful, or true sequels, either — but maybe what Korea really needs is one great high school serial. Chop-chop, I’m waiting!

Excited! But hope they have better ensemble dance numbers, and a warmer set.

Yes! The breath clouds were distracting.

All I could think about was how cold the actors were...and then how there should be an Actors' union like the the Actors' Guild in Hollywood and how the industry would probably try to put up roadblocks to prevent a union from forming...and by that time I would lose track of what was being said and have to back up the video stream to read what I missed

many sets were like that during that time... not just DH... (look at like Secret Garden)
well Korea was just really cold this winter.

The main cast would obviously be different, the idols have too many commitments right now to come back to the show...

I sort of agree, but I'll probably end up watching it anyway ^^ As long as they don't recycle the characters, like the same type, just a different name (a former classical singer, blabla~), and as long as Hye-mi's sister isn't the main character XD

I'd like it if they just did a completely new story ^^ KBS could air "What's Up" in the mean time D:

Can't wait! Hope they make it really, really good!
I want Hyemi and SamDong cameos!!
Hyesung and Taec too! (obviously I never saw him as anyone else in that drama >_<) ...I mean Jin-gook!
And of course Jason and Pil-sook! :D
It's fine if they don't extend the previous Season's story. I'll be content with decent-length cameos! Chaebal! ^^

Agree with JB--they better have the same teachers too.

So very excited!! I'm hoping that they can add more dance sequences to this Dream High... There were a lot of sing-offs in the first, but not as many dance-offs. Girlfriday mentioned that a So You Think You Can Dance Korean version would be awesome, and I sincerely hope that this is the direction that the producers take!

I dont know why this news excites me way more than the new on the first drama.....my only condition...have at least one strong actor ala Kim Soo Hyun for the first Season...I higly doubt they might be able to bring back the original cast but am kinda hopeful about the teachers

I wonder who would be in the cast....I think it would be tight if Kahi of After School would be in it as a dance teacher.

AWESOME IDEA. Kahi scares me a little bit too, in a good way. Would make a great, intense teacher.

Sigh. If only Kil Gun was active right now (?), she would pawn everyone. But Kahi is the idol active right now, so she'd fit the teacher role perfectly.

they should try something like Gokusen... it was a hit in Japan and many of the nowadays stars were in early seasons (Oguri Shun, Matsumoto Jun, Kamenashi Kazuya etc)
we'd love to see the adult cast... and changing stories for students in each season
it can be done coz every generation of high-schoolers is different... each one with their own story and own failures and successes and every student is unique

That would be brilliant! I loved Gokusen and the successive seasons were just as big of a hit as the first in Japan. I've always thought of Dream High as a mix between Glee and Gokusen!

Sooooooo excited for this. I would absolutely love a rotating cast series. I've always thought Dream High is like the Korean Glee, and making it into a series would solidify that comparison.

I love this show because it was so well written, heartfelt, and zippy, despite the green leads. I would love it even more if they added a few more real actors to the lead line-up, maybe do a half-half deal, but either way, I just want to see another season of Dream High!

I can't choose because I have a soft spot for both of them since they're still unique in their own way, but I love the similarities! I mean, who doesn't love sudden sing/dance dance battles in a high school setting? That's right, no one. I convinced my manly man brother to watch Glee and now he's addicted...all I have left is to get him into Kdramas, and my life's work will be complete.

woot! Love it that they're early in preparing. Personally I really sensed the not-so-live shoot of Dream High, being it HQ in every scenes; all with its supreme editing. I'd love if it will continue that way.

i think tha they shough have more cameos of hye mi and sam dong but they should also have the hye sung and jin gook line, that wasnt completely done but i think it could work if they wrote it really well!! I am a complete fan of teacyeon and think that jin gook and hye sung should have their own seperate story line...dont think it work as the main story though, for some reason i dont see it working...

I think a rotating cast would be cool. New students with new problems and we might be able to get some the old cast to make a cameo. Like pilSuk and Jason popping in to see their former teachers or to ask for help or just to look around and remember all the fun they had.

I think a rotating cast would be great. New cast new stories. And the old cast can make a cameo! It would be fun and you can get some new teachers too. Awesome.
I can't wait to see where they plan to take this. Even though i love the old cast their story might get kinda boring cause we know what happens to them in the future. Therefore a brand new cast with new dreams would be great.

Except I get how both stories are really different, but it'd be nice to have a series of stories about students starting from the bottom, but growing up and getting closer to their dream.

I can't believe how many people expect the original cast. That would actually surprise me even more. Idols are really busy... it'd be pretty difficult to get all of the original cast to all have clear schedules at the same time...

We need a series of students growing up in that heart tugging away. Enough with adults and their melodramas!

I'd like the S1 characters to make cameos!
And Kahee as dance teacher that would be super nice!

Yeah, they should definitely have a new cast. The best idea would be to have it revolve around Hyesuk, or have her be the supporting character that bridges the first series with the new one.

I think the series ended perfectly. We learned the fates of the characters and it should be enough fan service to have them pop in for an episode or two or even have them merely be mentioned in showbiz reports and the like.
