Cha Seung-won in Best Love

Finally, it’s Cha Seung-won’s turn for the spotlight for his new drama, Best Love, the Hong sisters project that stars him as a famous actor.
He’s still sporting the facial hair (sigh), but it’s a much tidier version than the look he wore for Athena, which practically had a lifeforce of its own. Cha’s character is Dokko Jin (yes, Dokko is a Korean surname, albeit an uncommon one), a star much beloved by the public, which means he’s the polar opposite to his love interest, who’s dogged by a more negative reputation. It also means that Cha is working with a more clean-cut image than his badass one of recent years.
In the stills directly below, Jin is at the office of his agency, and goes through a speed quiz over the phone with Ae-jung, the former idol star with a bad image played by Gong Hyo-jin. It’s reportedly an important scene connecting Episodes 1 and 2, and given the Hong sisters’ love of outrageous setups and comic gags, no doubt the scene’ll end with a kicker.
The Hongs have written six hit shows in six years, so they’ve earned the audience’s trust that they’ll deliver a solid mix of laughs, parodies, and romantic chemistry between their leads. I have faith that they’ll bring the funny, just as I trust Cha and Gong to deliver winning characters; now, I just hope the writers can work on maximizing their strong supporting cast too, since they’ve got Yoo Inna (Secret Garden) and Yoon Kye-sang (Who Are You) to work with.
Best Love premieres on May 4 on MBC.

yeah, like it too. I think it suits him. I like his face more now than during his Bodyguard days. I think it makes him more sexy =) and kinda cute when he smiles like that (pic 3&4)

agree with you on that one. he looks more 'macho' with the facial hair. and it frames his face. as long as he keeps it tidy and sparse.
i am so looking forward to this role where he's not playing someone mean. i wonder how he'll execute that. the moustache and goatee/beard makes him look mean.

There's a lot of guys that I think rock the 'stache (namely, that guy from Norazo and the rapper Nassun). Cha Seung-won is hot either way but I think it balances out his face...

With or without I like his facial hair. Makes him more in character depending on the role. So Im really glad the facial hair is softer here as I really want to see this Korean equivalent to a greek god be in a lighter role like in City Hall. It's not so much about how good or not he looks with the hair to me- it's more about the fact that his image has remained pretty much stagnant for the last however many years. It's like he thinks people won't recognize him without it and is too scared to take it off.
I mean, it's not like going bald or something - i personally like being able to see a person's face in completeness, at least once in a few years

His haircut. . . Is it me, or does it resemble a mohawk, albeit, a tame version? He does, it's shaved on the side. Eun Ji-won can pull off that look because, well, it just looks good on him, and it fits his hip hop look. On Cha, it just looks weird, at least his right side (our left) looks weird. . . But who cares? His mustache and beard is tame and we're getting closer to being able to watch this show. So YAY!

Nevermind. I was watching Oh! My School (100 Points Out of 100) and saw that Jongmin has it too. My conclusion? It's probably a growing trend for cuts to shave the sides to a point of it being noticed.

Triple was an awful drama. I couldn't finish it even though I was super excited about many of my fav actors in it. Who Are You? is a much better reference to give.

Agree. It seemed really good on paper. Lee jung jae + lee seon kyun + yoon kye sang + lee hana. Doesn't sound bad at all. But yoon kye sang's character was stalker-ish, lee hana's character a total energy suck (which was a shame since she was so energetic and likable in Alone in Love), and the story went nowhere. Triple was possibly my biggest disappointment that year.

I liked YKS in Who Are You, Crazy For You and My Sis-In Law is 19. I was so looking forward to Triple mostly because of him but it was a big let-down. I didn't even bother to finish it. One of the few dramas I invested in more than halfway and decided not to finish.
I just wish YKS gets a starrign role in n=his next drama. He is so versatile, I think. And he emotes with just his facial expression.
I skipped Road Number One as I'm not into war dramas.

Wahhh thank you for mentioning My Sister-In-Law is 19. That drama is <3...but so underrated. =( And especially now with Jung Da Bin gone...I find it hard to re-watch it.
Anyways, I totally agree the YKS needs a starring role. I'm waiting for him to break out....hopefully the Hong Sisters use him wisely. It'd be a shame if he were wasted....AGAIN ::coughRoadnumber1coughcoughCOUGH::

WHY YOON KYE SANG IS ONLY IN SUPPORTING ROLE?! I honestly have never seen a single drama/movie with Cha Seung Won and can't judge him. But I saw Yoon Kye Sang, and think he is a wonderful actor. Gong Hyo Jin is one of my the most favorite and respected Korean actresses, and i think together they will have a great chemistry.
I am happy Hong sisters chose mature and skillful actors for their next drama. Although I enjoyed all their dramas, I can see how Gong Hyo Jin will show some great plau XD

CSW is much better actor than YKS believe me. But that doesn't mean YKS should've taken the second lead role. She has taken 3 second lead roles since he came back from army, Tripple, Road no 1 & this. And all 3 of them has A-List actors as the leads so I guess it's OK. maybe he wanted to work and learn from them.

I love seeing him smile instead of smirk! This should be a lot of fun.....he's good at comedy. See Kick the Moon and Ghost House. He was a little chubbier then, but if you look at the recent trend for men (skiiiinny), or flex'n green hulk look'n abs, most of the older ones look chubbier in their past films/dramas.

Oh man... I really hope so with the recaps as I really admire JB/GF work so it will be extra special with their input. Yeah sexy Mr Dokko! That's catchy...will definitely be attracting questions marks with my friends with that ! lol only the 'inner circle' will understand eh?

the set looks to me a bit of Foxy Hunter lair (c'mon the black curtains are exactly the same ) or the apartment's decor
not even counting that the Foxy ahjussi looks so smexy ( I love his D'Artagnan-esque facial hair )
I loved how Hong Sisters made Park Dong Ju - and I hope they will give it to me with a garnish of main lead and CSW perfume (version 2.0 with spectacular enchantments )

I guess it could be he is wired to work all the time, and wouldn't spend his down town sleeping anyway, still...

i wish they had cast an up and coming actor. Look at ALL the lead guys in their previous shows, from Lee Dong Wook, to Jae Hee, to even Lee seung Gi. ALL OF THEM were pretty much rookies at acting but EXPLODED after their hong sisters show. (well maybe except kang ji hwan, but he wasnt as popular until after hong gil dong)
Cha seung won has already been popular during his younger days, and just seems to lack that "freshness" that would have made this drama so much more exciting. *sighs*

Lee Seung-gi was a super popular singer before Gumiho. He had also done Brilliant Legacy, which was really popular as well (averaged about 30% in ratings). I think Shin Min-Ah benefitted the most from that particular drama by getting a bunch of CF deals.
I agree that with their reputation, they have the power to launch careers and should do so, but I think it'll be interesting to see them work with veterans as leads - it might give the drama a different quality from their other work. isn't this the first time they've had lead characters who are past their twenties?

This is totally irrelevant but I notice that a lot of guys who are balding or bald actually have a lot of facial hair on other parts of their bodies like the chest. Like my friend's husband who is really bald has got a forest of thick and lush hair on his chest. He likes to walk around shirtless on hot days, that's how I know. That's the truth, cross my heart.

Gosh all I see is City Hall senator..lol
He still has his City Hall character feel going on. I think it's because of the facial hair..but i'm so looking forward to him taking up a role so different from his badass ones.
Though i do love the badass roles because that's what made me a fan but something different would be awesome &show that he is indeed a versatile actor.

Thanks Jomo. I just wanna know how they rate City Hall, Dramabeans didn't recap let say PP or QoR but they rate it, and they say that they only rate drama that they've seen in their entirety. So since I'm crazy about City Hall,
I just wonder whether they didn't see it? didn't finish it? got bored? Got bored of Cha Seung-won?

My total guess is that samsooki did a very complete job on both the recaps and the review that even though JB/GF saw it, there was no reason to do their own rating.
They had nothing to add.
Their silence is a tacit agreement.

Uhmm, I'm pretty sure javabeans did not finish watching "City Hall". She did write a bit about the first few episodes, but not recaps proper, if I'm not mistaken.
