Secret Garden to be remade into radio drama

Looks like popular culture is just not going to let Secret Garden go: Next up is a “radio drama” of the popular melo-fantasy-trendy series. Last we’d heard, talks were being held regarding producing a movie version, a musical, and a potential sequel TV series — as well as the publication of a manhwa and novel — but a radio drama? That’s new.

The Secret Garden radio drama will broadcast on SBS Radio Love FM in 16 episodes. While the announcement cites fresh additional material, it sounds like it’s really a glorified audiobook, since the project boasts the original voices and dialogue of the actors — Hyun Bin, Ha Ji-won, Yoon Sang-hyun, Kim Sarang — and we are very aware that one of those dudes is well out of the picture for the foreseeable future. However, the radio product will introduce new narration to string together the story and offer additional insights to the scenes, voiced by Ra-im’s dad (actor Jung In-ki).

The radio version begins airing (on 103.5 in Korea) on April 9 and will put out a new episode every Saturday and Sunday, wrapping in late May.

This is the first time a television show is getting the remake treatment for radio, thereby proving that while video may have killed the radio star, it also possesses the power to drag it back from the afterlife, like a vampire making a new, related, but yes, also warped version of itself in the new creation. Sigh. Whatever happened to letting a beloved work gracefully step back from the spotlight after its time came to an end, to be fondly recalled in the memories of all those who loved it? Yeesh, Korea, let ‘er go. Just… let her go.

Not just why but how?!

How are they going to translate the one in the other's body thing effectively in audio?

Shouldn't a "radio drama" have a good story line and more importantly, great dialogue (fun, witty, etc.)?

If the script for the radio adaptation is going to hew closely to that of the drama, I can't see how it could succeed.

SG was big largely due to its hype and the draw power of its 2 leads (esp. HB); which made up for its less than memorable story and dialogue.

I say good luck w/o the star power or a better script.

"SG was big largely due to its hype and the draw power of its 2 leads (esp. HB); which made up for its less than memorable story and dialogue."

Yeah, a radio show version of SG just wouldn't work, because all the insults and narcissistic arrogance would not fly without Binnie and his awesome tracksuit.

Even w/ HB, the insults, etc. in SG were more shrill than fun, unlike say, in "My Princess."

Lol… not Hollywood pls coz they tend to kill the glamorous feeling I had with the original movie/drama. They may have the best out there but in making versions, never trust them.

…SG, oh yes pls let it go… I’m still in my medication and this is not helping! Aish!

Maybe an official K Marine version starring Kim Tae Pyung? I think I've seen more pictures of him since he joined the military than before (all official of course)

This might just be the most hilarious thing I've read all week.

Somehow I have the feeling that the body-swapping will be a LOT less hilarious in just audio...what next? Secret Garden pogs?

Agreed. How're they gonna make it even half as awesome without the visual for the body swap??

I'm thinking they'll bring out special Secret Garden 'body swap' wine some time soon the rate their going...

I agree with you and JB. Please just let it go. All the casts have moved on to other roles, too and the viewers are ready to move on as well. Did they not get the hint when they had to cancel the second concert due to low tickets sale?

Required fields are marked *

I agree, too.

Unfortunately, I don't think the powers-that-be will stop milking SG as long as they can see lots of dollar signs rising from it. In the end, it's only going to cast a negative light on what was a very successful(and for many of us, a hugely enjoyable) drama, and leave a bad taste in people's mouths.

Enough, already. Please.

I HEARTILY agree with the " Whatever happened to letting a beloved work gracefully step back from the spotlight after its time came to an end, to be fondly recalled in the memories of all those who loved it? Yeesh, Korea, let ‘er go. Just… let her go." ;)

As much as I LOVED Secret Garden, i think a radio show is a bit much. next thing you know they're gonna be making secret garden stores and theme parks (but I doubt it'd get to that point...I think)

This made me think about how Kim Sun-ah found it hard to come back after My Name is Kim Sam-soon, because every time she thought it was time to bounce back, they would show over and over again (they even did reruns 3 years after it had originally run). Kim Sun-ah said no matter how much she tried to come back, it was getting harder to lose weight and harder to find projects and she eventually sunk into the bottle. Great though that she came back fighting.

Korea (or the Korean entertainment/business industry) sure has a hard time letting go of something popular. But that's capitalism for you, you go where the moola is.

Wow I didn't know that about KSA. It's hard to be too popular too, I guess. I hope we see a new project from her soon, I miss her!

Didn't know about it too. But re-run is okay I guess, I love re-run of a good drama. Then again KSA hit another jackpot with City Hall, and for me as much as I love MNIKSS, City Hall is my numero uno kdrama. And ever since I heard CSW is going to be in Hong Sisters drama all I can think of is this-jawdroppingly-beautiful-man

June couldn't come any sooner

btw: @Ani thanks for mentioning KSA so I have an excuse to post CSW pic

Yeah, she even spoke freely about how she started drinking a lot. She even had to deal with messed up psychos making a porn video with an actor that looked like Kim Sun-ah and saying it was her. That haunted her for a while too. Kim Sun-ah HWAITING~

@omo You're right. Although City Hall didn't make the jaw dropping ratings MNIKSS did, but it still was a hit and was the comeback she needed. As for the CSW picture: nice bod, but lung disease is never attractive to me. Can't wait for the Hong Sisters' new drama too.

I really, really, REALLY love Secret Garden...but with a radio drama, it looks like they are just trying to make money outta it...

but I guess this is just something special about Korean dramas...so if you don't like letting go of stuff, go for K-dramas! I don't mind not letting go sometimes, so this is totally cool.

Poor HB...

To be or not to be ?

To be too popular..... will invariably bring nausea to some.

To be unpopular..... will eventually sound the death knell to your career.

So be wise, dear HB..... be just slightly popular, don't have a whole fandom behind you, don't be too charming.

Just do more of dramas/movies the likes of Friend, Our Legend, Come rain,Come shine........

Agreed. I think of it like a nice steady camp fire, not something that will whimper out nor something so fierce that it consumes too much too quickly. If only popularity is something that can be turned up and down like a predictable stove.

LOL. I love SG a lot that I keep replaying the OST for a while, but even Sung SiKyung, Baek Ji Young and 4men's voices can't keep me treading on that path for too long.

I love the parodies, though. But yeah, let it die a natural death please.

The only way to let it die is that Korea could just come out with another fanworthy crackalicious but better drama with better plot with equally great cast with another name (Sausage Garden...LOL...not that please)...and then here we go again. ;)
