Allure’s shoot with the cast of The Duo

Here are a few pretty shots released from the currently airing action-sageuk drama The Duo, whose three lead stars are featured in character for April’s Allure Korea magazine.

Above, Chun Jung-myung poses as his born-rich-raised-poor character Chun-dong, who, despite his obvious adorableness as a baby-faced cutie, is reportedly not performing so well in his first sageuk endeavor. From what little I’ve seen, I can concur; there’s just something so awkward about him in The Duo, despite my wanting to like his role. Oh, well, Chun Jung-myung — we’ll always have What’s Up Fox. And Goodbye Solo.

One source from the shoot explained, “In the drama, Chun-dong is about to encounter a lot of action scenes, so whenever Chun Jung-myung has some time, he practices his martial arts.”

Lee Sang-yoon, below, plays the lowborn (but swapped into nobility) Gwi-dong, who’s now a police officer. Lee teased at the drama’s future developments, saying, “Gwi-dong finds out about the characters’ switched identities. The plot will get even more interesting in the future.”

No doubt a lot of that interest will be focused around the love triangle whirling around the object of both their affections. In the just-aired 14th episode, Han Ji-hye (playing Dong-nyeo) starts to feel some affection toward Gwi-dong, although she’s already enamored of Chun-dong. I smell complications.

The Duo airs on MBC on Mondays and Tuesdays, and is currently a bit less than halfway through its run; it has aired 14 of a planned 32 episodes.

I have to say, the child actors were better than the adult (in my opinion). I started the drama thinking that I would have to struggle through the first episodes, but actually I'm losing interest now. It's too bad, because I was anticipating a juicy role for Chun Jung Myung after Cinderella's Sister.

I hear you. I found the child cast so much more captivating and interesting, and the adult cast is kind of...meh. Perhaps it doesn't help I prefer Dalyi so much more to Dong-Nyeo!

couldn't agree more. the child actors were so compelling...i miss them!!!! the adult cast is "meh." i really dislike dong nyeo also...she's so elitist. i'm upset she changed into such a snob!! the story line is still pretty interesting so i'm in it for the long haul.

that is exactly how I feel. Her attitude was a little more bearable in the younger years, but now it is just making me hate her. (doesn't help that I just dislike the actress as well :P)
Dal-yi is just streets ahead of this girl! I hope that the story somehow turns out that Dalyi ends up with Chun-doong and Dong-nyeo with Gwi-doong. Then I will be happy.

I am having trouble with all the political stuff, though - I've been watching it on my own and I can understand the everyday stuff, but the polititalk is going over my head most of the time. :(

I totally agree with you about the children acting much better than the adults. The main guy guy don't really know how to act that much. At least in this drama. His actions are just like 'blah'... But I love this drama. It gets interesting and interesting.

I also agree. I miss the children; they were so good and refreshing. I'm really not liking the acting of the adult Dong-nyeo either...it just feels a little flat to me.

But, I'm still loving the series as a whole. Although a part of me is aching to see the teenage actors again.

Go to dramacrazy or mysoju and they have the episodes with English subs. Though I have to agree with the consensus that the show is a bit....boring.

it's better to just ignore other peoples' opinions, go watch it and form your own. just because they find it boring doesn't necessarily mean you will, you know? and if it does turn out to be unbearable then the most you'll have lost is a few hours of your time.

It's a great drama and it's typical of sageuks. The kids are always adorable and endearing, they'll steal your heart and outshine the adults. I thought I couldn't continue watching without them but the show must go on and I find myself warming up to the adult actors as the story developed.
I just watched eps 13 and I'm SO GLAD I didn't quit.

I thought i would love this drama because the child actors were so good but now i have no interest with the adults. Also i wish the pairing would be different too i actually like Dal Yi more. Oh well....:/

I was hoping the adult actors would improve this series for me but I was disappointed.

Maybe Chun Jung-myung was never meant for sageuk. So sad.

I liked the kids too, which I often do in sageuk. But the story took forever to do the simplest things and the English subbing at the site I was using was just awful. I dropped out after 6 episodes. So I guess I'll never see CJM in this, unless it comes back with higher-quality subbing at dramafever or someplace.

surprisingly, i found the kids a whole lot more compelling than the adults. i really wanted to watch it for pie but i think i'm going to drop this one. episode 10 was just so meh. and i am not a fan of han ji-hye's character here. she's such a snob. off to start twinkle twinkle now.

Honestly sageuk and CJM don't mix. I love him so much I could be dazzled by him eating some CF endorsed strange ham but The Duo.....I just tuned out. Hopefully he can go back to Romantic Comedies again....I miss the What's Up Fox days...

I love, love, love CJM too! Since I've watched What's Up Fox. Didn't get to finish Goodbye Solo... got bored around episode 3... Have not gotten round to watching Fashion 70's... Cinderalla's Sister gave me a headache story wise, but I think CJM did what he could with what he was given... in The Duo, the kids were indeed good! I have just finished episode 11, so I haven't really warmed up to the adult characters yet... The story has yet to reveal who (personality wise) they have become. But then I don't know if it's because the eng subs in certain parts were not as helpful at it should have been but still, I admire and thank the subbers for the effort. And yes, i think I'll continue watching.

I've enjoyed watching this drama so far. The story may move a little slowly sometimes, but the characters are so compelling and the women have real personalities and character.

I'm enjoying this drama. The pace seems slow, but it doesn't bore me. I think CJM's character is hard to define, once he became an adult. I'm up to epi 12 and,I'm watching till the end! CJM's acting is good, given the character he has to portray. The adult Dong Nyeo,I'm confused about her personality. could be the acting, but maybe, her character has yet to be fleshed out.

The Duo's a solid drama and a welcome contrast against MBC's run of sageuks -- it kinda follows the lead of Chuno in trying to portray an amoral and gritty slice-of-life panorama, and in Jejoongwon in trying to create a heroic man-of-the-people vibe.

Chung Jung Myun isn't bad here. He's just . . . emo. Chung Doong seems like he should be written as a would-be Iljimae or Sung Baek, but he seems kinda passive aggressive and dull.

Lee Sang Yoon is excellent as Gwi Dong. He has the easiest time with the dialogue, and Gwi Dong seems palpably

I think Han Ji Hye's Han Ji Hye. She instinctively plays up the bitchy, snarky, lecturing aspect of the character, which IS appropriate for Dong Nyeo. It's just that the mix of Dong Nyeo's moody self-regard and Chung Doon's loser boy in love makes for a rather tedious romantic pairing. It hasn't sold.

Personally, I think Duo would be better had the romantic heroine been Dal Yi. Her saucy, gunslinger ways seems written out of an American Western, and she had great chemistry with both guys. The child Dal Yi was the standout among the child actors, but unfortunately I see little of that persona in the adult version.

I so agree with u belleza, Im really rooting for Dal Yi instead of Dong Nyeo, it makes me rather sad that the 2 guys are both enamored with Dong Nyeo's character (come-on guys, what did u see with her?) And somehow, I like the character of Gwi Dong instead of Chun Dong who appeared quiet and boring, unlike Gwi Dong, he's full of life and zest. Oh well since its already halfway of the drama, I will def stay tune to know if the drama will get better since the birth secret is already revealed.

haha it looks like some people rushed to judge this series (me included). First 9 episodes (the ones with the child actors) were so great.Next 4 episodes were also pretty good (the arirang-dance scene from episode 13 was one of the most beautiful scenes yet,it reminded me of 'seopyenoje'.). Then, from ep.13 onwards (some would even say "from ep.10 onwards") , "the duo" started to feel really dull , i was disapointed and i'm sure i was not the only one. I even wanted to abandon the damn thing, that's how bad it was compared with the strong begining, yet i continued watching it using the fastforward button most of the time.
And then, all of the sudden, without any notice, BAM ! From ep. 18 onwards (18 included), the series is one of the best korean sageuks ever made, not only that it started to be good again , but it's even better than the first episodes, i was shocked to see that it got back on track! I'm so happy i continued watching it,i would have lost one beautiful jewel. You guys should do the same, don't stop after 10 episodes ! Although there are a lot of boring episodes after the kids grow up, you will get rewarded after
