Will Pil-sook’s doll be the next Pig-Rabbit?
by javabeans
Well, I’m going to guess it won’t quite reach Pig-Rabbit levels of fandom (or the Sam-soon doll), but there HAS been a bit of interest in the stuffed doll carried around by Pil-sook (IU) in the popular teen drama Dream High.
The doll hasn’t been explicitly mentioned but it’s been a prominent part of Pil-sook’s wardrobe, as she carries it around with her everywhere like a mini security blanket. Apparently it’s meant to resemble Jason (Woo-young) and has been called the “Jason doll,” but I must be really dense because I’ve never picked up on that connection, although in retrospect it does make sense. (Particularly since I haven’t seen her with it in the latest episode, after she loses weight and drops her crush on him.)
Turns out it’s really called a Blabla doll, hand-knitted by Peruvian craftsmen, made of natural fibers, and eco-friendly. They’re pretty pricey specimens (approximately $50 a pop), but I can respect their commitment to fair trade. The brand expanded their reach to the Asia Pacific in 2010 and plans to launch officially in Tokyo in February.
Pil-sook’s is the Otto doll, which you can see on Blabla’s Korean website, http://www.blablaap.co.kr. It may not spur the fervor of other drama paraphernalia (Boys Before Flowers’ star-moon necklace, You’re Beautiful’s hairclip or Pig-Rabbit, or the spiffy cell phones featured in every drama ever), but I admit I wondered at the doll and had a vague inclination that it might spark interest. But who knows, maybe Pil-sook won’t need it anymore now that she’s empowered and self-confident, which is a story turn I love, just ’cause I could stand to see Jason suffer a little. He’s a nice guy, but just so assured and privileged that he could benefit from a little character-building. Heh.

"hand-knitted by Peruvian craftsmen" -- for a second, I expected the next words to be "stitch by stitch"
the doll didn't look that attractive in the drama, but close-up, it's pretty cute. I guess it does look a bit like Wooyoung.

LOL! hand-knitted by Peruvian craftsmen stitch by stitch!!!!!!
If I ever start making a dolls collection of my favorite dramas it would be like this:
1. myoo(cat doll) from Secret Garden.
2. chicken leg from MGIAG.
3. Pig-Rabbit from YB.
4. Samsoon's pig doll from MNKSS.
5. Otto doll from DH
But I think I am too old to start a doll collection, and I am not sure if my daughter will find all of them as cute as I do. As soon as she becomes old enough to start watching dramas I will introduce her to the wonderfull K-drama world, that way we can both start our collection without me feeling embarrassed about it, hehehehe!!!!!

LOL! I was going to post the same thing. "Stitch by stitch" was the first thing I thought of too after reading the hand-knitted part.
I nearly bought YB's pig-rabbit but had second thoughts since I had second thoughts when I saw the price. Maybe it's less expensive now? Anyway, I wouldn't mind getting MiHo's chicken leg or Ra-im's myoo since they're so big and huggable. =)

I'm one of those fan who has been calling that doll the 'jason doll' because of the hair. Doesn't it look like Jason's hair style? Only problem i have with it is that heart shape tatoo on the arm. Is Jason secretly hiding a tatoo? hehe :P
OMG the doll is made in Peru? Need to talk my brother in law in getting me one, he'll be going to peru next month! then again maybe i can knit myself one. Kinda don't want to spend 50 $$ on it.

I had been thinking the doll represented Jason and that's why she always carried it around because there was no other logical explanation in my brain for why Pil-sook was carrying around a doll everywhere. It is pretty cute, now that I get a good look at it.

I thought the same thing...I thought it was supposed to resemble Jason because I couldn't remember her having it before the uniform scene when he came to her rescue or maybe she did have it already? I can't remember.
Now that I think about it since her weight loss, she hasn't been carrying it at all!
I didn't even notice the heart on the arm until I saw the close up picture above!

Actually, I think she had another doll at the beginning of the drama. And, she only changed to the Jason Doll after the skirt incident.
When she was in a quandary about continuing to karaoke or go to practice, I couldn't stop laughing at her beating herself on the head, with the doll.

Sam-soon had a doll?!Wow.
The doll looks cute. The simple face (two dots and a half circle) always make a cute expression, and is eco-friendly!
But besides the doll, I’ve been wondering, where did Pil-sook got the gigantic pink backpack?

JB, you are not the only one, I'm not quite connect with it too until someone mentioned on the net that it's Jason.
So it is a product tie-in? Well, when I saw PS carry it in school I thought it's suppose to look weird for a high school girl, but it turned out to be so adorable and blended in with her character nicely.
Yep, Jason needs to suffer a bit for the better. Man, when he let Sam Dong take his solo dance ,I went O_O and he didn't even fight for what it's rightfully his.

I honestly don't think it will take over the doll thingy like PIGRABBIT doll. I mean that PR doll had a life of it's own....it became more popular after YAB. And also for me despite the flaws of YAB, it is still one of the best drama for me. No drama has yet come close. The popularity that drama brought it's cast so many good projects and amazing popularity. Most especially Jung Yong Hwa. From a nobody to one of the most in demand artist in Korea show business. Pig Rabbit as of now for me is undefeated.

The last thing I followed on kdrama trinket trends was the necklace from Stairway to Heaven.
Yes, I will admit IU holding about anything in her hand will look cute, I think IU is super cute, however I think this Otto doll is intended for voodoo than anything else. I'll pass. If I want to give a toy to a toddler, I'd rather purchase a Fisher Price Ocean Wonders Soothe & Glow Seahorse (http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Ocean-Wonders-Soothe-Seahorse/dp/B000W3XEQM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1296931534&sr=8-1) 'cos it does wonders putting a busy bee toddler asleep. I bought 'em for $9.95 on Black Friday, or else I see 'em now at Target cheaper than Amazon.

"Apparently it’s meant to resemble Jason"
I cracked up when Jason startled Pilsuk which caused her to lose balance, fall on the floor and drop the doll. After he helped her get up, he even picked up the doll for her. :) I was waiting for him to mention the resemblance. :) I guess it's either Jason's a gentleman not to bring up his connection to the doll, or he is unassuming that way.
