I don't know, but we'd better find a solution fast...because once withdrawal really sets in, I know I'll end up in a downward spiral of panic and start frantically searching Youtube for every CF and fan-made MV of my favorite K-Drama actors while desperately trying to avoid watching Coffee Prince and Sam Soon yet again...it's just not pretty, folks. Not pretty at all. @.@

B/C of this thread I rewatched an ep of Coffee Prince. Sheesh...its like I like it more now than when I first saw it. I watched ep. 2 and seeing all the pain Han Sung is in over Yoo Joo made me cry. Yep, this is def one my all-time favs. I really appreciate the shows that stick in your heart.

So after watching Coffee Prince and Pasta for the third time I realized that I enjoy dramas that have romance with no plotting bitch, or conspiring second male lead. Can anyone recommend other shows like that? Hopefully I haven't already seen them all...

Whoa, this is actually a hard question, coz horrible second leads are Kdrama bread and butter!
Off the top of my head:
Sungkyunkwan Scandal: second female lead was annoying at best, but didn't really move into witch territory for me.
It's Okay, Daddy's Girl (there were some scheming non-primary leads, but it wasn't a romance thing)
Paradise Ranch: the second leads are actually nicer than the main leads (at the moment)!
Secret Garden: second female lead starts off being a bit witchy, but does a 180 and it all turns out fine.
Possibly Bad Couple - second female lead was a bit of a witch, but she came off so impotent as to be inoffensive and hung around so little, it didn't move into OMG, KILL HER NOW territory for me.
Hoped that helped a little.

Sungkyunkwan Scandal: conspiring male lead
Okay, daddy's girl: Evil guy framed her father
Paradise Ranch: something shifty about second male lead...just don't know what yet
Secret garden: Evil mother in law...I loved the show though
Bad couple: female lead was the witch in this one, until she realized she was sick...
I guess I'm out of luck

You could try Coffee house with Kang Ji Hwan and Park Shi Yeon... no psycho second leads in there.. I mean the one person who can qualify is just sooo hilarious and is constantly more of a victim due to KJH(the lead's) scheming lol!

Yeah, Coffee House is a fun ride; a bit quirly and wacky, but that's what made it so refreshing compared to the usual...
Like uhhh, "Secret Garden" w/ the stereotypical arrogant Chaebol playboy(s) and the even more stereotypical Chaebol mother/mother-in-law.

OH!!! I just remembered and had to come back in order to suggest this one!!! Mixed up investigation agency/ Evasive Inquiry Agency with Lee min ki... If you have not watched it yet please do so... I absolutely love that drama! It was so my fun to watch and all three leads especially Ye Jiwon is Hee-kyung, were amazingggg!! One of my favorites with no psycho second leads :)

I agree with your choice. No dramatic evil plot whatsoever from the second lead male AND female (i'm pretty much out of luck trying to guess who's the lead after all xD)
so that's fun to watch.. ESPECIALLY after episode 8 *gasping for air*

I really agree with you about enjoying dramas that don't have the plotting bitch/conspiring bastard second female/male lead.
One of the reasons I am not longer totally loving My Princess is that the second female lead makes my blood pressure rise every time she steps on screen. I just hate watching hateful people do whatever they want all the time in kdramas. Why does everyone always give evil people a pass
As for recommendations, I thought the ones informantxgirl mentioned were all great--to add, I would suggest a couple Taiwanese dramas that I watched recently. not sure if you are into them--I wasn't until this past week when I got tired of waiting for the DH finale and became desperate to watch something else that could take my mind off DH.
So the two dramas are
MARS and Black & White, both starring Vic Chou
MARS was awesome. Unlike any drama I have seen before. It is a liveaction version of a manga takes on really tough social issues and left me thinking. It was riveting, troubling and sad yet still had a great ending. (I would LOVE to see a Korean version of this drama but doubt that kdramaland would take it on because some of the mature social themes, which kind of seem taboo in dramas)
Black & White is a cop drama but I loved it and the interactions between the leads were great and the love triangle was really interesting--not traditional at all--kind of like a circular case of one-sided love.
I watched both of these dramas in marathon sessions--they were really good, which was a surprise because I initially didn't think I would like Taiwanese dramas.

Oops--forgot to mention that one of reasons MARS is so great for non-evil second leads, is that the second leads transition from being jealous and entwined in the love-square to being fierce protectors of the main couple. It was really good to see a drama recognize that the second leads don't have to remain irrationally jealous for over 20 episodes but can easily become great people and there are other factors that can drive the plot in a drama

Just want to say Mar is totally awesome... my all time favourite TW drama... vic chou is completely superb in it... and I would also love to Korean version of this drama but it probably will never happen...
Devil besides you is excellent as well.. with very little envy 2nd lead .... this one will be great to have a korean version.... i think...

Black and White is a really good one to start off drama-virgins. The story, the editing, the acting, plot-twists (and the fashion) is ultra-modern.
It can please any international audience.
There is some m/m subtext too - if you wish to see it that way (and I wish it always ;-)
The only drawback is the CSI-lab doctor. I would have liked her character to be more involved in the plot. She was great.

I'll add my vote to Mars and Black & White. Love them both, and Mars is one of my all-time favourite dramas of any language.
For K-dramas without conspiring second leads try The woman who still wants to marry, Capital scandal, New heart, Surgeon Bong Dal Hee, Flowers of my life, Which star are you from (tiny bit of plotting but of the harmless kind), Snow White (Taste sweet love), Dal Ja's Spring, I am Sam, H.I.T., Bad family, When it's at night, Worlds within and Gourmet.
For me the above were all pretty interfering annoyance free and I liked them all, some more than others.

Mars, a must watch, I got sold on Vic Zhou when I watched him in this and totally bummed when the news came out that Barbie and him split up.
Tatta Hitotsu no Koi (Just One Love) one of the best JDramas I have ever watched. There is no bitchy/psycho second leads, just the lead couple, awesome friends and a beautiful love story.

Hm, how about Triple, Dr Champ, or even Playful Kiss? All these shows don't have annoying/bitchy second leads. I really enjoyed Triple because it was so easy to watch and it didn't make my blood pressure rise- you can check out Javabean's recaps or ratings! :)
Other than that I can't think of any other drama that has a Coffee Prince/Pasta feel..

Never watched Triple or Champ, so can't recommend, but Playful Kiss had that smart girl...she wasn't exactly hateful, but she did make the female lead feel about 2 inches tall. That might irk some people. I think I was one of the few people who actually wanted her to win over Oh Ha Ni! :)
Um, Shining Inheritance? I think Seung Mi is the best female second lead ever. She can get hysterical at times, but she's just so pitiful, I can't help but feel a little bad for supporting the main couple.
Did not know it would be this hard to think of a Kdrama that didn't employ a love square with meanies!

February 26, 2011 at 9:21 AM
Although I liked Shinning inheritance, I wanted to jump through the screen and beat up both mother daughter combos. the mother who put her out, and the mother who thought eveyone was beneath her. I just wanted a break from being angry while watching. So far the clear winner is Mars but I can't find it online. Flowers for my life was close, but the death at the end ruins it for me.

The World Within (Hyun Bin character's ex girlfriend isn't that annoying, she's just confused I think)
The man who can't get married (I don't know why, but this drama has special place in my heart. Ji jin-hee character's girl next door, is cute and innocent and best friend of the 1st female lead)
Capital Scandal (hah, the second female lead is awesome)
Coffee House (The secretary is sweet, and the second lead male, emm, he's funny :) )
I think there're more

obstetrics and gynecology doctors: 2nd male lead is totally awesome and there isn't even a 2nd female lead. i think one of the reasons i love this drama so much is that there's no conniving, beezy characters.
who are you?: not strong on the romance but heart warming.
family's honor: 2nd male got somewhat annoying midway but then eventually backed down and helped the main pairing.
thank you: there was no b*tch but definitely annoying town people.
saengchori: 2nd female is crazy but funny as heck
prosecutor princess: just awesome sauce
soulmate: witty and unconventional
japanese: nobuta wo produce has such a special spot in my heart. the story is touching and thoughtful. the 3 main characters are just perfect. the 2nd female lead is also sweet.
tatta hitotsu no koi: simple, classic love story of poor guy and rich girl, but actually done right. it's really sweet.
hotaru no hikari 2 is hilarious! the 2nd male is actually a suitable contender and 2nd female is kind, albeit her appearance can be a little annoying.

"Someday" has a great second female lead. The second male lead is manipulative, but tolerable because it is Kim Min-joon. I watched it on YouTube. Same second lead pairing as in "Surgeon Bong Dal Hee."

Prosecutor Princess - sensible, savvy, helpful and NICE second leads.
The Woman who still wants to Marry - lots of realistic characters... the closest we get to evil bad guy is Lee Shi Young's sunbae who is annoying but not oh-my-gosh-i'm-gonna-smash-my-screen-in-anger-if-i see-you-again annoying :D
Secret Garden- definitely my favourite second leads!
um, yeah... evil second leads seem to be a commodity in kdramaland..

Oh my!! Oh my!! That was so utterly awesome! :) JB and Gf get their very own fanficton! I can not stop grinning right now! :P
".....avaBeans glanced over her friend’s shoulder, first shooing away the beautiful men that surrounded them so that she could see the computer screen clearly. “Oh,” she said, “Oh, that’s good. That’s too good not to do. Our fans will be the envy of all fans, everywhere on the planet. People will flock to our site on the off-chance that they will be able to become one of our fans. We shall call this: Operation Please the Fans…”
GirlFriday snapped her fingers a few times in front of her friend’s star-stricken eyes. “JB! JB! Does this mean that you want to do it? JB?”
JavaBeans walked over to her Heavenly Control Panel. She took a small hammer from a glass case on the wall, and then used it to break another glass case enshrining a single, perfect red button. With a look of utter elation, she grabbed Ji Hwan's hand and took a single finger and used it to mash down the button with a look of almost maniacal glee in her eyes. “It is done!” she said, while laughing maniacally. “We have done it, GirlFriday, we have done it!”
GirlFriday sighed, and then looked back at her computer. “Time to work on the next thread.”
JavaBeans looked utterly heartbroken, but she sat down at her computer too. “Well, at least that’ll keep them occupied for the next fifteen minutes or so.......”
Read the whole story to find out what JB did! Trust me, you want to know!! :P

Just wanted to report back that my Big Love family had a blast in SoHo together. Though most of the time, I made Henney give me piggy back rides, while shooing away the cluster of fans trying to get pictures in with my wives. And here I thought New York City would give us a bit of anonymity.
I had to let sweet YEH sign some autographs and take some pictures. Though it was the unsavories that were leaving drool stains on Hyori I was having none of. At one point, I had Henney swing me around to kick a guy in his face. Pfft, people should be well aware of my temper at this point!
We'll spend the rest of the weekend in NY and come back to CA. Henney has prepared a love nest in LA for us. =)

What type of scrapbook: Family, Pets, Travel, etc? Do you have a favorite color scheme? How much work do you want to put into it? If not much, you can create them online and have them shipped to your home. All point and click scrap booking, so easy.
I personally prefer the more difficult old fashioned method of picking everything out individually. But alas, scrapbooking is just one of many things to do, so it takes a back seat most of the time.

First time posting in OT. I woke up early, it's been raining the whole night. And going to rain more for the next two days. It's going to be really cold in SF Bay Area this weekend. Possible snow? The last time this was snow in San Francisco was 1976.
Anyway, watching the finally kiss of My Princess again and again...

We actually are twin sisters... except for these insurmountable inexplicable facts:
I'm almost ten years older than Viola.
We're both like... almost Indians, except I have a feather and she has a dot...
I have an older brother and she has a younger brother...
Other than that, we're the same person.

You should seriously consider writing a story entitled:
The Dot and the Feather
I have been mulling over the idea of a parallel storied novel where two women from vastly different backgrounds grow up in different cultures, bond over shared interests, eventually meet and here is the hard part: resolve some shared conflict together.
My daughter and I were talking about this. She mentioned Julie and Julia, as the type of set up...
Oh, yeah, the other hard part is actually coming up with 70,000 or so of those word thingies.

I finished Secret Garden last weekend and, as predicted based on recaps, I really, really love it.
Now in quandary of what to see next, nothing interests me out of the current line up of dramas ending. Perhaps I will take a look at H.I.T based on Thundie's review. Anyone here has seen it?

I'm not really sure, but I think intially because of Ha Ji Won's bad ass promo pics and the fact that the main character is a stuntwoman. The drama actually took me by surprise, and I guess I ended up liking it because of the comedy and the dialogues.

Happy Friday everyone!^^
DH and MP are both ending. *kicks cans* That totally sucks since I can't see an awesome drama to replace either of them. WHY DID THEY HAVE TO CUT WHAT'S UP?! *throws empty bottles against a wall* Yeah yeah... I'm almost turning all violent and all.
Luckily, I have BIG BANG 4th mini album to take my mind of things! The songs were intensely orgasmic!XD Yeah... I actually really just said that.=P It goes beyond eargasmic!XD XD XD Tabi hyung's voice goes straight to the core in all different songs and I'm all mushed I can't even stand up. Yep.... Loads of sexy!XD I'm not claiming or anything. It's all just pure observations and nothing more.^^;; Not like I have a shrine for him or anything *starts taking down pictures* Nope. Of course not.=P GD's all sensually intense too... However, I still think GD&TOP Vol. 1 is a far superior album. It might be because it's actually a full album and not a mini. *shakes fist at papa YG* But at least there's BigBangTV to look forward too!^^ YEY!^^ *completely denies any knowledge of missing the BIG SHOW concert*
I want to watch New Tales of Gisaeng but *shrugs* 50 eps?!O___O I can't even start Capital Scandal despite having downloaded 10 eps already. Beaners sunbaenimdeul, should I watch it?
I've taken to reading blogs instead. I'm a maniac that way. Or I just love reading waaaaaay too much. If you guys have any interesting historical fiction books about England, please share.^^ I've read all the Philippa Gregory books though so I'm all out. *sigh*
I've decided to embark on a diet involving Korean dramas. There's this ridiculously overpriced CD store in our local Safeway and it sells original box-sets of Korean drama. So I'm thinking every time I meet a short term goal, I'll buy myself a DVD that I really like.=P Has anyone ever tried this or something like it? Does it work? I hope to God it will though... cuz if not, my doctor will kill me. -___-;;
Anyway, hope everyone's having a great day. Please pray for Libya if you have time. Thanks so much!^^

I do think that GD&TOP Vol. 1 was better, too, but I really dig this new album. I especially like Cafe. I wish that it was a full album, but I think that there were rumors of another mini album later this year.
Have you read Julia Quinn? There's nothing like a Harvard grad writing stories about old England. I think that you'll like her snarky sense of humor.

Even if they don't, I'll be perfectly happy just playing the Baby Goodnight MV on loop until they come out with a new album.=P

I recommend The Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follett. It's got a really hot love story, set in the background of the struggle for power between the Church and the nobility/royalty in medieval England, and it describes how the lives of the various characters in the book are caught up in and destroyed by that struggle.
Also recommend the Outlander series, by Diana Gabaldon. Time travel romance, featuring an Englishwoman from the 1940s who finds herself in the Scotland of the 1740s. Fabulous love story, and fascinating characters.
I also like Julia Quinn, but I'd even more highly recommend Eloisa James. Very intelligent and sophisticated romance novels. Also Jo Beverley and Mary Balogh. (These four are all writers of romance novels set in Georgian/Regency England.)

If you like Philippa Gregory you should try Victoria Holt and Jean Plaidy. They were the same person, but under Jean Plaidy she wrote fictional history and Victoria Holt was more gothic romance.
I love Georgette Heyer and she wrote about the Medieval, Regency and Georgian periods.
Dorothy Dunnett was also a huge favourite when I was growing up, in particular her Francis Lymond series (he was one of my early crushes).

So My Princess was on and I was really impatient for the new episodes to come on each week. I decided to kill time by watching Queen Seon DeoK.

Yes I like Alcheon, a male character with no love story plot I'm in :P
Though I want to see Deokman & Yushin together at the end, seeing how Yushin seem doesn't have any passion about his love life kinda piss me off (he's boring, it's drama!, I want to see my male character kneeling, crying, suffering, doing crazy thing for his love interest ha, ha, ha :D ). So I like Bidam more, seeing him ALMOST crying makes my heart ached. And I always like a bit crazy character (yups Bad Guy, Coffee House, A story of Man, Secret Garden love ya all crazy men).

Happy Friday to all! I had a pretty decent one, bought some books on sale - I love books and I love sales, so double whammy of happy.
Haven't caught ep 16 of My Princess yet. Exercising some restraint, lol, trying to catch up on work. If I overdose on cute, those papers will never be graded!
Just wanted to make an observation. Both Princess Hours and My Princess featured scenes of the male lead teaching the female lead to drive. Uh, do princesses not drive? I mean, comedy gold, but that's a freaky kinda coincidence, for two dramas to do that. Just something I noticed.
Not that I'm complaining because a) funny and b) romantic. :)

Don't know if it's a princess thing, but I do know that I have a lot (and when I say a lot, I mean nearly 100) of female Korean friends, and I would say that only about 10% of the ones who are in driving age actually drive.
Also, my Korean oppa used to lecture me endlessly about the fact that women simply aren't as good at driving as men are. He believes it so strongly that he would never let me or any other girl drive when we rode together, even on trips of more than 3 hours (when it really would have been helpful to him). This, despite the fact that I have a perfect driving record and drive more safely than most of the men I know (even the Korean ones).
So I think it's just a general Korean cultural thing? Pretty much every Korean guy I know thinks that way about it, and the Korean girls go right along with them...which is always weird for me, as an American, but I just sort of nod and smile and go on driving happily, LOL! :)

February 25, 2011 at 8:10 AM
Thanks for the insight, Portia, that is definitely something to think about. I don't think it's exclusively a Korean cultural thing...Americans have jokes about 'bad women drivers' too, right? :) Thais are also not so hot with women driving, even my totally liberal, Western-educated dad will do an eyeroll if he sees a woman driving badly and blame it on her gender.
I just thought it was interesting that the driving lesson showed up in two shows about princesses. Can't recall any other show where it happened, but my knowledge of Kdrama isn't that broad, so it could just be an information gap.
Happy safe driving! :D

Yeah, men here in America joke about bad women drivers, you're right - but it's funny because even though they joke about it, they'd never refuse to let me drive on a long trip! I just was so amazed when oppa wouldn't even let me drive on a 6 hour road trip...when he had a slipped disc in his back. It was crazy.
Actually, though, I think the drama convention of having the guy teach the girl to drive is hilarious - maybe they should do it more often!
Maybe that's what made Secret Garden so funny - the fact that it's the girl who is the fantastically amazing driver, and the guy is the one screaming in the passenger's seat? Key Lime FTW! :D

Now that My Princess is over and Dream High is ending... what's next? I'm clutching onto Sign for now... which I'm still loving... but I'm wondering what else is coming out that might be worth a watch?
Crime Squad? i can't put my finger on it... but it seems vaguely similar to something I've seen before... maybe I'll like it just as much as I'm liking Sign?.. I am def a Song Il Gook fan
49 days? plot def has potential... I'm interested in how they're going to pull it off... overly dramatic? slow and plodding? maybe a bit of humor??
Royal family? eh... not a fan... but if someone watches it and recommends it.. maybe?
Midas? I'm definitely intrigued... and am a hugeee fan of both Jang Hyuk and Lee Min Jung... definitely watching the first episode of this
Thorn Birds? something about the plot smells like I'll be crying at some point in the drama... or maybe at every point the in drama... I hope I'm wrong because I really like Joo Sang Wook, and def want to watch something he's in...
The Duo? is anyone liking it so far?

YES you should def check out the duo =] 1st ep is kinda slow/boring, but by episode 2 I was addicted. Fab acting overall with realling pretty music/ scenary, and tight plot . Trust me it's worth the watch. I think its much better than the likes of Chuno. Over at darksmurf they already have english subs up to ep 6.
And I'm also loving Sign =] Began watching this like 1-2 days ago but have already seen 8 episodes...god I need to stop.

yay, the duo needs more luvin' ;)
and I'm glad the main arc is returning although I liked the other cases in sign as well. what i like about sign is that they dont finish a case in a single episode so you'll grow more attached to the characters. and on a shallow note I have to say I'm really liking Jung Gyu Woon!

Anyhow, there's possibility that less Hollywood movies will be showed in our theater caused by higher tax for its distributor . Sad but if it means more place in our theater for Asia movies including Korea, that will be great.

Kim Rae Won Kim Rae Won Kim Rae Won Kim Rae Won
Why do I love this man so much? He is not a traditional beauty, but he has presence on screen that is irresistible, and his hands, omg, I love his hands! His silences are riveting. Oh, and they like to make him run in every drama.
After devouring Attic Cat a couple of weeks ago, I watched and loved What Planet Are You From? which is the worst title of all time! I avoided it because I thought it was a silly, sci-fi story.
Loved the Bok Shil character for always saying how she feels, rather than concealing and repressing. It was nice to see Jung Ryu Won in a winning-the-man role, and she does a phenomenal job with the hiccup talking sobbing. I couldn’t figure out why Jan-di’s mom’s face was dirty all the time, though… ; ] If you want to see how far Park Shi Hoo has come in his acting, watch this one.
Started and almost finished My Love Patzzi. In this one, even when KRW is shot in the background, he remains the focus of all his scenes. I’m always checking for his reaction, and with one flicker of his eyes, he reveals his inner thoughts. It is amazing to watch him. By the way, Kim Jae Won Kim Jae Won Kim Jae Won Kim Jae Won. Where KRW was loud and tough, KJW was quiet and I want to have his babies sexy.
Does anyone know where to find a watchable online version of Love Story in Harvard?

Kim Rae Won is so fascinating to me...I don't even find him that physically attractive, and yet when he's on screen I can't look at anyone else. I think he's a good example of the phenomenon in which someone's personal magnetism is so great that it pretty much overwhelms the factor of their actual physical appearance.
I'm sure there are other actors who are the same way - I think Humphrey Bogart had the same quality when he was in all those old black-and-white films, and actually Kim Myung Min is also an example in Korean drama land...can you think of others?

I almost finished watching Gourmet. I thought it wouldn't be good, but I like it. And I am with you on Kim Rae Won. He just has something.
Also, I love that he is not a fashion whore like all the rest of the stars.
Fashion is cool and all but come on...as an example, HB in a 10k outfit going to the airport, seriously?

OK, the only piece of fan paraphernalia I brought back from Seoul was KRW trading cards. It was something that was small. and had tons of pictures of KRW on them that I had never seen before.
The first k-Movie I brought on-line was My Little Bride. yeah KRW is very nice.
And KJW was my first crush on the K world. Watch "Romance" and you really will want his children.

Happy Friday Everyone!
I haven't made any headway on catching up on My Princess. I watched episode 3 and 4, but downloading all the episodes/subs has taken forever. Hopefully, I'll be all caught up soon (before the subs for 16 are released). I guess I'll be marathoning episodes 5-13 this weekend (possibly 14 if it's released this weekend).
Now, if only the maintainer would finish with the bathroom so I can shower. If I didn't have plan in an hour, I wouldn't be so annoyed. The bathroom should have been cleaned an hour ago. But of course there was probably someone showering when the maintainer went to clean earlier.

OMG Dream High is SO GOOD!!!!
It is so testing (my practically non-Resistance) self-control.
Only two episodes a week (Stupid School which I am currently busy failing :( ) and therefore two weeks left. Although this does mean it last longer for me then most people.
^sighs^ Life would be so much easier if I actually knew any Korean :(
But with DH and My Princess finishing (for me) in the next few weeks and hopefully going to finish Secret Garden soon (Enjoying it but am not completely addicted) I don't know what to watch next :(
Should I go back and finish Playful Kiss or actually watch Personal Taste?
Hmm... anyone got any recommendations? Or upcoming dramas which look awesome?
Thanks!!!

Hey, I'm from Christchurch too! I was studying at the university when it hit. I'm definitely one of the lucky ones in that my home, friends and family are ok - plus we have power and water! I hope you are as lucky. I've spent the last two days as part of the huge volunteer army helping people dig out their homes from the mud. Some people's lives have been totally devastated by this event and I am just so thankful for what I have. As you can imagine, its all a bit depressing at the moment, with horrible news everywhere you turn, so this website is offering some awesome escapism.
Thank you JB, GF and the amazing commenters!
I know a large amount of the families of the missing are overseas people, and my thoughts go out to them as well as the New Zealand families affected by this tragedy. I can't imagine how painful it must be to be so far away at a time like this. Love to all.

I could not stop bawling while I watched the jdrama Mother. Great acting, great cinematography, awesome script and a super adorable child actor that didn't make me cringe.
Being a mother is a difficult job.
Also, I watched the first episode of Midas. It was better than I thought it would be but I'm still feeling reserved. No connection yet. Also, I'm waiting impatiently for the next episode. First time posting on this site. I'm been a lurker for a while but I thought it was about time I joined in on all the fun. I'm absolutely loving your recaps of Dream High. ^_^ I'm gonna miss the show so much when it's over. I don't know what I am going to do without my Milky couple every week.
I'm relatively new to drama land. I've been watching every k-drama I could get my hands on for about a year now. So I have a question for all of you. What are the chances that Suzy, IU, Wooyoung, ect... act again soon in another drama? (I'm not talking about together) I know juggling their pop idol duties is tough with acting. Taecyeon has been in a couple things and seems to enjoy acting. But is he a rarity among idols? I've become a huge fan of Suzy and IU through Dream High and would love to see them star in another drama.

Hey guys!
So, I'm feeling a drama withdrawal and I need some help!
So, I like serious romances. Not really into rom-coms, but I really like contract dramas, you know, you and I have a contract to be married, but we end up falling in love with each other blah blah blah. I love those types of dramas!
Also, any drama with a serious female lead, excluding any giddyness and cuteness, please.
I would appreciate any suggestions from any country (Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, China).
Thanks!

For Taiwan drama: try MARS, Fated to Love you, Devil Besides You and Autumn's Concerto.. Fated to Love you has some contract thing going on...
For Korean.. older drama like Sorry I love you, Stairway to heaven, All In, Hotelier.. are all romantic... Warning though, Sorry I Love You would be quite depression but it's one of my all time favorite... I enjoy 'How to meet a Perfect Neighbour' and 'Prosecutor Princess' and 'The woman who still want to marry' quite a bit...

Exciting day in Memphis! We're cleaning up after a tornado... ucky. My mother-in-law got hit pretty badly, the winds took the gazebo out of her back yard, blew it into the car in the front yard, and then ripped up the side of the Jeep with it. Most of the trees in her backyard no longer have tops. We're having a little bit of problems getting through her neighborhood because of all the trees and stuff in the street, but clean up has been an opportunity to have fun together, so it isn't all bad!
Can't wait for Dream High on Monday, but kind of wishing that it takes its time getting here, because I don't want it to end.

and yeah, clean-ups can be fun esp. when done with loved ones. the humor rushes in, in place of annoyance over mess. sometimes dirt fights (like food fights) ensue.

So .....
today, I had an MRI, and I'm claustrophobic and in a little pain, okay, well, crying out loud kind of pain when I have to lay flat on my back.
But I didn't so much as twitch for the 40 minutes I was there, because
I thought of Mr. Hand Towel in the shower continuously.
Sadly, I'm not kidding.

Incidentally...wouldn't it be hilarious to tell him that story? Just to see the look on his face??

the MRI was a follow-up from a car accident in December, so no big worries, sorry, probably should have explained that, and yeah, even with the pain meds, PAIN, hence the MRI ... probably something in my back is pinching where it ought not, or bulging where it should not, so I'm going to have to do accupuncture this time round. That is an awesome stress relief idea.
Lately I have been falling asleep thinking about PHY.
So now we can attribute curative powers to The Hand Towel?
(OK that is a stretch, but it is fun.)
I freaked out at my MRI years ago. Did they give you a shot of that disgusting liquid?

Yes, the terms "some discomfort" and "for a short time" should be struck from any medical personnel's language.
I just had pain meds and ear plugs, and the only other thing I was thinking *man this is embarrassing, but true* was that the magnetic clicks sounded
first, like machine gun fire coming from your foxhole buddy, and I imagined that SSH was deflecting bullets with his six pack, so that was nice
second, like German techno music (so thumping and loud at that point) so I imagined him grooving in the shower spray to that music
third, like primitive Heart of Darkness jungle drum music, so I imagined him sans loincloth undulating to that music
fourth, like the pneumatic drills used to chip up old concrete, so I imagined SSH shirtless running the drill and then showering off the sweat
and to the various clicks, whirs, bangs, thuds, and mechanical sounds, I practiced counting his abs down the right side and up the left side of his rib cage from clavical to notherly regions (yeah, I meant that misspell) while the water of the shower was pouring down those dimpled smirking lips of his ...
totally worked for me, and it was easy to go over and over it in my mind. :D
In future, I'm going to stick closely to what works.

Yes, but it might be embarrassing to answer questions with "I'm only on the four pack, wait a minute, darnit" or "we're running out of hot water so now things are stimulating growth in a new quarter, I mean ... " or "the inventory will not be complete until I've gotten to his notherly regions", et cetera.
You might not be staff long if you digress too long on the SSH shower scenes to get through!

Is it just me? Once I started watching Asian dramas, I find that US shows are lacking entertainment value. They were seriously lacking before I started watching Asain dramas(only watched 5 shows), but now I am down to watching Bones. I think it is because US shows are lacking in the romance area.

Yes, they ignore the romance and go directly to sex.
We have been hit over the head so many times with sex sex sex on US TV.
I remember having to specifically explain to my 14 year old daughter, that if you watch tv, or even commercials, it looks like people meet, have sex, next!
But it isn't that easy, since they rarely show the consequences; it isn't that romantic, since they don't show that intimacy on that level really does require folks to spend some quality time together first.

MJP--I completely agree with you about US dramas--ever since I started watching asian dramas, I have never really looked back. The only US drama I have watched in the past 3-4 years is True Blood, which is pretty great.
I think US shows depend way too much on irony and witty language--as a result the dramas and the writing is snazzy, glossy and maybe a little entertaining--yet the shows lack heart, depth and honest human emotion. In the US--writers try to avoid sentimentality and cliche like the plague--that's important but they often err on the side of writing stuff that has no passion--lovers only seem to smolder for each other--there is no sense of deep love that surpasses even physicality. At least that has been my experience.
Also, multi-year seasons destroys the story. the plot meanders and the drama wil ultimately feel episodic as they try to suspend storylines over multiple years. It must suck for an actor to play the same role for 7+ years. Korean actors are lucky as they get to try new things out every few months.
To me, asian dramas are great because the stories are short, have a defined beginning, middle and end, which helps keep the plot tight and the tension up. Also asian dramas are not afraid of DRAMA--using story archetypes that on the surface seem cliched (unrequited love, feuding families, social conflict, etc) but in reality are the basis for great fiction.

Drama trivia: watched a bit of Paradise Ranch (-desperate for a drama fix while I waited for the subbed finale of My Princess) and noticed 'Sa Ran' (/Lim Soo-hyang) is the sister of 'Lee Da Ji' (/Lee Yeon-hee). She did a good job as a younger sister and upped my regard of her as an actress.

I kinda understand where you're coming from with Sunny Happiness! I feel that I had a deeper connection with Autumn Concerto.
I mean don't get me wrong, I think the acting is well done by the main leads and even the male second lead!! Fang Yong Yong is not your typical T-drama female lead with an annoying high pitch voice, who usually over does the cuteness (Yun Jie is not bad either) but I'm not getting emotionally engaged with the drama (well except for episodes 22 &23 which is close to the end huh). The story to me is light and cute which makes it watchable.
Side note:I don't care for, nor can I stand the ex-wife!!! Ever since she gave her sorry of an excuse of a reason as to why she didn't allow Xiao Nian to meet his father = /
(I try really hard not ff scenes when she comes up, huh)

To see the Tilt, follow these basic steps:
1. Forward to an Angry/Emotional SSH Scene.
2. Open your eyes wide and do not look at any other character.
3. Concentrate on SSH's head. Do not be sidetracked by his eyelashes.
4. In seconds, you will see said head violently jerking sideways.
5. Jerking will ensue from left to right/right to left/both directions for as long as he is spewing Angry/Emotional Words. Sometimes, jerking will follow a left-left-left pattern, or right-right--right pattern. Like pressing on the replay button continuously.
6. Eyes will slant in opposite direction to above-mentioned head jerks.
7. Sighs/groans or ear-deafening AARGHs may accompany the head jerks.
8. Head tilt may culminate in an object being flung against the wall/floor.

I am the same! I really try to avoid dramas that involve stereotypical conniving second leads because I soon lose interest in the show.
I second the recommendations for Thank You and What's Up Fox. There are second leading men in both shows, but they are portrayed in a very human and honest way. The characters ended up adding to my enjoyment of the dramas rather than detracting from it.

ive been thinking a lot about this but why do most stories/dramas come from classic stories?
like the princess movies:
cinderella-oh we know how many times poor girl become rich in dramas
little mermaid: loving someone means giving up whats important to you even you have to be bubbles in the end- reference from MGIAG and the famous SG
mulan-girl cross dresses as a guy falls in love big secret out in the open in the end (CP, YAB, SKKS)
beauty and the beast: jerk guy finds love changes, girl despite said jerk-titutde finds something adoring fall in love (so many jerks in dramas that i want to hit their head once-just once)
snowhite: yeah we all have horrible inlaws- wait the witch was not her in-law?? sorry my bad..hehe..but the girl always has this jealous bitch trying to kill or sabotage her..
sleeping beauty- ummmm i dont know about this one but its like the damsel in distress things and true loves kiss
ohh..and the very famous romeo and juliet thing:
they cant be together coz families or something stands in their way.
so..welll at least the thing that they all have in common is that "and they all live happily ever after"
hahaha..what do you think?

Don't forget Pride and Prejudice:
Smart woman does NOT fall for rich snobby man.
Rich snobby man falls for smart woman, despite the smart woman's poor relatives, he woos woman, gets ignored by woman, has family member look down on woman, changes for woman, eventually changes woman's mind.
Smart woman falls for rich
snobbyman and they live happily ever after.Required fields are marked *

It's not the ending of the story that counts. It is that these stories are archetypes. Fairytales are just simplified versions of the stories people have been telling for years in so many forms. These types of story are so recognized (across countries and cultures) and often feel very true to life. As a result, audiences can easily relate to them and sympathise with the situations/characters in these stories--unrequited love, awful inlaws, family feuds, etc. These stories are like a cultural short-hand--you don't have to explain much or do a lot of character development--we get the jist of the story the moment we see a nice young girl with a mean step-mother.
Even though many dramas are based on these "fairytale" stories, I think they strike a chord in people because the emotions are ones that people face every day--the obstacles that family, friend or circumstances place in front of you, the challenge of loving someone who is your enemy, the challenge of having to live with a step-parent that you don't like. The stories just carry these basic situations to the extreme.
I think a lot about this too--personally I think I don't like much US TV because writers in the US tend to avoid these simple story archetypes that people find moving and effective. Instead, a lot of shows go for wit, irony and reject anything that seems sentimental and cliched. You get a lot of great writing but very little heart.

Life imitating art, and art imitating life: there are shades of many real life courtships in these classic tales, and these tales have stuck around for centuries in updated forms because they work. :D
Perhaps an oversimplification, but truly, these stories have thrived for generations because they are the perfect blend of a -touch-of-reality-with-ten-parts-fantasy-stirred-well-consumed-repeatedly.

Percentage of guys running around shirtless to guys hitting people with metal pipes: 1% to 99%.

Any of you watch American Idol? I'm so sad Jaycee is out. That boy sings like an angel. I cry every time I hear him sing. There's something so pure and innocent about him. So sad he didn't make it. He should never have entered AI in the first place. They've broken his dreams and his heart.
On a happier note, Amazing Race is back and my favs The Cowboys are back. Love them to pieces. Isn't that crazy? I was so upset when they lost, but I love them for their honour, integrity, cheerfulness and weird cowboy lingo and jokes. They are what I imagine Jaycee would be if he retains his pureness of spirit and innocence as an adult. Sometimes I'm so jaded by what I read and see, that it's so uplifting and refreshing to see that ppl like Jayccee and the Cowboys exist. They give me hope in this sometimes so brutal and violent world. This week has been so painful, from the NZ earthquake to the Libyan Crisis. I need more Jaycees and Cowboys to keep me hanging on. Oh, and my weekly dose of Kor and T-dramas.
I'll still have Love Buffet to replace MP withdrawal symptoms, so I'm still ok. But I'm worried they'll make Ah Yi the hero instead of Da Ye. I'm a staunch Da Ye supporter all the way. Writer, don't you dare make Ah Yi win the girl just to appease the girl fans. I'll be so pissed off.
I was looking forward to What's Up but they've canned it. Damn. It was the only drama I was looking forward to.
