My Princess surpasses 20% ratings, solidifies lead
by javabeans
In its second week, My Princess pulls away from the pack and increases its lead as the No. 1 show on Wednesday and Thursday nights, breaking the 20% mark and also the so-called MBC curse.
(It should be noted that Personal Taste actually broke the curse as well; it was the only show of the past two years to stay in double digits consistently in that slot.* A few others, like Home Sweet Home, managed an episode or two in double digits, but averaged single-digit ratings for most of their runs.)
But My Princess now definitively casts off the bad mojo, and this week’s Episodes 3 and 4 drew a 20.0% and a 20.9%, respectively. Over on SBS, Sign dropped from its first-place premiere-week numbers to 16.2% for Wednesday’s episode, then to 14.8% for Thursday’s. KBS’s President had a 7.1% for both days.
My Princess makes me laugh like a giddy fool, so I’m happy to see it doing well. And while I have seen comments likening it to Pasta (which shares the same PD), I think My Princess is much, much more watchable — there’s just so much more PLOT, first and foremost. More stuff happens, the stakes are automatically higher, and the pace is brisker.
As for Sign, to be honest I had fully intended to recap or at least introduce the drama after I’d caught the first week or two… but I have to admit that after watching it, I didn’t really know what to say about it. It looks okay, I guess, but the acting is all wacky (weirdly over the top), Eom Ji-won (whom I LOVE) is channeling some sort of shrill, dominatrix leather-queen aura, and the leads are sort of dull. Plus, the murder cases are given all this urgency and drama and intensity, but it feels a bit forced to me, and therefore it’s almost cheesy instead of cool. Sorry, not a fan.
* For the curious, here are the shows that fell under the dreaded “MBC curse,” which has killed numerous shows since early 2009. (That’s mostly a poetic way to describe it, since you could argue that really, the shows killed themselves with bad writing, bad acting, or bad directing, although a few were undeserving sacrifices to the timeslot.) They are, in chronological order:
Return of Iljimae, Cinderella Man, Triple, Hon, Heading to the Ground, Hero, The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry, Personal Taste (which survived), Living Without Incident, Running, Road No. 1, Playful Kiss, and Home Sweet Home.

I am very suprised isn't return of Iljimae a classic and I thought JB was raving about how good the women who want to marry is...or was that the women who 'still' want to marry...?

yeah but it didn't mean they they did well with the ratings. JB listed them because they were "victim" of the curse. I supposed that they were the "few were undeserving sacrifices to the timeslot"

I found it that drama (twwswtm) is mediocre. Probably only women above 30 who understand the essence of the story.
All that list above I understand why they had such bad ratings. except for My Princess, from the very first episode I already love it to pieces.

General Hospital 2. And before that was Beethoven's Virus. They both had double digit ratings. Return of Iljimae started out higher and then dropped to single digits. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet (I've only seen the first episode), but it's on my list because everyone raving about it.

As much as I appreciated Return of Iljimae, I do think it's important to go into it knowing that it's not going to be your usual sageuk k-drama fare. The pace, the amplitude, the tone, all are different.

I love SG as well but I'm liking My princess as well, maybe even slightly more. You should get of the SG train ( even though it was one of a kind and amazing) since it's ending soon and new dramas are going to show and most likely you won't be enjoying them if you compare them to SG.

MP is by no means a great drama, but it's fun and breezy.
SG is simply awful - mediocre writing/dialogue, too much inane bickering, poor development of the romance btwn the leads and pretty much hitting every tired K-drama cliche in the book.
In 3 eps, MP has done more w/ the relationship btwn the romantic leads than SG has done in 18 eps.

Wow i didn't realize how long the MBC curse has lasted!
I was just thinking today how My Princess has a low-key-ish vibe like Pasta, even though the plot is sort of grand with the discovery of a princess and reintroduction of the monarchy.
My Princess isn't an obsession yet, but I like it more with each episode. Seol and Haeyoung are just too charming. I love Haeyoung's scenes with Seol's mother. All korean guys are the same when confronted by a girl's korean mother, even if you're a chaebol diplomat. Song Seung Hun has always been sexy, but he has never been CUTE like this. makes me want to pat him on the head and pinch his cheeks. definitely refreshing.

I agree with you. Sign genre is such that either you like it or not . Rom-com appeals to a wider audience. The acting from Sign is pretty solid, but like Giant, the cast is average-looking. No cuteness, hotness, eye-candy. My Princess is lucky as the other 2 dramas are so different. If I have to compare rom-com ,for example to Secret Garden, MP is below in all levels esp. the acting.

I'm fine with the acting and eye candy is always a pleasure :) .
I am sooo surprised though - that Personal Taste was a hit. I could not get past Ep 8 or 9 because I could not get past how a grown woman (played by Son Yejin) could be so clueless! I know, sometimes we should suspend disbelief but somehow, I could not apply it to Son Yejin's character (I can't even remember the name!). I watched it mid-way until my eyes finally closed ... it was so boring for me.

I think it's probably cuz a lot of the audience prefers comedies/romance/fluff than the genre of Sign... Sign is more serious IMO and there's like a lot of information you need to take in. That's why it may seem boring to some people and just no interest if they are looking for dramas that are like My Princess and most "idol" dramas.
But really, javabeans is not "wrong" as there can never be a wrong opinion.
But I agree with you :) I'm likin Sign too. I can get a dose of romance/cuteness/laughter here but I can get some mystery/thinking/suspense-ish type of drama with Sign.

Oh I know.
When I said that they should've been exceptions, I wasn't saying that Javabeans should've titled it so. I meant that viewer ratings SHOULD'VE been better for those 2 dramas (I knew they weren't), and bemoaning the fact that sometimes quality isn't recognized.
I was also bemoaning the fact that out of all of those dramas, Personal Taste is the exception and got double digit ratings, somehow finding an audience despite being so very uneven in my opinion.

I LOVED Pasta. So much. Too much. Amazingly much.
The Cute just won me over so hard.
The plot (plot? LOL, what plot?) wasn't really all that exciting, but their interactions made me ridiculously giddy. It was just a simple & cute love story to me, it didnt need to be as dramatic or as complicated as the typical kdrama for me to enjoy it.
And plus, it was an easy-breezy watch for me. It didn't connect with me on an emotional level, but I melt watching how effing adorable the two are together. I totally dawwww every the look at each other with eyes of endearment.
dibfdbf.
I liked My Princess a lot more last week.
Im just not liking Hae Young too much right now.
Then on the other hand, I just got caught up w/ Secret Garden (marathoned through episodes 8-18) and I have to say it owns me heart and soul right now. Im sure after the weekend Ill give My Princess the love it probably deserves.

DramaFever had Sign slatted to start on Feb 3, but the date is moved up to Jan 14 (today) - I will catch Sign there!
I like rom com but Sign is something of a new k-drama genre. I have seen comments about some acting went overboard, but having seen the previous performances, I think it's the character who expressed such overboard emotions, not the actor, and I am dying to see if I was wrong.
Happy for MP's lead ratings anyways.
