Lee Na-young wraps drama, turns to film
by javabeans
Fresh off her latest drama, action-comedy Runaway Plan B, actress Lee Na-young is turning to the big screen for her next role. Though contracts haven’t been signed yet, reports indicate that she will likely be acting next in the movie Howling, starring opposite the ubiquitous Song Kang-ho (Blue Salt, Secret Reunion, Thirst).
A source with Howling’s production stated that the movie is prepping for a 2011 release and that after contacting a handful of actresses, Lee is their top contender for the role. A rep from Lee’s management company confirmed that she had received the script and is considering the project favorably.
In Howling, an animal that is bred to be a wolf-dog hybrid is used to track down killers in murder cases. Lee Na-young’s role is of a newbie cop, who works with veteran cop Song Kang-ho.
(Okay, I get that if you’re going to cast Lee Na-young and Song Kang-ho together, it makes sense that she’s the rookie and he’s the vet. But what is with the glut of movies/dramas relying on this overused dynamic, pairing female newbs with grizzled male vets? Just once, can’t we have the reverse? Just imagine the hilarity of making Song the newbie and Lee the old soul. Or, if that goes against the intended tone too much, pair an older actress with a younger hotshot. How ’bout something for us noonas out there?)

there was one... kind of... Diary of june (aka Bystanders) sort of counts in my book. It had Shin Eun Kyung starring as a veteran cop and Eric as her rookie partner. I do agree that there is a need to many more though. This movie was awesome though and says a lot about bullying and recent school culture so watch it if you have the chance!

Well not always. In Diary of June, the sunbae was a lady cop, with Eric Mun as the slacker (but talented) hoobae.

you don't see that so much in the Kdrama, but the older female lead and the male newb happens quite a bit in japan-for example, shinohara ryoko's drama's (unfair, haken no hinkaku, etc.)often take advantage of that dynamic, granted from my limited experience, the patriarchal bias in japan doesn't seem to be quite as fierce as i see in korea, but i could be wrong.

i'm excited to see Lee Na Young and Song Kang Ho in a film together. It is rare to see Lee Na Young taking on a new project right after finishing the previous one. She's an amazing actress and I love her movies.

Not a fan of her in Runaway. I thought she was pretty stiff in her acting in that drama. She did not show much range. Over-rated. Maybe she is better in a movie, 20 episodes of not much change in expression was hard to watch.

I haven't seen Runaway, but I've watched at least 2 of her films and she acts pretty well... I was actually surprised she took a drama role because I thought she was a bigger star than that.

I have a feeling that many people didn`t appreciate her in Runaway not because of lack of her acting skills but because they didn`t like her character (and the same goes to JJH).
Hope to see some recap from javabeans for ep.11-20 of Runaway!!!!
[I really liked the Special Episode and relations between LJJ and JJH]

I agree about her character not being likable but I blame that on the writing and director of the show not necessarily her. But to me she always looked tired in Runaway. Now, I don't know if that was her or if her character was supposed to look beaten because she was a "Runaway" as well or what.

LNY received a lot of compliments from the media for her impressive acting in Plan B. Her acting in Plan B was really good, the emotional scenes were carried out very well especially the scene when she was told that her grandfather might have stolen the gold together with Mr. Yang.

Top stars in Korea do drama and films except for the very top top film actors, your VVVVIPs I guess like Song Kang Ho, Sol Kyung Gu, even Kang Dong Won has worked exclusively in films for many years. Ha Ji Won I would consider a major star has done both films and drama recently...even Song Hye Kyo may not have much box office success, that doesn't stop casting directors from casting her and she's considered A-list...
Congrats to Lee Na Young...I"m sure this role is very coveted amongst A-list actresses...Song Kang Ho is a wonderful actor

And Son ye jin, Soo Ae, bae yong-joon and other, all A-list actor who work in movie and drama. It's not a shame for great actor to work on drama. The dramas are movie qualities.

Seriously, I felt uncomfortable with them two as well. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who feels this way but I think she has a pretty face but she kind of looks like a man to me. She has more of an Adam's Apple than Rain and Daniel Henney and I couldn't stop looking at it.
I saw this one picture with Daniel Henney's head on her body and I thought it was his body with just her hair photoshopped on. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who feels that way. Sorry Lee Na Young

wow she's hardworking. and it would be funny if she was the grizzled cop and the guy was the newbie.
i couldnt really sense that much chemistry between her character in runaway and rain's character.
i hope javabeans and girlfriday write their review of the latter half of runaway! i would love to see their thoughts on it.
