KBS’s President off to a slow start
by javabeans
The battle of the presidents has begun! Only, it wasn’t much of a battle with SBS’s Blue House drama Daemul leading the pack by a wide margin, drawing a 25.7% rating against KBS’s premiere episode of President, which had a 6.3%.
The numbers are a bit of a drop-off from the finale of Runaway Plan B, which signed off last week with a 13.6%. Despite the slow start, though, it seems like President is drawing initially favorable responses, and it’s still early days for the show. With Daemul nearing its end, the real question is how well it’ll perform once the big rival is out of the way.
Over on MBC, the “Korean Desperate Housewives” drama Home Sweet Home pulled its highest rating yet, nearing but unable to quite make it into double digits with a 9.9% rating.
President tracks the progress of an assemblyman (Choi Su-jong) as he runs for president with his strong, capable wife at his side (Ha Hee-ra). Their family includes three children, the eldest of whom was adopted and is played by Personal Taste’s In-hee Bot, Wang Ji-hye. The couple also has two biological children, a son played by idol star Sungmin of Super Junior (whose character name is likewise Sung-min) and a daughter played by Park Mi-jin.
Another pop singer is featured in the cast, Trax member Jay (J?), who received strong marks for his acting performance. He plays the secret son of our presidential candidate — scandalous! — who hears the truth of his father’s identity as an adult. And… then starts to “grow closer” with Wang Ji-hye… his biological father’s adopted daughter.
(ARRRRGH, Korean Dramas, why do you do this? Must you flirt with faux-incest at every turn?? Can you just imagine the headlines? “President’s Children Marry Each Other.”) (Confession: I gripe, but to be honest I AM intrigued. All of a sudden I have a lot more interest in the narrative possibilities here… Curses! It must be something in this melodrama-lovin’ Korean blood.)
Last but not least, playing a shrewd political consultant is sexy bastard Kim Heung-soo (Invincible Lee Pyeong-gang).

JANG BOGO AND HIS SIDEKICK OHMYGOD I NEED TO WATCH THIS
And I must admit I am biased to my korean singers, and to have both Sungmin and Jay! Hooray! (Usually I'm kind of >_> @ people making the crossover but jay's been in quite a few musicals and is always applauded for his acting skills so they lucked out here.)
I thought the premiere numbers would be much higher considering the cast, but I guess people are enjoying Daemul.

if db watches, i might watch... teehee....XD
i love sungmin to death but i couldn't bring myself to watch daemul (despite the stellar cast) nor athena (siwon's there)... i'm a soft-drama girl.... bickering, griping, and plotting adults don't really pull me in...

This drama sure does sound different. It has secret sons, faux-incest. But it seems that is not a big opponent against Daemul with the ratings.
I might give it go it sounds like it might be interesting.

It's so sad most people know Wang Ji Hye from her turn as the In Hee bot, since she was luminous in her soul-searing performance in Friends, Our Legend.
I'm sure she (and I) would prefer to erase PT from her resume. But I'm so intrigued by this drama now. Eeeps, I just wish her hair weren't so helmut-like. I loved her look in FOL, gorgeous and down-to-earth.

loool agree with u abt the hair....but not abt her in hee bot days! she was soo completely into the role...a good villain make it super easy to hate him/her! and she did it fantastically well all the while looking HAWT might I add! dare i say i remember her more than SYJ from the serial? :P

I agree, I didn't know he was a singer, but his screen presence was NOT awkward. and he sorta looks like Choi su jong - I guess it works out since they're supposed to be father & son.
I think this drama is aiming for a different appeal (vs. daemul). Daemul, from episode 3(?), played with the idea of romance between go hyun jung and kwon sang woo, which was a reason why i stopped watching the show...but I think this drama will focus more on the internal family tension and struggles, which I'm more interested in.
does anyone (who's seen the first ep) think Choi Su Jong is still using that typical saguek tone? It feels like that loud bellow he often used as a king in the former historical dramas is still being employed in this contemporary series too.

JAY JAY JAY JAY JAY JAY JAY JAY JAY JAY JAY JAY.
Excuse my fangirl moment, but I love him to pieces.
JAY.
..ahem.
Actually, Jay's a pretty decent actor. He had a small part in Romance Zero, and he was adorably hilarious as the rival dating agency agent.
I'm not gonna lie, I wasn't interested in President until I heard Jay was going to be in it. And the fact that his role is so large and interesting makes it even better. (Birth secrets AND faux-cest? Oh yes please!!) I'm totally going to be watching it now. :D

Hi, Kender! I'm soooo... 100% agree with u. JAY is totally HOWT! I mean I watched his (small) role on romance zero and he did a great job! And while I searched on youtube, I found out more of his works and I love it all (I mean I love him more...heheee)
Did u watch SM TOWN 2010 on the part of trax performed 'paradox' and 'oh my goddess' ? or did u watch trax old mv (from the time there're still the four of them)? go look for trax mv 'over the rainbow' and 'tears', guarantee u'll fall and fall for him more!!
PS: I can't find a recent fansite of him on soompi or asian fanatics. How about we're making one, for JAY???

LOL! Love how javabeans "whispered" her confession of having her interest piqued with the faux incest storyline. Seriously, what is it about the "melodrama-lovin' Korean blood" that never tires of the faux incest angle? There was a great post about that at thundie's prattle, but one of the PhD students who wanted to tie in Korean dramas with her thesis should explore this!
Off Topic: There was an Open Thread back in 2009 where instructions on how to write in "bold" or italics, or how to cross out a word, or to "whisper",etc. were posted. Does anyone remember which Open Thread that was?

I must say, I already like it a lot more than Athena. I have great respect for the Choi Sujong and Ha Heera couple as actors so I'm glad to see them in a series together. And I was pleasantly surprised by Jay's acting; he's actually quite good. My mother asked how an "idol" could act so well on his first try (Jay's not technically an idol but seems anyone associated with SM is deemed so), so I had to explain how he does quite a number of musicals and such. Anyway, so far an intriguing series.

I haven't seen it pointed out but this show eally looks like an adaptation of japanese manga Eagle:
Guy wanting to become president... check
Hidden son covering his campaign as a journalist... check
Mother of this hidden son dying because of a gas leak... check
Very rich in-laws... check
Adoptive daughter having feelings for her "brother"... check
Her's a link:
http://www.animefringe.com/magazine/01.01/feature/3/index.php3
I have only read the first 3 or 4 volumes of Eagle but it was awesome, especially political schemes.
For the first time, I'm actually glad I didn't finish the manga, I'll be able to enjoy the drama without being spoiled. =)

Wups Jay in this? I love JAY voice, can it be a reason for me watching this? I never see him acting :D
And political theme always becoming thing that alert me when I pick series to watch. Yeah I put political theme dramas at second row after the others. but i'll watch them if it is good.
Who say faux-incest is related to melodrama-lovin’ Korean blood? I am not Korean, but it is the only thing that makes me intrigued about this drama. Forget the political theme, if this Show can give me faux-incest issue, I am going to watch this. LOL
