Early 2011 enlistment for Kim Hye-sung
by javabeans
While it’s commonplace for celebrities to delay their mandatory military service as long as possible, young actor Kim Hye-sung (Boy Meets Boy, Unstoppable High Kick), currently 22, is going against the grain and plans to enlist early next year. (Men are sometimes granted deferrals after receiving their first notice to serve, but must enlist by the end of the year in which they turn 28, which is 29 by the Korean system.)
Several media outlets are reporting that Kim will enter service in February, but a few others take a more tentative line, stating that the date is not confirmed. His management company, Namoo Actors, responded to initial reports by saying that Kim plans to enlist early next year and is indeed considering doing so in February, but that the date may change once he receives his official draft notice. He will be assigned to active duty.
Kim Hye-sung made the leap from citizen to celebrity first as an uljjang, and then as an actor. He debuted in the 2005 movie Jenny, Juno in which he gets his girlfriend pregnant while they’re both still in middle school. He also starred in the much-buzzed-about short film Boy Meets Boy, which portrayed the sweet, adolescent budding attraction between two young gay students. He also had a part in the recent war film Into the Fire.
But still, Kim’s biggest claim to fame is probably his role as the nerdy older brother to Jung Il-woo in the hit family sitcom Unstoppable High Kick. That show, which aired in 2006, served as a springboard for several of today’s rising stars: in addition to Jung, the show also introduced us to a boyish Kim Bum (with whom Kim Hye-sung’s character had a hilarious and adorable bromance that was often written directly into the plotlines), as well as Sungkyunkwan Scandal’s Park Min-young, who was Kim Hye-sung’s pretty bimbo of a girlfriend. (A particular highlight: Her rivalry with Kim Bum for Kim Hye-sung’s affections.)
Although it’s more common for budding stars to delay their army service as much as possible, it looks like Kim would rather get it over with. Which is a good thing, if you consider that when his colleagues start heading off to fulfill their two years of service (such as Lee Min-ho, Jung Il-woo, Jang Geun-seok, Kim Bum, and Baek Sung-hyun), he’ll still be around.

i actually wondered what happened to him...he seems to be a good actor but i wonder why he hasn't garnered a high-profile role since his breakout year in 2007?

Is that why he enlist early?
Perhaps it is like Jang Hyuk case? Cause I don't know his work before his military service enlistment. After his military service was done, here come this mighty Jang Hyuk...
Oh maybe he want to change his image through his military service, from pretty boy to manly guy with choco abs and tan skin, ha, ha
Sorry my imagination went over board.. :)

To my knowledge Jang Hyuk was already popular before military. Isn't that part of the reason he tried to dodge military? He had a lot of projects under his belt already before doing army.

i agree with 1.1.2, he was really popular before he served his military duty, he became famous when he starred in Windstruck with jun jihyun. ^^ and that's the reason why he tried to dodge his draft in military. :)

i think hyesung will become manlier after he finished serving his duties. ^^ pretty sure he'll receive lots of movie/TV offers after he finished his service.

So many kdrama (and other) stars are in the army... sometimes it seems that the entire army must be composed of famous guys. ;-)
Might be an interesting drama, come to that - a company of famous actors and singers try to defend the nation!

Baek Sung Hyun - he played the younger version of Kwon Sang Woo in Stairway to Heaven, he's also the brother of Kim Ah Joong in That Fool. He's also in Running, a 4 episodes mini-drama about marathon runners (Park Min Young played his love interest).

kim hye sung is one of the few young actors that i have my eye on...i think that he's a really good actor especially considering that he's an ulzzang and just shot to fame because of his looks...
his enlistment is probably good for him,...so that he may shed off his pretty boy image...perhaps he wants to be manlier becoz he wants to do projects that are more mature..

I don't want him on active duty. Sniff. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if his army experience didn't add to his acting caliber. He's already very impressive, seemingly very empathetic, so all the challenges he must endure in the army just might make him even that much more emotionally and psychologically rich.

I know! I can't possible picture him in the army, but then again, 22 isn't a really "young" age to enter the army for the average korean male.
I still find it amazing that he's going this early considering that he's a star. Usually they want to raise their celebrity status since once you lose your footing, it can be very dificult to get back into the celeb world. Entertainers, especially, have a hard time adjusting back (ie Kim Jong-min). Anyways, hope Kim Hye-sung stays healthy and best of luck to him (I adored him in High Kick).

Don't worry his maturity is waiting for him there at the barracks .
One does not have to have the looks of the military to go to MS . Military will make sure he is on regulation haircut and clothes . He will definitely belong there ...some even get to like the training .
MS is Skorea's male rite of passage to adulthood and jobs are waiting when they get back to civilian life.
MS will be shortened by a few months several years from now . But the new law can always be repealed according to security situation .

Thats actually a smart move. The earlier you go, the more time you have to build on your career later, plus considering you're also still young. Getting back into show biz with the same height of popularity is harder on older celebs when the majority of (loud, active) fans are young.

yep, serve early and get it out of the way. the longer you drag it, the more you'll dread enlisting.

Oh my goodness, HE'S PRETTY.
This is really smart though because as you said Lee Min-ho, Jung Il-woo, Jang Geun-seok, Kim Bum, and Baek Sung-hyun) are all probably going to leave around the same time. I dread those years! :'(
JSK should leave after "Pet" movie, just because I want him to get it (his army service) out of the way.

i'm wondering how the goings-on in the border is going to affect those serving in the military currently? and also, if in the future there is heightened err activities (?), would it be likely those who already served be called again?

Yes,those with training will be called back -because they already know what to do .That is what MS is all about preparedness for the event of attack .

i think it's better to enlist at this stage so when he did 2 yrs just like the some actors like seo do young, kwon sang woo after service their career soared!
speaking of military, my prayers go to the families of the 2 soldiers who got killed a day ago from the NK artillery shells to the south....i also hope & pray our Korean actors are safe in this horrible incident, not only the actors but the other military men & civilians as well!

Ok.. I'm trying to do the math here. If Korean men need to enlist by the end of the year they turned 28 (29)..
then shouldn't Lim Ju Hwan supposed to enlist by the end of this year? He is born 1982. Did he finished his military service already? Are there any news that say when he is going to the enlist?

When did he start thinking of enlisting for his MS ? With the NK -SK conflict it is now real action any time as opposed to drill or practice .Do you think he might change his mind ?
If his intention as pointed out here is to have a free makeover courtesy of the military that is some patriotic slant there LOL.
But his strategy is good he will be around when the pretty boys are in Military barracks . Good timing ,too.
Well, goodluck .Hope everything turns out according to plan.
