Awesome podcast! This is my favourite one yet. I was laughing so hard at JB's SSH/hand towel/limp rag joke.

Totally agree about Lee Jung-jin. I saw him for the first time in 9E2O - he was lovely there. Javabeans, if you haven't seen it, it's worth watching just for him. He's a regular guy, with a job and an apartment! Plus it has the roommates thing, and it's not even forced because he and Su Ae's character are best friends. He's manly, charming, wears normal clothes, and I know he turned my brain to mush and my insides to jelly. *ahem* The show is a little draggy at the end, but I really loved how it portrayed friendship, relationships, breaking up and moving on, and the evolution of the main characters' relationship. Also has Duckie as the second lead - I love him in 9E2O much more than in PK.

About Secret Garden - I can understand what you mean about the sharpness and coldness of the dialogue, but I don't think you need to worry that it will lack heart, Girlfriday. I know it's risky to judge based on a writer's past work so I might be wrong, but City Hall started out similarly snarky and wacky, but it ended up giving me more heartfelt OMG moments that got me right there than any other drama I can recall. I really loved how CH combined cynicism and heart, sarcasm an d romance. The barbed commentary about characters' corrupt and selfish behaviour was there, the sharp humour was there, but it also had moments that made you swoon with the romance, without devolving into a sentimental sapfest. You mentioned how you like your characters to be different in the end, that you want them to go on a journey; that was one of my favourite things about CH. The way the two leads grew and changed and made each other better and stronger people by the end of the drama, without losing their personalities and becoming someone totally different. And I can see Joo Won and Ra Im are going to grow, just by being in each other's headspace - literally, lol!

Whoo, didn't mean to go on a huge tangent about City Hall! Also, in response to Javabeans' fear it will go into heavy melo territory... the only drama I've seen from this team is CH, and while I agree the tone became much heavier in the later episodes, it really really worked for me. I think it might just depend on personal preference, and where they decide to take the story of SG (and where the conflict originates from).

Thanks for the podcast! Love you guys!

yay for FT Island! had to get that out of the way.

winter sonata was my first drama that got me into kdramaland and i admit that i loved it. it's funny how i've developed in my taste for dramas over the years. like, if i saw a drama like winter sonata now, i would skip it in a heartbeat, but then, it was new and unfamiliar, and so so pretty lol. now i totally go for the rom-coms, but it's one of those things you just can't forget...because it was your first.

my cousin read a book on infidelity for her marriage and relationships class and she told me there was this whole theory for why middle aged japanese women LOVE winter sonata. the author travels around the world and observes marriages in other cultures. while in japan, winter sonata was on so she checked it out. my memory's a little hazy, but basically, she says that most japanese women, if they cheat on their partners, they usually go back to an old boyfriend, maybe from high school or a first love. this is because, when they marry, they marry partners that can provide for them financially (or maybe partners of the same class), but they don't provide for them emotionally. so in winter sonata, choi ji woo's character is supposed to marry her high school friend but her first love comes back and she chooses him instead--choosing love. this is what so many japanese women wish they could do, it's like the story of their life (w/out the amnesia, undisclosed sibling relationships, evil mothers, terminal illness, & drama that goes along with it lol). that plus there's pretty people. SUPER interesting though!

i just also have to say that i love sungkyunkwan scandal as well...but i think if they had 5 more eps. to work with, the ending could have been epic. and as for who are you, i've never seen such a heartwarming drama so thanks for recommending it to me DB! really enjoyed this podcast :)

thanks and
enjoying the podcasts...

I would have to say Winter Sonata is my first kdrama love and I'll always held the drama and its actors close to my heart ...I am a huge Bae Yong Joon fan and I don't consider myself as an ajumma but I could understand the perspective of non fans.... it was a case of love at first sight as i've never seen any drama with beautiful winter scenery before and a story so melancholy and addictive....everything is magical the first time and 8 years later I am still a kdrama addict....

lol at your take on SSH....the only time I'm warming up to him is when he's in the movie "he's so cool"....so keeping my fingers cross with SSH in his first rom com

I love your podcasts! Thank you! It is the perfect thing to listen to when doing a facial. I know that sounds weird but that's what I do....sorry.

In any case I just have a small bone to pick with one of the things you guys said. While I agree that this chaebol overload in drama is becoming very superficial, i think that my girlfriend is a gumiho did a good job of integrating it into Dae-woong's character and his subsequent development. It was because he was a chaebol who didn't know how to do for anyone else that made his growth at the end and his pledge for the ultimate sacrifice all the more compelling. I think this is a rare case where it wasn't about taking a girl to a restaurant with a beautiful view, or worse renting out the whole place, or having a necessary make-over/cinderella scene. It was about becoming a better person for the person you love.

I first saw Philip Lee in One Man's Story and all he seemed to do was lay down on the couch in the background for most of the drama, except when he was required to speak a few lines of english. In other words he wasnt much use, so why put him more out front in Secret Garden?
A great lead couple, a highly engaging and entertaining ride, accept for the little bit of fluff that is PL floating around in the foreground. They should send him back to where he belongs (as a silent background prop).
Why taint such a wonderful drama?

I'm soooo sleepy, I'm in the graveyard shift, so thank you for your podcast, lifesaver, kept me awake but now that I'm done listening I'm back to being sleepy.
Your comments on K-pop is so spot on for me. Maybe it is the age thing, if I was in my teens, I could really listen to all the current K-pop acts, but now I pick and choose and what I choose are mostly the Indie stuff.

So cute and I just have to share, my 10 month old niece totally digs 2PM and Shinee. I was randomly clicking through the cable channels and I stopped at arirang, 2PM was on and I was mesmerized by their dance routine. Then I noticed that my niece who was beside me was totally concentrating on the TV and wiggling her cute behind in time with the music. I started laughing and just to annoy her (because I'm a bad aunt and I love her expression when she's annoyed) I would cover her view of the screen and she would go right and left, up and down, my mother finally told me to desist, she's getting tired of holding the little K-pop fiend whaaa ha ha ha. It was totally entertaining, good thing the next performer was Shinee, this provided me with 10 minutes of pure entertainment.

Thank you JB and GF for another wonderful podcast! Like everyone else, one of the highlights for me was when JB was fangirling over Lee Jung Jin. Just one question though, what's the English translated name of the drama that GF said was one of her favourites when she was younger and that JB still hasn't watched? GF's endorsement has piqued my interest=) Thanks!

All that talk about Sam Soon has got me watching it again. Really curious about your thoughts on it. Perhaps you can do a "non-recap" sum up review (character analysis, favorite scenes, writing/acting critique). It can be #53 on your list. =)

Great podcast, ladies! I definitely feel like we're cohorts since I may be among the few that remember the old school kdramas!! lol. Jealousy was one of my favorites and I have fond memories (and many nights of sleep deprivation) watching Star in My Heart and Propose too (all on VHS, rented at the korean grocery store!). There was also a drama with "thunder" in the title, but I can't remember the exact title. I look forward to reading your old-school kdrama recaps when you get to #51 ^_^ Thanks for all the work you put into this site! You really help me choose wisely in the dramas to watch!! I'm thinking of giving Runaway another chance and starting at ep 8 :P

Lol....I felt the same way about Freaky Friday. The switch wasn't that believable. They were over-acting what they thought a person of that age would do

This podcast had me LOL-ing in the middle of the night that I woke my mom. Lol sorry mom. It's almost 2am here

Anyway, since you girls commented on Jang Hyuk, I just want to add that I'm really really thankful Hyun Bin got to play the part of Joo Won instead of the formerly selected lead actor.

I just can't see anyone else playing that part now. Jang Hyuk is not bad at acting though I can't really picture him trough the whole body swapping 'coz maybe he looks too masculine? and couldn't probably pull it off as good as Hyun Bin. Hyun Bin's smiles are so pretty! XD

Ha Ji Won and Hyun Bin pairing all the way!

I listened to your 4th Podcast last night and I definitely agree that you should do the #50 or #51 on your list. Recapping Old School K-dramas. I've been watching K-dramas ever since I started watching them in 2002, the time when the reruns on cable are dramas from the mid-late 90s and early 2000's so I'm quite aware of some of the dramas that you were mentioning (I'm not Korean but I enjoyed watching them ^ ^). I think I started a thread before in Soompi about it but it went dead since only a few people were aware about the good old school ones. In fact I've re-watched recently Star in my Heart that I enjoyed except thinking how the lines were so cheesy back in the old days and the fashion back then lol! anyway It'll be nice if you will proceed with that idea.
