Playful Kiss makes a dismal premiere (ouch!)
by javabeans
OUCHHHHH. Even for those who don’t put much stock in drama ratings, this has to hurt: Playful Kiss premiered today with a painfully low rating, 3.5%. That’s even lower than the flop it replaced, Road No. 1, which ended on an already low 5.3%.
Unsurprisingly, competitor KBS Baker King Kim Tak-gu held a distant lead with 44%. SBS’s My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho stayed in second place with an 11.9%.
As in any discussion of ratings, please note that I make no judgments on quality of content. I’m still eager to dive in and watch the drama, and my anticipation of its story and appeal remain undiminished. It’s just that, 3.5%, well… that’s harsh, man. I wonder if rerun numbers on the weekend will be appreciably better.
To be honest, I was expecting Kiss to premiere in third place, but I thought it would be a lot closer than that. Perhaps idol power is not what it once was — or maybe it never had quite the pull that the media hyped it to have, with similarly low numbers for the anticipated Sungkyunkwan Scandal (6.3%) on Monday.
(I know you’re probably eager to talk about the episode, so can I just ask that you keep the BIG spoilers out of it? I’m looking forward to watching the premiere and would love to let plot surprises have their intended effect.)

It is just bad timing, seriously. People watch the 1st episode and if it doesn't please their tastebuds, they quit watching it. I think everyone should give it a try and watch until ep 5 to really know how it goes. Road No. 1 is a great drama.....

Wow, total LOL @ some of the comments here.
I actually enjoyed the first episode. Thought it would be draggy, but actually moved along quite quickly, which I liked. KHJ wasn't that horridly bad either. And I just adore the lead actress and her two friends, especially the plump one. Actually, I just adore all the characters!
I admit, the lead actress really did remind me of YEH, but I didn't mind that. I loved Goong, so it was a pleasure to see the cute bears again in the ending.
So, I'm pretty much hooked, and this drama is a total hit for me. I could care less about ratings. I mean, I'm watching it for myself, not for anyone else or anything else. :)
Also, I think sometimes people forget about KHJ's character's personality in this drama (cold, distant, you know the typical "hot" genius type of guy), and always refer back to the time where he acted in BOF. Guys, it's time to move on from that.

the reason why this isn't happening is because Ariel and Joe were such a good couple and great actors. you're taking a newbie and comparing her with Ariel is almost like apple and oranges - you can't!

There is an article on a Korean site which states:
"CINE 21 who is in charge of online downloads also told that "number of downloads is more than the total average of IRIS back then"
Someone over at soompi translated the article so I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it is translated by a real person and not a website translator.
I mean, if viewers are downloading this series more than the average of IRIS (big hit, monster ratings) then there's plenty of hope yet.

Unfortunately, downloads don't sell advertisement spots on TV, and no advertisement spots sold=show gets cancelled, just like they did with Tamra Island

The online metrics helps the company evaluate its prospects for an international market (see Goong S.) Regardless of its ratings draw, Playful Kiss will have a 2nd life in the Hallyu market.
Personally I think the production company should have sold PK to SBS as a non-live shoot product. Concede that the ratings potential is inherently limited. Even if Baker King was drawing 20-ish, it's rare to see two youth dramas to score 10+ at the same time. Housewive audience may be more fickle and switch between shows. Once the kids decide on a show, that will be the house choice and the other will be strictly online show.

Considering that PK is a remake of both a Taiwanese drama and Japanese manga, I would've thought the prospects for an international market would be severely limited, but that doesn't seem to be the case at all.
Here's another quote from the article:
"For now, the number of visitors to our homepage for Playful Kiss is facing the sharpest growth amidst all our programmes homepages. And in particular, visitors from Japan, China, Malaysia, South America etc takes the steepest rise".
So even though domestic ratings aren't very impressive, the sheer number of downloads and website hits show there is a lot of international interest in the drama. Question is though, how will they export this, whether it be broadcast rights or DVD boxsets, when everyone has already downloaded it?

i remember the taiwan version and at first i hated the girl she acted and looked rather retarded. I mean yeah she is not intelligent but somehow the actress at first portrayed her that way, later on i started to like her, specially on they kiss again since she was more bubbly and had more personality.
While in the k-version, the actress gives her a sense of personality.
About this drama, hopefully it will be able to put more ratings when more eps come since i wanna watch it till the end.
Taiwanese version is good but the k-one is still beginning so a chance must be given from everyone.

The bashing in here is rather intense, isn't it? I haven't watched it yet but can it really be that bad? Is it worse than Goong S?
Plus 3.5% doesn't reflect the quality of the show unless viewership dropped drastically in the first 10 minutes. It just means very few people bothered to tune in in the first place.
If it goes down to like 1% today, then we can blame that one bad acting and everything else. I just feel bad for them .

Most of them are bitter about KHJ taking the lead male role.
Honestly, he really wasn't even that bad. And his character is supposed to be STOLID to begin with. (For those who don't know, stolid means: not easily stirred or moved mentally; unemotional; impassive--thank you dictionary.com) So, for those who are saying KHJ has "no emotion" or looks bored, well hurray. He's doing his character fine then.
Sorry for defending KHJ so much. I, too, was once a hater and was distressed when I found out KHJ would be taking the lead, but after I watched the first two episodes, I changed my mind and decided to give him a chance.
Anyways, if you can, try watching it for the other characters then. They are quite lovable, especially the lead actress that plays Ha Ni.

i think jung so min is beautiful, honestly. i think that if i could look like anyone in the korean industry, it would be her or kim so eun. she is so adorable, and natural. she doesn't have double eyelids or anything like that. the more i look at her the more beautiful she becomes. but that's in my opinion.
beauty is in the eye of the beholder :)!

It's because they picked Kim Hyun Joong and everyone knows his acting sucks...lol.
I wouldn't make any judgments yet though, because sometimes the rating suck in the beginning and then grow.
I don't think this has gotten much publicity in Korea either.

Crazykaiyi, Playful Kiss has only released 2 episodes so far. No one can really tell you if it's worth watching. I mean, seriously--it's just the beginning. Why not try out the first episode for yourself and see if you'll stick with it.

But I will still give this drama a chance.

Hooray to you for being the Positive one amongst a sea of Negativity towards PK.
I am probably one of the few who learned to like KHJ portrayal of the 2nd lead character in BOF. I gave it a 2nd try and learned to appreciate how the characters portrayed their roles.
I have seen the ISWAK and Again and initially was irrirtated by Ariel's over the top stupid acting but later realised that it's the character she's portraying. Also Joe Cheng was also stolid, as you said and I thought that was bland acting. But after a few more episodes, I got into the groove and can't wait to see the next one.
Let's give PK a chance and not bash the actors. To those who dislike... no one's forcing you to watch.
PK... FIGHTING!

Ah, I am a huge fan of ISWAK/ISWAK2, and was initially afraid that Playful Kiss would ruin it, especially since I was against KHJ at that time. (But, hoho, I am totally hooked on this drama now.)
I also found Ariel's acting quite annoying, to the point where I was about to just give up on the whole thing. But, luckily, I didn't, and now I've come to ...somewhat "appreciate" her character.
Haha, to be honest (and shallow), I just adored Joe Cheng because he was just too handsome (and cute).
But, yeah, there were some parts in ISWAK that I cringed at (whether it was due to bad acting or just extreme corniness). But look at me now--I'm an avid fan. (I heard there will be ISWAK 3, and I can't wait!)
Sooooo yeah, there ends my rambling~
Nice to see another positive soul here. Hehe.
PK FIGHTING~~~

I just watched epi 1 and epi 2, and i must say, epi 2 was much much much much better than epi 1.
I think epi 1 was weak because of the overly prolonged imagination sequences, but once they dropped that in epi 2, the pace tightened considerably and it was entertaining.
KHJ was actually pretty good in epi 2, until i actually kinda forgot he was KHJ. To get me immersed in the role... KHJ you good. haha.
I agree with many of the comments here, i think the dismal ratings of epi 1 was a case of bad-time-bad-place and undeniably, bad pacing of script.
I guess, maybe start watching from epi 2.
All the best to the show! It was entertaining, and hope the ratings get better ^^

Pfft, don't even start with the whole "face" thing. Even Micky Yoochun, who is starring in SungKyunKwan Scandal, couldn't reap 10%.
Hype doesn't help much. Whether it be Playful Kiss or SKK Scandal.
Both are good dramas so far though, at least in my opinion.

Hmmmm.....this is indeed dismal for a well advertised drama. But when i saw the trailer, it actually doesn't make you curious to watch it, its rather bland, There's nothing there to make you say hmm..this looks like fun or something. I don't know maybe I'm bias or just me but, It didn't caught my attention even watching the 1st 2 episode as say compared to Sungkyunkwan Scandal. Both of these stories were not new, they have been used and reused a dozen times I can remember. On top of that, aside from a manga-based story PK has a Japanese and Taiwanese version to boot too. You can't really avoid comparing and this can be a double edge sword, especially if say the earlier version were successful. You have to make it fresh, add a new flavour for the audience to watch it again. Same with Sungkyungkwan, Its not new, a cross-dresser girl on school surrounded by gorgeous guys. But they added something to the plot and characters that make you respond and be curious. Adn from the 2 episode, you can say, I like to know what happen next. That is the Huge difference between the 2. Well, see what happens but for now I say, I can't wait to watch Sungkyungkwan Scandal and save PK for later, if its even worth to watch it. I would just have to content myself reading The Goddesses JB and Girlfriday recap on PK drama. I'm pretty sure they will have such fun anatomizing this one - meaning I'll have fun reading them too.

the first episode wasn't bad at all, i can actually see it progresses to be a lovely drama. the lead actors are pretty decent imo, and the set !!! i love it !!! it's goong's producer after all ^^
having said that, i'm not into this kind of teenage rom-com anymore,so... yea, i'll stick with SKK scandal

Just finished episode one. It was pretty long and draggy overall with the imagination sequences, and I really think they should retire those bears.
But at least KHJ wasn't as bad as I expected once his lines came in about a good way through the episode. I think he looks a bit out of it when he doesn't have lines, but when he does get to speak, I thought he was even a bit decent at a few parts. I still think KHJ should have done some more minor roles or done a sitcom to get more practice in before take in lead roles- but then again, this is just a high school idol drama that he is starring in,.

Oh man! I was so upset watching all of those CG antics in the beginning of ep.01. I know how far along the story has to get in order for that scenario to play about, but honestly... I really didn't need all that tease way too early. Tacky not classy at all.
I love those breaks when Bye Bye Sea does an acoustic interlude to PK's theme song. So catchy and adorable.
Well, it's cute to have the Goong teddy bear ending, however I was hoping for something more original.
I feel no chemistry betwn the two lead actors. I'm sad there is no combustion.

Frankly, first you have BYJ, then you have this KHJ who tries to imitate BYJ in every sense...please enough is enough. The younger version is equally Yuck!! Am so happy that the drama flop at the beginning. That will send these two metrosexual men, rethink about their apperance and appeal to fans!! I still believe actor with good acting skills like YJT will stand firm in the industry over time, as compared to these two pretty boys!!
